http://www.zeldadungeon.net/Zelda01/Items/Ladder.png - chamblin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+88At MIT, hack = clever prank, or just ingenious non-intended use.
MIT's culture has had these kind of hacks for decades and decades. Most of the time, they're somewhat more elaborate than this (i.e. a cop car on the dome), but they're always surprising and pretty amazing the things they pull off without getting caught.
If you're interested in this kind of work, check out Nightwork, which is a great book describing some of their historical hacks. MITs catalog also has (had?) quite a bit about this. - KayinNasaki, on 10/12/2007, -8/+93MIT students refer to these things as 'hacks' for whatever reason, so its approriate to use here I guess.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -34/+114i don't know, but if this counts then apparantly all construction workers are hackers.
- wyattxp, on 10/12/2007, -5/+81You mean Level 4
- Louis11, on 10/12/2007, -7/+68Hacking does not deal strictly with computers. It's modifying things to work differently, or creating something out of something else... Have a look at hackaday.com, most of these are not "Hacks" in your traditional computer sense, some have to do with building things. Hackers are not just highly computer literate people :-)
- evilelf2407, on 10/12/2007, -48/+107wtf? how is this hacking?
- jesswa, on 10/12/2007, -8/+66...just in case you can't use the navigation on the linked page...
- Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -1/+47Yes, but this one involves Zelda.
ZELDA. - lava, on 10/12/2007, -5/+43Silly ignorant fool...

/MIT student. - jesswa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38If it's in urban dictionary, it must be correct:
1. A clever or elegant technical accomplishment, especially one with a playful or prankish bent. A clever routine in a computer program, especially one which uses tools for purposes other than those for which they were intended, might be considered a hack. Students at technical universities, such as MIT, are famous for performing elaborate hacks, such as disassembling the dean's car and then reassembling it inside his house, or turning a fourteen-story building into a giant Tetris game by placing computer-controlled lighting panels in its windows.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hack - herlehy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+42Yes, it is a Hack. In the MIT sense of the word though. Hacks happen every year. There is a huge gallery somewhere that provides a good explanation. And to be considered a Hack, it has to not do damage to the campus either. There are a lot of them. The most common being the IHTFP hack.
So, learn before you blast people. Makes you look like the retard. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28@wyattxp

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me, princess!
- muffinking, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Now, see, MIT _invented_ the word hack. And it referred to things like this until little punks like you began to go "OMG I R TEH HAXXOR" whenever you ran motherf**&%^$#ing nmap.
- iperry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"Hacks" are the traditional term used by MIT students to denote clever pranks. There is a large gallery located at http://hacks.mit.edu
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14That's pretty cool, but to be honest I dugg the story just to be #1000.
- Louis11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Honestly, this is digg a technology related news site. Why then, do so many of you not know what a hack is? Just because it isn't related to computers or technology does not mean that it is not a hack. A hacker is someone highly skilled at what they do, wheter it be computers or mechanics. They use what they know to modify their enviroment for a better or more interesting functionality... in this case the MIT hackers modified (or hacked) the dome to show the Zelda Triforce. This is a hack, the word was not misused.
- DotNetMagic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11For those of you that don't see how this is "hacking", check out the book "Nightwork: A History of Hacks and Pranks at MIT."

Hacking has a different definition at MIT, it's more humorous, and often has nothing to do with computers. - CandidateZero, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14The Golden Power! I... I've finally found it, after all these years of fruitless searching, the desires of my heart shall be granted at long last!
- bolerobell, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14You've gotta be kidding me. They put up maybe 100 pounds worth of materials. That's easy compared to a car.
It is a great practical joke, but it isn't quite up to the level of previous efforts. - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIT_hacks
edit: Bah, beaten to it. Brief explanation: Insane, elaborate pranks on the MIT campus = hacks. - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Considering all he can say is "Hiii-yah!" or "Ahhhh!".... hmm.. I'd have to go with "Hii-yah!" on an occassion such as this.
- dimension128, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm quite surprised nobody has suggested the jargon file yet and instead keep referring to various dictionaries and whatnot.

- ggko, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"Thank you Mario! But the Wii over at Caltech's campus!"
- reldruh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7I have some friends at MIT and that's how they use the word hack, as a synonym for prank. And the top of the great dome is the preferred place to put hacks like this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Someday I would like to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Tool.

i figured for some MIT kiddies they'd at least go the whole way and build a proper looking triforce that looks good from all angles and not some cheap propped up wooden piece of crap - jamesvaughn, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I just ate a big freakin' mushroom and am totally huge right now.
- imAmooMOOcow, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1"HO HO HO MERRRY CRISTMAS!" said an unsuspecting santa. Little did he know that the the lights he was headed toward were NOT that of Saint Jude's hospital for children, but that of MIT. Too bad reindeer dont have 4WD and TCS....
cool hack though - Jasdar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Wow, it really exists.
