- b0wl0fud0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25I was just there and the line wasn't bad at all. Everyone who was there got a Wii as long as they received a white bracelet. I go there around 9:30pm and got out of the store at 2:50am. A lot of people were concerned that Zelda might be in short supply but it actually wasn't a problem. Nintendo made extra sure that the launch site had plenty of Wii's. From what I saw, there were 3-4 boxcars of Wii's at 44th street waiting to be unloaded. To make sure that they had enough, they came around counting the number of people in line (1100 people were in front of me apparently and I'd say 400-500 people behind me) at around 11:30pm after which I believe that they sent the extra Wii's back to the warehouse or the Nintendo showcase store up the street. Once inside, things were a breeze. They made sure that there was enough to move around and find exactly what you needed to find. The consoles were in front, followed by Zelda and then additional games and accessories in the back. I ended up picking up Wii, Zelda and Red Steel. I'm a pc gamer and I'm really excited about the Wii which is unusual for me since I've always shunned consoles in the past. What made me get the Wii was the fun factor to it rather than the graphics. I have an up to date PC system, and consoles have never really appealed to me since my computer setup has always outpaced the console games. However, I decided to pick a Wii because it is a console that I can play with my non-gaming friends and have a lot of fun with. The PS3 just didn't appeal to me because for that amount of cash, I'd just end up getting an 8800gtx or ATI's RS600 as well as Crysis when it comes out for much better graphics. Although I haven't played it that much yet, I'm really satisfied with my purchase and look forward to playing it with my friends.
- rctech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Nice touch on the "Segwii"... How did they power the monitor and console anyway?
- pjleonhardt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I love how the countdown banner says "A new style of gaming is unleased..."
- RenZ87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I was talking to the guy who wrote this article at the Starbucks at 45th at the exact time he actually wrote it. I feel cool now. Anyways I got my Wii, Reggie!!!!!!
- jcmad5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12And that's it! Thanks for sticking around... we'd also like to thank the whole Nintendo staff for pulling off a drive-by-shooting-free event, lol
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9My god, those pictures make it look like it's New Year's Eve, not Wii launch! Excellent.
Just out of curiosity, did PS3 have anything similar when it launched or was it low key? - swOhio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9RenZ87, yes you got your Wii. So did the other 2600 people who were in line and they still had more than 1000 Wiis after that. That's how you launch a console. Everybody who came went home happy and people who waited until the morning won't be dissappointed either it seems.
- xerus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I see Reggie in these photos. Reggie owns. Therefore, I digg.
- krunkosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I got a Wii!
After seeing the Digg article on the Time Square Toys "R" Us having 7,000 Wii''s I high-tailed it over there. Got there around 1am. The line wrapped around the building and down the block. We got at the end and they apparently weren't taking any more people in the line without a white Wii bracelet or preorder slip. We were about to leave but some guy sold us his bracelets (he had 2) for $20 each. We ended up leaving the store by 3:30am with 4 Wii's. :O
Don't hate.
Took some video of the line.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpojoVXsS6s - milomilomilo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7i drove around for 4 hours tonight trying to find a wii.... went through 2 counties and not a wii to be found..
Nintendo launched what? 2 million tonight and not a store has one left. Im in shock.
demand filling launch numbers my wii-less ass
>:( - Coy0te, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Looks like a much more diverse crowd then there was at the PS3 lines.
- SAOSiN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is this the most hyped/anticipated console release ever?
- anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Got a wii but no extra controller. They had much less controllers than consoles... whats up Nintendo? Didnt you get the memo? This console is supposed to be for multiple players..
- innerspirit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4there were barely enough PS3s country-wide to make such a line
- xrisnothing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I got my Wii fairly easily today at walmart. I was 11th in line for 20 systems. It was a ten hour wait for me. The thing I don't understand is why people insisted on waiting once the line was already past the 20 mark. Really, did they expect a dozen extra consoles to materialize at the stroke of midnight?
The day manager of the store was pretty nice, kept us up to date on stuff, etc. Originally, he said the store didn't get any copies of Zelda. Later that evening he said he managed to scrounge up 15 copies from other wal*marts.
I ended up with a system, Zelda, and an extra remote. It was a pretty good night. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wish I was in the US. Wouldn't mind queuing up for hours just to lay my hands on a console that I've anticipated for so long. It'd be a nice experience by itself, a gamer waiting for his console to be launched.
