- mlwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -268/+5WTF, this is just a voluntary user poll. This is BS. Furthermore, it's not even released yet.
- proxima, on 10/12/2007, -6/+88You're an idiot. It's not a user poll it's a review average. And yes, the game is out.
- nazuraki, on 10/12/2007, -8/+59Um. Yes, it is released. It came out on Sunday- the same day the Wii came out. And no, it is not a 'voluntary user poll,' it is an average of the ratings from 20 gaming publications.
By all means, keep saying stupid things though. - Harabeck, on 10/12/2007, -10/+35You're an idiot. It's not a random poll, it's a compilation of rankings from many sources I believe. And reviewers often receive the game before its official release.
EDIT: bah, too slow - DanteDefiance, on 10/12/2007, -25/+7@mlwarrior
What they said. - mlwarrior, on 10/12/2007, -114/+7Well, your right and I'm wrong, but a big ***** YOU, because you were dicks about it. Digg me down fanboys, do as I command!
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -28/+9What? One of the PS3 exclusive launch titles was not the greatest game of all time? I'm so surprised.
- Nitrodist, on 10/12/2007, -39/+5So by 20 game publications you mean 20 people? Amazing! Better title the story greatest games of all time! Like it isn't misleading!
- skywake, on 10/12/2007, -7/+67for the record (to shut up PS3 randoms)
the 'best' games for each 'next gen' console:
PS3 - Resistance: Fall of Man with 88.8%
360 - Gears of War with 95.2%
Wii - Zelda : TP with 97.0%
oh sorry? the PS3 plays PS2 games too?
ok, despite the fact that everyone else is backwards compatible...
I will go down that road... *sigh*
PS2 - Resident Evil 4 with 95.6%
oh noes.... looks like Nintendo has the better game!
:o - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6skywake... play nice
Resistance is a good game even if the game isn't as good as Gears of War... Those PS3 fanboys will claim the bluray is worth the extra money... - strikerK, on 10/12/2007, -19/+14ocarina of time will never be surpassed. ever.
- sabertooth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24Also note that the GC version of RE:4 was higher rated than its PS2 clone.
GC (95.9%) | PS2 (95.6%) - NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20You know, without that lousy 8.8 gamestop gave it... Twilight Princess would be the top.
But... 2nd is also very good in my book... because OoT will hold that classic top spot! - cplkai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@strikerK
What? I sure as hell hope Ocarina Of Time is passed on day. I'd hate to think that games are never going to get any better. - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8cplkai, take some solice in that Twilight Princess is a vast improvement on Ocarina of Time, I can say that from experience. It's everything OoT is and tons, tons more. To say OoT is a better game is ridiculous, it's just reviewers these days don't understand how to score things at all. The rankings system for pretty much every review outlet in existence is tilted and broken one way or another...
- Mitijea, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10For those complaining about the phrase "Greatest game(s) of all time", this is not a ranking of the greatest games of all time (as judged by todays standards), it is a ranking of the highest rated games of all time. There is a big difference. The ratings are from when the games came out (usually, though a few are "retro"), so a game like Tekken which by today standards might seem pretty weak is included on the list because at the time it was considered an awesome game (and rated as such). That's all this is.
Just wanted to clear this up for people who seem confused at what this list actually portrays. - sudonim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@cpikal
I doubt that Orcarina will ever be toppled from that spot not because it is and always be the greatest game of all time. But because at the time, Ocarina was so much better than everything else available, which is exactly what the reviews are based on. - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Didn't Gears of War get a higher average? Or Half Life Two? Or Splinter Cell Chaos Theory?
- Popdmb, on 10/12/2007, -14/+1Nice...and I think both games look incredible. But...
Final Fantasy VII continues to be the greatest game of all-time. The music, the dialogue, the gameplay, the materia system, the villain, etc. etc.
I'm a big Nintendo fan, but let's not go nuts here... - PvtJenkins, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3It's not worth getting all worked up about. A LOT of games end up high on that list with only 20 reviews. That's the bare minimum of reviews required in order for it to be ranked. Wait a few more weeks for the rest of the reviews to rush in. Then we'll have a more accurate rank against the others. RE4 started out number 2 when it only had 20 reviews too I believe. I'm sure it'll move down the list.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8"Final Fantasy VII continues to be the greatest game of all-time. The music, the dialogue, the gameplay, the materia system, the villain, etc. etc."
Kill yourself. Please. - Frebis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5FF VII didnt have any gameplay. You walked around, then it went to a battle screen, then you picked out of a menu how to attack the thing you are fighting. How is that gameplay? Maybe for a water head it is difficult but for us normal humans it is no challenge.

End of teh TOTALLY RELEVANT AND NECESSARY Final Fantasy VII argumentzorz!!!!11 - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Take that chart with a grain of salt.
