Kotaku bans commenter who points out it's jumped the shark
kotaku.com — Kotaku used to be the best gaming blog going but these days, the site is full of non game posts. Have a little fun at their expense and point this out and you'll be banned. Stay in line Kotaku Kids!

- Nobi-Wan, on 05/02/2008, -23/+276One major problem with Kotaku is the increasing amount of commentary on the bloggers personal lives. This is a prime example. One guy posts a useless two sentence thing about how he has to choose between kinds of noodles?? I find myself steering away from this website more and more. Why not do some research on gaming related issues like:
Why does a game like Iron-Man cost the same as GTA IV at launch?
What's the deal with paying for certain DLC when it's basically just a "key" you're paying for that will unlock content already on the disc?
Why is Sony spending months and months on an incredibly complicated PS3 feature like Home when they've yet to even implement an in-game XMB?- xBBx, on 05/02/2008, -4/+54To add a little bit to what you said, I think the problem is the crew at Kotaku spend so much time on the site, they believe any little thing they go through is interesting. They need to get their own personal blogs for that kind of stuff. The site is supposed to be about games (and to a certain extent, Japanese culture).
- jrbrewin, on 05/02/2008, -22/+4that's really funny, coming from a digg user. lets be fair, the average digg user (not specially you xBBx, or even me) would dry hump any slight bit of news about kevin rose.
kotaku's apparent downfall (from one of, if not THE most popular gaming blog) will be because the rampant fanboys salivating at blog authors like they are the new breed of rockstar. which of course, they're not.- bCabulon, on 05/02/2008, -1/+16Who is Kevin Rose? (I honestly don't know)
- Trykt, on 05/02/2008, -1/+12That's against Digg rules, you'll be banned shortly.
- bitterbug, on 05/02/2008, -1/+8Why would the average Digg user give a damn about what Kevin Rose is doing?
I don't care in the slightest what Facebook guy does, or Mark Shuttleworth (Ubuntu), or Bill Gates.
Same as I don't read anything about Angelina, Britney, Paris, etc.
So really, why do I care what the guy that runs Digg does when he's not running the site?
- bCabulon, on 05/02/2008, -1/+16Who is Kevin Rose? (I honestly don't know)

- mywhitenoise, on 05/02/2008, -12/+49I ***** hate Brian Ashcroft!
- Zamfir, on 05/02/2008, -6/+9Yea I saw on tv the other day, and other than the fact he had nothing interesting to say, I couldn't stop starring at his hideous mullet. Brian, it's 2008 buddy.
- Nobi-Wan, on 05/02/2008, -1/+10That's Brian Crecente.
- PaulOwen, on 05/02/2008, -7/+2Rogz's Friends
Rogz has no friends.
Says it all I'm afraid.- anstice85, on 05/02/2008, -2/+5Because someone doesn't have friends on a gaming website, he must have no friends offline either? This means nothing.
- PaulOwen, on 05/02/2008, -4/+1In the context of being banned, I'm sorry to say that yes, it does mean something. He was not contributing to the site, just whingeing that the site didn't have the stories *he* wanted, as if his browser was forced to go there all the time and he was then forced to moan all the time there. While having no friends on the site.
Stop and think about it.
- DeucesWild, on 05/02/2008, -2/+7But did you know he lives in Japan?? /sarcasm
- strictnein, on 05/02/2008, -2/+3I made a post chiding him for that once, because he brought it up for absolutely no reason at all, and then continued with a very on topic post.
The next day I was banned. Oh well, I needed help cutting out some of the blogs I visit on a daily basis.
What an f'en loser.- strictnein, on 05/02/2008, -3/+4On slightly further review, my post was a little obnoxious, but ban worthy? In an article on magazine covers, Ashcraft again decided that he had to mention that he lives in Japan. Anyways, you make the call:
The beginning of his post: "Wow. Living in Japan, I didn't know that US game magazine covers actually were so blatantly for sale. "
My post:
"Holy *****! You live in Japan? We haven't heard that a thousand times already!
These aren't magazine covers that are for sale, they're on top of the covers. You can easily remove them. "

