- beckerist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+94He gets on TV for 3 reasons:
1) He's articulate and knows how to SOUND intelligent. (Big Words != intelligence)
2) He's cheap (or free. hell, to him it's free advertising!)
3) (Unfortunately) The majority of society STILL considers video games as "new media." It's easy to convince ignorant people of wrong "facts" in subjects they know nothing about. - ZWarren69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+84JT an "expert" on school shootings? I got a laugh out of that!
- woodwater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52This guy has to be stopped.
Anyone that thinks someone can train on Doom needs to be stopped from appearing on CNN. - yeshuu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+51if doom trains me to be a killer, the pheonix wright: ace attorney trained him to be a lawyer, this guy is retarded, and he has actually allowed his 14 YEAR OLD SON to purchase an M rated game once in the past, so why isnt litttle thompson junior killing people?
- Trickmil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+48The really sad part is how Jack kept bringing it back to video games. The commentator kept trying to ask good questions, but Jack insisted on bringing up video game examples. When will the world realize that it's the people, not the games who are to blame?
- ScoobyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+45What's really mind boggling is that he made these comments when the identity of the killer wasn't even known. I mean, d'uh.
- Khabi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27Ah, JT propeganda at its finest.
According to our friend here, I should be a serial murder. I grew up watching Horror Movies from Freddy to just about anything made by Takashi Miike (look him up if you don't know what I'm talking about), listening to 'devil music', and of course playing video games. Those very same videogames that 'trained' all of those people to kill. Yes, in high-school I was even that 'loner kid' that didn't talk much. Surprisingly, I never shot up my school, never pointed a weapon at someone, hell I wouldn't even say I've been in any real fights.
Maybe I'm the exception, but I know of so many people just like me that wouldn't believe that in the slightest. The truth here is, mentally unstable people do rash things. It *could* be parenting problems, it *could* be a chemical imbalance, it *could* be that the guy is just ***** wacko.
Jack's reasoning here is like saying that one day I ran someone over. Since I have a license, that must mean I've been praticing for this since I was 16. Completely outrageous.
I am a stable individual that has been playing games for 20+ years. And to Jack I say, you sir are an idiot. - Madhatter73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Mentally unstable people may find pleasure in violent games but they are violent people before the TV tells them to be.
No one blamed the dog for Son of Sam's killings. No one should blame a video game for the same reason. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Why does jack Thompson keep on blaming Doom? Who the ***** plays Doom anymore?
Welcome to 10 years go. - TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24If you want Jack Thompson to go away, stop talking about Jack Thompson.
If I am the subject of robust discussions on the net by people who object to my opinions about [x], a side effect is that I become known (and easily Google-able) as an expert in [x]. Then mindless producers and magazing editors will start calling me for quotes and sound bites. Pretty soon I'm making bank as an expert witness for hire. Does no one understand how this works? - R22W13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Excellent work. I'm glad someone like Brian took the time to refute these claims with actual facts. Kudos to Kotaku once again.
- kmanb182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20How the ***** can you be trained to kill 32 people? Instead of shutting his ***** mouth at a time like this. He uses this as a soap box. Pathetic!
- neverender, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17He left out Charles Whitman. Oh yeah, thats right, when Charles Whitman killed 15 of his fellow students at University of Texas at Austin, video games did not even exist. Thompson keeps point the finger the wrong way. What a douchebag.
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I just wrote a letter to Fox News about this, I find that their use of Jack Thompson as an "Expert" is reprehensible and speculative.
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18filthy farking ambulance chaser, that's all JT is.
- IamTheProfessor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You're no exception, the majority of kids don't shoot people. That is a fact.
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14I believe military institutions around the world offer an extensive 8-week course.
- asurroca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11In short, yes.
- j01101010, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11forget about "who plays doom anymore?" My question is, who thinks, "Wow, this 'Doom' game is immersive it's like I'm really doing these things"?
- IamTheProfessor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10This clown wants to blame video games?! Why doesn't he blame the news? In a 60 minute news segment, how much of that is spent on tragic events, murders, rapes, etc?
I play Gears of War, therefore, I am a murderer in the making.
I play Madden 2007, therefore, I am an athlete in the making.
You can't make that correlation without sounding like a *****! - OutrightLie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I wish I was able to read the whole article. I only got about half way through before this ***** meter I have been beta testing closed the browser for me.
- Kratisto, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15FOX News: When you have to spread *****, there's no substitute.
- DocBoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9After I play a few rounds of bejewled i feel like slaugherting 30 some people.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I cannot BELIEVE the sheer amount of BS he was able to squeeze into that short segment. If anything he's an expert of falsehood.
- star00scream, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Although most of the digg community knows this guy is a total jackass, anybody who isn't aware needs to know that this is further proof of what an ambulance chasing, media whoring windbag this guy is. Any tragedy that occurs with guns and a shooter under the age of 40, this guy sees it as an opportunity to spew his "murder simulator "rhetoric, and Fox, being the reputable source for scare mongering-glady assists him with airtime.