Ocarina of Time has only had 32 reviews. Most of those reviews are post-2001. The game was released in 1998. Take a look at the kind of people who review a game 3-5 years after its release and chances are these are people who were fond of the game already, have already played it, and are just reviewing it out of nostalgia. They would have rated it high anyway.
Twilight Princess only has 21 reviews.
Resident Evil 4, Half-Life 2, and Halo all have over 90 reviews. The more reviews you get, the broader the sample. Anyone who read early Doom 3 reviews knows this simple fact.
Anyway, Nintendo released the Wii version first for a simple reason: so that their identical graphics didn't drag down the Wii reviews. - quetranza, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1These games are the gayest ever created. Great if you're a 12-year-old girl, or act like one.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Final Fantasy VII continues to be the greatest game of all-time. The music, the dialogue, the gameplay, the materia system, the villain, etc. etc."
You just named off the WORST aspects of the game. Especially the music. - Splizxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12nd greatest game of all time? I doubt that.
GoldenEye 007 for n64
Super Mario Bros 3 for nes
Final Fantasy 7 for ps
Half-Life for pc
and a ***** others I can't think of now.
- nazuraki, on 10/12/2007, -47/+11It would have taken #1 if it weren't for the completely ridiculous review the morons at GameSpot gave it.
- Harabeck, on 10/12/2007, -11/+37Oh noes, someone gave it an 8.8 instead of 9.8+! Games are somewhat subjective, some just won't get into it as much.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25Dude, I saw a petition to change that review...that's ***** lame. It's one guy's honest opinion, deal with it. I'm betting you haven't even beat it yet.
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10There was a digg story on that awful, awful review (sarcasm) for those that missed it: http://www.digg.com/gaming_news/Gamers_embarass_self_internet
- sulthernao, on 10/12/2007, -16/+10The problem wasn't the score it was the actual review. The guy was some what hypocritical basically saying "This is just like all the other Zelda games out there"... well you'd think it would be. Next he goes and compalins that the graphics suck, then says its pretty good graphics, and later says it sucked. Gamespot has been harsh on the Wii, there is no doubt about it. But do you honestly think that some other sites have been a little to lenient? Of course I personally believe that the game is more to wards a 10 than a 8.8.
- gameguy43, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14it IS true that the graphics are not stunning. it's basically a gcn game ported to the wii. but gamers who have stuck with nintendo have always understood its not about the graphics.
i could go on about how nintendo's genius is its emphasis on the feel of the game, which makes it more immersive simply by the responsiveness of the controls and "lightness" of characters, as opposed to creating a feeling of having to pass through this obstacle of an interface to control the character. I could then continue to describe how the wii was simply another step forward in this direction that nintendo was already good at simply made for more fun games, as opposed to shinier ones. I could go into all of that, but i wont. - Harabeck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I think the graphics are great really. Style counts for a lot, and TP's style is ingenious.
- straxus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I personally preferred Wind Waker's style, but I believe I'm in the minority on that. Either way, I like that they are willing to try different things.
- nazuraki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3An opinion can be wrong. When the vast majority of reviews rank it ~95/100, and one scores it a full 7 points below that, the reviewer's opinion is wrong.
- illegalcortex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"An opinion can be wrong."
That's BS. The very definition of opinion precludes wrongness. An opinion can be ABNORMAL. But that's a totally different thing.
An opinion could also be DISHONEST or BIASED. If the reviewer had some reason to try to lie about the product and rate it lower than they really felt. But even that probably isn't the case. If you are a rabid fan of a non-Nintendo system, you might actually seriously enjoy Zelda less because of that. - nazuraki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No. An opinion can be wrong.
Let's put aside the sentimentalized equal-opportunity *****. Just because a thought occurs to you does not make it equally valid as anyone else's opinion and, when that thought is opposing all others and is founded on nothing but crap, it is wrong.
His opinion is wrong. - illegalcortex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Again, an opinion can only be wrong if you change the definition of "opinion." I guess like 1+1=3 for exceedingly large values of "1". What next, I'm wrong that my favorite color is green?
- aweraw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@nazuraki
I'm as big a Nintendo fan as they come, and I disagree with any sub 95% score given to Zelda...
BUT
It's your opinion that the gamespot review is wrong. It is not fact
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20I agree it is a great game, i am loving it. I haven't enjoyed a console game this much since the n64. the wii is almighty.
- Schug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I really want to play Ocarina again now and I've beaten it at least 5 times.
- mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -20/+10I still don't think Ocarina should be #1, it wasn't even my favorite for N64.
