- JeremyL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I can see it now. Wii will have their own spokesman like Subways Jared.
- Segitz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22The PS3 is a better workout machine.
Weighing in at about 5kgs (10lbs) lugging it around alone will make you look better! - robotsongs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Can't wait till DDR comes to the Wii. Two controllers and a dance pad sound fun and the cardio is gonna rock!
/end justification for buying a gaming console at 28. - kfconme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13they do. It's an overweight plumber from brooklyn.
- calepeeples, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12People seem to missing the point that he's exercising (as opposed to not exercising) and the wii is helping to keep him motivated. All the gym memberships or bicycles in the world won't help if you're not motivated to use them.
He found a great motivator - good for him. - looker1010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Keep up the good work Eldorian :)
- crtjer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8skipping meals messes up your metabolism.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Nice! I'll have to bookmark this (as weird as it seems).
I've been saving a little money to buy a macBook or a cheap (very very cheap) laptop I can install Kubuntu on, but I've since decided that I'm going to buy a Wii, for the same reason you've posted this- to lose weight.
I'm curious, what are some good games that are very aerobic?
(Wow, it's getting to the point where I can literally say games are healthy. Take that Mom!) - guitarh3ro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's an awesome idea, but seriously, why not just go take a walk or ride a bike or something?
- FizixMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not taking enough calories. 700+- a day? That's about a third of a normal healthy man. This eating habit/diet is probably not a healthy way of going about it and probably shouldn't be promoted. Dugged down as "inaccurate". Can still do a "Wii" diet, just eat properly. A slimfast shake & two lasagnas is not healthy.
- inurb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8what a fat nerd bastard. good for him.
- NetJunkie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If you're burning 25 calories per minute I'd like to know what you are doing. A good workout on a treadmill or elliptical is about 8 to 10 calories per minute.
- smedrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"If you're seriously sweating with a Wii, you are OVERDOING IT."
That's the point, champ. The game is just something to keep you interested. You're in charge of how much effort you put into it. If you want to just play the game you can sit on a chair and flick your wrist. But if you want a workout from playing Wii Tennis, jump around and swing your arms. - crtjer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Isn't this the whole point of the article to see what you can do at home without spending more money than you need to? Especially during the winter months. The difference being your working out and enjoying it. Lifiting weights and running on the treadmill can get boring and this person is showing an alternative to these methods. If you have read the wii sports experiment, not many calories are burned in a 20 minute session, but it makes a difference in toning. This is just to show people who are ultra lazy or don't want to go to the gym can get a little physical activity. Don't diss the kid.
- guregu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Calorie burning also depends on weight and muscle mass. People of different sizes and shapes will burn more and less. 500 seems really high though. I am an average sized dude doing 30 minutes of HIIT on the treadmill and I burn 200 - 300 calories. That is at an 80% heartrate. Of course, doing HIIT will cause your body to continue to burn calories hours after the exercise.
- shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This guy did the experiment already. (Then again, he was already in relatively good shape)
http://wiinintendo.net/2007/01/15/wii-sports-experiment-results/ - sysoprock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Best of luck to you, but before you lose all your weight I have one request:
Attach a single Wiimote to the end of each of your sagging man-titties and attempt to play Wii Tennis vs. yourself, then post the footage on your site. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Oh *****.
At 80% of your maximum heart rate for 20 minutes, yes, you will burn 400-500 calories easy. Put a heart monitor on and see for yourself. It's called running.
Either that or HIIT. Get your heart rate up to 90% then keep it at 65-70% for a minute or two. Repeat for 20 minutes. 500+ calories easy.
A good workout on a treadmill is MORE than 8 to 10 cals a minute. You kidding me? Maybe if you're doing 70% heart rate, but 80% is the sweet spot. - catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -13/+17My aids helped me lose weight.
- crtjer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What about winter?
- dxk3355, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Using Harris Benedict Calorie Needs Formula for Men which is for the number of calories you need to maintain your weight
His height is 180 cm, he weighs 120 kg, and I can't find his age but from the age of 21 to 30 it wouldn't vary much.
