- Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+45This is the first good thing Sony has done in regards to the PS3. If you don't think he's being forced out, you're nuts. Hopefully, this is the begining of major changes and they can get their act in gear and make the PS3 into something other than the butt of jokes.
- rjgrel, on 10/12/2007, -36/+77lol, playstation 3 is made of fail
- Kruse, on 10/12/2007, -12/+50...or play more Wii.
- TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42That "*****" designed the systems that broke gaming as in industry into mainstream. You can bitch and moan about Sony as a brand, they aren't the hippest thing on the block right now, but you'd be daft to not acknowledge what they've accomplished within the industry. Without Ken's designs gaming wouldn't be what it is now.
http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=18703&type=mov&pl=game - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+45There is only one flaw with the PS3:
No system-selling games. At all.
People can bitch about the price all they want, but then people bitched about the price of the Xbox 360, which at the time was considered ludicrously high. And people still bought it. And it went on to be a success because of numerous system sellers. You may cringe at PS3's price, but people ARE willing to pay that much to play videogames. The reason they're not paying is because there's nothing worthwhile on that system to justify it's purchase, and there'll be nothing for months to come.
Ken did the best he could, considering he had nothing to do with release dates for games. He just put out an amazing platform to make games on, and no one has really taken advantage of it in time because it's release was so rushed. But I do blame him for rushing it to market before developers had their games ready. And I blame him for having verbal diarrhea that contributed to the total collapse of Sony's PR and public image. Oh well.
Sony has probably already lost the console war this time around. Maybe they'll be back to their glory in 5 or 7 years. - lukeamotion, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37Wait a second... rewind... rewwyy rewwyy rewwyy....
CNN Money says: "He will become honorary chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. and act as a senior technology adviser to parent Sony Corp"
So he's not leaving the company all together. He's just retiring as chief executive of the Japanese company's game division.

- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31I think he and Yamauchi should form their own corporate demolition team to infiltrate and sink companies from within. Pure genius!
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -11/+37Ken Kutaragi's game is over.
- seneyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25So I wonder what his take on the price tag is now? Can he "work more hours" to afford a PS3 now?
He did some great stuff, but sadly he's gonna be best remember for being the bane of the Sony PR department during the PS3 debacle. Guess he didn't like his corner office... - psyonide, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26IT EATS MONEY!

The GBA is a portable super nintendo. The DS is the handheld that is a portabls N64 with a touch screen. - Zgouki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23I'm not sure what to make of this actually. I'm thinking that given the Japanese have such a strict work ethic and Sony having such high expectations of the PS3 this is all kinda odd. Given the machine isn't selling well. But I am not sure what they really expected at this point. None of the killer apps are out and therefore no one is buying the machine.
I kind of think he is taking one for the team Oh well he will be missed and I will always remember that picture of him holding up that huge photo-shopped PS3! - jmdajr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I'll never get 4d gaming now
- InfinitySnatch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20This is horrible. Now who will teach us discipline?
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Dugg for the verbalization of the rewind sound.
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18You don't think it should be him? Why the hell not? Did you not see the multiple reports such as this http://www.gwn.com/news/story.php/id/11544/PS3_Development_Kutaragis_Big_Secret.html ?
- philipz78, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16How? The press release was today!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20I own a PS2, Xbox, Wii, and a DS.
How the ***** am I a Microsoft fanboy if I say Sony blew it with the PS3? Show me your games then we'll talk. The PS3 cannot surpass the success of the PS2 because Sony got arrogant and figured what worked the first time around (DVD in PS2) would work the second time around with THEIR OWN format, which was the only goal all along. They didn't give a ***** about the games or gaming or anything else BUT getting this format into the households of many, just to make their sales reports seem better than they actually are. - enicholas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I expect that that's a polite way of saying "we're giving him a pension and never talking to him again".
- guitarh3ro, on 10/12/2007, -11/+26Sounds like the pressure finally got to him.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19One down, one to go. If the PS3 doesn't start selling soon, Hirai's next.
I own a PS3, and I'm happy with it, but Sony ***** up this launch in so many ways I've lost count. - sid0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14You don't have an understanding of how this works.
Say the PS3 costs 800 a console. Once a console is produced, it's 800 down the drain already. If they sell it for 600, they have actually got some money back. So the more consoles they sell, the better it will be for them.
Plus, more consoles = more games = a profit in the end due to licensing. The console is what is known as a 'loss leader' -- a short term loss taken for an expected future profit. Razors with disposable blades and inkjet printers are other examples.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loss_leader - lukeamotion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14My bad, he resigned from his role as President of the Japanese Gaming Division a few months ago. This is saying he's leaving all together.
