- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1***** great news! maybe there'e hope for that chrono trigger remake too!
- EricTheGrey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cheers to Vivendi for allowing the project to go forward.
I hadn't heard about this one until today. It'll be cool to see it come together.
There was another out there based on the Ultima series. I haven't checked on them for a while though.

Fat chance. Different companies. And Square can be a bit anal about their copyrights and trademarks.
I would love to see a CT remake though. Not a sequel or a prequel, but a real remake. - AdHominem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is strangely appropriate, as I just replayed KQ5 last month. As far as losing money for production costs, it turns out you also have to pay people to create the game in the first place.
- idiggit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Long live the King
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It takes them like 10 dollars to print the manual, burn the CD, print the box ect. So they loose 10 bucks on each unsold copy.
- aHellerax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks Vivendi. Incredible.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yay!!!!! This game was looking great, and I'm really glad to see that VU allowed this to happen. A company with a heart and a mind for fans. Wonderful work, everyone. I look forward to playing the game
- Jacob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The game is going to be free no money exchange involved download and play. Don't type before you find out what you are talking about.
- Samui, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any Idea why VUG would make them change the name?
- PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sweet! This game was awesome when it was first released, I loved it. Good to hear! Be interesting to see what they come up with.
- Nyuura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow . can't believe kings quest games are still around . i used to love kings quest 6 . that was my first time playing a pc game i liked . way back in 1992 .
- Presentlight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is nothing short of awesome! I am impressed with Vivendi.
- lordTalus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Alk...you're a dumbass. The game is going to be freeware.
- LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a BIG move for Vivendi. It's awesome to hear that such a great series is allowed to continue on when it was thought to have been dead. Long live the old Sierra RPGs!
- Aooogah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice! Good to hear that VUG isn't completely heartless.
- markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yesssssssss
- KinGvsKinG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why is there always someone that has to say "OLD..."???? good for you, buddy! you heard it before someone else!
- TECHSev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0pirate what? they can't make a dime on this game, so what is there to pirate?
- Ravenlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Firstly I'd like to second Alt's being a dumbass and not even checking to see what this is before wisecracking about it. You don't pirate freeware. And it makes your comment even dumber, to think that you're ready to happily steal from people who want to give you something for free.
Okay, now that that's out of the way - this is awesome. Cheers to the KQIX team for getting away lucky (didn't expect it to go this way), and congrats to Vivendi for making the right choice, even if it took a lot of duress for them to do so. - Strahd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^ I loved the ultima series. Too bad EA bought out Garriot and drove the franchise into the ground (of course Ultima 8 was largely to blame as well). The worst part is that there were some nice remakes out but EA shut at least one of them down. There are still some remake projects out there but it seems they're understaffed and are a long time coming, if ever.
Similar thing seems to have happened here...If the makers of this KQ aren't making money off Vivendi's copyright, I don't see a huge problem. Thankfully they changed their minds. Now someone's gotta hook us up with a torrent. - okcookienc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm very excited for this. I played Kings Quest all the way up through 7, Space Quest too, and Leisure Suit Larry. I was disappointed by Phantasmagoria, and immediately knew when it came out that Sierra would not continue their adventure game series in the same light with the introduction of new technology. Kings Quest 8 proved just that... I trust that the true fans will make 9 a fantastic experience.
- Spoonicus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Rock on!!
- Ravenlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And pdobear - this news came out yesterday. How that qualifies as "old news" when things that have been around for YEARS make it on here, I really do wonder.
- mcomp72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am so happy that we were able to help save the game. This is great, great news!!
- Wubbie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** yes!
LONG LIVE KQ (ix in this case)! - panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice! I can't wait to play this
- Dayyve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yesssssssssss!!!
Sir Graham FTW - nitroskanker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Whoohoo! I am happy now.
- spyhunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am amazed and impressed. I did not believe VU Games would make this decision, no matter how sensible it is. The screenshots actually look reasonably good; I'd really like to get a look at that trailer that was removed from the site.
- lame_duck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow... Just... Wow...
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Alk- Why on earth would you want to pirate from the good guys? Enough spamming. Contrary to what you seem to believe, using the word "pirate" as often as you possibly can does not make you 1337.
Back on topic, this encouraging news. I wasn't much of a gamer back in the KQ days, but I'm glad to see a company realize that loosening up on the copyright restrictions can be a good thing. Cheers to Vivendi. - cheesechick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Sweet! This game was awesome when it was first released, I loved it."
It's not a remake. It's a completely new fan-made sequel, but they do revisit many areas from previous KQ games. - flysilly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hooray! Long live KQ! Now, if only there would be a sequel to Quest for Glory....
- angelwspr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yay! i luv sierra games; kings quest, space quest, quest for glory 4ever!
- ajamison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0USE THE SEARCH FEATURE....My Lord, this is not difficult to understand, OP.
http://digg.com/gaming/Vivendi_Universal_Games_grants_a_fan_license_for_Kings_Quest_IX
Someone beat you to it. - richIsBored, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There has to be some incentive for a company to allow this sort of thing. I doubt it's them just being charitable.
My guess is that by allowing fans to create a fan-made sequel VU can assess how viable a commercial project using this IP would be. - GhostFreeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good to hear Vivendi isn't treating their IP/Developers like ***** anymore.
And I'd love to see a CT Remake/Chrono Break in my lifetime :( - deeblite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems very odd that they made them change the sub-title like that. "Every Cloak Has a Silver Lining" very much fits in with the naming scheme of the previous games in the series (well, the first 7, but I'm not even gonna talk about that last one =p) but "The Silver Lining" doesn't. I wonder what the reasoning behind that was? Not that it matters, in the long run.
- lordTalus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really miss the screen-to-screen genre.
- Ravenlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0RichIsBored - Good point. Not that I'd trust VU to MAKE another commercial King's Quest game, but that may well be why they're letting this one slide.
- Ravenlock, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shuffles - Okay, my bad if true. However, from the linked page... "On December 9, 2005, Vivendi Universal Games announced that they would allow King's Quest IX (now renamed "The Silver Lining") to continue!!"
So that kinda makes it look like it happened on Dec 9, doesn't it. - CaughtThinking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0deep within the cold evil heart of VUG, a beat was heard...
now they just need to release the tribes 1 source :) - tearinox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I liked the older games sierra made like like KQ3, SQ1, SQ2, SQ3, HQ1, HQ2, etc. excellent games.
- mcomp72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Shuffles said: "This IS old. VU granted the fan license on November 28th, not December 9th."
True, but it wasn't ANNOUNCED PUBLICLY until December 9th. So no one knew about it until then.
Don't be so quick to judge until you know all the facts, Shuffles. - Iced_Eagle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome work Vivendi!!! :D
Repect + 10
digg! - VPurpmalkV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't know posting to digg was a game. I thought it was just about sharing news with like minded individuals
- ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey, i loved QFGV. and now there's a remake of quest for glory II!
anyways, great news! - DNABeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A curious bit of trivia. Sierra never made a HQ2.
They made Hero's Quest - So you want to be a hero. Then Milton Bradley came out with their board game Hero's Quest and they had the license. Sierra had to change the name of the series and so the second in the series was called 'Quest for Glory 2'. The next time the first game was published it was also called 'Quest for Glory' and had all new titles. Each of the games since then (including the VGA remake of the first) has been called Quest for Glory.
Except for number five that was never ever spoken about. - okcookienc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@AlkivarIsGay:
Read before you blab. This game is freeware!
"You can still make them loose money by pirate their games, so they end up with thousands of unsold copies."
"It takes them like 10 dollars to print the manual, burn the CD, print the box ect. So they loose 10 bucks on each unsold copy." -