I'm liking Twilight Princess a lot so far, though.- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17Umm...no. Ocarina is what TP is based on (in terms of mechanics and such). Ocarina is a legendary game.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -12/+5Sorry but I think Goldeneye, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., and Mario 64 were the best titles on the N64. I played the Zelda game some but I wasn't impressed, I rather go back to the Gold NES cartridges than play it.
- Tanath, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Perfect Dark was better than Goldeneye, and Ocarina of Time was an excellent game.
- bufferoverflow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I actually prefer Majora's Mask to Ocarina. And Link to the Past/the original to both. But Twilight Princess so far is amazing, it's like Ocarina and LttP had a sordid affair.
- Tanath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3OK, I owned both Perfect Dark & Goldeneye, and trust me, they did a much better job on Perfect Dark than they did on Goldeneye. The reason it was more popular was the Bond franchise. Basically they took the Goldeneye engine and improved it. Anyone who thumbed me down for saying PD is better doesn't have a clue. Now go ahead and thumb me down for saying so.
- TrainwreckX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Tanath... k
Also, I agree that this game is like Ocarina meets Link to the Past. That's a very positive thing.
- acff, on 10/12/2007, -32/+30i'm 20+ hours into it and it's definitely not the #2 game of all time. it's not even the #2 Zelda game.
- OverloadUT, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18That's how I felt 1 hour in to it. I had major issues with the very beginning and it's complete lack of any sort of tutorial. It was a terrible way to start off the game.
I still think Link to the Past is the greatest Zelda game ever. - uppedbyhiggins, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4why don't you get a key then?
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18way to digg someone down for expressing their opinion. Someone who's spent TWENTY HOURS playing the game.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Good lord, you want everything served on a platter for you don't you? The entire village portion of the game is a tutorial, just not a bash you over the head "for the next ten minutes you're going to learn how to play the game" tutorial.
Now go sit in the corner and try as hard as you can to grow an imagination, mmkay? - ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@acff
How about you provide an explanation or some reasoning? Obviously your opinion is in the minority, but I'm curious anyway... - PuyoDead, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@devindotcom
I always thought opinions were statements along the lines of, "I think that..." "I feel this way..." "In my opinion...". Not, "This is..." "This is not...".
But hey, that's just my opinion on opinions. - PlaguedOne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm nearing the 20 hour point, and I've found that everything has come very naturally to me. The tutorials are there for those who need the game to tell you how to do it, but I love it when a game doesn't cram the tutorial down my throat. I honestly haven't needed them. This isn't difficult stuff to pick up on. And I'm having a blast the whole way through!
- Draracle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3No Tutorial? wtf? did you just speed through all the text without reading it? Every aspect of the control system is explained to you right in the game! What more do you want? I thought the tutorial was very seamlessly blended into the game and got me into the story without going through that annoying "boot camp" tutorial that many games have. If anything, I thought the tutorial was a little too extensive -- but I guess some people need more time to pick of the basics.
As a game, TP is freak'n awsome. From the controls, to the story, to the UI... I love it all.
- OverloadUT, on 10/12/2007, -8/+18That's how I felt 1 hour in to it. I had major issues with the very beginning and it's complete lack of any sort of tutorial. It was a terrible way to start off the game.
- MrMxyzptlk, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6I need this game and a Wii. :(
- mr.gates, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12I'm about 20 hours into it, and Twilight Princess is the best Zelda I have played, and possibly the best game i've played, although I don't think Ocarina of time is the best game ever created its easily in the top five.
- 13tongimp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Great, when do I get it for the Gamecube? After all, I've only been waiting for a few years now.
- MrMxyzptlk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Another few weeks I believe... December 12th.
- Cleanskater, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4Damn, anyone else notice Halo made it but not Halo 2? I'm all for opinions, but I don't think these rankings are very solid in my own humble opinion. :)
- SineNomen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Halo 2 had some severe balancing issues, and it changed a lot of keys things from the original. The first was the better game, easily.
- MrMxyzptlk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It's an average based on numerous press reviews... sites like IGN & 1up.com, magazines like EGM & Game Informer, et cetra. So the media outlets are the ones to blame for Halo 2 not being higher up on the list. :)
- gundamoak, on 10/12/2007, -17/+0@sinenomen I strongly disagree with you. Halo 2 was waaay bombass than Halo. Halo defined the genre for which halo 2 was based on, but Halo 2 surpasses halo in all aspects, and i don't see any balance issues whatsoever. To tell you the truth the first kind of seemed plain. Halo 2 added the spice.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7If halo made it on, I have to take issue with the list...
- ainmosni, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@gundamoak:
What genre did halo define?
To me it seemed like yet another FPS and not even one of the best... maybe being a PC gamer has jaded me but FPS'es bore me to tears these days.
And if you mean console based FPS'es, golden eye defined that and was (for me) a lot more enjoyable than halo ever was.