Unfortunately, where I'm from, consoles take months to launch without much fanfare and jacked up prices.
For those who got their Wiis, enjoy them! I still can't be thawed just yet. - tafkase7en, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So i'm guessing you didn't realize you could watch the event live on gamespot...
- Jedimonkey27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Same here. I only missed out at my local Wal-Mart by 10 minutes! The guy in front of me arrived 10 minutes before I did and he got the last one and no other place had any by that time. I am sad :(
- DjOverEZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Who knew Luigi was a brutha? I love it!
- Rpd9803, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I was 8th at one of the walmarts near me. Seems like every store doing a midnight launch within an hours drive of Rochester, NY sold out
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The most current story on the NY, NY launch - http://www.engadget.com/2006/11/19/wii-launch-wrap-up/
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice catch, didn't see that the first time around.
- GALILEE77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't realize so many people were on here from Rochester. I picked up my preorder from Gamestop in Penfield and then spent a couple hours looking for an extra controller (with no luck). If anybody knows of a place in/near Rochester where I can pick up an extra remote and nun-chuck I would really appreciate it.
On a side note- when I was looking for another remote at about 1AM I drove by the Penfield/Fairport Target and saw a group of people camped out for store opening. I didn't realize the store didn't open until 7AM (regular open) so I went over to see when they expected to get inside. When they found out I already got my wii and it was in the car, they asked if they could see it. I ended up taking it out of the box and showing the remote to people. Everybody was really cool about it and I think it gave them added strength to endure the cold and rain for another few hours. Also, it was cool to see other people who were as excited to be getting a wii as I was.
And as far as playing the wii goes- it rocks. I'm going back to it as soon as I hunt down an extra controller. - Noloco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2b0wl0fud0n your store rules..Man GS had everything behind the counter and all I got was a Wii. That of course is great..But no two controllers. :(
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think all of MN is sold out. We've checked everywhere, and they all sold out at open.
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Because the Nintendo store is tiny.. and the Toys R Us is ENORMOUS.
- nmcbean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1they had morning lotteries at Target / Best Buy at Marketplace mall... 42 at target and 87 at best buy i heard... people that didnt get it at target just went over to best buy to try to get it there....
i had a friend goto the marketplace walmart but they couldnt get a place in line, so they went to chili walmart.. where the line was full by 2pm
(yay rochester) - crsd36, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and Zelda, duah!
JK man, I completely agree with you, cant wait to play some Wii sports vs my roommates (they're out of town for thanksgiving break). Hopefully by Saturday I will be able to find some more controllers somewhere. - mastahack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i just returned from buying my wii and all of my acessories. total price = 492.94 dollars, but still worth it!
- REpler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I'm curious, why didn't they hold the launch at the Nintendo store in Rockefeller Center (on 48th)?
- JesseH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was there last night it was pretty damn cool. I went after work at about 5:30 pm at which point the line was about 1/2 down 45 St. I didn't get to go in to ToysRUs till about 1:15am. But it was all worth it cause they had a crapload of wiis and everything else you can think of. I just picked up a wii and zelda.
- SpenceMasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i was a sucker, i went to the nintendo world store at 4 pm and got my wii at 10:30 am the next day, there was a rumor that the store would have a midnight launch cause they did they same thing on ds launch, they said 8 am opening and opened at 12 to everyone;s surprise just not to steal the thunder from "official" launch sites, too bad it wasnt true
management was ridiculously stupid, they let preorders get theirs at 6 am and walked up and down the line to pull the ppl with receipts out, most of the line especially the front were walk ins, so everyone was booing and the people who waited for 16 hours+ were pretty pissed that preorder ppl who waited like 30 minutes got to go in first, and they were at first letting in 5 ppl at a time and it took them 3 hours to move the first 70 ppl into the store and out, the line was consistently around 2-3 blocks long all night and morning
did i mention that the toys r us where the launch was held was like 3 blocks away, stupid stupid stupid - derek20cali, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I hate new yorkers. Rude, arrogant *****.
- crsd36, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Bastard
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2My friend's doing the same from here is PA! Wiiiiiiii
- iamcool, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Has anyone played this and loved it? ( Besides Monster Truck ) I loved the idea of the wii from the get go, but the more I think about how I gaming, I think how I like to veg out and play, not swing my arms around.
I have a reserve for a system, but after playing the demo, I'm a bit reluctant. - livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Another reason to say:
I LOVE NY!
Do we know how to party or what??
