Did you read the news item before you posted it to DIGG.
Of course this means Linux on the 360. That's what the Bootloader is! - dj4site, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Before everybody gets too excited...
The major point is the kernel version it will work on. The following
was taken from another foum-
Quote- The exploit only works on versions of the kernel between build 4532 (released October 31, 2006) and build 4548 (released in on November 30 of the same year). The kernel bug that the hack exploits was introduced by that first build, and patched by Microsoft in version 4552, which was released on January 9. As such, the hack will only work on Xbox 360s that were connected to Xbox Live and received patches up until October but were then disconnected from the Internet and left unpatched since then. Microsoft was able to issue a patch so quickly because the hackers contacted them in December with full details of the exploit.
In other words, if your 360 does not fit this description you will be
unable to perform this hack. And it is so far impossible to downgrade
your firmware to 4532. Even if you were somehow able to downgrade it you
would not be able to play on xbox live anymore.
There are probably only a few thousand 360's worldwide that can be used.
If you don't have one.... forget it. It won't work. - SteaminTmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8if you don't mind not having Hi Def capabilities, the original Xbox is a kick-ass media center using XBMC. You can put one together from soup to nuts for around $200
- raid517, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8What's with all of the negative diggs for people who like the prospect of running Linux on the XBox 360? I'm guessing it has something to do with certain uninformed people who probably think that this is in some way associated with piracy.
I am sorry to burst your bubble, but the fact is that this has nothing to do with piracy at all.
Anyway, I guess I should inset an obligatory 'screw you' comment here, since plainly when someone does finally release a video of Linux running on the 360, your negative diggs are likely to count for nothing. - cJw314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sure ya do, Turp.
We all do.
-.- - mlapaglia, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9damn awesome, finally, linux on the 360.. with a 3 core processor... 512 mb ram... MMMM MMM GOOD!
- bml104, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Nice, to bad my motherboard is patched! hopefully another exploit will come soon.
- beakerbreak, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13Good to see some real progress for XBOX360Linux!! Great JoB!!
- Textbook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@o0joshua0o,
Not difficult at all.

Microsoft released the 4532 update for download on their website because it supported HD-DVD and people who didn't have Xbox Live could download the update, burn it to a CD/DVD, and use that to update their kernel and dashboard to 4532. Of course, they have since removed this update from their site and replaced it with the patched kernel. So I'm hosting it for them :P
Noobs please note: Upgrades old kernels to 4532, will not downgrade if you have a later kernel - chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you can't compile it, then you have absolutely zero chance of getting the rest of it working. You need a serial cable soldered to the xbox motherboard, and a decent knowledge of serial commands.
- DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@PecanHead - If you knew anything you'd realize that there are no 360 mod chips, and that modding the 360 to play backup copies of games is as simple as replacing the firmware of the drive (read: easy if you know what you're doing, and also free)
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Unless things have changed, the loader only has access to one core... and only on an old kernel version (xbox260 kernel, not linux) which cannot be downgraded because of a digital fuse that is blown durring the upgrade that was seeded from xbox live. Still, this is some very interesting progress.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I agree - and I'd like to add, that just because you play copied games, doesn't' mean they were pirated. I myself backup my games, been burnt by "no returns/exchanges" on games, so I back mine up, and put the originals in a safe place. I've already had my xbox scratch 2 originals, I downloaded them and burned them, where's the piracy? Everyone jumps to conclusions, way too fast, unless it's their own business, so stay out of mine (ours).
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I pirate some games before I buy them do to absurd rental fees, but any game I play more than an hour I buy.
- mczolton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Haha! Maybe these mouth-breathers could post a story about the Linux spell checker.
- angerwound, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yes, using the original bootstrap to execute custom code or under linux you could dump the Keyvault and extract key 0x1A being the ODD key.
- bml104, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Will this eventually help us find our lost DVD key from the motherboard?
- bml104, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3But will i need firmware hack to load the hypervisor exploit?