- mywhitenoise, on 05/02/2008, -3/+7Okay, I just noticed I was banned from making comments on Kotaku. Maybe they read my comment here, or thought my comment of "Penny Arcade sucks" was ban worthy. ***** suckers.
- paranoiabacon, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3dugg for internet angst

- Nobi-Wan, on 05/02/2008, -7/+41I agree. I refuse to start a Twitter account or join Myspace exactly because of this kind of *****. Their random, useless, non-gaming interjections on their website kinda remind me of this:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2008/20080423.j ...- Books, on 05/02/2008, -2/+4I lol'd at work because of that.
- BearinG, on 05/05/2008, -0/+1Yeah I read that like 25% of Canada are active facebook users.. I still don't have a facebook account.. And I work in IT..
I just avoid it on purpose now
- lacronicus, on 05/02/2008, -14/+121: It's not as though some "board of video game prices" sits down and says the quality of the two games are the same. Developers know that 60 dollars is the standard; they won't charge less for bad games because that defeats the purpose of making a bad game (quick cash), and high-end developers can't charge more than the stardard for fear of backlash (people were pissed off enough from the "next-gen" tax, charging even more wouldn't go over well.)
2: On PC, user created mods crush most attempts at bad DLC; things like maps, weapons, and other small things simply aren't things people will pay for when the user-created content is not only as good, but more plentiful. This is slowly becoming the same situation for the PS3, why pay for official maps when there are free user-created maps that are just as good? On the 360, however, gamers are completely at the mercy of MS, which offers no free content. In short, cheaply produced DLC isn't as common as you might think, but when it does happen, it's just them saying "Because we can, and there's nothing you can do to stop us." Just buy the game based on what you actually get, and not what you think you should have gotten.
3: The Sony development "force" doesn't consist of just one team, and as such, they can work on more than one project at a time. Just as importantly, taking developers away from HOME development won't make the in-game XMB come any faster; there comes a point when adding more programmers doesn't make a project go any faster, so why have developers work on something they can't actually help with when you could have them work on a project that does need their help?
Maybe I'm missing something here, but that didn't take a blog article to figure out.- Dochtuir, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2I'd love to pay only 60 dollars for games. Here, new games typically range from 55Euro - 70Euro (84 Dollars - 107 Dollars)
- Altanar, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4That really sucks. =( I hate paying $60 for a game (in fact, I rarely do--used and old games, ftw); I can't imagine paying $84-107.
- Trykt, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2In the case of Iron Man, it's quite fishy that the next gen systems get it for 60 bux, but the ps2 and pc versions are only 30. The ps2 version may be significantly different and the graphics obviously will be worse, both due to technical limitations, but there's no real explanation for why the PC version is 30 dollars cheaper.
Even assuming increased licensing costs for working on next gen systems (the alleged cause of the jump from 50 dollars being the standard for new games to 60 these days) that doesn't appear to make sense.- Altanar, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2Eh, they'll drop prices soon enough. It's not like I imagine too many people running out and getting the Iron Man game right away, anyway.
- Scrappy1850, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1LOST: via domus was 30 for pc and 60 for the consoles also. you get better value for PC games. more mods and user created content. plus even the best PC games debut at 50
- chaosium, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1"there's no real explanation for why the PC version is 30 dollars cheaper."
Next Gens do on average have longer development times.

- syl1985, on 05/02/2008, -10/+3Ummmm Soba or Udon is a difficult question though - I prefer Soba, but I fear I am in the minority.

- thespeedytater, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4You took all of that from the CAG cast.
- fluidfoundation, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1I see what you did there.
- Nobi-Wan, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4Yeah I did get them from the CAGcast but it doesn't take away from the fact that they're all valid questions that gamers have been asking for months, if not years. The CAGcast didn't invent those questions... they just happened to bring them up again last week. The point is still valid when these self proclaimed "video game journalists" are talking about stupid noodles or kids doorbell ditching their apartments.
I really want a video game site that will ask developers HARD questions. It would be a hell of a lot more interesting and I'd probably actually care if they wanted to go off on a tangent every once in a blue moon and not just on a slow news day.
- pontiac, on 05/02/2008, -2/+2"Give me the Banhammer, I shall wield it as if I were playing" -Rogz Irony?
- Rogan, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1Actually, I was being ironic at the time.
- Qumahlin, on 05/02/2008, -2/+1the real question is why is this a story? Kotaku is free to ban what they want, you criticize the site and don't like it, expect to be banned, or better yet, just stop visiting.
- xBBx, on 05/02/2008, -4/+54To add a little bit to what you said, I think the problem is the crew at Kotaku spend so much time on the site, they believe any little thing they go through is interesting. They need to get their own personal blogs for that kind of stuff. The site is supposed to be about games (and to a certain extent, Japanese culture).

