- NickLee808, on 01/30/2009, -4/+144What school is this? My guess is that by "tormenting" he meant "the bullies would intentionally sabotage my mathematical formulas so they could get the higher grades", and the jocks of the school were probably the chess club members.
- Petrenks, on 01/30/2009, -5/+135Pokemon?!? Jesus, I was doing it all wrong!!! DAMN Digimon, DAMN you!
- Dronez, on 01/31/2009, -1/+106I'm having a hard time picturing a bully who is interested in pokemon cards.
- 6shot, on 01/31/2009, -3/+78I was expecting for the guy to be like "Yeah, I learned how to fight from Bully and GTA, so when I saw someone getting picked on, I stood up for them."
I was disappointed. - Misinformant, on 01/31/2009, -3/+78DO A BARREL ROLL
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -3/+44Yeah, I want some details into what kind of stuff the "bullies" actually used to do to him. Seems hard to believe he'd be willing to befriend these people if they were causing real harm to him. Then again, maybe he figured he had no choice but to befriend them or else he'd be picked on for the rest of high school. But for guys who played ***** Pokemon, they couldn't have been that tough. The kid obviously had some seriously retarded social skills, so he probably even found light sarcasm to be "tormenting."
- notquitegone, on 01/31/2009, -1/+40I had a similar story. I was a late-blooming freshman--terrified of the then-giant seniors. One day, a varsity lineman came up to me in the halls and asked me what I was playing. It was Pokémon Blue on my Yellow GB Color. We talked a bit about the game, I let him try it out, and shortly thereafter, he picked up a new GB Color and bought Pokémon Red. Before I knew it, he and I were trading between classes and after school. He even got me Porygon because he was good at the casino game. To this day, Pokémon holds a place in my heart. The first Pokémon that is. I never got into anything after that.
I liked this story a lot. Good times. - Saitekc, on 01/31/2009, -1/+40The funny thing is, it's probably more interesting then half of the stuff on the front page, and is something I can relate to. You can have your opinion, we'll have ours.

- notzak, on 01/31/2009, -2/+34Honestly, it may have helped this guy in particular, but that doesn't mean that video games are instantly going to get you friends. Sure he may have found common ground with MGS, but he still had to take the initiative to break out of his shell by himself, not through video games.
- Disastorm, on 01/31/2009, -0/+30honestly, do school bullies really exist? You always hear about them but i have never seen a cliche-style school bully before.
- Czechxican, on 01/31/2009, -1/+21If you're being bullied by guys who play pokemon you're doing it wrong.
- fxu1989, on 01/31/2009, -0/+19So I wasn't the only one...
This story smells like *****. - alexra, on 01/31/2009, -5/+23gamers 1, jack thompson 0
- Disastorm, on 01/31/2009, -0/+17do the scores ever increase. i always see 1 and 0 but its been so many times i imagine we should at least be at 2.
- GoKings, on 01/31/2009, -1/+17FTA:
"Due to the fact that Game Boys weren't allowed in school for any reason, I became part of an elite covert group of Pokémon traders. During our free time in classes and in between classes, we would hammer out trade agreements, sometimes going into intense haggling bouts to try to get the best trade. It could take days for trades between rare and/or high level Pokémon to be finalized. At lunch we would put our backpacks on the lunch table, with our Game Boys conveniently nestled inside. We'd use the lunch trays to conceal the link cable, which ran across the table. When the lunch monitors were distracted we'd quickly make the trades. Pokémon battles could be just as daunting. Battles would be negotiated like prized boxing fights and created many heated rivalries."
Note that this is in High School when he's talking about this. These guys were the bullies? What the ***** were the nerds like then? Jesus... - Shadic, on 01/31/2009, -0/+15If it was the original Gameboy, you could beat him to death with it!
- gozroth, on 01/31/2009, -4/+19"Due to the fact that Game Boys weren't allowed in school for any reason, I became part of an elite covert group of Pokémon traders."
genius. - Sil369, on 01/31/2009, -7/+21nice read
this comment made me giggle: "good writing makes me cry. you sir have done that. my tears strangely taste like cupcakes." - Czechxican, on 01/31/2009, -0/+14Yeah, you could replace videogames with weed and it would be the same damn story.
- aschmack, on 01/31/2009, -0/+14When in doubt, whip it out?
- babyheadout, on 01/31/2009, -4/+17Metal Gear Solid taught me I can live in a box.
- bobhellbringer, on 01/31/2009, -2/+14this sounds like a pretty lame high school
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -5/+16wow this was horrible. it was like something out of a ***** kids movie or afterschool special
- brynlb, on 01/31/2009, -2/+12Some of my best college friendships were forged during the heat of battle in Blood Gulch.