I know this is all a matter of taste but I never got what was so fun about halo, for me the best console game of the last generation was super smash brothers melee, if only for the hours me and my friends smashed each other and laughed our asses off. - grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1### What genre did halo define?
Console based online multiplayer, if you want to call that a 'genre' that is. It also had some nice ideas in terms of weapon managment (you can only carry two), granates on a separate button and vehicle combat. But yep, for most part is was just a normal FPS with a few good ideas here and there.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14It's funny what hype and good timing can do. It can skyrocket an otherwise basic A-list game to universal acclaim while other more deserving games that might have come about earlier and been less known go otherwise unnoticed.
- Mullinator, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6Opinions my friend, opinions are what makes this game an A+ to many and an A- to you. Your top 10 best games of all time will most certainly differ from mine, doesn't mean Zelda isn't any less deserving of the title.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20That's true, I just don't know if a game should be put to that status so quickly. it needs a "cooldown period" or something.
- mistershawn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1lol, so zelda needs a cold shower before she gets too enthused with her #2 status, is what you're saying?
- Mullinator, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I will laugh very hard if the once the Gamecube Zelda is released it means second and third place will have essentially the same game.
Zelda games getting gold, silver, and bronze would be something. - uppedbyhiggins, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4I agree with Ocarina of Time being number one--it's the only one-player game that continues to captivate a room full of people almost a decade after its release (for me and my friends at least). Maybe ET for atari does the same thing, but in a bad way.
Anyway, It's also the only game that I'll play annually because the story is so great, and the gameplay is so fun. But perhaps I'm just a zelda fanboy...- trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wait until you play Twilight Princess, you'll think about it again and choose TP, because it's really just that good.
- kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -15/+2So biased - ps3 being recalled wii forever!
- posure, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Not a terrible list other than Tekken being in the top 10...I wouldn't give any game in the Tekken series even top 100.
- aweraw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tekken rocks dude... as far as fighting games go, Tekken is the bar against which all other fighters are measured, IMO (closely followed by the Soul Calibur series... both of which are Namco games)
- aweraw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tekken rocks dude... as far as fighting games go, Tekken is the bar against which all other fighters are measured, IMO (closely followed by the Soul Calibur series... both of which are Namco games)
- Wolfr, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Does it actually come out for the Gamecube?
- gameguy43, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yes
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I'm about 15 hours into Zelda in the second temple, my only complaint? Overuse of the lighting effects. Other than that, its a great game.
The Wii-mote is used in an amazing fashion, the story is fantastic, and Midna helps to keep the Twilight (which would usually be depressing and a turn off) somewhat upbeat and helpful.
I can understand the great ratings for the game, its very well done, not rushed, and has already given me some of the most innovative and rememberable gaming experiences of my gaming life (horseback fighting, Wii-mote use, etc). There are puzzles in this game that are truely fresh and innovative and take full use of the Wii-mote that bring something new to the table.
On another note considering this is already a rant, the Wii-mote/nunchuk is incredibly nature and I think I'm starting to wonder how I used to be able to call other controller "natural".
Bravo Nintendo, you've once again saved me from the boring repeitition both on the computer and other consoles. Now just bring me a RTS :P - Gemini25RB, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6I'm not sure how they add games to the list, but it looks awful Nintendo-heavy. Not that those games are bad, but I'm surprised. Especially by Metroid Prime at #4. It was a good game, and very completely done, but I just didn't find it more awesome than Super Mario 64, which I contend is a little low. Tekken 3?!!?!?! Never played it (not that I can distinguish between the tekken games x.x), but the others weren't too fantastic. Did I miss a gem?
- twesterm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Game Rankings has pretty much every reviewed game by the sites in its database. It doesn't do anything to the reviews and only major sites count towards the average (if you look at the individual games, there is the weighted average of just major reviewers and one with all reviews).
You people that think GameRankings.com is Nintendo biased are just idiots and plain simple. There really is no other way to put it. If you weren't so simple, you could take two seconds to read the site and see that it is just a database of *gasp* game rankings. - Blueshrike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Metroid Prime took one of the best 2D games of all time and made it into the best 3D adventure/platformer of all time. It wasn't traditional FPS, and was more exploration, discovery, with a great combat mechanic and unique functional controls. The level design was OOTW.
It deserves #3. My order would perhaps go Super Mario 64 #1, Zelda OoT #2, MP #3, RE IV #4 (yes it is that good). - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gamerankings doesn't have every review ever. They have a select number of online reviews. This is why Twilight Princess only has 20 reviews while Ocarina of Time has 32 reviews and Resident Evil 4 has 100 reviews.
You can't really go by gamerankings for accuracy since they don't compare games on a 1:1 basis. They compare the average of sources they choose to rate with the average of sources they choose to rate.
