- cneil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft absorbs so much of the cost of the Xbox that it makes sense they would want a piece of the cut. I am more troubled that they don't allow hobby hackers than that they don't want third party hardware.
- jwillicu2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft has history backing them on this one. Just look at Nintendo and its seal of approval program on games and peripherals.
- bndocksnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah, this is one more thing that'll get hacked (like breaking open the packaged controller to use the "security device" inside, or something like that). either way, i am also an xbox fan, and think microsoft has a right to profit off their product in any way they see fit, for as long as they can. that being said, it'll get hacked, because hackers love to break into microsoft stuff ;)
- whammypower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I say within 2 weeks, lilgryph.
- lilgryph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How long do you think it will take before some ***** figures out how to bypass the lock and some company makes their own models?
- LaPistola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The do want third party.. they just want a piece of the pie and they want it done right. I don't blame them.. but then.. I am an Xbox fan-boy :)
- DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As a clarification for anyone who comes along wondering: This does not seem to apply to any devices that are going to connect to the XBox in a media fashion, like the PSP or iPod.
Just controllers and the ilk.
I don't think we're going to seem much interest in cracking this from the hack community except by people who own the Steel Battalion controller and are insane enough to bring it to the 360. - heavyness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if it keeps the cost of the system down, i say bring it on. most 3rd party controllers are crap anyways. i always buy name brand [ms, sony, nintendo] products anyways.
- owenkun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it cuts down on crummy third party peripherals it'd be worthwhile, but I'd wager that Microsoft's licensing will be tantamount to Verisign's secure certs: they make $$$, but the consumer doesn't get jack.
- RogerRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good, third party accessory company products suck.
- svloco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ever take a look at nintendo perhipeials/games? same deal
PS3 All they way! - ProAm500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would agree that too me, if it means cost can stay down, plus better perpherals, I'm all about it. Most 3rd party is crap, but there are some good 3rd party makers out there, as long as they dont get cut out, I dont have a problem with this.....
- Ian_Dass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0quick question about digg and its stories. i submitted this yesterday from Cnet. this morning i couldn't find it in the gaming category, however it was in my profile "stories submitted". do submissions get purged after a day or something if they don't reach front page. thanks for the answers.
- Heathen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lilgryph - wtf are they *****?
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"if it keeps the cost of the system down, i say bring it on."
wouldn't taking the time to research and create something like this, then the cost to the manufacturer to add it to whatever peripheral they have, run the cost UP? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Well, you know, they're just making sure that the software they write is completely compatible with the hardware you're using, to maintain the guaranteed user experience.
Oh wait? This isn't Apple we're talking about?
Well then,***** Micr0$hit and their whore of a CEO Mr. Bill "Devil" Gates, and his monopolistic stranglehold on their products"
Difference being that the Xbox 360 is denying 3rd parties the ability to develop for their platform without having to bend over first. Apple has no problem with 3rd parties developing for their platform.
Plus, I hardly call what Microsoft has in the gaming market a 'monopolistic stranglehold'. Especially now, the Xbox 360 is looking like flop-ware.
Also, regarding the Nintendo Seal of Approval, again the difference being the seal simply means, "We at Nintendo support this accessory and/or game and guarantee it to work properly on your Nintendo Entertainment System," I don't believe Nintendo's most recent hardware has any kind of lockout mechanism, the seal is simply their way of telling the average customer that "This passes our quality test". - zweizweifunf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this doesnt seem in the least ways such a vile thing that everyone wants it to be. so they want some quality control on the peripherals for their console, props. if it prevents whores using keyboard/mouse combos in halo, props. if it prevents me from adding my own 100gb drive so i wont have to pay exorbitant prices on xbox "certified" hdd, pro-- wait a minute f that.
but for the most part, i dont see the problem here. seems to be the usual MS hating. - Grubbi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft sucks... I know they've lost money on every Xbox they've sold, but this is made up many times over by the profits from games and accessories.
Microsoft is a monopolistic whore. - Abraxis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Makes sense, especially with the hit they take on the console at release. Haven't had a controller that felt as right as the MS one anyway, they're usually too loose and cheap. Doesn't bother me.
- jasqwerty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, you know, they're just making sure that the software they write is completely compatible with the hardware you're using, to maintain the guaranteed user experience.

umm... of COURSE he has a monopoly on his own products. genius there.
"Microsoft sucks... I know they've lost money on every Xbox they've sold, but this is made up many times over by the profits from games and accessories. Microsoft is a monopolistic whore."
god forbid a company actually profits from it's endeavours... thats like... killing children for their lunch money and selling their hair to islanders so they can make baskets...
Im no fan of MS products. But the Xbox is a kickass system. Halo is the *****. They are doing this one right and if this requirement means that the peripherals meet a quality standard then it's a good enough reason for me. If I really want to add a huge Hard Drive for cheap... trust me I will. - OBSCENE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Would you really want a hack just to use a ***** Mad Catz controller?
- quinda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bah, I hate official controllers (my hands are really small so I like to buy little kid size ones). This has kinda put me off :( Hopefully they will license a converter so you can use any form of controller or something....
- OldDrtySapper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whats wrong with a keyboard mouse combo in halo? i dont really care about the peripherals anyway its just that now i gotta hack the damn box to put in a HD but m$ will put a stop to that when they come up with a system that checks for the securty files when you try to log on to xbox live

"Apple has no problem with 3rd parties developing for their platform"
Wow, are you that blind of a Apple zealot to not see the binding hardware/software issues?
@ciphex
"genius there"
I sure am compared to you in the field of sarcasm obviously. :-D - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No I want to hack because I want to put a bigger HD in. And I own it so I should beable too if I want. If people are dumb enough to buy the crappy 3rd party stuff (not all of it is junky) then thats fine, let them.
- bloodomen13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hmmm... it'll cover peripherals. Not only controllers. Guess this is a way for MS to make sure you don't slap in your own, larger hard drive.
