God only knows why people buried this comment. It is entirely accurate. MS aren't going to say to current customers "hold on...don't buy one now...wait a couple of months and you'll get it cheaper". - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18True. I remember when the DS was out and there was a rumor a new redesign was possible. Nintendo denied this (to possibly have consumers buy the fat and ugly version) and a week later the DS Lite was announced. I also loved this comment that took a jab at the PS3 :
"We’re not forcing the consumer down a route with HD playback. We certainly don’t think it’s necessary to make any changes to the current price point."
To be honest, the legit PS3 version is still $200 more than the most expensive Xbox 360. If you end up buying the "tard box" version of the $500 PS3 you're risking your Blu-Ray player possibly being worthless after a year simply because there's no HDMI port. - gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15You know they'll drop about a day after the PS3 release.. just to rub their nose in it.
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+111) they wouldn't ever admit to doing a price drop because then people will wait for it == not buy one now
2) I happen to think they WILL drop the price $50 on the day the PS3 launches. That would make the high end system $350 vs $600, which makes the PS3 look even more obsured, thus insuring it's failure. - PRESS_00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Now is the time to buy a 360 while the epoxyless
( http://digg.com/technology/Microsoft_throws_a_wrench_at_xbox360_modchippers ) units are still in stores! - Anth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Parents buying these consoles for their kids dont know the difference.
- itsallgeektome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I don't know why the need to. The PS3 is going to be $500-$600 so it's not like price is a losing issue. Wii is competing more as a "second console" or "casual gamer console" so not much reason to lower the price on that front either.
I expect the price to stay the same for awhile. Unless they start getting squeezed on market-share. - All4not, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Exactly, it makes good business sense not to disclose your pricing strategy, otherwise people will wait until the PS3 comes out to buy the 360. I also don't like the PS3 forcing you to use a brand new technology that is not needed. Games don't need more space than a DVD can give them and many consumers don't even have a HDTV! How much could they drop the price without Blu-ray on the PS3 (no HDMI would be needed, just DVI or component)?
- awilke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Why would they drop it on PS3 launch day, they already have a $100-$300 advantage. Microsoft can use this as an advantage to keep its price higher. As the cost of the X360 parts go down, MS gets closer and closer to breaking even on it.
- DragonQuester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6it seems too soon for the 360 to drop yet...it hasnt even been a year yet...
- kefs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Why does it matter.. they have alternate pin outs...
http://pictures.xbox-scene.com/xbox360/TS-diagram/pinouts2mfxs.jpg - Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If they drop the price of the Xbox360, I might buy one.
I'm buying a Wii no matter what.
I'm never buying a PS3 at that rediculous pricepoint. I'd get a desktop for 600. They're forcing people into a standard they aren't ready with, and thus forcing them to pay a premium. This is their suicide. Good going, Sony.
As for Microsoft, well, I'm sad to see them reign supreme, but it seems to be the case now. I wish they would do a pricedrop, though. Who wouldn't buy BOTH a Wii AND a 360 if the 360 was dropped in price? It would be the perfect combo of systems. - Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Chewie67: Xbox premium package is $399, not $499.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9a.k.a.: "We've got you by the balls!"
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5it would be a great stategy if they did drop the price on the 360 some september, that would undercut the ps3 so much that it wouldnt have legs to stand on.
- Klisk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You act like people want the hd-dvd player. They don't. It's just a niche thing.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7You could buy a DS Lite, a Wii, and a 360 and still be paying only a little more than the "good" version of the PS3.
- Opteron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5If you read the endgadget article, you'd realise he isn't talking about a price drop. And that spong article is 3 years old and talks about the Xbox.
- ellingswin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Of course they don't plan on a price drop. Sony has given them this luxury. They are already losing money on each console they sell, why lose more? When Sony announced their price points, they gave Microsoft a title of cheaper machine and some breathing room.
- cdstewart, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Often people try and bury posts that contains advertising. I'm guessing this is why the parent was modded down.
