- Sabretou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31That's where the awesomeness of the Worms series comes in. :D
- Kerath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Red Faction?
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28I keep reading about these games with destructible environments but I've never seen one that actually does it right. Until I see a game with real-time non-pre-scripted terrain deformation and objects with no pre-determined break points (Euphoria seems to be making this a reality), no game in my eyes is fully destructible.
- adcat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Destructable environments? Yawn. Let me know when they come out with a sequel to Monkey Island.
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11for the best destructible environments, play Scorched Earth.
- mykos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Until now, it wasn't possible to have fully destructible environments. With procedurally generated terrain, however, you can blast holes a million miles down. The possibilities are endless! And probably boring, if you take it far enough.
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Piracy. Consoles today are nothing more than a closed, locked-down computer. DRMed from the ground up.
- MrSidnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I'm probably going to get dugg for for this one, but i think the gameplay video there looks terrible. To have a game based on the idea of terrain deformation is kinda weak. It looks more like a techdemo (much like the Mass Effect video that went around the web several months ago). All I see is the ground going up or down, and some stuff falling into holes. Where's destructible bridges and buildings? Crysis looks promising with its vegetation system, see nothing of the sort in this vid. Looks like the only thing this is doing that no one else has done is simply deforming the terrain at runtime.
I'ld love to see another video, in hopes that there's more to it than just this. I guess I'll find out soon. - LocalScope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8As said kerath Red Faction had this already. They called it GeoMod. Anyone who has every played a few MP games of RF know how fun it is to create shortcuts to kill people who try to run away or to make "pits" they can fall in if they arent careful. :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Faction - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Go back to TIE Fighter.
- aplusjimages, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I remember the promises of Black having a very destructible environment, but then I bought the game and discovered that most of the environment isn't. The game was fun though.
- MMilitia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Intellectual Property
- PATSCRU, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8why the ***** is there no PC release? does lucasarts hate us?
- MMilitia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's strange how despite all the advances in technology no one has been able to best Red Faction when it comes to destructible environments. Sure you could only blow up certain materials (concrete basically) but it still worked out better than the majority of other games that attempted similar things.
This game looks kind of lame. :/ - PlayWithFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can someone please tell me what IP stands for in this context?
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Give us a new xwing alliance with some yuuzahn vong thrown in
=( - smek2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Euphoria seems to be making this a reality" - Well, guess what technology LucasArts is using for their next-gen StarWars title and, presumably, for Fracture as well.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Check the first two videos in this list;
http://video.yahoo.com/video/search?p=the+force+unleashed - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Look at the tech demo videos for the new star wars game 'The Force Unleashed'. Lucas Arts is doing exactly what you're describing.
- ripple123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This tech is as new as magic carpet. That was a fun game.
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I remember some of the MechWarrior games had sort-of a limited ability to destroy environments when you shot certain spots. MW3 is the one I remember best. Building's would break apart, bridges would fall, craters in the ground would appear. All pre-scripted effects, but considering when it was made it was pretty nifty.
- MikeSobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It made every game different which kept things interesting. There would be some crazy tunnels on Checkmate. Here's a link for those that don't remember the map names.

We are getting closer, HL:E2 will have buildings that cruble and break according to damage incurred and pretty soom we'll have games with land deformation like Worms.
I remember seeing the tech videos for their engine they're using for the game and it had some pretty interesting things. Like realistic glass, wood and rubber would shatter, splinter and compress like real rubber.
Edit: @adcat
They did. Two of them. - imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So it's like ExciteTruck? Also, warping the ground isn't exactly destroying anything.
- Strell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So do I get to play as Anthony Hopkins?
- phronko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I immediately thought of Magic Carpet when I saw the demo.
That was an awesome game back in the day. I still have never seen anything quite like it. - grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, Magic Carpet had fully destructable environment, XCom:UFO had it, Syndicate Wars at some as well, its not exactly a new thing, its just that developers have preferred to go static for the last years, since that allows better graphics (precalculated lightmaps and such won't work in a dynamic environment), only recently have the PCs and consoles become fast enough to make good graphics without all those precalc tricks.