- Klarth, on 05/02/2008, -3/+11Ho-taku.
- chillypacman, on 05/02/2008, -2/+4have fun with the metaphors while they last, chances are diggers won't even remember about this past the end of the week.
Reminds me of all the crap that went on with gamespot, you would think it was over for C|Net, gamefaqs and the damn bought and paid for site... http://nerdsandgeeks.cn/blog/?p=58
- chocobomog, on 05/02/2008, -30/+175Are you kidding me? This has been their "shtick" for a long time. When each blogger's shift ends they place a post that links to all the posts that went up during their shift ("What you missed..."). They post pointless banter between to each other, but the true reason is to remind readers what has game posts were posted Kotaku in the last 8 hours (and daily "table of contents", if you will).
If you don't like the post, ignore and go to the next post. The game posts are still there, and Kotaku didn't "jump the shark" because they've done this since the beginning. Personally, I think this is one of the few things that gives Kotaku "personality" and makes it stand out.
Also, they are very strict with comments and ban often and don't hide the fact (Ban Hammer Monday is a regular occurrence). If you don't like it, say something meaningful (as per their rules) or don't comment at all. Again, this is the type of thing that differentiates Kotaku from other sites. Its their shtick and it hasn't "suddenly" changed.- roosterjm2k2, on 05/02/2008, -13/+27Agreed...
And look at the guys previous comments...hes a troll...and was dealt with accordingly. Posting a non-useful comment. and being a wise-ass to boot...troll garbage...- teh_chris, on 05/02/2008, -4/+1also agreed