Personally, I modded it down because I'm a jackass at heart. - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -28/+32People bury the comments because they're jackasses. For some reason, they see it grayed out, and get it in their head that it's a bad comment, and, like sheep, follow suit.
***** sheep. - StickyShoez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think dropping their price would be a mistake. I mean they can't drop it so much as to compete with nintendo's price, and they are currently well below that of sony's price, so why drop? I'm no financial advisor but It seems like the perfect price range to me.
- aguita, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Didn't Peter Moore indicate they were dropping the price on the monday after e3?
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And this is why even Xbox 360 fanboys should root for Sony to at least sell a passable console. If Microsoft does so well that it has very little competition, that's only good for MS, it's not good for gamers.
- zodieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'll buy a 360 when the prices comes down a bit. Here in Canada the non-core unit is $499 which is a heck of a lot more than the $399 they are in the US. Current exchange rates should but it in the $430 US range right now...
- bstock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Because the alternate pin outs are a pain in the ass.
- knyphe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2XBOX 360 = System $400 (Premium Package)
= Xbox Live Gold Subscription $50 (1 year)
= High Definition add-on $100-150?
$550-600
PS3=System $600 (Premium Package)
= PlayStation Online Service $0 (According to Sony, will be completely free, unlike XBL)
= High Definition already-on $0
$600
Therefore
$600 $600
XBOX 360 PS3
(+high def,+online) (high def and online included in price already)
so @dioscaido, there are several ways to justify the cost of the PS3 using the 360 model. When you add the features already in the PS3 next to the 360 with the added features, you justify the cost (as shown above). - dioscaido, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1don't need wifi, hd dvd, or blue ray.
- Krush, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4They will drop the price when the PS3 is released, they just don't want to openly show there hand to Sony right now.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5chewy, the xbox 360 premium is only $399, and, to bloody as well, there are rumors that ut 2007 is going to be playstation only. bloody, i'd like to see a computer that CAN run ut 2007 at those settings. 8x aa and 4-8x af is good enough for anyone, unless you have a 60" 1080p hdtv and REALLY good eyesite.
- aguita, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Trying again

..... You will simply buy dvds for whatever player your have and eventually dual compatible players will be relased ... just as with dvd recordable media - sarusa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4MS: 'Wow, thanks Sony.'
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ AKBryant54
I said a little more than the PS3. I'd rather pay $129 more than the PS3 and have all 3 consoles than risk sticking to Blu-Ray that may or may not be the accepted HD format. - aguita, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yes, they did. You can google and find more, but here are two random spots that indicate the price drop. This seems like a direct contradiction from what was indicated at e3nhttp://www.engadget.com/2006/05/12/the-engadget-and-joystiq-interview-microsofts-peter-moore/nhttp://news.spong.com/article/4739/Xbox price drop confirmed
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Like Peter Moore said, there's a difference between COST and PRICE.
They'll reduce the cost of making the machine waaay before they think of reducing the price for us consumers. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No one here is mentioning $60 games either. I hated paying $50 as it was because most of the stuff I bought ended up being crap anyway. Oblivion was worth $50 used and I'm sure Mass Effect, Gears of War, Halo 3, and possibly the new Splinter Cell will be worth it, but DAMN they're kidding themselves if I'm going to buy Perfect Dark, Amped 3, or DOA 4 for $60!
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It will probably drop in price after they make the 65nm chips instead of the 90nm chips they use now.
- mogdor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Just buy an xbox 360 at costco now, if and when there's a price drop, return it then buy at lower price.
- ScottPictures, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3MS now knows the PS3 is $599 for deluxe versus XBOX 360 $399 for deluxe version. They no longer HAVE to drop the price to remain competitive. All they have to do is focus on games.