- AnotherCanadian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1soldiers: heroes of ww2 had exactly that. in fact, levels usually demanded a building to be shot through. it was awesome every time
- Sethbacca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They really need to make a new Xwing Vs TieFighter game based on current tech. *drool*
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good things can come out of bad games. It's the engine that counts really, how you deploy it and what it can do.
- korvan504521, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1developers believe that modern entertainment needs to be based around a single character or concept, so that they can have recurring nature. They like to bet on sure things, and sequels tend to generate cash regardless of quality. new ideas are more risky.
So the current belief is that having a successful business relies on a successful series, like warcraft for blizzard, or Madden for EA. - Witchboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally I love seeing stuff like this: Core shooter gameplay built around a tech feature. Even if it's not totally new, it looks fun to me. (I mean, Populous featured similar effects, way back in the day.) Destructibility/changeable environments = reactions to the player's input, which is cool. Stranglehold has a bunch of amazing destructible stuff. And we're doing *some* destructibles for Blacksite. I'm looking forward to seeing how Fracture feels.
- drapelyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was skeptical at first, but after watching the video I think it looks like it might be good. I have never played RF2, but I spent countless hours as a young child digging through the environment with rocket launchers on the first Red Faction. You could make rooms and tunnels to other parts of the game. It was awesome.
- Metaridley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The main reason why destructible environments aren't fully destructible has nothing to do with current system limits...it has everything to do with game progression. Would Halo be fun if you could just bring down the walls in front of you until you got to the end?
- dcormier, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Sounds like they've never played Tread Marks.
http://www.ldagames.com/treadmarks/ - grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The terrain deformation reminds me of MagicCarpet, however overall I am rather disappointed, the destruction shown seems to be limited to simple heightmap deformation, which really isn't new, a real world environment with destructable buildings would have been much more impressive.
- jockser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1how original
- RoyRP216, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@sabretou
I think you mean Scorched Earth :-) - Shaflugi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Looks like the only thing this is doing that no one else has done is simply deforming the terrain at runtime. "
Didn't NiGHTS do this YEARS ago? - JagoX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Funny...I was thinking the same thing except that "Black" was a craptacular game. Being able to blow everything up gets a little old after a while if there is no real story or motive to keep you going.
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not true, There are a lot of restrictions on destructible environments, like real world physics. Bullets and energy blasts wouldn't blow through a steel reinforced wall on a spaceship, and if you were to shoot a rock it would only chisel away at it and not blow it up. Level designers will compensate for destructive environments. Expect to see a lot more open ended environments instead of complexes.
- midimonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Granted, it's for a different game, but I was under the impression that one of the major selling points of 'Star Wars: The Force Unleashed' is that it will offer the much the same experience, using both the Digital Molecular Matter and Euphoria engines as a base? The article doesn't go into much detail, but it would be interesting to find out how this will be different from the aforementioned - from a technological perspective.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's about time someone did something with destructible terrain (Other than Red Faction). Although it remains to be seen if Lucasarts will follow through.
I remember like it was yesterday the awesomeness of those 2 damageable pillars in Zanzibar in Halo 2. That was the *****. Bungie really came through on that one. - dodgyd55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1love the idea, and it looks fun, but the actual game play doent look that great, guess wait to see if they improve it closer to release
- muitosabao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0iup, Magic Carpet. That was an extremelly good and inventive game. Wonderful concept which i am really sorry no one else picked up for a sequel. Would love to see a next gen remake, the gameplay was just awesome!
- TrojanGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That looks pretty bitchin'!
- Zaphodi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Red faction, Xcom: apocalypse and the best i have seen to date by far : Silent storm
- augmension, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not bad, the visual effect of the ground deforming is delicious. It's about time someone did something new to add to the redundant shooter formula (cough Halo cough). I definately like new toys.
- azizrulez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ive heard that the new battlefield has some really destructable environments, dont know if its gonna be turned into reality...
- REUYL, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Even if this game doesn't feature *fully* destructible environments, you've got to admit, DMM and Euphoria are two massive technologies that will shape the future of gaming- and LucasArts is bringing them to the market as fast as they possibly can.