- SineNomen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I know this is going by editor rankings, but a game this new shouldn't even be considerd yet.
Ocarina was an awesome game, doubly so after you beat it a couple times, gathered all the Pieces of Heart, found all the Skultula hiding places, spent 5+ hours fishing, etc...
The greatest of games are not yet truly appreciated until some time after their release.
Also, why isn't MGS on that list?!- markingtime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6its not as if the later reviews wont count. the ranking will change with the release of further reviews. I've been a member of that site for some time now. I even saw splinter cell for xbox as #2 at one point, but with time the games usually end up where they belong.
- BloodyDischarge, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2I put money on the GameCube version being better since that is the console it was initially being developed for.
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9You have no idea the immersion and awesomeness that the wii-mote brings to the game until you've tried it for an hour or two.
- OutofExile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm gonna agree that I would be shocked if it's better on the Cube, because the Wiimote is awesome.
I don't know if I'd call it immersive but it is very fun.
It's one of the best things the game has going for it. Other than that, it's not one of the better Zelda titles, IMO. So when it loses that on the GC, I think it will be even less exciting.
It's a good game, really. I'm just a bit disappointed. But one thing I'm not disappointed in is the control scheme, so I thought I'd comment on that. - NiX0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I also wouldn't say immersed. I wish this game had originally been written for the Wii. Exact motions of the sword to my hand would be most awesome. On the contrary, the control style does improve gameplay immensely. Moving your hand around instead of your fingers, leaves your finger available for other more important tasks. Not that the gamecube version is going to suck, but the Wii version definitely kicks ass imho.
- Sundownvf111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4wow..... because this game really stands up to those like Pac-Man or Super Mario...
- ralphie81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What about pong??!?? hahaha
- negativenancy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh there you are Grandpa! Just what do you think you are doing roaming about at this hour? You know you really shouldn't be wandering away from your room, I don't really care but mom might get mad.
- sjm20k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I respect their initial happiness with the game but wholeheartedly disagree with them. I dont think either belong in the top ten with games like half life 1 and 2, deus ex, final fantasy 6, chrono trigger, zelda a link to the past, and the mario series around.
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I agree that those are great games and deserve to be on the list but...
When I play a game for the first time, I get a strong feeling if this game is going to be good or not, if i'm going to bother playing it all the way through etc. Zelda:TP has that strong feeling that damn, this is a great game, and I'm only 15 hours into it (I was stuck fishing for nearly an 1.5 hours because I didn't listen : ). Don't knock it until you try it. - sjm20k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3After looking down the list I realise how bad it is. Soul Caliber and Tekken above Half Life 2? That's sure reputable putting 2 party fighting games up there over one of the most groundbreaking pc games of all time...
@ TheG2:
Im sure its great and i cant wait to play it! But to put it and the ocarina of time above all other games is a little much. I will play it for myself and see, but I dont feel as if ocarina should be in the top 5. Just my two cents. - sulthernao, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Perhaps you don't understand how it works? They basically take a compilation of reviews, add the score and rank them in that order.
- ralphie81, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3sjm20k, Half Life 2? Groundbreaking? Great game and all, but how can a sequel for the same console really be all that groundbreaking?
- twesterm, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2@ralphie81
Half-Life 2 was pretty bad, the levels just weren't a lot of fun (how many people actually bothered playing the air boat level?), the levels didn't fit, the story was crap, and they would introduce cool elements never to use them again.
So why was Half-Life 2 rated so high? Because it did A LOT of awesome things. Hammer is a bitch to develop for, but even with the engine being old, you can do some amazing things in it. - gundamoak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ralphie I don't know you tell me:) Zelda is a sequel too, FYI. Just because they don't put a number after it doesn't mean it's not a sequel. It's another entry into the Zelda series, not a new IP.
- ralphie81, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1@ gundamoak, yes but it's on a different console, which means it could more likely be considered "groundbreaking".
- Dcherub, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1what everyone is missing, is that these reviews aren't take from retrospective reviews from older magazines etc - so games like the original mario series, and pacman etc will just never be properly represented.
so yeah, relax all you "where is pong!" people - sjm20k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For one, I consider HL2 groundbreaking because it did 2 things, the first was making the leap into "next gen gaming" - when HL2 came out for the PC there was no game that utilized physics and normal maps like the Source engine did, and it was astounding and immersive. Secondly the HL series has always been about immersion, theres a reason that HL always wins game of the year when they are released and thats because the amount of love, care, and innovation put into these games breathes new life into the FPS genre and inspires countless others to come.
I am completely ignoring the fact that Valve's engines are perhaps the most commonly modded in all of history and they give such unprecedented support to their modding community there is no wonder people are still playing HL1 mods on the internet.
