- BAKER, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think it is a good comparison, Halo is the most played game one LIVE so it makes perfect sense. Would you rather have to compared to WoW?
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Bad comparrison? I would say that comparing it to the previous top dog for online in both systems and games for consoles is pretty fair. Looks like Nintendo's online solution is a lot more accessible. Of course, I expected the Microsoft fanboys to try and undermine its success. =P
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just got Mario Kart DS today. I've been playing online with it. Good fun. And the single player is awesome too. I don't know why everyone hates Nintendo (they pretty much built the house and established the foundation of gaming today), but to each their own. I'm having fun with my DS, if you have fun with something else that's what matters... Right?
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it just me, or is Nintendo doing everything *right* all of a sudden? I mean, really... if the Revolution manages to build on all this success...
- Kam3k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2got my copy, fantastic fun. online multiplayer works amazingly well.
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't own an XBox and don't own a DS, so I'm fairly sure I can't be considered a fanboy on either side. While I do agree that comparing HALO multiplayer to Mario Kart is weird, what with the pay-to-play of HALO, I also point to the fact that the majority of people don't have WIFI, and the majority wouldn't be willing to plop down the cash to get an adapter to use regular ethernet, nor the cash for a wifi router just for the sake of Mariokart.
However, I also point out that many of the logins to play Mario Kart may have been from free hotspots. If that's the case, then you'd have to consider that not everyone gets to lug their x-box around with them and suddenly find a spot where they have time for just one quick game lol.
So... I don't know, screw it, I was originally going to take a side but the more I typed the less I had worth saying.
You know what, don't read anything above this line. - BrandonMills, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2PC FPS multiplayer has always been free.
If Xbox Live were free, it would be harder to be so critical of Xbox and Xbox 360. They're making you pay for something you should never should have paid for in the first place. End of story. - litlmutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I work for nintendo and beta tested to make sure wifi works wait till you guys play animal crossing, makes me happy to know that this title was successful and made digg!

- uberphildo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whether or not it's a good or bad comparison, I appreciate everybody *not* dogging on the poster for making the comment. That statistic comes straight out of the IGN article, basically word-for-word.
Personally I don't think it has a comparison. You could say that the 18% of Halo 2 purchasers who played online accounts for about SEVEN TIMES the total number of MarioKart DS copies sold total. This is assuming Halo 2 sold 5 million units right away, which is what I remember hearing but could be wrong.
Numbers are numbers.
MarioKart DS is tons of fun, both online and offline, and so is Halo 2. End of story. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I love Mario Kart...but this is a bad comparison. Using this source... http://news.com.com/Halo+2+clears+125+million+in+first+day/2100-1043_3-5447379.html
Halo 2 sold 2.38 million copies on the first DAY. Therefore, counting just 18% of those, that's 428,400 copies of those online in the first week. That's nearly 4 times the number of copies sold for Mario Kart. A lot of people don't have high speed internet even now and it's not something that you can carry your XBox around and find FREE high speed internet that you can plug into and play. So it's really a bad comparison. But, it's still good news for Nintendo.. - BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1btspman, Halo 2 had great single player?
Halo 2 single player was horrible. I struggled to even play through it. Boring as hell. - plex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mario Kart DS = fun
Mario Kart DS over Wi-Fi = SEX - dylanA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i bought it and love it it works better than i thought it would
- Matrixsjd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what port do I open to get the game to work? Stupid nintendo won't tell me.
- CptnObvious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mario Kart DS is awesome. If only there was a Hotspot at my school.....
- NeoTechni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By nintendo's definition, thats a failure. They wanted 100%
- Winklepr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By the way my point was meant to be its impossible to compare the console because double dash isn't online and gamecube isn't really successful online like xbox and xbox live is. Just trying to make that point. But lets keep handhelds and consoles seperate, odds are people probably own one of each. So lets see a article comparing Wipeout Pure to Mario Cart DS and then we can see how awesome nintendo is doing over Sony, as if all the articles about DS sales and Nintendogs wasn't enough to show us the great popularity of the DS of the PSP.
- Winklepr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*of the DS over the PSP.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Playing it now. Tons of fun!
- b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"you cant compare how many people played halo2 online to mariokart, they are completely different"
not comparing the game, comparing the percentange of people who went online with game X - caboose72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WoW i feel lonely
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had to tweak my router to get it working (opening ports and such). But it's great and free!
- caboose72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the last site i saw had the wifi adapter for $89!!!
- JohnH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Teitoku: "people" != "all people". Evidently lots of people are getting online with the game despite router problems.
Anyway, I guess I haven't seen all these people. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Live costs money, the DS wifi is free. People are cheap, that accounts for the difference.
And I'm not just being an Xbox fanboy. I'd totally pick this up if I weren't so cheap. - grieks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I played it on my friends DS, it's pretty amazing.
- caboose72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0as soon as my friend told me he was gonna get a DS with wifi and mario kart i was all like... nice but now im getting 1... does any1 kno where the cheapist stuff to buy it is???
- da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's fun but I wish there were some chat options or you could use the mic on the ds to chat, other then that it's great fun as are all my DS games
- Trikk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Bad comparison. Still nice to know. I'm personally waiting for Animal Crossing to take my DS online.
- robotplague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The more I play Mario Kart wifi the more I like it. Had it since launch and continue to play it regularly. Though it's incredible how good some people are at the game. I'm getting bitch slapped on a regular basis. Congrats Nintendo.
- CLIFFosakaJAPAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This story is a dupe:
http://digg.com/gaming/Mario_Kart_taking_credit_for_making_the_DS_WiFi_a_Hit - tj9991, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got my copy of Mario Kart yesterday, and I love it :D
I have a wireless router, so I play a lot of WiFi on it - teitoku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"'people' !=
all people
. "
Um...so?
"Evidently lots of people are getting online with the game despite router problems."
Lots, sure. But near 50%? Bullcrap.
"Anyway, I guess I haven't seen all these people."
At last we agree. - disruptor108, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you thought this was good check this out...
http://digg.com/gaming/Mario_Kart_goes_to_the_Arcade - LowGan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nintendo is by far my favorite, I'm glad the wifi is such a success it really is an awesome idea and so great that it's free. i have tony hawk for ds, and that's pretty fun, online isn't all what it's cracked up to be though. i think i might have to go buy Mario kart, such an awesome classic game.......and finally you can play against other people than your little sister or the computer.
- birdadderley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0plus, it is rumored that in December the DS's price will drop down to _$99_
and on dec. 5, Animal Crossing gets released. - cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The DS now has its killer-app and my thumb now has a major cramp.
- Demagogue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cant log my microsoft patented brick around to a hotspot, but w/e this is still cool
I like seeing nintendo do well and I cant wait til the revolution comes out. - dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I went online with it a couple days ago. since I don't have high speed internet I can't play it online much.(yet, I'm getting it in about 20 days or something). I only got in one race, but it was great. I've been addicted to the game, and have played it a couple of times today. Once I get my dsl, I'll be entering online races @ projectmkart.net
Animal Crossing was extremely addicting on the Gamecube, but sitting down and starting it up got to be an annoyance, but with portable, and wifi, I'm sure it'll be even funner than the first.
All in all, I think nintendo wifi will be the biggest online game market (not counting pc games.) - Winklepr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does no one take into the point that Halo 2 is a mature title and Mario Kart is a "everyone" or "e" title, that along with it being cheaper to pick up a copy, easier to get connected, and no live subscription fee - this is worse then the comparisons they often do on CNET's sunday smackdowns, which today happens to be the xbox 360 vs. the PSP after last week the 360 bearly beat out the Atari 2600 in meaninless voting. Don't get me wrong, if I'm a fanboy for anything its for XboX or Nintendo, only Sony really fries my beans and its more just due to things they do outside of the video game industry such as ATRAC3, Connect Music Store, and many things everyone here should have already read about many times. I would like to see Nintendo grab back its gaming crown and get more 3rd party games, but comparing this with halo 2 is dumb - compare it to that infected game for PSP or something, we know they dominate the handheld market - lets compare online numbers to halo 2 and mario kart double dash for gamecube if anything. Stupid article either way but still love xbox and gamecube for different reasons.
- Darthpip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Black-Box matchmaking isn't too annoying. It is at first, but the entire idea is just to play online and go. No *****' around server rooms, no waiting for somebody to press done, just select you game, wait for people to join, and GO.
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"plus, it is rumored that in December the DS's price will drop down to _$99_"
They do this, and I'll definately pick one up. I'm not much of a fan of portable gaming, as I'm usually at home when I have gaming time and able to crash in front of a console or the PC, but if it's less than $100 then it might be worth the purchase for use when the girlfriend is watching one of those damned Lifetime movie network shows. Thank you, Nintendo, for freeing me from Lifetime! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was dead set against buying a DS. I think it's a little nice machine and all, but I already own a Game Boy Advance and the only game I play on it is Game & Watch Gallery III, a collection of pre-GameBoy LCD handheld games ported to the Game Boy Color. It's not even a frickin' GB Advance game (It's great, though)
But I'm going to buy the Mario Cart DS bundle. This hype about Mario Cart WiFi came out of nowhere, but I'm a sucker and I'm hooked. Damn you Nintendo! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0to all fanboys if you don't like the publication don't comment on it. all you guys do it bitch, get a life. I think the free wi-fi is a good idea.
- oakeybloke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The reason few people played online right away after buying it is because playing the single-player storyline game takes a long time, especially if you're on the harder levels. You want to watch all of the cinematics, check out all of the detail and stuff.
On Mario Kart, you're driving all over the place and not stopping to look at the detail of a turtleshell as it zaps you from behind. It's meant to be played fast, while Halo was meant to be complex and detailed, whereas on MK you can finish the whole thing in maybe 2-3 hours top. A full run in H2 takes maybe 4-6 hours, if you're skipping everything on the easy setting and if you're playing it for the first time on a hard setting, all freakin' day.
If it were a dinky game like MK, sure, Halo would have been played WiFi nearly right out of the box, but Halo is giant, complex, and highly important in the storyline aspect. Plus, you had to play thru the entire game practically to unlock an online multiplayer level anyway. You probably weren't on the edge of your seat wondering what storyline will be used for a racing game -- they're two vastly different games. - starmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ok I've been playing MKDS online over the past few days and I have the following observations:
- black-box matchmaking gets annoying rather quickly
- not being able to add players to a friends list in the game (while you're playing) is annoying.
- people disconnecting before you finish a race is annoying
- not telling us what ports to open on our firewalls and instead having to monitor your router logs to get the game working is annoying
- no online battlemode is annoying
- people blue-shelling you and pipping you at the post is annoying!
other than that, this game rocks :) - legomaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are playing the catch up game again.
They have all the great titles, now they just need a system to do them justice, I hope the Revolution will be all that is really cracked up to be. -