- Disastorm, on 01/31/2009, -0/+10back in the pokemon years, wasn't everyone in an elite covert group of pokemon traders??
- porkins21, on 01/31/2009, -0/+10(Turns on Australian accent)
Most likely these bullies were social rejects, like this nerdy kid in the article, except of the stupider variety.
As such, the bullies had to display their dominance through force instead of wits.
Truly fascinating! - abrasion, on 01/31/2009, -0/+10Bullys come in all shapes and sizes, from the alpha male jock, fit, tall, strong to the biggest of the semi-nerds, not cool enough to roll with the jocks but still bigger than all the nerds he can pick in.
Pecking order my friend - high school sucks balls. - tfosorcim, on 01/31/2009, -0/+10I'm guessing they didn't know how to play knifey-spooney.
- jas168, on 01/31/2009, -3/+12My true story: I liked video games but it wasn't my life. I didn't make many friends IRL due to pokemon because pokemon made me a geek. Being able to relate to people outside of HTML and pokemon helped a lot and still does to this day!
This article is from a fairy tale. - jaschwan, on 01/31/2009, -4/+13Pokemon.... Man my generation is a bunch of pussies.
- OhTheHumanity1, on 01/31/2009, -0/+9Um.... how did I miss out on the fact that high schoolers played Pokemon? I thought it was the domain of elementary school and middle school.
- itsLadam, on 01/31/2009, -4/+13When I saw the screenshot of "Bully", before I began reading, I assumed it was going to be about he learned to fight.
I was pleasantly surprised. - Ravenlark, on 01/31/2009, -0/+8No I don't.
- DocHoliday22, on 01/31/2009, -0/+8I honestly thought the kid was going to learn tactics from MGS and kick some bully ass.... I suppose it's the same thing anyway...
- inactive, on 01/31/2009, -0/+8Woah, I was REALLY doing it wrong... ***** you Tetris. And panel de pon.... and puyo puyo...
- MichaelAsp, on 01/31/2009, -1/+9What the hell? A bully that likes Pokemon? Aren't bullies usually dumb ***** with no general culture whatsoever? I guess by bullied he meant he was just some stupid kid that could never win in an argument and would go cry in a corner when he lost.
- Gareth321, on 01/31/2009, -0/+7Yea, I thought I was going to read about how he threatened some bully with a chainsaw, then procured a hooker for a magical first time. "Thanks videogames!".
- GUTTS, on 01/31/2009, -0/+7Yeah, you should probably stop commenting to yourself right about now. I mean the whole internet wanksta/thug/idiot persona isn't doing so well nowadays. Nahhmean *****!?!? BOOYAKASHA!!!
- NinjaPirateDude, on 01/31/2009, -1/+7Digimon rocked. i was way more into it than pokemon. it was like a transformers and pokemon mashup plus the digimon actually spoke english rather than bullcrap pokemon language. but this is only in cartoon comparison. pokemon video games kick ass.
- cerealjynx, on 01/31/2009, -0/+6Dugg for Tetris Attack
- noahgelman, on 01/31/2009, -0/+6I still have Tetris Attack for my SNES. Its a super bad ass game
- z95headhunter, on 01/31/2009, -0/+6Nor have I, the only people who seem to get picked on in my Highschool are the ones who act like jerks to people.
- Netrilix, on 01/31/2009, -0/+5I went to a pretty inner-city school, with tons of fights, but no real bullying. All the fights were relatively evenly matched; it wasn't just some strong kid beating the ***** out of some small kid. I've never heard a real-life account of someone getting their lunch money stolen or anything like that.
- xkorbin, on 01/31/2009, -3/+8holy *****.
- KnightOfNi, on 01/31/2009, -0/+5And of course no mention of girls...
- shawnz, on 01/31/2009, -0/+4this just in, two kids at columbine high school overcome bullying thanks to video games...
- Saitekc, on 01/31/2009, -4/+8I can definitely relate to this article, the same thing pretty much happened to me, not so much with the whole card trading thing though. :
- Notquitesane, on 01/31/2009, -1/+5It wasn't that he did something from a game that caused him to be socially accepted. It was the games themselves. The games were simply a connection used to form a social bond. I don't understand how you can be so stupid and so pessimistic at the same time. If video games directly affected us like that our parents would be running around saying "wakka wakka" and eating powerpills, trying to chase ghosts. Idiot. If the article said he learned how to fight from said video games, and thus stopped the bullying, then you'd have a legitimate point.
- Tylord4, on 01/31/2009, -1/+5Wow i remember these days...Pokemon was the ***** when I was younger. Hahaha back when the original MGS was coming out.
