- eladriano, on 10/11/2007, -7/+71Although Super Saga is good nothing beats Super Mario RPG. I own both.
- IceJelly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+21Thousand Years Door was very fun
- Sophren, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20Who cares about which is better? They're all fantastic.
- terminalpariah, on 10/11/2007, -7/+22Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is the best. But this is still amazing. Dugg.
- stoph009, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Paper Mario is nothing compared to SMRPG or Superstar Saga
- limeyfather, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6you'd think that they'd make a paper mario RPG for the DS...
- JCdaOmnislasher, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7I never had the chance myself to play the Mario and Luigi RPG series.
However, I have played around 10 times through or so, Super Mario RPG Legend of the Seven Stars. Square definately did something right when they had created this game. About a year ago, I bought a used copy of this game on Ebay for 50 bucks. Needless to say, it was 50 dollars well spent. I had to defeat Smithy again with all my characters level 30. I had to make Mario Super Jump 100 consecutive times to get the beefiest armor in the game. I had to defeat Cluex in the Mario World. I don't think there is a better Mario RPG compared to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
Was Paper Mario good? Of course it was. Just didn't compare to the 32-bit classic for me. - Shawn4168, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7As somebody who's played through all of the Mario RPG titles out there, I'd have to say that the Mario and Luigi games weren't the best ones out there, but not the worst either. They had really good story (better than the Paper Marios, but not as good as Mario RPG), but the gameplay and graphics just weren't as enjoyable for me as the console games. Still, if you can find the game for under $10, don't hesitate to pick it up.
- reddevil3, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I have played the DS version which was a lot of fun. You get to control 4 different characters (Mario/Luigi, Baby Mario/Baby Luigi).
The games are also pretty hilarious. - lardoandkeg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5amazing game. dugg.
- eightyd, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5No way! I have played both of them, and Super Mario RPG was far superior to the Superstar Saga!
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Super Paper Mario was dissapointing compared to TTYD because of it's lack of RPG-ness.
Still a great game though. - WaterSoul, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Really, nothing beats the crap out of Mario RPG : Legend of the Seven Stars (the SNES one). The music of that game is just awesome and the storyline is much deeper than the other Mario RPG games.
- Kypt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I haven't played many of the mario rpgs. I know shame on me, but haven't really owned a console since the SNEs and back then I didn't speak english so RPGs were out of the question. Currently, though, I've been playing Mario and Luigi Partners in Time for the DS and I'm loving it! Can't wait to try the others.
- nav1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You mean 16 bit, right? :P
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3No. It was THAT good.
:D - Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Played both, beat one (stuck on the last boss in Sueperstar Saga, she just wont die) but I have to say that Super Mario RPG is better by a long shot. I would love to see a second Mario rpg that plays more like Mario RPG and less like Superstar Saga/Paper Mario.
- soulpiercer7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Super Mario RPG FTW! I hope they add it to the Virtual Console soon so everybody can see just how great it really is.
this one is pretty awesome too though. I had a lot of fun with it. Partners in Time for the DS was really good as well. Mario games are still some of the best in the industry. From racing titles to RPG's to side scrollers to 3D platformers, Mario really shines. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Superstar saga was sublime brilliance.
- Kr4t05, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I just bought this game for $19 at Walmart. Granted, it's not the $10 price tag that this article claims, I still feel that it was worth every penny. Lately, I had been rather "meh" about last-gen hand-held gaming; waiting patiently until I had the money and the opportunity to buy a DS and have a decent library to choose from. But, this game gave me more than enough reason to break out the trusty old GBA SP and have at it.
Love it. - whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -1/+4I started out on Super Mario RPG and played the first two Paper Mario's. Then I played Superstar Saga and felt it just didn't quite cut it. Maybe it picked up the pace later, but the early few hours of the game was excruciatingly slow. I also felt that the controls lacked something. Once I stopped being in a situation to play my gameboy, I didn't even hook up the Gamecube gameboy player to play it on the TV. Maybe I should dig it out and give it another shot.