Please realize I am talking about HL2 for the PC and not for the Xbox, in my opinion playing FPS games on a console is generally a completely different experience.
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I agree that those are great games and deserve to be on the list but...
- choopie911, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7How did metroid get up there? It wasnt that good....
- gundamoak, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3umm isn't it too early to be calling it best game of all time (or 2nd, whatever)? I mean....we are talking about "ALL TIME" so labeling it such on the first 2 days is kind of extreme. Besides, the reviews are too inflated if you ask me. It's as if the reviewers minds were all set on Zelda being perfect before the thing came out, even though its well known the thing was designed for the old gamecube. All the reviewers mention the lack of graphics comparable to other systems but they *still* review the thing as if its flawless... Not to mention that if Sony or Microsoft basically re-launched the PS2 and Xbox under a new name (which the Wii is basically not considering the controller), people would complain. I mean wtf. I think after a year when the hype and "newness" of the wii controller run out...the true age and lack of power of the wii will show, especially when those other *big* games launch next fall on the PS3/Xbox 360. People will be comparing what the Wii doesn't have.
/Rant
That being said i wouldn't mind getting a Wii as a gift for free and the only reason i would remotely pick one up it is to try Zelda. (I loved majora's mask, not ocarina though...) Then after I played it the Wii would collect dust.- bnfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2good, i knew that serveral years ago!
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"That being said i wouldn't mind getting a Wii as a gift for free and the only reason i would remotely pick one up it is to try Zelda. (I loved majora's mask, not ocarina though...) Then after I played it the Wii would collect dust."
After playing Wii sports, I think you'd be changing your statement.
- Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6It's isn't that good. Agree with GameSpot's review more.
- SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4i Disagree with their list.
I don;t think Tekken 3 is better than Half Life 2 or Halo.
And I don't think Goldeneye is better than any of the games below it.
Seems like this site has its favorites.- argh44z, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4That site? All game rankings does is store what scores major game publications give to games. And aggregates them.
- scrubking, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Just about every piece of news having to do with the Wii is horribly biased so I would take these reviews with a grain of salt. Right now everyone is swooning over the new controls because they are new and different, but after a couple months, when the hype dies, things will be different.
- argh44z, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Have you tried the wiimote? It is extremely natural. I was very skeptical before I tried it. It's easy to pick up too.
- OutofExile, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Hmm.
I've played 9 hours so far and it's a very good game; I'm enjoying it.
But it's not even close to as good as OOT or LttP, or a myriad of other games on other consoles, such as Soul Calibur, Final Fantasy VII, Goldeneye, Oblivion, Half-Life 2, etc.
So this #2 of all time thing perplexes me.
It's a great game, but it's a bit slow, relies too much on cutscenes, and doesn't have the giddy experience of exploration that was in the better Zelda games.
I kid you not I think Wii Sports is almost as good as Z:TP. It's more fun, at least.- xerus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Final Fantasy VII? ....lmao.
- OutofExile, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4You got a problem with FFVII?
Man.
Well, I guess it goes to show us how subjective this stuff is and how little reviews mean, really. =) - bufferoverflow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8VII isn't as good as the ones that came before it. It just hasn't stood up, all the annoyances in it are positively glaring these days, the load times, unskippable FMV, some of the broken Summons(Knights of the Round x 3! DEATH!). The graphics are horribly dated. It's more fun, for me at least, to read through a walkthrough/story dump than to actually replay it.
VI and IV don't have those problems. Nor does Chrono Trigger. Or many of the other SNES RPG classics(Earthbound, Secret of Mana... etc.).
And on the PS1, Vagrant Story is a better game anyway(Anyone else notice the rank riskbreaker in FFXII? Hah!).
/flamebait - bufferoverflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh yea, and I'm also one of those wierd people that prefers LttP to Ocarina.
Mainly because I find LttP far more enjoyable to replay than Ocarina. Even years later I still run through it once a year or so. Same with the original, and the SNES RPGs I mentioned.
If a game can keep me entertained for 30 hours a year for a decade and a half, it definately gets up there on my all-time greats list. - argh44z, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2FF6 >>>> FF7
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"You got a problem with FFVII?"
Yes. It singlehandedly birthed the term 'Square Fanboy', much to the chagrin to those of us that have been playing the series since its inception. People who were weaned on it and the Gackt-alike emo fest that came afterwards have no idea about the mechanics of a Final Fantasy game, and how they've been steadily ruined over the years until Sakaguchi finally committed career suicide and gave way to someone who knows how to make a good ***** videogame. That game would be Final Fantasy XII.
"FF6 >>>> FF7"
You're going to get buried into the toilet for this by the fanboys, which is unfortunate, because you're absolutely right.