- TheLoneWolf071, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This man is a nut job and he needs to be disbarred. While VG may make you think about violence, it has been shown that it actually has attributed to the decreasing crime rates in many cities. He just found an exploitable medium and has chosen to pimp it out as much as possible.
- SigmaDraconis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7From this point on, this exact article and the facts within are to be brought up every time Jack Thompson makes an effort to spew his severely jilted agenda from his ass.
- ghostlywind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Is it just me or does Jack Thompson seem like he becomes a even bigger douche every time he talks.
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Then stop posting anything about him, even negative articles like this one.
- PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@TroubleInMind
So then should we start talking about how Jack Thompson is an expert in waste treatment plants and gall bladder surgery? - woodychris, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Two people that video games no longer need Uwe Boll and Jack Thompson. I mean come on, I could pick anything out of the air and blame a school shooting on it.
1. The gel that the guy used in his hair left his hair feeling greasy, so he took out his frustrations on his classmates.
2. His boxers were riding too far up his ass, so he got revenge.
3. His Wheaties go soggy too quick in his milk, so he got payback.
See, Jack, I can do it too. Maybe I need to go on Fox News the next time a school shooting occurs. Society is downright ignorant nowadays. Why can't the person just be responsible for his own actions? Why is society so obsessed with this "Point the Finger" view? I liked what Chris Rock had to say about the Columbine shooting and HarrisKlebold, "What happened to crazy?" They have already released information that this kid was referred to the school psychiatrist by one of his english teachers because his writings were very dark and foreboding. I think the guy just snapped. Bottom line, End of Story. Is gun control going to prevent this? No. Is Video Game Censoring going to prevent this? No. Will therapy prevent this? Yes, if they could have identified that he needed it sooner. - DocBoss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6you misspelled that its "*****".
- MeltedGeneral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You play a on a deathmatch server and thats how you train but, you have to wait for people to respawn and they're carrying weapons also :D
JT wishes they were true, like the mystical channel FOX :O - NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thats a hideous atrocity to call him an "expert" on anything, let alone school shootings... saying that is just an excuse not to introduce him as a fear mongering ***** with an agenda against videogames.
- techwrekfix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Does this guy sit around all day waiting for a shooting? Does he wake up in the morning and say "I hope there's a school shooting."?
- IamTheProfessor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No kidding necessary. By JT logic, you are absolutely correct. And because you wrote a response to a comment, you must be a Commentator or Author. You can't argue it, that is just the facts.
- offspring06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Most people who play video games do not go on shooting rampages so the problem must be with certain individuals.
- Inverno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If playing video games as a child influenced behavior we would have seen a lot of kids running around in the dark, eating pills, and listening to annoying repetitive electronic music.
- woodychris, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@iamtheprofessor
You would only be a murderer you lived on planet Sera, and the locusts had taken over your world. As far as being an athlete, who know? Maybe. But, it's a forgone conclusion that you are a Murdering Athlete according to Jack Thompson logic. Just accept it as fact. j/k - IamTheProfessor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He's not getting "PR." He's getting shat on. The article ***** on him. If you agree that JT is a ***** goblin, then digg the story. If you think JT is Jesus Reincarnate, then digg down.
- IamTheProfessor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They have ratings on video games now JT!. I have 22 year old friends getting carded when they buy "M" games. But that doesn't stop the parents from buying the game for their 8 year old son. Does this toolshed want video games removed from the market all together? *****, in that case we should no longer make any movies but Care Bear cartoons.
- Bossman1086, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"But he had Violent Games on his Cell Phone!"
- Shriker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I play violent video games. I'm also in college. I must be a cold-hearted trained killer. Guess I should be locked up now.
WHY does this guy still make the news? - MikeD606, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The thing is "Most" is not the right word. It is more like "Practically none." Even if you could connect every school shooting and cross reference it with every violent video game player the match would be so low, even a statistician would ignore it.
- gotforce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3LOL tell him about JFK reloaded, that is a must, that game is legendary :P
- PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If video games are to blame, why aren't more people running through the woods with swords killing murlocs, complaining about Chinese farmers, and looking for people with yellow question marks above their heads?
- alpha_male76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pundants!!
Whats worse, the pundants that spout crap or the Media outlets that seek out these people and pay them.
Or is it worse that media outlets let them rant unchallanged in most regards.
sorry, it just makes me sad. Walter Cronkite would never allow this to happen.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Next think you know they are going to blame 9/11 on video games....oh wait...they already did that...Microsoft Simulator, because before video games nobody ever killed anyone...
- KidVicious, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"If you want Jack Thompson to go away, stop talking about Jack Thompson."
Don't watch the... Don't watch the... Monsters.....
The Simpsons is full of valuable life lessons. - tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@pd
I didn't get all those references.
@inverno
I've seen that on a T-shirt. -