I'm playing Super Paper Mario right now and miss the RPG style. I find SPM to be more of a sequel to the 2d Super Mario games than to be a Mario RPG game. It's still a fun game, bit it feels a little forced into the Mario RPG/Paper Mario line. I wish that they'd continue BOTH lines rather than picking just one or the other. I also felt that the previous two Paper Marios felt more like "paper" than this one. Definitely less of a storybook feel in SPM. - LtDyson52, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2For someone who has beaten both games, the guy playing it in the video completely sucked. Kept missing dodges and not once did a combo with jumping.
- stupergenius, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Stop outbidding me OMG. ;)
- Ameth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2that was pretty cool...i suggest watching the youtube video without sound cause it gets kinda annoying after a while.
- parkermauney, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Not as good as paper mario, but still kinda fun.
I got stuck pretty close to the beginning though. - doshindude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2um...partners in time had a much superior control and battle system.
- Purin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So much of my time was spent doing those 100 Super Jumps...
...but it was well worth it. - TuffTuna, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I've played extensively both Mario RPG for SNES and Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga, and I enjoyed the SNES game much more. That game was deep. :)
- speaker219, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4My thoughts exactly.
- mrimer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Ridiculous. This game and others mentioned may all be good, but CURRENT PRICE has absolutely nothing to do with whether SS is the best Mario RPG ever made. Sheesh, where did that criterion come from?
- Shanobi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Superstar Saga is a fantastic game! The best part is the homage to Donkey Kong...
You guys and gals that never played this game, need to get it while it's cheap and before it's gone! - bIuebonics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2is it me, or is osama bin laden hiding out in that first picture? someone should inform someone... :P
- captaincoconut, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3this sounds sweet. since i don't have much money right now, instead of purchasing the game, i am planning on illegally downloading the rom and playing it on an emulator. you can't beat that price!
- shadyblade, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Definitely my favorite RPG. Man, the memories. I stayed up every night playing it the summer it came out.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2Personally, I've owned a PS2 and played a good bit on the Xbox, as well as playing PC games and arcade games. But I have to agree that Mario titles are usually quite good, whether they are Mario Kart, Mario 3d or Mario RPG. Nintendo puts extra effort into them because otherwise it might harm the brand. That's not to say it's always great (Mario Sunshine comes to mind). But it's more consistent than any other franchise.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -0/+2Are specifically referring to the "paper" style? Because they have made a mario rpg for the DS: Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. It was a sequel to Superstar Saga.
- Purin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I am going to have to agree that the original Super Mario RPG for the SNES was the best of the Mario RPG games by far.
- MeenMrMustard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I'm being dugg down because it goes against the article. No one reads anything anymore, they just see the words "No way!" and digg down my comment.
- caddyalan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I wanted to like the DS game, but then I heard that it had a bad tendency to crash.
- Jaymz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1While I can neither support or oppose that claim as I have not played all of Mario's games. Might I suggest venturing off of Nintendo's consoles, you may discover a great game.
- mwm175, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I would definitely agree that Super Mario RPG was a better game. The main thing that bugs me about all the other games (like Paper Mario and the Superstar Saga) is they are dumbed down RPGs. Don't get me wrong, they were decent games for sure, but I'm crying for a true Super Mario RPG sequel. Please Nintendo, let Squeenix do it!
- Okari, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I loved that game so much. I got all the way to the end and then found out I didn't have one of the essential badges to beat the boss. :(
- MatttK, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Are all punctuation keys missing from your keyboard or are you just an idiot?
- allisonaxe, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3i hated mario and luigi. super mario rpg, the very first one, is the best of them all.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1hm......Final fantasy....it looks just like Final Fantasy...
- Peynis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1that describes your comment quite well
- mrRB, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The part where that was a column about cheap, good, games?
- KnockoutNerd, on 10/11/2007, -8/+9the best damn mario rpg will be under 1000 wii points when it comes to the virtual console
- Shawn4168, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0No, Nintendo seems to want to keep two separate types of Mario RPG games right now. The Paper Mario series is appearing on the consoles, while the Mario & Luigi series is made for the handhelds. And for good reason. I just couldn't imagine the graphics of the Paper Mario games translating well to a handheld system anyway. They're much too detailed to translate to such a small screen.
- BobbyMC, on 07/21/2008, -2/+2There's a delicate balance between "title says it all" and unnecessary/overly cheesy descriptive additions. You failed.