- eSoul, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I for one can not wait for this to blossom into a full linux distrobution. Reminds me of the early xbox linux days, albeit much easier to implement. I can't verify this at all, but for those with non-updated xbox360's, awesome purchase for possibly another good desktop machine or media center device.
- vannoy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This is pretty sweet and my hat goes off to the people who released this, but I will be holding off on getting overly excited when a solution that works on updated 360s comes out.. This boot loader will work on what 2-4% of the 360 systems out in the wild now?
- eSoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I for one do not care much for online, and excuse me for not wanting MS to control what I do with my purchased hardware. If I had the funds, I would purchase a 360 and pray it hasn't been patched to a non-exploitable kernel already (any word of them shipping already crippled boxes?), and try this out. I'm always one that likes to tinker and get my hands dirty, and if it means my xbox360 being able to act as a full Linux machine sometime in the future when this is more developed when I do it, then so be it.
I know that online play is a big thing with the 360, and thats how Microsoft markets the console, but am I not the only one that sees that I can play games online (usually free minus software purchase) on my computer. If I needed playmates that bad for my 360 just to play it, maybe I didn't really need it myself in the first place. - JimmyB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You can get HD working on the original Xbox without updating the CPU at all. Just buy an HD AV pack (component connections), go to your dashboard, and enable HD TV settings. I have mine set at 720p, works beautifully for Xbox Media Center. This will only work on NTSC Xboxes (PAL Xboxes can run an app which switches video mode to NTSC, and the HD settings then become available).
Also, you can do it for much less than $200. Here in the UK you can get a used Xbox for £39.99 from GAME. Soft-mod it with an Action Replay and Splinter Cell (~£20 total), and you are sorted. Of course a new hard drive will cost, but XBMC will fit fine on the stock hard drive, and you can either play media from discs, or by streaming from a network share. - Izacus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Of course, bear in mind that some games upgrade your kernel version too, when they run... so don't be surprised if you find your console upgraded, even if it's not connected to xbox live.
- joper90, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ turp.. if ever there was a case for the o'rly owl.. this is it..
- ronjohn, on 02/04/2008, -0/+1sooo what's a bootlader?
- ronjohn, on 02/04/2008, -0/+1Why would you think you can't I do on my windows box ;)....
- eudaimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is an exciting project and it's cool that people will be doing it. I'm a proud owner of the XBMC, so I was jazzed about hacking my 360.
With that said, I have decided that I will NOT be hacking my 360. Hacked consoles tend to be pretty crippled/broken in the online world, and for the 360, online is everything. The whole thing is built around online. The risk that microsoft could just frag my 360 with an online update or an offline update on some game disc would be too scary :). - Sharkee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Ahh! They need to put an ISO up on BitTorrent, so common users wouldn't have to install linux just to compile the source. It seems like they would be able to distribute the compiled version, unless it requires proprietary MS stuff.
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2thanks for that so very useful contribution to the thread
- ronjohn, on 02/04/2008, -1/+1He's reffering to HD drive dude..
- PecanHead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@klawz - I call *****. How much did your mod chip cost? How long did it take you to research a mod chip and install it? Either your time is worth nothing or your 360 eats a ***** of discs for modding to be a wise financial choice for someone who doesn't pirate games.
Come on, you're a pirate and you know it. But don't worry, we won't hold it against you. - o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you were to buy a new Xbox 360 at a store now, how dificult would it be to install this particular firmware (build 4548) on it?
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2There are people that will upgrade the xbox cpu, and you can actually get HD running on XBMC.
- scotte, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What's a bootlader? Buried... Learn to spell...
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4you could look at porn in firefox.
- ifoundgodot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I guess he was confused as to what a "Bootlader" is.
- thenomadsoul, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0tutorial?
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Watch this hardlock 360s
- Terc, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Nothing like being dugg down for providing useful, relevant information.
- Btrash, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1BOOTLADER!
- chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Progress? Seems like alot of work to get Linux on the 360. Once they finally break through they'll be able to.... they could....um yeah I guess I don't see the point other then to smite Micosoft.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1If I have to open my 360 to get this to work, then I don't care.
Come back when there's a way to exploit by other means.