- teh_chris, on 05/02/2008, -4/+1also agreed
- imacbook, on 05/02/2008, -12/+5Yeah, but if people want to see older news, they should just go to the older posts. There is no need for a post containing links to posts on the same damn website.
- roosterjm2k2, on 05/02/2008, -3/+5there is need when the owner/developer/creator/writer see fit. Its not your place to tell them otherwise.
And frankly, its handy to see the top posts of the last few hours, keeps from making you scroll back 3 pages to see what you've missed... - Qumahlin, on 05/02/2008, -1/+1"There is no need for a post containing links to posts on the same damn website." clearly you don't browse many gawker media sites. One days worth of updates can encompass MANY pages. So do I as a user want to sort through pages of things, or be able to easily browse the headlines I may have missed...it's really a non issue except to whiners...like the guy who got banned
- roosterjm2k2, on 05/02/2008, -3/+5there is need when the owner/developer/creator/writer see fit. Its not your place to tell them otherwise.
- punkcat, on 05/02/2008, -12/+14i like how you try to turn it into the readers fault for going to a gaming site and seeing pointless crap.in essence "keep clicking till you find something you like, and shut up"
yeah thats what i want in a site.- roosterjm2k2, on 05/02/2008, -4/+16Then don't got to that site. Insulting them does nothing. It's the power you have as a reader. I dont like the NYT editors...so I dont buy the NYT anymore... see how that works?
- XenophobicAlien, on 05/02/2008, -8/+3Rogz has no friends.
- mpdid, on 05/02/2008, -11/+7I enjoy Kotaku, this is just the 'they're mainstream so their not cool any more crowd' reacting.
- d3faultnet, on 05/02/2008, -4/+9you got the "they're" right the first time but then you ***** it up on the second.
Also: *****.- Issius, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2I don't really know why I dugg you up. But I did. Though you should know.
- d3faultnet, on 05/02/2008, -4/+9you got the "they're" right the first time but then you ***** it up on the second.
- Books, on 05/02/2008, -7/+3Ya, Night Notes are their messages to each other at the end of their writing day, so [Rogz] go ***** a goat.
- jameskong15, on 05/02/2008, -4/+14Funny how you said to "say something meaningful (as per their rules)" yet you just got done talking about and defending the people who post "pointless banter." Looks like you have two sets of standards. One that licks the nutsack of people who run the site allowing them to post "pointless banter" and another which bitches at people expecting them to "say something meaningful."
- NotOptium, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4Oh no you di'int!
- Qumahlin, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2Um yes...do you not understand that the site owner doesn't have to obey rules he sets for the site users? Do you think the owner of the company you work for is bound to the same rules you are?
- jameskong15, on 05/25/2008, -0/+1Well, if the site owner doesn't have to obey the rules put forward maybe we shall allow police to randomly rob people because thy don't have to obey the laws that they deal out. Oh wait, that doesn't make any ***** sense, much like your comment.
- Nobi-Wan, on 05/02/2008, -5/+5I love how hypocritical they are. They'll ban a reader of the website for posting a useless comment, yet they'll come right back and write about noodles, kids doorbell ditching their house, or what color the envelope was that a letter from their mom sent them. Way to set an example.
- Qumahlin, on 05/02/2008, -2/+2just because your mom or dad curses, does that automatically allow you to curse if you are a kid?
- MemeWarrior, on 05/02/2008, -3/+4You're right, Kotaku didn't jump the shark because of this. They jumped the shark because like most Gawker blogs their bloggers are a bunch of arrogant, juvenile hacks.
- roosterjm2k2, on 05/02/2008, -13/+27Agreed...
- mattyice11, on 05/02/2008, -12/+191The phrase "jump the shark" jumped the shark a long time ago.
- MrHate, on 05/02/2008, -7/+13Absolutely. It's meant to denote a massive decline in quality that can be pinpointed to one single event. These days people just use it to denote something that "isn't as good anymore."
- ElAssoWipo, on 05/02/2008, -9/+19No, it means they ran out of ideas.
It's from when the Fonz jumped a shark.- d3faultnet, on 05/02/2008, -3/+8fukken awesome.
young person here, heard that phrase millions of times. i learned something valuable today :-). this is why i go to digg.
- d3faultnet, on 05/02/2008, -3/+8fukken awesome.
- ElAssoWipo, on 05/02/2008, -4/+13lol don't believe me?
Here's the Fonz jumping the shark:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpraJYnbVtE - aladrin, on 05/02/2008, -0/+20It does refer to Fonz jumping the shark, but it was that single scene that made everyone say 'Hey! This is too far!' 'Jumping the shark' has to refer to a single event that makes everyone realize how far something has declined.
- Nobi-Wan, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2Like ElAssoWipo said, it's basically because they ran out of ideas. It's just poor writing when they're using filler crap.
- ElAssoWipo, on 05/02/2008, -9/+19No, it means they ran out of ideas.
- daizaru, on 05/02/2008, -9/+2I'd digg you but you're digg count is 42 and it seems appropriate.

- SpeedyG, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3This post gets dugg down? Seriously? Does NOBODY know the origin of jump the shark?
- dreesemonkey, on 05/02/2008, -8/+9But but you're cool on the internet if you use "jump the shark" or "darwin award" or "tin foil hats" or "facepalm" or "xxxxx overlords". Ho ho HO we're all being such witty underground culture comedians!
I'm such a humor snob I consider something dead after I hear it a few times, shelf-life of maybe a week or so. Then the barrage of "I'm cool too"s come along and play it out for the next months or entire year. I've just got rick-rolled! Look at me being up on my internet culture, aren't I whacky and on the cutting edge?- Rendonsmug, on 05/02/2008, -2/+3facepalm.png

- withears, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4I was riding a jet ski one time and actually DID jump a shark.
It angers me when people use this phrase without giving me proper credit. - incredibilistic, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2I'm sure both Ron Howard and Henry Winkler want this phrase to go away. Unless they find a way to make money from it. Ron doesn't need the extra cheese but the last good movie Henry was in was The Waterboy and he was a complete wuss for most of the film.
- me32, on 05/02/2008, -0/+0Are you kidding, they get paid 5 cents every time this phrase is used! How do you think Opie and the Fonz pay for food?
- Rendonsmug, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1Fonz was an executive producer on Stargate SG-1. Fathom that.
- withears, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1I watch that show on the Stargate Channel all the time - every night! All Stargate, all day, every day.

