- mojorojoe, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26Sony also went on to say that Ken had inflicted "Massive Damage" to Sony's financials.
- Mootabolife, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19You've been watching too many movies.
- mark_in_bc, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Removed? How does a big promotion and a bucket load of cash amount be being removed? I though failure in Japan was dealt with by falling on your sword.
- yidali, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15He got promoted to Chairman... innaccurate
- knobidy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Sometimes the best way to get rid of a bad superior is to promote and transfer them.
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10inaccurate AND duplicate from this morning
- Microdot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9how many times is this going to be inaccurately reported on digg today? jesus f'ing christ you fanboys are morons.
the man got a promotion. a pay raise. a nice new title. if anything... he will oversee it ALL now.
and "ZOMG! PS3 IS T3H F4IL!" - please... swallow something sharp and do your parents a favor. - jacenat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8AND missleading.
noone can tell if the ps3 will flop. currently, demand is still higher than supply ... and thats NO flop ... - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6So being promoted is considered being "removed" now? I should ask my boss to "remove" me from my position, too!
- KayinNasaki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@killerofkiller
It is when you didn't get ready fast enough to have enough consoles to sell. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7He wasn't just removed. He was ... "removed".
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6He won't need to lie, looks like he's going to make more and enjoy the promotion. WOW. No wonder Sony is failing.
- vorj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It said PS3 launch failures not that it was a flop. I think there refering to delays in manufacturing and the production costs and supply problems. 125K for N. America 80K for japan, europe delayed...I would say that was a big problem.
- whiskerlickins, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Ugh, totally misleading and inaccurate.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4why not? the companies take joy in such rivalry and failures
who don't you hold the companies up to such standards, not digg posts - BuddyDoQ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4For real, it's still on page two for crying out loud! It's also just as bad and misleading as the other headline. He was promoted. Lame.
- burnttoast11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2with google checkout, they still cost 59
- emorphien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What's weird is this is what you might expect. Instead he gets promoted. Sony is bizarre.
- subterfu9e, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As much as I hate the whole shortage issue, it's practically synonymous with every launch system. 360? check. wii? check. ps2? check. C'mon, cut the guy some slack. Isn't it a little early to start crucifying the dude yet?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4wow that's original, an inaccurate and dishonest title to a digg post.
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6So they flipped him over and exposed his weak spot.
Brilliant strategy really - "Failed launch. Hmm. Promotion?" - ViperDKM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Good thing the title isn't misleading and biased.
I want to be cool and bash Sony too. - Ryokurin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Technically Chairman is a demotion in a large company such as Sony.
A chairman of the board basically heads the board of directors and oversees meetings of the board. He has no power over the company itself, while the President is the essential CEO or top dog. So basically all Ken Kutaragi can do now is give advice. - sk8asd123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kung Fu is Chinese
- mlorimer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is clearly the standard executive smoke and mirrors fall guy. They changed his title. Changed his responsibilities slightly. Changed his pay so it comes from different places with different names, but still totals the same amount. It is just to make their share holders happy, and so they can tell the press something to make the company look good again.
- vorj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Figuring PS3 should of had 500K to 1M at worldwide launch and it was turned to 300K than it became 125K for North America, 80K for japan, Europe delayed I would say it was a failure.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3it was a long time coming
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4You take "joy" out of some executive supposedly being removed from his current position? You take the whole PS3/Xbox/Wii rivalry this seriously?
Wow. - burnttoast11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@KayinNasaki
Both the PS1 and PS2 launched with 200,000 units in the US and they seemed to be successful - Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Surprising that he's staying with the company, he must have some good friends pretty high in the Sony executive hot tub. Sony has received a lot of bad press regarding the delays and low yields on the Cell Processor and laser issues, I guess promoting him a chair position is their idea of "heads rolling".
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Plas-tree-son 3!!
- kirk06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Promotion or not, the PS3, and Sony in general is failing.
The final paragraph pretty much sums it up for Sony.
Maybe they should think about focusing on one thing in the gaming division? Pachinko, anyone? - guillo98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man Sony has to get their things in order because Microsoft and Nintendo have very very good machines/software/usability...I hope they get it rigth because the PSone and the PS2 where incredible machines and the games where incredible.
- Sell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FTA - "Kutaragi will focus on overseeing the entire operation rather than day-to-day business,'' said Nanako Kato, Sony Computer Entertainment's spokeswoman. His position at ``the top of the management doesn't change.'' "
That's how it's done in Japan. When the top brass fail or get too old they become consultants which basically means they don't do anything but still get paid. Better then how it works here in the US if you ask me. - lasombragh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5What the *****? Inaccurate. Last I checked, it was more of a promotion. And what's this ***** about the PS3 already being a failure?
The title should read "Ill-informed diggr posts premature conclusions." - aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you look at history and the Japanese culture (strictly on a superficial "what I read" kind of nature) the reasoning behind these articles may be false. The company may recognize that he has talent in other areas and doesn't want to shame him, but move him onto different projects. Why do I say this?
Gunpei Yokoi
He was the creator of the Game Boy. When he failed with the Virtual Boy he wasn't given a promotion, nor was he fired. In fact, according to Icons and some Googling he was kept in the company, but given nothing to work on. There's more to it than that, but the idea was to put him to shame, at least according to my memory. This not being a "Nintendo" thing but a "Japanese Culture" thing.