66+(13.7* Weight(kg) )+(5* Height(cm) )-(6.8* Age )
Multiply this by your activity level
If you are sedentary (little or no exercise, desk job) multiply by 1.2
If you are lightly active (light exercise/sports 1-3 days per week) multiply by 1.375
If you are moderately active (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days per week) multiply by 1.55
If you take heavy exercise (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days per week) multiply by 1.725
He needs about 2900 to 4100 to maintain his weight by this calculation. - BigEasy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Aside from the obvious Wii Sports (especially boxing and tennis!), I've found that a number of the minigames in Rayman Raving Rabbids are surprisingly physically demanding, like the running or mine cart minigames.
- Eldorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now I learn what happens when the digg eddect hits my server, it's not pretty.
With that aside, I thank all who have wished me good luck. To those who feel like making fun of me for this, once the site comes back up, please feel free to read my about page and what I'm trying to do with this site. I think someone nailed it on the head that the Wii is what is motivating me, in fact, a big motivating factor was reading the results of the Wii Sports Experiment a month or two ago and wanting to do it myself.
I will keep doing this though, and I realize my calorie intake is way too low and I will be increasing that. Don't worry though, I haven't felt hungry or sick or anything, quite the opposite, I've been a lot more energetic in the last few days than I've felt in a long time.
If anyone has any thoughts on what kind of snacks or what I should add to my diet for more calories that's healthy, please add them and I'll get some stuff at the store tonight on my way home.
Thanks for the support, I really appreciate all the comments (even the negative ones). - libertao, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Obviously there are much more efficient ways to lose weight, but if the person finds those methods boring and stops going to them, clearly it's better to find a method they enjoy. There's a reason why there are tons of different aerobic exercises around with differing levels of efficiency. Not everyone wants to do plain running.
- soulfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You shouldn't skip meals. Breakfast is very important for your metabolism. I eat like 6 times a day and my metabolism is on fire. I eat about three meals, and three snacks. I also lift 4 times a week and practice martial arts 3 times a week for about 2 hours each time.
- gardnmi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I seriously think that change in your diet and eating habits had more of an impact than you playing the Wii.
- BlkGuyAtThePrty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3badbox - you're going about telling people about HIIT in a poor manner. Shame, people will associate your rant with HIIT and decided they'd rather spend an hour on an elliptical to burn 500 calories vs spending 20 minutes on an Erg or Treadmill to do the same and grow more explosive.
- fantasticjon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the point of an exercise plan like this is that is is actually something you might enjoy doing. Some people enjoy traditional exercise, most do not. Hence the looking for an alternative.
- BlkGuyAtThePrty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think its great that anyone living a sedentary lifestyle can find inspiration in a device like the Wii. If anyone continues this type of program with the combination of a proper diet and regular Wii-xercise, results can be found. At some point though the limitations of the Wii as an exercise tool will place the user on a plateau where he or she will be forced to move on to more challenging exercise tools - something that will promote muscle growth.
Good luck to all of you who've decided to give this a try; I'll be waiting for you at the gym. - reboare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nazi concentration camps had rations around 1500 a day. This is a heart attack waiting to happen. Where is all the protein coming from? Your muscles...what is your heart? Oh yea, a muscle.

- Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who cares what he does? He is doing something which is more then 90% of all Americans.
- soulfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just need a way to gain muscle with the Wii.
- soulfire, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7If your a guy and 10lbs is a lot of weight to you, you might want to work on being less scrawny.
- tokyopimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think playing Wii Sports boxing for a long time is a pretty god darn good workout. I don't know about you, but when I play it I really get into it and sweat, but that's just me.
So I don't understand why the ***** so many of you ***** are coming on here and claiming using the Wii as exercise is *****. Oh it's not as good as a gym, it's not as good as this or that. WHO THE ***** CARES, if it works for him and he gets his heart rate up what the ***** does it matter? A bunch of no it all gym membership workout freaks come on here acting like this isn't a good idea, shut the ***** up. Obviously it's fun to him, it gets him moving and it's motivating stop trying to tell him he's doing something wrong or he can't loose weight with the Wii... bull ***** *****.
