- Ismith988, on 07/17/2009, -3/+91I love getting the same game every year
/s - DarkSeamus, on 07/17/2009, -6/+78How is this overcharging? You go to the store and you agree on the price and then you pay for it. They charge you exactly what you agreed. If you think it's too expensive you shouldn't buy it.
- Machzy, on 07/17/2009, -0/+52Haha, you'd think you'd learn after the first couple years....
- Linguo, on 07/17/2009, -5/+57I actually thought the 2K series was much funner than Madden. The controls and collision were more realistic AND it was only 20-25$. I'm not sure if that pricing would have stayed the same for the next gen consoles, but it's sort of ***** they singed that deal.
- WafflesID, on 07/17/2009, -1/+46Really? You mean buying yearly upgrades for $60 isn't a ripoff?
They could just make it so that the rosters update each year so that you can keep the game for 2 or 3 years without feeling like you HAVE to upgrade or you'll be stuck playing as bret farve with the packers.
Yeah it's nice that they add features every year, and it DOES improve each year....but Daaaamn. $60 worth of improvements? It's not an entirely new game! - Joshislong, on 07/17/2009, -3/+40Madden charges $60 for roster updates every year?! Surely EA wouldn't stoop to such low levels!
/s - CaptZomborg, on 07/17/2009, -6/+361) anything that hurts EA's Madden franchise is awesome in my book.
2) it's sad that a football game has to have NFL rosters and teams in order for it to be successful. - inactive, on 07/17/2009, -5/+32ESPN NFL 2K5 is still the best football video game available on this planet. 10 years later and madden still can't get it right. Madden is just an arcade game, there is no real football strategy involved. Just hail mary over and over and the receiver catches it 50% of the time regardless of coverage. Garbage.
I have converted MANY madden players to 2K5 before the end of the first quarter. No wonder EA had to eliminate the competition with contracting. They sure as hell couldn't do it with quality or value. - dark2025, on 07/17/2009, -1/+28It improves... by... um... making the engine render everything slightly shinier each year?
- Scrappy1850, on 07/17/2009, -2/+29*realisticer
- mrmod, on 07/17/2009, -0/+19Seriously, you're responsible for yourself. Just don't buy that ***** and you won't get ripped off. Vote with your damn dollar
- slimasian, on 07/17/2009, -0/+18Agreed, I always believed the 2K series to be superior in the football arena than Madden. 2K5 was the epitome of fantastic presentation...the integrated ESPN, a scary-looking Boomer, the works. Can't wait for 2K sports to get their hands on the NFL licensing again in 2012 -- apparently it should've been this year, but, yeah, EA kind of has a lot of money to burn :-P
- GalacticRerun, on 07/17/2009, -0/+18I knew there was something fishy going on when I got charged $925,000,060 for Madden 95.
- mrn111, on 07/17/2009, -3/+20I can agree up to a point...but the simple fact is that if you are a fan of NFL football, without competition, you either have to take it or leave and that sucks. Kinda like internet access in my area, its either comcast (which I hate with a passion) or .....nothing.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+16I bought a copy of ESPN NFL 2K5 for 3 dollars at gamestop. You should do the same, you'll never touch that madden garbage ever again.
- dark2025, on 07/17/2009, -3/+18MMO game companies need to pay an arm and a leg for server costs. EA (in the case of Madden) does not.
- pontiac, on 07/17/2009, -0/+10@Fervins Consoles improve each year? Damn I need to get my X-Box 132,460.
But yeah I always thought it was dumnb that you had to pay full-price for what couldn't really be considered a sequel. Is the difference between Madden 06 and 07 worth the full price of the game? Obviously many people think so, but now with DLC being so ubiquitous it would seem like they could just sell a base NFL game and have you download new rosters every year for $15-$30 and then only upgrade when real improvements are made to graphics/phsyics. - Bozmanbeyond, on 07/17/2009, -0/+9SUCKER!
- rwbrinso, on 07/17/2009, -4/+13Ha. I buy this effing game every year and still don't get my money's worth.
- MrBenC, on 07/17/2009, -2/+11madden 95 was worth it.
- Kral, on 07/17/2009, -4/+13Heh, how'd that "DRM will decrease game prices" thing work out for you console gamers? Funny how new releases are still < $50 on the PC, and we aren't forced to pay for 'DLC' - we can mod our own games for free.
- jedinate, on 07/17/2009, -1/+10Someone needs to let this guy know that all new next gen games are $60 now, not just Madden.
- foucaultsvac, on 07/17/2009, -7/+15Does this dork know how economics work? People are charged what the market will bear. They're not getting "bilked" if people are willing to pay for it.
- Kakumeikeahi, on 07/17/2009, -10/+17Someone needs to tell this guy to look at the math behind MMO subscriptions.
- exscind, on 07/17/2009, -1/+8He was referring to Sega's start with NFL 2K.
- wc3452, on 07/17/2009, -3/+10I love how some diggers think they know more about economics than a guy with a PhD from MIT in Economics.
