- nklnch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Holy hell. $175 million! That's a sweet prize for developing a new genre.
Harmonix is awesome but I'm surprised they don't just hire some eager rip-off teams for much less.- Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Yeah, but will this mean that Harmonix will stop making music games, much like MTV stopped showing music videos?
- BigEv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If I know anything about Harmonix, I know they were smart enough about this deal to allow them to still develop new IPs.
- floridiot, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0Why do they "$175 million in cash", like the MTV execs are bringing in $175 million in 11 huge brief.. no longcases filled with cash..
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26It's MTV, they will ruin it.
It will first start out with you playing a Good Charlotte song, then your character's roommate will come up on stage to cuss you out becuause she's pissed you slept with her sister. Meanwhile your other gay roommate is making out with his boyfriend in the corner while the token slut girl is hooking up with 2 guys and another girl who's experimenting with her newfound bisexuality in the hot tub. They will call it "Real Guitar Hero World." In the meantime you will have completely forgotten this is supposed to be a music game but no one will really say anything because they're still making money from all the 12 year olds who are buying it.
Advertisements on Myspace coming soon. - SqueakyWheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If MTV ruins it at least we have the PC clone Frets on Fire. Check it out here
http://www.gamecaption.com/2006/09/22/guitar-hero-on-the-pc/ - twtmc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1MTV will ruin it by slowly turning the guitar into a regular console controller variation and instead of pressing buttons in sequence, you will go around beating up hookers and shooting mob bosses.
- starvingarvin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Inventing a new genre...?
They're really just capitalizing on Konami's in ability to market it's Bemani line (other than DDR) here in the states.
Sure the game may be a blast and have new ideas, but Harmonix did not invent a new genre. - jchawk2003, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2real world and laguna beach characters to be unlockable?
- ViRaZ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'm quoting Lewis Black on this one:
MTV is to music as KFC is to chicken
- Fooluaintblack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Does this mean America will finally be able to get a "Drummania" game? I have been really tired of MTV owning the rights to that and not doing anything with it for some time now. Here's hoping, and here's hoping that they don't butcher anything.
- floridiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MTV doesn't own Drummania. Bemani does, a part of Konami.
"Konami has not produced an American version of DrumMania, since MTV Drumscape holds the US patent for "drum simulation games"."
-wikipedia
I can't believe they can patent something they didn't invent..
- floridiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MTV doesn't own Drummania. Bemani does, a part of Konami.
- fakesinatra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Wow.
Bye Bye Guitar Hero. Hello Pop Hero.
It was fun while it lasted.- cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I came in to post the comment you already made..
..I rue the day that MTV ruined guitar video games.
- cakestick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I came in to post the comment you already made..
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh well, I guess we got two good games out of them. From here on out, it will consist entirely of crappy bands MTV's trying to push on us.
- Inverno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Frequency, Amplitude, Guitar Hero, and Guitar Hero 2 (pending).. that's four :p And I'm sure both series are about to take a huge dump. :(
- tool_army, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3All this news means is that instead of shredding to rock songs, we'll now be "shredding" our plastic guitars to Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and even some rap, which means they'll probably throw in some of K-Fed's uber-hip rap/jabber!
In all seriousness, maybe that means we'll get cooler songs, more songs, and even potentially have music videos playing in the background as an option? We'll see. I can't wait to see how the Guitar Hero game turns out on the Wii... - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MTV has a big connection to Microsoft, I guess we'll be seeing Guitar Hero on the Xbox 360 some time in the future.
- radixus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually they have already reported that Guitar Hero was going multi-next gen platforms, prior to this purchase.
So we'll be able to hopefully play those guitars wirelessly with the Wii and 360!

- radixus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually they have already reported that Guitar Hero was going multi-next gen platforms, prior to this purchase.
- FastZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4MTV sucks and anything they own will most likely turn to *****. Guitar Hero is a good game. I'd be amazed if it remains a good game now that MTV will own it.
- radixus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yep, I wouldn't be surprised if we see The Real World: Guitar Hero Edition
- mypenis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5All this will mean is that you're be marketed to death with "NEW MTV CONTENT" for their shows. Real World and Laguana Beach crews will show up in the audience and dance/cry/drink. You can get a tour of the character's CRIB. Your character will have to figure out how NOT to get PUNKED!
Crap. I just gave MTV some really horrible ideas. Sorry guys.- floridiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You son of a bitch mypenis.
- Blazekun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1mypenis types out messages and posts them on digg. mypenis gave MTV bad ideas. mypenis plays guitar hero.
- theamazingboo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, there went all the decent musical choices.
- mc4_a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The new versions of guitar hero will involve sitting around waiting for the endless parade of "reality" shows to end so the user can play music, which naturally will be a hip-hop track that contains no guitar.