- NanoHelix, on 05/02/2008, -15/+38The only Gawker Media blogs that have any integrity are Consumerist and Lifehacker.
- skrizzy, on 05/02/2008, -1/+49Actually Consumerist is kinda losing it as they tell increasingly one sided stories with misleading titles.
- seansmith, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4And don't bother creating an account to call them out on it either. They'll deny your commenting status and toss your comment into the ether. Oh well.
- yohnstoppable, on 05/02/2008, -0/+7Agree on consumerist. A terrible site that posts misleading stories, outright lies, and pure sensationalism. Nothing posted on there is to be trusted
- ADIDAS247, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2Yeah, but it is a good outlet for when something does go wrong and you do sometimes see happy ending because of them
- evillawngnome, on 05/02/2008, -10/+2Gizmodo is alright - they stay on task and usually have a couple stories hit the front page of digg every week.

- InfamousAtheist, on 05/02/2008, -1/+14Lifehacker at least has *some* original content.

- psychotron, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1Deadspin is the best Gawker Media site simply because it's well written and it's not about a serious subject at all. Consumerist used to be so good but now the actual good stories are few and far between. I am convinced they purposely post the sensationalist stories/titles just to get everyone all riled up and posting. It's also annoying that every single damn story is commented by the same damn user all the time.
- dmobley, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2you mean Pornsumerist?
They're just as shady as all the rest of the "we pay by the comment" Gawker blogs.
Consumerist puts up scary titles left and right for pretty boring and bland articles hoping that someone will stop and read. They harp on ENDLESSLY about any story they can even slightly tie into porn, and advocate that people sue and complain rather than watch after their own ass when they do things. The whole "OMG GeekSquad kids steal your homemade porn!!!!!!!" articles that went ON AND ON when we really REALLY already got it the first time were just too much. Instead of advocating that you actually have at least a minor amount of security on your home porn collection, they just want to get people fired from their jobs and make their work a hostile environment. It's nothing but yellow journalism if you can even call it journalism in the first place which for the most part it isn't. It's a horrible blog, in a horrible network of blogs that prey on the lowest common denominator of web users. blaaaaaah. - sovietninja, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3What about Fleshbot???
- skrizzy, on 05/02/2008, -1/+49Actually Consumerist is kinda losing it as they tell increasingly one sided stories with misleading titles.

The irony's on you.
- Elliuotatar, on 05/02/2008, -27/+17I'm gonna have to agree with the ban.
"Oh how gaming related. Not." is not a polite way of expressing your disdain for the content the blog writer chooses to place in his blog.
When you're reading someone else's blog, you're a stranger in their house. Suggesting casually that magenta is a rather loud color for a house may be acceptable if phrased in a polite manner. Blurting out "Oh my god, your house is PINK?!" is impolite, and may lead to your not being invited back.- dyranios2, on 05/02/2008, -15/+10stfu

- TheFoo, on 05/02/2008, -12/+4I have to agree too. Practically every post he had was complaining about something and Kotaku has a reputation for banning commenters that do not really add anything to the discussion.
- DD00, on 05/02/2008, -1/+9Actually that's not true. In my house you are a guest. On Kotaku you are a customer. If you were paying to be at my house the rules would probably be lighter. Sure you aren't directly paying Kotaku to read their content, but that is how they generate their revenue. To threaten, alienate and ban your customers is the dumbest practice ever invented. Especially the way they do it, like 9th grade AV geeks.

- Qumahlin, on 05/02/2008, -3/+3Because magazine and other companies in general need to learn the lesson that paying for exclusive content does nothing but piss customers off and assure that said content will be leaked and ripped? - pbwill, on 05/02/2008, -10/+2His comments are rather funny, but saying that Kotaku has jumped the shark is way over stated. As a blogger myself, looking at what Leigh Alexander and Mark Wilson alone are doing is a complete slap in the face. Instead of giving this so much attention why not give great writing all of the attention, or is that the tabloid like world we live in is indeed taking over as everything seems to not be any good for anyone without controversy.