Forgive me if I am misinformed (because I'm annoed at Sony just as much at anyone else right now). But I do not think the idea here was to shame Ken Kutaragi seeing as he has a higher position and is probably making more money.
The poor guy died in a car accident not long after. He handed in his resignation rather than to keep on being treated as an outcast. - chrono03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, it is very common for Japanese firms to keep top management with the firm, even if they did totally screw up. It is totally different from the US where if you screw up, you go to another firm...
- Styvo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At most it was poor financial planning by Sony, looseing $300 a system...not to mention advertising. Its gonna take a lot of time and a ton of good games for them to catch up on their spending and make a cent off this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+12Couldn't he lie is way through this with the $ony board?
After all, he's very good at telling lies to the general public. - thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2And what's with the description? I don't know about outside of California, but you can't just walk into your local game store and pick up a PS3 like it was bottled water. And of course people are selling games cheap, there are more games than systems available. They want to unload them. PS3 is short in supply but they are still sold out and when the next shipment is released, they will be sold out too. Please people, it's ok to hate Sony, but don't think your hatred fuels the downfall of the PS3.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I heard he stepped down only after a brutal Kung-Fu showdown.
- vorj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1in japanese bussiness culture it's called a window seat. He was moved to a ceremonial position.
The designer of Gameboy suffered the same fate after the Virtual Boy. - MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1and most people who did manage to get one at launch aren't very happy with it.
The controller sucks (motion sensor is horrible and there's no rumble feature), it's too expensive, the graphics aren't any better than the xbox 360 (but it's more expensive), you can't stack other components on top of it (not recommended, but sometimes you don't have the space for everything in your entertainment center), lots of reported hardware failures right out of the box, techies have determined that their promised specs are actually different (slower cpu speeds, gpu, and memory speeds), developer tools are difficult and kludgey (which in turn may stall game development cycles), Blu-ray isn't an option so you're paying for something that may become deprecated, *takes deep breath*, and so on.... - deludeexistence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It happens a lot in the US too, very often in fact. It has happened a lot because of all that the SEC has done lately. They find minor things wrong in the books, and the CFO and/or President would get moved to a new position to keep everyone happy. It has happened with many companies, including the place where my dad works. The two both got raises, more and a promotion on paper because they requested one or else they'd create hell basically. It happens. Firing the guy would look awful, doing this looks like a good thing to anyone not in business.
- AnrasMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For those of you who still think that Sony's launch was a success...let me vent a little. I work in the gaming industry. A "success" is not about how many systems you sell (Sony is taking a loss for each one sold) its about moving software as well. Ask anybody who was reselling their system for a profit...did they buy any games...no. DEMAND for the system far outweighted practicallity for a userbase at launch. If someone says "Tickle me Elmo is the hot new thing" people will buy it...just to say they have it. Sony's mistake was slapping the number 3 on the system, and think that everyone will buy one because...well....they bought PS2??...right? I actually sat down with a few people from Nintendo recently and they have a great plan on how to move the industry forward. It's almost like they have a working respect for Microsoft. Hell....even Peter Moore said he was going to get a Wii at one of our conferences. And lets not forget the whole "we took the rumble feature out of our new controller because it interfered with...blah, blah, blah" SONY LOST THEIR LAWSUIT. They were FORCED to take it out. They didnt own the rights...simple. Its this type of arrogence that makes Sony dangerous for the gaming industry. A lot of small developers will go bankrupt once their titles dont sell on the PS3 and thats...sad. Sony's product while technologically superior to all the other systems will fail....because....its NEVER been about graphics.....it never was....its about "ARE THE GAMES FUN TO PLAY" If Sony can answer that with a system thats affordable and developers are willing to make games for the system that are innovative, then they might find a home. If not...it will be a VERY SHORT lifespan, one that they might not recover from.
- trunk8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To call the PS3 a failure at this point is to admit how much of an idiot you are. Now, the launch being a failure? Yeah, I agree with that. But it's way too early in the game to rule the PS3 out completely.
When the Xbox 360 launched last year and there was a shortage of consoles, no one called the Xbox 360 a failure. Launches are always bumpy, but as long as the consoles are selling then I don't see how anyone could accurately predict the future success of the console. - Chiminichanga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In the article they mention giving him partial credit for bringing Sony into the online gaming world in 2002. Most people who play online games know that Sony has failed in this business model as well. They are notorious for being the Microsoft of MMO releases. They pump out games and expansions with poor quality content and misleading information, leading to most users quiting their games and moving into higher quality games such as the popular World of Warcraft. It's better to help produce good ideas rather than a multitude of half-planned failures.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Japanese can Kung-Fu fight, they can do whatever they want.
- toast1226, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2My guess is they respect him for what he's done in Sony's past and it'd be too harsh a punishment to fire him or demote him so instead they gave him chairman position. Perhaps they also feel he still has talents and abilities that a demoted position would not be able to exploit.
- johnham, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Kutaragi deserved the boot, but seriously; calling the PS3 a failure at this point is ridiuclous.
They launched in the most hellish, horrible way possible, but it's not over yet. I am never going to buy a PS3 but even I am not crazy enough to assume that there aren't enough idiots out there to make it at least a moderate success.
I mean, at this point, they have sold every single console they possibly could have sold. I mean, they had a pitiful amount, but demand obviously exists. -
