- conorryan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30What? STFU didn't make it?
- carrmatt, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25No thanks. I don't want to spend the next four years in your parent's basement.
- RyGiL, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Actually, the more people playing WoW on campus, the more college chicks that are available to the guys who do not play WoW.
(this statement is based on the notion that most of the people playing WoW are not college chicks) - Sagarian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Applicant101: New CS grad 4.0 GPA LFJ
JobMkt: LOL N00B! - jonny2x4, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15That's not a list of who plays the most, its a list of who visits your website the most.
- Mabu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I weep for the future.
- tdyer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Yeah, cuz thats a wonderful reason to choose what school to go to.
I know many good students that dropped out due to that terrible game. - apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Yea this is totally stupid. As jonny2x4 said... its a list of who visits your website... not who plays WoW. Small websites like this are usually passed along via word of mouth or other methods to your friends at school. So apparently this website it popular at UW. Thats all this means.
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10agreed. not to mention it only tracks IP subnets on campus, not off campus.
- Mnnnm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10St. Francis University? :P
- ejschaefer, on 04/16/2008, -1/+8"Hey I could be out boozing it up to the point of near death only to bang some skeezey ho and get a disease while doing it!"
Stop you're making me all misty eyed.....oh memories - theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They are behind Friends University of Central Kansas and Springfield Heights Institute of Technology.
- hometoast, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8amen. reported inaccurate.
- sjk8990, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6God forbid you choose a school that can educate you.
- DogzOfWar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, as a former Penn State student i'm also highly suspicious of these numbers. Back in my day, there was tons of Quake, Starcraft and Everquest players. I remember playing Red Alert 2, which did a decent job of sorting mutliplayer games by ping time, and i was always surprised by how many Penn Staters there were online.
So i call shenanigans. Penn State students are second to none when it comes to wasting time playing games. - foofightrs777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This would be better if it took into account the size of schools. Clearly major universities have a major advantage here. A major state or private institution could have 10-20% of its population play and be near the top of the list. You could have a small school where 90% of the population plays but they're barely a blip on the radar, so to speak.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"The percentages shown depict the percentage of visitors to mapwow.com."
Exactly. It's entirely possible, if not probable, that there are universities with even higher levels of WoW use that don't show up simply because no one on campus has ever heard of mapwow.com - mr.hostility, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No way, when I can have sex with a 13th level magical dwarf by using my levitra spell!
- chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The percentages shown depict the percentage of visitors to mapwow.com. Still a very useful statistic, but I'd like to see a more popular World of Warcraft site like Thottbot.com or WorldofWarcraft.com post some percentages.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6What the! UW is the top o' the nation? That was my school. I was expecting more Techs or maybe Cornell or some such because it's isolated... but I guess we have a good CS department, and it rains a lot.
Really they should do a check of how many people own SNESes, or how many Pac-Man cabinets are on campus... or if they really wanted a nerd factor, they could check on MUDs and rank THOSE origin addresses. - fahrvergnuugen, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Id rather choose the school that plays the LEAST warcraft. I bet there are more hot chicks there.
I'm an RIT graduate (#3 on the list) - definitely a serious lack of chicks there . - WalterDirt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Exactly, obviously self promoting spam.
- MurphusBMaximus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5the people that play WoW at RIT are total losers, come to think if it anyone that plays WoW is a loser.
And before you go to give me a thumbs down re-evaluate your life. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Haha up here in Canada we have SFU and STFXU... So close yet so far.
- redking, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Get real. There has been a serious lack of chicks at RIT long before WoW. There just isn't much that would attract women to RIT. Since you're a grad of RIT, I would hope you were smart enough to realize that BEFORE you enrolled.
- NegroSuave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5If my kid was going to harvard and couldnt figure out how to balance recreation with school work. I would be pissed. My brother is going to Yale and hes been playing since the beta. Really the video game backlash is silly much worse things you could be doing with your time. "Hey I could be out boozing it up to the point of near death only to bang some skeezey ho and get a disease while doing it!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4later in the future, society will start talking in game lingo
- zmax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Stanford usually ranks as the #4 university in the US on the US News and World Report list, and it is also #4 in WOW. Nicely consistent.
Yeah Stanford!!!!! - redking, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8Believe it or not, a decent amount of college chicks do play WoW now. And some of them are pretty hot too!
- Mabu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In the future, people will put on their resumes, the race, class, phat lewt and level of their WoW characters, as this will be the most meaningful accomplishment this generation will have perpetrated.
- SSJemmett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Agreed.. marked as inaccurate.
- MoreBonez, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I knew a cute college chick (at UW, in fact). She told me she had started playing WoW. Then she shaved her head. She's not so cute anymore.
- SP33DFR34K, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"University of Washington tops the list for visitors to MapWoW. " This is soley based on the amount of the amount of people who visits the the MapWoW site. Now how the person derived those numbers, I don't know. But seems like just throwing a bunch of numbers around without giving us raw statistics (number of people in school) of how the person got those data. So defitantely inaccurate.
- D43PAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3RIT shouldn't hide who they are. If chicks new the starting salaries of most RIT grads the graphic design department would double in size.
Although this comment will probably fall on deaf ears. - TehOompa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Great. Now I can't go to any of those schools :(
- mattjvw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I am disappointed in the exclusion of CGNU.
- kevincupp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3#11! Hehe, I actually work as a system administrator here at Virginia Tech. We play Doom when people aren't bugging us.
- Photics, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Who cares if it's self-promotion? I submit my Guild Wars stories to DIGG all the time. They never make the front page. HA HA... so this story must be interesting to a lot of people.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yes, I personally play Wc3, but not WoW.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2and it only posts raw numbers, not wow players/total # of students
- cohortq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2UCI is only a pitiful 16th. For the University that has Blizzard HQ RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET!!! I for one, am very disappointed in my school.
- Tweidle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Exactly, as a small school alumni I'm still very impressed at the rating of DSU (Dakota State University) there are fewer than 2000 on campus students and they still ranked in at # 386.
-hehe 386 - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I usually don't give advice from people who confuse the words "consumption" and "combustion" much heed, but in your case, I'll make an exception.
- mapwow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2That's something that we're working on fixing as we speak. However, most of the domain names that have caps in them didn't receive many hits, so they shouldn't affect the actual rankings.
- mattjvw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3On the massive Xserve cluster, I hope.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I wonder this that list would also correspond to the 25 schools with the ***** marks.
- Brett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"neteducation.com"
Hmm? what the heck do they do? Proxy through?
"debtreductionservices.com"
Interesting. I would that WoW is the last place a person should be if they are seeking these services... - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2We just multitask far better. Although you may be correct; rumor is someone was working on H1ghlander's GPS/speed systems while playing WoW and, well, we lost. Oops.
Just kidding. And no, I don't touch WoW, though I have seen a couple play it during lectures. And, to be fair, MIT is also listed at #283, which would water down its results quite a bit. - irriadin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Penn State students are second to none when it comes to wasting time playing games."
Without a doubt. I'm a current penn state student, and nearly EVERYONE I know plays WoW or some other game. - afpunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Interesting. However, its highly inaccurate. To add to what's already been said before, there's also the problem that this only counts people who visit from the campus network. At my school, Penn State, less than a quarter of the students live on campus. Still managed to end up 30th on the list though anyway. (And for the record, no, I don't play WOW)