- chantron, on 05/02/2008, -6/+6Destructoid has got to be the most juvenile videogame blog on the internet. It's ***** retarded.
Kotaku isn't just about news, its about gaming CULTURE. If you tools can't figure out how to filter the ***** you don't want to read, then theres no helping you. Oh and lets not even forget that just in the past two days there were two very interesting and original pieces to be published. One was about western games in japan, the other was about the people living in real ghetto's and their take on the whole GTAIV thing. God forbid a blog provide some stories beyond the quick blurbs rehashing press releases that make up 95% of the typical gaming blog's content.- seneyr, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4If Destructoid is juvenille, then Kotaku is pre-natal. What's with Kotaku having to rely on NSFW crap to draw page views lately? At least Destructoid does interesting coverage and such, even if there's a goofy bend to it.
- Sirocco, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3Clearly you don't understand what CULTURE means. It goes way beyond bitching about your daily lives, tattoos, cakes, and lines outside a store.

"Hey, I wonder what earthshaking news is on Digg today."
Maybe I should have stayed focused on my cereal. It would have been more productive.- mywhitenoise, on 05/02/2008, -1/+3Why are people digging him down? It's a satire on the average Kotaku article.
- ZeRux, on 05/02/2008, -8/+6James Spaza got banned from digg twice even though (as far-righted as his comments are) he never seemed to violate digg's rules, but that apparently didn't upset digg community enough to reach the front page.
- radink360, on 05/02/2008, -5/+35Basically the rule of Kotaku is kiss the writer's asses or get banned. They are all a bunch of nintendo fanboy ***** who think they are god's gift to gaming.
- DD00, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6Watching commenters go off about fanboys on Kotaku is far too ironic. They don't seem to realize fanboys can exist in other areas, like they are of Kotaku. - theragu40, on 05/02/2008, -12/+3Last time I checked, there were no official internet blog rules that websites have to live by. If Kotaku chooses to ban someone, then big whup. You'll be less stressed out by it when you take a step back and not get overly involved in the community of a site. - ImpactedColon, on 05/02/2008, -2/+7Most blogs could do without 95% of the comments made on their posts. If you need proof, actually read all of the comments on any one Digg article. You'll lose your will to live.
- somnambulistz, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3i actually enjoy reading everyone's comments, especially if i don't understand the subject matter. like a lot of people are saying, "what's the big deal if this guy got banned" but I see the other side that it IS a big deal because he got banned for commenting on Kotaku's unrelated gaming news on a gaming website. But yeah, I love to read digg comments :D
- bmc31190, on 05/02/2008, -1/+6Now instead of you never going back to the site again and them losing your traffic, you put their site up on digg so they'll get 8675765 more hits than they would have otherwise. They're probably happy they got you to post this if anything.
- Rogan, on 05/02/2008, -3/+1Actually, I'm not bothered about that. I only put this up as a matter of course.
- Qumahlin, on 05/02/2008, -3/+2you mean the matter of being a whiny bitch?
- Rogan, on 05/03/2008, -2/+1If I cared to I could just make a dupe account.
I have been in correspondence with Kotaku's writers about this matter. In that email I put across my feelings to them. However, that not the subject of this Digg article. I have not asked to be unbanned in this article, or in those emails. Bans are at their discretion. This post merely shows other readers, who would not otherwise know, what that level is.
Where exactly am I whining?
- Rogan, on 05/03/2008, -2/+1If I cared to I could just make a dupe account.