(goes back to playing FFV)
- tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2so much hype behind this game. and its apparently well-deserved.
i kinda want a wii now. but i told myself to wait. but i dont wanna wait. - smellytim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Maybe a couple more 100%s and TP will take the top spot. I am playing it right now, and it is fantastic.I am 20 hours in and only at the 4th dungeon, this game is huge.
- YouRookies, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You rookies, How does Tekken 3 and Soul Calibur not deserve to be in the top 10? Tekken 3 was amazing when it first came out on the PS1. It's one of those games where you had to be there to appreciate it.
1.The graphics was ahead of it's time on a console, just like how you think GoW graphics are great.
2. PERFECT Arcade port with several extras like Beachball mode and two new characters.
3. Theatre Mode with the option to put in your old Tekken 1/2 cd's to watch their endings too.
4. Music and Sounds were perfect.
5. Endless Replay Value with friends.
6.And MOST IMPORTANTLY, the gameplay depth in Tekken 3 grew x10 more than what is was in Tekken 2. They added side throws, side steps, parries, reversals to reversals, juggles ect....ect - kadio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Leisure Suit Larry FTW!
- cmscott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This seems a bit hasty. I think they should wait at least a month or so, or until they can get over the initial excitement of playing the Wii console, and focus on just the game quality instead. If it's truly such a great game, then the Gamecube version should score just as high and prove it's merit of being the second greatest game of all time.
- feaks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3So it's safe to say now that with the Wii you'll be able to play the top 2 best games ever ?
- Thors1982, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5OMG Ocarina of Time is so overrated... i thought it was one of the worst zelda's..... it was way to easy..it was a joke. Mario 64 was a lot better in my opinion
However, I can't wait to get a Wii and Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess :-)- rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wouldn't say it was the worst. I will agree that it was overrated. LTTP ftw.
- NiX0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I believe you are forgetting why Ocarina of Time was, and imho still is, so cool. It brought a whole new entourage of gameplay ideas. It was the first game to introduce the Z-Target. It was the first game to really show what the N64 was capable of. While somewhat redundant to the other LoZ series, OoT's story was told well.
If you didn't like Ocarina of Time, you probably didn't play it when it came out.
- Lavarock, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4This is not news, anyone can spot the ***** here. So I guess these people really like Zelda games? Maybe there's some bias. Nah, this is the number 2 greatest game ever.
- mtrip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The site is just an average of all the reviews from the main sites and magazines. It's math, not bias.
- daxsymbiont, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0i love the zeldas.
but can we all sing along.. laamee tiiitlee... - 1town, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I'm not surprised. Nintendo faithful reviewers are notorious for over-scoring
- TuxedoMax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2A more accurate title would be "Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess is the number 2 most highly reviewed game so far." I believe the top ten based on avg. vote to be more accurate. Thi is mostly because it includes Chrono Trigger and Metal Gear Solid, which make any "Top Games" list considerably more acceptable.
1. Resident Evil 4
2. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
3. GoldenEye 007
4. Super Mario 64
5. Super Mario World
6. Chrono Trigger
7. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
8. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
9. Metal Gear Solid
10. Super Metroid- trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The list from Game Rankings:
1. Ocarina of Time
2. Twilight Princess
3. Soul Caliber
4. Metroid Prime
5. Tekken 3
6. Resident Evil 4
7. Super Mario 64
8. Goldeneye 007
9. Halo: Combat Evolved
10. Half Life 2
Gamespot gave TP an 88%, GameRevolution gave it an 85%-- how can everyone be giving this a score in the 90s and two reviewers give it high 80s? - alternative724, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I still don't understand where people went wrong not listed FF7 as top 10.
Completely revolutionary for the time, which was just around the time of ocarina.
- trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The list from Game Rankings:
- AJ32083, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2what no Tetris? its been out 20+ years and still going strong. no Pac-man? No Contra? This may very well be a great game but to be one of the greatest games it needs staying power which i don't think it will have.
- method, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2System Shock.
Anyone who played the original on the PC knows this game should be on the list.- sjm20k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sytem shock 2 and deus ex as well please!
- manicdvln, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2How can it be the 2nd greatest game of all time and majority of gamers haven't played it yet, and people who have probably haven't finished the game.
I call this hype, nothing more. I am a nintendo fan, but not a blind one. - Bibimbap, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Twilight Princess starts off so bad... I'm in the first stupid town still.. I've stopped a goat, I've flown some chickens, I've chased a cat and got it stuck under a bridge at least five times... I've thrown rocks at (nowhere near) a monkey that was taunting me, I've called a hawk and thrown some ***** at a beehive.
If this weren't a zelda game with promise of more fun, I'd stop playing now ;(- melkore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Get the cradle back from the monkey then get a fishing rod and catch a fish for the cat. You'll then beo n your way to getting a sword.