- wozley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, that sucks.
- Beelzebub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5NOOOOOOOOOO...etc.
- floridiot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2-Darth Vader
- imnojezus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0The good news: Guitar Hero 3 is pretty much a lock, as are 4 through 10.
The bad news: it will likely include a tie-in to reality TV, somehow invole Justin Timberlaketimbalandboobieflasher, contain the words "bling-bling" somewhere in the dialogue, and be called "Guitar Heros: Pimp My Axe". - JTForce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hah!
I can just imagine it now. playing guitar hero as all your favorite MTV personalities through out the years. Kurt Schroeder, Matt Pinfield, Jesse Camp... - mrberns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You know you'd think the guys at harmonix wouldnt allow themselves to fall under control of and evil horrible terrible entity like, you'd think that these guys who have been innovating and perfecting the musical genre of games for the last several years would have a clear vision of where they want their company to go. You'd think that they would...JESUS CHRIST I CANT DO IT, THEY'RE IN BED WITH MTV, THERE IS NO SALVATION. rip Harmonix.
- quotato, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Here we go again. Gong show revisited. Cliff Burton and Jimi Hendrix are rolling in their graves. Sugar coated MTV taking the acid out of guitar jamming. Damm---I am SO SO happy that my Gibson Les Paul Custom Black Beauty Fretless Wonder Electric Guitar is not for sale on Ebay, or some rich jerk from MTV would buy it for their collection. Yet, for $175,000,000, who would not SELL OUT.... :*)
- shlemielo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you guys don't know, MTV has actually put out some pretty cool video games. Anyone remember MTV Music Generator?
- Geekkake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good point about the MTV Music Generator. That was a good series. Hopefully, MTV will just let Harmonix do their thing, and rake in the percentage.
- umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2MTV Sucks now. I loved the old school where you could actually see music videos and interesting stuff on bands.
Now all it is are a bunch of uneducated 20 somethings trying to win money or 17 year old fat ugly girls complaining about how some guy is ignoring her. Shut the ***** up already. ....wahhh...my daddy got me the Lexus SUV when I told him I wanted the BMW.....
Sorry, totally unrelated to the article, I just had to rant.- TheKingInYellow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why is mtv sucking now? they've been sucking for...umm...about the past 15 years. this guitar hero venture is yet another one of their attempts to cash in on the latest big thing (which they try to do quite often). you would think mtv would be broke after buying the rights and liscences to everything under the sun but noooooo. they're like the worlds largest roach...it won't die....EVER!
- awilke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nooooooo... any chance of a good sequal to amplitude just went out the window.
- WhiplashVIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awwwww, man.... This will be the death of everthing cool about the Guitar Hero series :(
- wildey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Guitar Hero 3 will be emo and Jessica Simpson and the sg with pushed aside for the a daisy rock
so sad. - 88iou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oh well, there's always Guitarmania.
- pogowolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To those wondering why Harmonix would do just a stupid thing.. it's not really their fault. they sold out to Activision, which (now it seems) in turn sold it to MTV.
Yeah.. RIP Guitar Hero. It was a good game. - phoofy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can someone clarify something for me?
Recently Activision bought Red Octane, who was publishing GH, so essentially buying the rights to publish the game. Now MTV is acquiring Harmonix, who ... are the actual developers? So if Harmonix continues to make GH, MTV could find other publishers for it other than Activision, right?
Or was Red Octane and Harmonix one and the same?- oddgodd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know who owns the publishing rights for guitar hero, although I suspect red octane has them locked up for a little while judging by what activision paid for them.
In any case Red Octane is just a publisher, Harmonix actually built the game.
Harmonix also develops the Karakoe Revolution games which are published by Konami. Perhaps MTV was more interested in this product line or just music games in general and doesn't care who publishes the games.
- oddgodd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know who owns the publishing rights for guitar hero, although I suspect red octane has them locked up for a little while judging by what activision paid for them.
- SliWoady, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2YES!! NOW I CAN PLAY TO AFI AND PANIC AT THE DISCO
- RazorCrusade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is as bad as EA buying the NFL license.
- DTAL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love Harmonix. They made my favorite game (Amplitude). I was hoping for a sequel but now if there is one its gonna suck. :(
- Fooluaintblack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No i didn't mean that MTV owned Drummania, i meant that MTV owns the patent to Drum Simulation Games, and that hopefully we might get a game like that soon, but as has been stated, it would be affiliated with MTV and probably bursting with ***** songs.
I wish it wasn't so expensive to play drummania, i would need to import the game, and the controller, and then i would need a modded PlayStation 2, it ends up being something like $400. - lofiboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh God, I do not look forward to seeing All-American Rejects in GH III.
- Spaz007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Again MTV trying to show that they are still relevant in music when they are everything but that.