- DD00, on 05/02/2008, -1/+23Kotaku has always had a huge problem with their 'banhammer'. It's the most petty practice I've ever come across. Clearly the creator of that site was picked on or never had any form of authority in his life and feels the need to show his superiority. Not to mention how retarded it makes the posters there, constantly eluding to banning someone because they don't like what they posted.
The people who come to read your site and comment shouldn't be threatened. Sure I understand banning people for making inappropriate comments, but allowing some geek to lobby to get someone they don't like banned is just pathetic.
And yes, their posts over the past 4 or 5 months have gone considerably downhill.- anstice85, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3One of the truest comments I've ever seen posted anywhere.
- mrRB, on 05/04/2008, -1/+1Actually, I believe their official policy is that you're banned for being a dick. There was a mentioning 4chan, and someone posted an ASCII Longcat. Guess what happened?
- RajaDeVo, on 05/02/2008, -6/+17I've hated Kotaku for awhile now. Most of their news is taken from other websites who deserve your traffic and unique visits, but Kotaku steals their information and puts the smallest link at the bottom of the page. Linking to Kotaku hurts the original source, and that is bad for biz.
Besides, Kotaku's layout sucks, their opinions are horrid, and they are no longer in touch with the gaming community. Kotaku... u've just that shark, now please shutdown and leave us alone!- boing11, on 05/02/2008, -1/+2You could say the exact same thing about all the other gaming blogs ... they all do the same thing ... kotaku just happens to be one of the first to get started, and hence, are the one of the biggest. I personally hate their layout and the site overall, but I think I'm the one who's out in left field, considering how popular the site is. I don't get it.
- mrRB, on 05/04/2008, -0/+1Actually, I think they've mocked their own layout.
- daizaru, on 05/02/2008, -10/+4Rogz gets banned. Posted by Rogan... I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume they are one and the same. Don't be fooled into digging this guy for posting his own, waaah kotaku banned me story. If you want to call them out on their own site and critique their actions don't be surprised if they take action.
You provoked them, it might be overly harsh but you asked for it. - mushroomblue, on 05/02/2008, -10/+4buried. crappy story. banned user gets butt-hurt. whatever.
- dynelol, on 05/03/2008, -1/+1People act like the internet is some democracy. The terms and conditions usually say that you can be denied service for any or no reason. The internet isn't America.
- RajaDeVo, on 05/02/2008, -5/+7We should all do our part and bury all Kotaku stories, not digging them to the front page. People will only continue to keep going to Kotaku while we support them. Stop the support: no more Kotaku of Digg!!!!!!!
- justice7, on 05/02/2008, -5/+13Kotaku sucks, always has been a spam-blog site and always will be. Its garbage. I'm burying this.
- PurpleSfinx, on 05/02/2008, -9/+4It's well known on Kotaku that you have to make worthwhile comments to get on there. On the Australian site (mostly the same), a hell of alot of my comments never even make it (they screen them all).
On the other hand, something hilarious happened - I won a Microsoft sponsored Kotaku competition: the aim was to comment, and just do it well. I, not thinking of the competition, ranted about how a Kotaku writer's attitude to a particular issue was ridiculous, and also that the issue was ridiculous, and it was Microsoft's fault (at least partly).
And Microsoft and Kotaku rewarded me. Now I have Lost Odyssey. Yay.
It's a good site, it's just meant to be about *their* content, not ours. I can see Digg users not liking that. But, I mean, it's better to ban people that make worthless comments than to have it end up like YouTube.- MassHysteria, on 05/03/2008, -0/+3Uhh... you have to make worthwhile comments? How come everytime I look at their posts it's the same generic ps3/xbox/wii fanboy crap?
- beepimajeep, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1Worthwhile comments, as in ones that will generate more pageviews and posts from fanboys trying to get their (worthless) words in sideways.
edit: pretty sure he's lying about it too

- plnegative1, on 05/02/2008, -15/+8You guys are a bunch of whiny little bitches
- gils0n, on 05/02/2008, -6/+4They really are a bunch of whiny bitches.
It's their own site so they can ban people at will. I love the fact that they ban so freely; it weeds out the assclowns who post crap lacking substance that I usually reserve for the Gamespot or Gamefaqs forums.
And you people talk like every post is useless banter. Their day and night notes have been there for AGES and are merely a way of two editors on opposite sides of the globe to show what posts were missed, also showing commenters what posts were missed.
"Wahhh I got banned"
Good for you. Quit sucking, create a new commenter account, or find a new site.