- neiltc13, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1No Legend of Zelda game deserves to be listed alongside words like "best" and "good".
- SeriouslyButNo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7***** you.
- alternative724, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You are not a rebel, you are an idiot
Go swallow a knife - mikesbaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wow you made a fanboy swear
- mikesbaker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0They put golden eye on the list but didn't include Far Cry? Also Half Life 1 beats the pants off of 2. The brevity of HL 2 was a big disappointment. This my not have started as a Nintendo fan boy site but it certainly has become one.
- joaob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anybody else find it odd that 7 out of the top 10 games are Nintendo games....
that i've never played. - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4There's good games, then there's Zelda games.
- Elfman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Lame.
Looks like a Nintendo fan boy's wet dream list to me. There are so many PC games out there dominate most of these games.
Original Half Life?
Unreal Tournament?
Quake?
Doom?
Sure these games are old but they were revolutionary when they came out. No Nintendo game has made me play it for over 8 hours straight.
Sorry Mario, but you bore me.- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6No PC game has ever made me play for eight hours straight. What's your point?
Oh, right. You don't have a point. You have an *opinion*. - Elfman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3My point is that how can these be the best games of all time when I have never even owned a Nintendo system in my life. I have played all of the games on the list but none of them ever made me say "Wow!"
the Wii interests me a great deal and will more than likely give it a try, but I am just so sick of these people that think Nintendo is the end all of gaming.
And don't call me a Nintendo hater either. My favorite arcade game of all time? Donkey Kong made by everyone's favorite game company from Japan. - engrishGamer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Cry me a river. You act like only Nintendo review sites are listed. Every credible game site is listed, those games are the top because the majority of reviewers think they're the top games. You've never owned a Nintendo system, I don't think you've ever even played a Nintendo game for a substantial amount of time so you can't really have an opinion on this
- cwilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Looks like a Nintendo fan boy's wet dream list to me."
God, i wish the term "fan boy" would just go away.
For what it's worth, all of the series you listed above are great and I'd put most of them on my top 10. - Rockarollr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@Elfman
"My point is that how can these be the best games of all time when I have never even owned a Nintendo system in my life."
So YOU have to have owned these games for them to qualify as the best games of all time?
While you ARE entitled to your own *opinion*, I think you need to wake up and realize that the world doesn't revolve around you, bud. - alternative724, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0your also an idiot.
its your fault that you have never played them, obviously they are good because thousands, nay millions of people around the world love them.
Nobody cares about your opinion beyond trying to prove that your opinion is crap.
For everyones sake, go strangle yourself with your mouse. - Elfman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@alternative724
So much rage. Your parents must be proud.
You obviously did not read my post:
"I have played all of the games on the list but none of them ever made me say "Wow!""
So I have played all the Zelda's and Marios. But up until the Wii, I have had no reason to own a Nintendo system. - mikesbaker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the term fanboy would go away if anytime anyone posts anything critical to nintendo it wasn't met with "***** you ass hole nintentdo is god" and dugg down. I don't know how many well reasoned comments I've seen dugg down just because the fanboys have no response aside from "I'm always right that Nintendo is the greatest and ***** anyone else who says other wise."
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6No PC game has ever made me play for eight hours straight. What's your point?
- baugles, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Haha, did anyone else get horribly stuck in the jail cell and the part getting into the house to get the sword?
Those parts seemed very vague to me.
Well, sorta. I saw the hole in the jail cell and dashed the box, but it didn't break. Later found out you had to ATTACK it. Woo. Big diff :P
The digging part, I swore I dug up that entire village. Just so happened to miss ONE corner. Bah. - Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm sorry, but you can't say a game is one of the greatest of all time within a week of it's release... these things take time.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gamerankings isn't scientific in any way. It's not even particularly accurate. For instance, they will take reviews from some websites but not all, they will take reviews from websites that they grade a quality of 2 stars but ignore reviews from websites that they grade a quality of 5 stars, thereby throwing out what they consider a better review for a worse review.
It gets more complicated when you try to figure out how they accept some website reviews. For instance, GamerDad gets to review on one game but not another, but who the Hell is GamerDad anyway?
The point being, the system is completely arbitrary and I'm trying to figure out what they're using as a measure of accuracy at all, if anything.
The only really accurate measure for TP's real stance is to take its 20 reviews and measure it against 20 reviews from the same sources from the other games on the list to get an accurate ranking.- WildKard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I believe they actually have a "weighting" system that compares reviews from the same sources to determine what the high+low+averages are... I believe a lot of the reviews, especially smaller sites, are added manually.
As an alternative, Mobygames.com (my own site) has started MobyRank a few months ago which is similar... being a new feature in a user-contributed product... it isn't the same size as gamerankings... and probably suffers from many of the same flaws... but hey, we try.