Here's the prof's CV:
http://www.jeff-mason.com/cv.html - punkcat, on 07/17/2009, -0/+6i think the energy crisis would be solved if we could somehow harvest all the used madden copies at Gamestop.
- jtbndy, on 07/17/2009, -6/+12Considering hes an economics professor at the University of Michigan, I would venture to guess he knows more about economics than you.
I doubt you can get a fair understanding of his argument from a 10 sentence article. - Jooze, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7You don't. Trust me.
- NJank, on 07/17/2009, -1/+7man, I thought it was a deal at $23,148,855,308,184,500.
- theaceoffire, on 07/17/2009, -4/+10*reailasetiecer
- thetayloreffect, on 07/17/2009, -5/+10I don't think it's fair to call the Madden franchise a ripoff - because I don't think they're doing anything disingenuous or deceptive.
I gladly purchase the new version of the game every August - knowing full well what I'm going to get. I actually look forward to it! They revise the game engine pretty dramatically every 3 or 4 years.
I love football and I love the NFL. I look at Madden games like a digital companion to the NFL season, and I honestly believe I have a better understanding (and therefor a greater appreciation) for the game of football because of these games. - chlsmith, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6Amen. Now, are they making more than they would have if they were still competing with other companies making NFL games? Sure. But are they overcharging? Not as long as people are buying.
- redcard, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6Most people here are missing the obvious.
Current generation games are new at $60. This wasn't an EA price point, it was to bring us more in line with what Japan and Europe are paying. If you go onto Gamestop , you'll see an ad for NCAA Football 10. (Or maybe you have to search for it.) On the PS2, it's $40. On the PS3/X360, it's $60, on the PSP , it's $40. - thinkb4utype, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5This is all about some ***** lawyer wanting to cash in on Madden. The lawyer says as much when he is quoted as saying: with CA 's triple damages law, EA will be compelled to settle. We have too many lawyers chasing big payoffs with dodgy class action lawsuits. Thing is EA will probably settle and just charge extra to cover the cost, and the lawyer will buy a house on the beach, a porche, and a trophy wife with the cash.
- zlopez, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4It sucks paying 60 bucks every year when you know your team is going to suck...
- saigumi, on 07/17/2009, -2/+6Though, 2K sports doesn't have an exclusive contract with the MLB. EA just decided that baseball wasn't a profit center and hasn't made a game for it.
- thetayloreffect, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4There is an interesting psychological aspect to Madden and its relationship to the NFL season. I notice that my interest in the game sort of wanes after the Superbowl.
On the rare occasion that I do pop in for a game during the off season - it seems like there is less traffic on XBL. - samard2002, on 07/17/2009, -5/+9Yet another to just play Grifball.
- SpruceCaboose, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5The first NFL 2K game came out in 1999. It is 2009 now, so yes, 10 years.
- C00ter, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Calm down, friend. Unless you're eight years old, you must be forgetting that the Pats were near irrelevant for the majority of the years prior to the Brady-Belichick regime. And for good measure, 18-1.
- Bozmanbeyond, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Don't feel bad I got charged 23 quadrillion dollars for eating a Wolfgang Puck's.
- wolfing, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4yeah, like they would kill their cash cow. If they didn't have an exclusive contract, I'm sure another company would have done what you suggested, and then EA would have had to do it too (just like Microsoft is offering Office online for free to compete with Google and others).
- NJank, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4he's arguing that lack of competition is driving up your prices. Kind of like how people say more competition in the cable market would bring down TV or broadband costs. It's all speculative money, with maximum "overcharging" being based on the free-market-ideal cost of service. (with max competition all prices approach costs). Can't see the article 'cause of WebSense, so I'm not sure what this guy's using as his base price.
But, you're being "overcharged" relative to the comparable competitive price that would develop.
If you could only buy Tshirts from one store, they'd be able to charge you more for the shirt than if they had competition. Sure, you agreed to buy the shirt, but you had no other competitive offers to mitigate the price paid. - saigumi, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Yes, that is true. But then you forget that back when there was options, EA and 2K had a price war and 2K released 2005 for $20 new.
- iH8Liberals, on 07/17/2009, -2/+6Let's demand that Obama make exclusivity contracts illegal!!!1
/s - rayde, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5but the point is that the NFL games from 2K which were directly competing with Madden were a fraction of that price. With EA's monopoly on the market, gamers are given no options if they wish to have the latest NFL game other than to fork over the higher price.
- yaosio, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5All PS3 and 360 games cost $60. Really, you're being scammed out of $60 buying such a horrible game.
- saigumi, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Look at how much 2k Sports's football 2005 was when it came out new... and read about the price war back when there was competition.
- glutamate, on 07/17/2009, -1/+4Why shouldn't those companies have the right to sign a 10-year deal?
I know it's not what YOU want, but then you should vote with your money and NOT buy the game. Does it HAVE to have the the novelty of real players to be a fun handegg game? If it does for you, then tough *****, you have to pay for it.
***** your communism. -
