Opposed to floating plastic, just as regular carriers are built using floating steel? - thecookie, on 10/12/2007, -4/+60Soon it will be sunk to create a reef!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -27/+81"That thing is MASSIVE!!!"
thats what SHE said - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+45LEGO® intorduces the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman AirCraft Carrier. For Ages 38+
When you order your U.S.S. Harry S. Truman Aircraft Carrier by LEGO®, It will be shipped to you in 5 large crates. You will need approximately 9 cubic feet to store the pieces. Made up of 50,000+ pieces, you are mere years away from completing your dream carrier. Good luck! - Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -12/+54I realize this is technically a duplicate story but, the last time this was submitted the project was incomplete.
- bazac, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42If this were British, it would be serving in Iraq by now.
- twertyto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36@Lumiras also
Whether an object floats or not doesn't depend on its weight or materials. If the object can displace enough water equal to it mass and stay above water then it can float. Archimedes principle.
That is usually done by design. So its possible this object could float. - DruSam, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Well, you're reading digg aren't you?
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28That thing is MASSIVE!!!
- 15charmaxwtf, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28That is why the title mentions "complete".
- warmonger48, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Anyone else think that Legos are one of the best things ever invented? Can't wait till I have kids so I can play with them when they get Lego bricks.
- schleppo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17bigstinky7, you take your kid to the vet?
- Waterboys, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21wow that thing floats!
- Composer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Why are you here again?
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18What the ***** makes you think he doesn't have one? Do you know him? Have you talked to him at all? Just because he put a lot of time and effort into something that you evidently seem to think is retarded, doesn't mean he has no life. He's obviously passionate about the Navy and building things out of LEGO bricks, so he combined the two into an awesome LEGO sculpture/model. Unless you actually know him or have talked to him, shut the ***** up. Let's see you build something just a cool or better than what he has done, smart ass.
- keeper1616, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Actually, sealing a Lego design that is going to be permanent isn't that hard. I made a 110ft inland patrol boat (coast guard) a few years ago and threw some scotch-guard on the hull. After about 6-7 coats, it was waterproof and did float. The only problem was with the cutter, It was a little top heavy and tended to flip. I doubt that would be the case with the carrier, but it would be hard to get the waterline right.
- Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13"where do you get that many lego pieces? seriously? do you have to by seperate kits? either way how much do you think that think costs just for the lego pieces?"
Bricklink.com is a market of lego collectors that sell lego by the part. Need that 2x3 black slope? You can find it there and buy it in bulk.
Generally that's where us "girlfriendless, nothing to do losers go". (not pointed at this poster but..)
I've got to say to all the people out there who don't understand this:
1. Not only does he have a Wife and kids, he's got a great life, great imagination and he's having fun. If you don't get it, you don't get it. I could easily say the same thing about peope who spend all day making logos for their linux boxes but I don't because I respect a good hobby.
2. What he's going to do with it: There are many Lego shows out there. This guy in is Europe where Lego is very popular (not that is isn't here). Thousands of little kids will love it. I guess some of you never had a pointless toy that you enjoyed despite your parents or your friends nt getting it. I feel sorry for you.
3. It was built from scratch.
I forgot to mention that it weighs in at about 350 pounds.
Yes lego DOES FLOAT when built correctly. This ship was built in sections so that he can move it from show to show so it would not. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22That thing is MASSIVE!!!
"thats what SHE said"
Before it sunk ;) - bigstinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Warmonger, I used to think the same thing before my son was born. Now it's become an endless parade of "pick-up", pain-(ever step on a Lego piece at 3 am with no socks on?), trips to the vet-(he put what, where?) and out and out frustration over where the "steering thingy" might be. Still, gotta love the Lego's. BTW, the fellow who builds the ships, as impressive as they may be, sure does have a lot of money and free time on his hands.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15"That is usually done by design. So its possible this object could float."
Are you kidding? Have you seen a lego? They're not all that "seamless" when you put them together. When you were done, you'd have to seal the entire structure, and with that much effort, what's the point? - mancat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10In response to all, "needs a girlfriend" posts:
Why does having a hobby mean that he doesn't have a girlfriend? If you're pussywhipped to the point where you can't have a hobby, you shouldn't have a girlfriend anyway. - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Says the guy who bothered to setup and create an icon for Digg.
- pu-z, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8And the costs will be in the eight digits!
- lbermude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What are you suggesting?
He has a wife and kids, Are you suggesting him to cheat on his wife?
I seriously dont understand you people. - chamblah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8even better, if can make enough of them, he could play Battleship
- danimal84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9where do you get that many lego pieces? seriously? do you have to by seperate kits? either way how much do you think that think costs just for the lego pieces?
- zenmouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8That's pretty incredible. I hope he doesn't have a kid brother!
- wmarcello, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I emailed the link to a friend and he emailed me back with this... easily just as impressive:
http://www.amyhughes.org/lego/church/photosfirst.html - SystemError, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8where can I order the kit? :)
- m4ff3w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Don't you mean "What is this guy going to do with a 16.4 foot long lego aircraft carrier?"
- bigstinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@schleppo, ...Perhaps I should rephrase that...OK, got me. I can appreciate it.+Digg for you! Actually, the cat was involved in the veterinary transaction. She's fine now. ^5
- Pokelicious, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Made me laugh and I'm British so +1 digg.
- skankyBacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why must digg users always reduce the measure of a man's life to whether he has a girlfriend or not?
Believe it or not, there is more to life than getting laid.
Lemme guess what the next response to this will be... - dillboy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Remember to take hi res photos of it sinking as it becomes the first Lego reef.
- kurige, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@dclowd9901
"and with that much effort, what's the point?"
So it's NOT an effort to build a 16.4 foot replica of an aircraft carrier... but it is would be too tedious to seal the hull of one? - DASH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Only think worse than legos at 3am is jacks!
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Now to get this puppy on Letterman!
/Willl it flooooat, will it float... Willl it floooat..../
Seriously, this took a lot of time and dedication. Good for you, man! - tenchiws, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Same thing you do with any model: admire the hard work you put into it. Seriously, have you never built some model airplane or something? It's called artwork.
- irock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think some multi-millionares with LEGO addiction will beg this guy to sell it to them...
- av4rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Believe it or not, people can spend hours a day doing geeky things and still get laid plenty.
People have trouble comprehending the concept multitasking. - Composer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I mean, think about it, it's probably cheaper to take your kid to the vet, and they probably deal with swallowed objects more than pediatrician's do.
- skankyBacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why? Seriously. A guy isn't allowed to have a hobby?
- rawsteak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5read the other comments, nincompoop. the guy that built this is european
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So is everything made from scratch? Are those jets from lego box sets, or did he design them?
- lbermude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Play with it!!!
Seriously, even if I am 60 years old I would.
I am sorry for you. I guess you did not have a childhood. - newAccount, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6He's waiting on a new shipment of legos before he can start on the girlfriend.
- roastedbagel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sweet ship
- Denver80203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why wait fo kids? I'm up to 700 pounds of the things
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7 alright, I give. It's not that plastic itself cannot float (i'm not an idiot), but it looks like this model in particular would be far too massive to have adequete buoyancy to float. Also, the fact remains that none of the pictures show the ship free floating in water