Interesting. - TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -13/+25over nine thousand fail. do not want.
- lukeamotion, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Who's next to lead Sony and it's Playstation of DOOM???
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I came into this thread merely to see how many people wold mistake Ken Kutaragi for Kaz Hirai.
- Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12WHAT?!?! Kutagari was essentially the senior project manager for the PS3. He called the shots. It was his baby. He knowlingly hid cost overruns from his boss and cost the company at least $2B. On top of that, the project was delivered several months late. That's enough to get any project manager fired, regardless of the project or company. If you delve deeper into the history of the console's development, you'll see all kinds of bizzaro decisions by Ken screwed the PS3. Then look at how he behaved within the company. He refused to communicate with other Sony divisions. At a public event, Kutagari threw one of the other Sony divisions under the bus, blaming them for the PS3's delay and saying their production quality sucks. The man was an HR nightmare.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16His house payment this month was short...FIVE HUNDRED NINETY NINE US DOLLARS!!!
- venom8599, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It's not really that surprising. Japan is a different business environment. Employers and employees have a sense of loyalty still. It used to be like that here. You could get a job at a company and work your way up and work your whole career at one company. It doesn't happen so much in the US anymore though.
I remember there was a big fuss a couple years ago in Japan when Microsoft fired a bunch of people in their Japanese Xbox division in a way that would've been normal here, but unheard of in Japan. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14But the PS3 was doing so well...
- somesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Kutaragi has no doubt done a good deal of PR damage and likely caused some issues within Sony by withholding information and being nuts, but I would not say that this is indicative of the PS3 being seen as a failure by Sony. Problematic at times, yes, but it is very early in the life cycle and removing Kutaragi was likely just a move to ensure that the future of the PS3 is less problematic.
That said, Kutaragi has done more good than harm over his career, and it's unfortunate that all his harm seemed to come at once, making him seem like more of a risk than an asset to Sony; though he might be at this point. Here's hoping he does some more cool stuff before he dies. - ninephoenixes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Dugg sideways because I got buried for saying the exact same thing earlier.
- Dustin00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"The next console generation doesn't begin until... I step down."
- somesthetic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8to be honest, my comment was mostly a subtle jab at the fact that you misspelled "throw."
I do hate people who come into things with the intention of getting their fan boy on though, which you made clear was your initial intention. - jmdajr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9In January, Allard and the rest of the Xbox senior executives gathered to write brief statements on what motivates them to come to work every morning. The mission: to inspire the group's rank and file. "Most people put down flowery, make-the-world-a-better-place, Miss America types of things," Allard says. "I wrote: What gets me out of bed and into the office every day is the thought of Ken Kutaragi's resignation letter, framed, hanging next to my desk."
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Stepping down in the corporate world for no apparent reason is a sign of being pressured out, whether that be in Japan or the US. There is no conspiracy theory here. The PSP and later, the PS3 were not the successes (nor did they bomb) that they were supposed to be. The more you read about the PS3 development the more you find out about Ken's involvement and how it ended up where it is today. Sony's obvious attempt to land blue ray in every home didn't sit well with the general gaming public.
He is lucky that he staying on as a guest advisor (if thats true). I guess Sony does feel they owe him a bit for the wild success of the PS2...and in a way they do.
In the corporate world, when projects "fail" its never blamed on the lower level employees. It always goes straight to the man leading the project. Yes the PS3 is a project. Sony is bleeding money on every unit sold and not recouping the cost anywhere. Ken has been asked to step down so they can bring in new leadership. Hero to Zero in the corporate world is measured new everyday, no one really cares if you made a zillion for the company last year...what are you doing today? - philipz78, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11The fact that he was already moved to another department shows that Sony tried to force him out already. Someone has to take the fall for this disaster for the company, but I don't think it should be him.
- joey368, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10"*pant pant* I quit! *pant* I can't carry that giant piece of hardware all the way over to the land of success. *pant* We gave all our steroids to our PS3."
- thefaithful, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9PS4? But the PS3 is futureproof.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Sorry, meant to say Xbox 360, not the original Xbox.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8mweather's right! It was tragic when a couple of my friends O.D.'ed by playing multiple video games at the same time. They were going through some tough issues in life... used video games as a way to escape and ended up dying. Geeze.... this happens just a couple of months after my cousin O.D.'ed after playing to much football. What is this world coming to?
- Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Meh, not a Kutaragi fan, but doesn't stop me liking the PS3.