Lots of people loose weight in different weighs... look at the ***** who ate Subway, and walked. Surely it won't work for everyone, but it worked for him. So STFU and let people do what they want. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6It appears most people are uneducated about exercise (not at all surprising) or how the body works when it comes to exercise.
DDR is a form of HIIT where you exert a lot of effort for a short period of time then spend another short period of time resting. So say you play a song and you're going at a reasonable speed, your heart races and you begin to sweat... but not for THAT long.
Then the song is over, you rest. It "tricks" your body into burning more calories because it doesn't know what's going on.
You simply cannot do that with a Wii. No game on there is intensive enough that requires you to move the remote fast enough to where you're out of breath. Just because you're moving doesn't mean it's a workout. Yeah, it's better than playing something stationary, but not much better. The whole point is working out is to get your heart beating at an aerobic (or short burts of anaerobic) pace for a specified duration - and you just can't get it to that point with a wii... period. - Mach1Chris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3700 calories a day, most from preservatives, is going to KILL THIS KID. Someone knock some sense into him, this is INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS!
- heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Great Work!
I'm the guy from WiiNintendo that did the "Wii Sports Experiment" and it's great to hear success stories.
Since my experiment I've teamed up with the fitness site, http://www.Traineo.com and we created tools for measuring calories/weight/others using the Wii. Wii specific tools. Also, there is a Wii fitness group now on Traineo with 100's of people who have undertook this regimen.
Good Luck and keep it up. - Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You need your wrist weights to be white and have Wii on them?
Um.. wrist/ankles weights have been around long before the Wii. - nowayhoseb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I personally like the "Sony Wega 36 inch CRT 200lbs opt out of circuit city delivery and try to bring it home yourself" diet.
Fixes a back too. - DAVIBE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try DanceDdanceRevo with EyeToy youll lose weight faster.
You can play WII while sitting on yur ass. but not DDR. - Patty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good luck El...I hope you achieve your goal.
- jordan314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1people have already made wrist weights so you can lift weights while playing wii. Can't find the addy though.
- jayfehr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's the funniest thing I've read this week. May do it myself.
P.S. Sorry for the valueless comment. - RavenBlade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Eldorian, to be totally fair, your eating habits alone can dramatically change the distribution of body fat even without the daily Wii workout. Given you're striving for around 2,000 calories a day, which seems quite acceptable for your weight, you will notice that when you do eat far too few calories, your weight drops little if at all.
This could simply be explained by the fact that your body is retaining its fat in preparation for a fast, the natural response to a dramatically low caloric intake.
Playing the Wii is all well and good, and with vigorous and high intensity movements (the likes of which you are almost bound to get when playing Wii sports and that's about it), you can definitely get a decent aerobic workout.
That said, untill they get a Wii fitness game, where the nunchuck and Wiimote are tracked to follow aerobic movements to a timed challenge or beat (something like Elite Beat Agents but with physical movement) your benefits solely from playing Wii will be limited and in fact it's quite easy to simply attribute your weight loss to your change in eating habits.
That said, you're doing well, and should definitely keep it up. Keep drinking lots of fluids and hitting around 300 calories below your maintenance rate and you should do well with or without the Wii.
Also, for those who comment on the beauty prep-time before going to a gym, you're DEFINITELY in the wrong environment. Those are those commercial luxury gyms with spandex wearing, new-years resolutioners. Those places are crowded and the majority of activity there isn't working out, it's checking the other members (and yourself for that matter) out in one of the many mirrors that cover ever square inch of the walls. A sad sight.
Get a more hardcore gym where less people go and those who do go are there to work. - dnite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@shosterman
The other experiment was an experiment to see if playing the Wii for a half an hour a day without changing any other parts of his day to day life would result in a decent weight loss. So this is a little more, full out diet and exercise than that one.
Both seem to be doing good though. Keep up the good work! x=) - reconflux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Segitz
Yes, but you only have to throw it out of your window once. =P - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think he was going for a play on Patton/Apu's "You Magnificent Bastard!"
- pirategaspard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like someone above me said, Wario Ware is a great game for working out. It can really get your heart pumping. The mini games are fast paced and will have you moving around a lot more than Wii Sports.