- digiteyes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3 @UltimateFlynn... i agree... dont worry.. thats an easy thing to spot.. half of the people on digg are all fanboys.ive totally given up on this whole comment system.. cos half the time people never really stick to the topic at hand and it becomes an all raging battle of MS vs Sony vs Nintendo.. Like Bill Gates / Kaz Hirai give a ***** what u think.. either way theyll make their money.. its the consumers that are getting the ***** end of the stick (cos it makes sooo much sense for the world to have only one console maker.. so that they can charge up the ass). I can't wait until the day theres is another entrant into the game console market.. sadly the market leaders have all but pushed everyone out of this category.. oh what a sad day for gaming.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3They should probably drop the price at some point (not necessarily now, and not necessarily when other consoles come out) simply for price differentiation purposes... if 40% of the potential market will buy it at price X, 20% more will buy it at 0.8 X, and 20% more will buy it at 0.6 X, then you leave the price at X until you've sold it to most of the first group, and then drop the price down so you get the sales from the next group. (eg. the same reason why movies are available at different times in cinema, on HBO, and then on DVD)
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9In Soviet Russia, price drops YOU.
- UltimateFlynn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Each time I look at any topic that has to do with 360, PS3, or Wii, I try to find the bastard who started the PS3 vs X-Box360 flame war for ruining a great discussion
- knyphe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1PS3 games WILL NOT be above $60. Otherwise, they WILL have officially become idiots and sealed the coffin for me, and I actually really like Sony and don't have that big of a problem with the one-time only system cost. They may be half crazy with the PS3 pricing, but they are not dumb. the games WILL be either at $60 or they will wither into the worst decisions in video gaming history, ONE OR THE OTHER, NOT BOTH, MARK MY WORDS! System may be costly, but $70 GAMES WILL NOT BE PURCHASED BY MORE THAN 50 PEOPLE WORLDWIDE! It's proposterous to think that, even for Sony.
- knyphe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I feel for u, better luck next time man
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm with dioscaido here.
I don't need WiFi, my modem and router are right next to my system. HD-DVD? No format has been adopted yet so that's a HUGE gamble. If Sony leaves their online service up to the developers it's going to be one huge, painful mess. I pay $4 a month for Live and it's worth it for a unified system with an easy to manage friends list and a unified online community using a single ID.
Once HD-DVD or Blu-Ray becomes more mainstream then, and only then, will I make the decision to go one way or the other. At least I have the option of NOT getting screwed by my console if the format gets rejected or I don't have a REQUIRED HDMI port in order to even play the damned thing. - knyphe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 Maybe I didn't make this clear. It's not about whether you want blu-ray or not, it's about justifying the cost. I didn't mention the need for wifi in the 360, i actually mentioned things NOT in the 360 that make it 200 cheaper than the PS3 (The absence of the extra 40 gigs (which i forgot to mention), a high def drive, and free online capabilities). Oh and FYI, if you check around digg, you will find that Sony announced that online will be completely free and if you look at the E3, their online service is looking to be a lot like XBL, which is a standalone unified system. So maybe they are going with that standalone unified system thing after all, dioscaido. If you didn't see it, you might want to go to the E3 section on Gamespot where they have the whole PlayStation conference in which they show the XBL-like PS3 online service that you said Nobody has seen. Oh and dude, don't make this a flame war, not what I was trying to get at, just trying to clarify the point made by dmccleave.
And @Nobi-wan, Sony did this 6 years ago with the PS2 when they FORCED the DVD format on us. They took that gamble and it worked VERY well, now they are in the dillemma with the high def gamble where they believe Blu-ray is better than HD-DVD (which after studying the differences for months, Blu-Ray IS a step above HD-DVD, but that's another story). If it succeeds, the hd-dvd drive add-on will be a waste of adopters money and they will have to get a blu-ray add-on, if it doesn't, chances are it will only be used to produce PS3 games and nothing else. All I'm saying is that give credit where credit is due, MS claims to have high def gaming with a standard def player (admittedly the graphics are very good, but is it truly high def?). Sony claims to have high def gaming with a high def player (yeah, they are taking a BIG risk, but that's what companies do, and it will either work or fail. the fact that MS is playing it safe is a move that is viewed by some as smart and others as cowardly). You be the judge... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Remember when Nintentdo said the SAME EXACT thing with the gamecube a couple years ago and then like two months after the announcement they lowered the price?
