John C. Dvorak(.org/blog): Wii will "dominate the future of gaming"
news.yahoo.com — "So my experience with this toy tells me that a fundamental change has taken place in game play —and it's all down to the controller. People were all pumped up about it before it came out, and now I can see why. It changes all the rules and will dominate the future of gaming. You watch."

- motang, on 10/12/2007, -8/+65He is only what 3 months late...LOL! But thats cool, considering the fact that he is a non-gamer, and like to play the Wii now.
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -56/+17The Wii will dominate the future of gaming only because more non-gamers will buy it, and non-gamers outnumber gamers.
For the regular gamers (specifically those who were never much into Nintendo consoles), I don't see any particular shift in their gameplay interests, and they're more than happy to buy Xbox 360, PS3, or stick with last-gen consoles for a bit longer.
As for those hardcore gamers for whom the Wii was the first Nintendo console in a decade, I don't know, but I sure am starting to see quite a few comments all over the internet about how they're bored of it, and complaining that there aren't any worthwhile games, and how the controls got boring after the novelty wore off, etc... Of course the dedicated Nintendo fans are just completely in love with it, and good for them. - voldemorty, on 10/12/2007, -4/+44This is the same Dvorak who used to call Nintendos "Bozo Boxes"...
- LordHelmet, on 10/12/2007, -10/+62Because REAL gamerz only play sports games and ***** FPS.
- berwiki, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5finally, after it's ridiculous innovation and record breaking sales...NOW John Dvorak notices it.
Early enough for late adopters to consider him clever and smart, but late enough for anyone who's been paying attention to think hes a dud.
He even missed the holiday season! Wake up john! - AirRaven, on 10/12/2007, -22/+15There's enough of a deluge of Dvorak's vapid assertions on SlashDot as it is.
Don't bring your detritus to Digg, plzkthx. - gamasutra, on 10/12/2007, -5/+56Hope he doesn't break a leg hopping on and off the bandwagon.
- fkr2, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6I like the way he thinks the Wii will dominate the future of gaming. It means he's accepted that the wii remote thingy is some sort of peak in technology.
Should leave him pleasantly surprised and typically wrong when the next round of xbox's/playstations/nintendos come out with more innovations. - EndersGame, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Who cares about John C. Dvorak. He is a nobody, his insight is about as useful as the ***** my dog takes on my lawn. And while the Wii will be the only current gen console I will purchase, its not the future of gaming. It didn't revolutionize anything, it just delivered what most gamers want at an affordable price, and that is good games with original content.
I don't even think the controller is that special, in fact I think its somewhat of a gimmick, kind of like the eye-toy for the PS2 or the second screen for the DS. I have been gaming the same way for 15 years, by pushing buttons. And that is how I will continue to play games until something truly revolutionary comes around. - imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2He's definitely a little late. He'll also be 100% right once the various developers start to take the Wii seriously and stop making games with pre-GameCube graphics or overly-simplistic and unrefined gameplay. They probably see the Wii as a quick cash cow by lowering their development costs by 80% but still getting away with charging $50.
Fortunately that trend doesn't seem to apply to the more mature titles coming out later this year, and Nintendo is doing their part to make some good games. Here's hoping. - whahaa, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2if dvorak says it, it must be true!
that guy is right about everything! - pmhn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I don't think he's late. Wii has been sold less than two quartals. Hype has been on longer for sure. I think he's just a honest, positively selfish realist. He doesn't believe until he sees with his own eyes. He'll still be earlier than 9x % of the population. Fair enough, and his opinions are almost always interesting, right or wrong.

omg I'm not a Wii gamer so I will obviously be ignored for saying this..and then we'll have guys who digg me down followed by comments made about this.
As far as I'm concerned however, I can see this going two ways...

- llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -19/+51You know that John C. Dvorak guy? He has always been right about his predictions. :P
I don't really care who dominates as long as Sony (PS3) and their RIAA buddies burn a fiery death into oblivion.- Scrappy1850, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3thats a great game! i have it on my PC
- DeepDoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16I have a large family. We have An N64, a PS2, a Wii, and PCs that are dedicated to mostly gaming.
The Wii replaced the Gamecube that we used have set up so I have a lot of that stuff as well.
The most popular games in the house are Rayman: Raving Rabids on the Wii, Guitar Hero series on the PS2, and older games on the N64 and emulated on one of the PCs.
I personally play Zelda on the Wii, Gutar Hero, and my FPS stuff on the PC the most.
I do not know about your kids, but my kids could really give a crap about the latest and greatest graphics. All they care about when it comes to choosing a game, is one thing: is it fun to play. Thats why they play the old Nintendo classics and arcade classics. Thats why they play a lot of Guitar Hero. And for sure that is why Raving Rabids is always loaded in the Wii when I want to play some Zelda.
Nintendo knows how to make fun stuff that works well. Rayman is a great example of a third party taking advantage of the Wii. Apparently that is not as easy as you might think. I got Red Steel in from Gamefly for it and either the WiiMote is really terrible at FPS or they did not code too well, cause the controls for that game were terrible. I sent that back same day.
Bottom line, despite what some of you may think, Wii is here to stay. Price+fun+innovation. Nintendo proved on the Gamecube that it did not have to rely on third parties for great games. Do you really think the Wii is any different? - popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4@Deepdoo:
The only thing Nintendo proved with the Gamecube is that when you bring too little, too late, you lose. Big time. Sales for the systems and games both were abysmal from day one. I guess a few people, somewhere, bought it, but overall it was nearly a Virtual Boy-sized disaster. They're doing much better with the upgrade. - DeepDoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I was not referring to sales numbers but to the quality of games that Nintendo developed for the GC
Mertroid Prime series, Paper Mario, MarioKart: DoubleDash, SuperMario Sunshine, F-Zero:GX, and The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker come to mind immediately. All of those are extremely high on the fun factor. Nintendo has always been good at that. Now the Wii has sales numbers and a built in Tier 1 game developer in Nintendo. - reed311, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Actually, the Gamecube was EXTREMELY profitable for Nintendo. Just because Nintendo didn't sell a billion units didn't mean they weren't making money hand over fist. One the other hand, the XBOX was a disaster, financially, losing Microsoft several billion dollars.
- theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sony is a very big company. The gaming division really doesn't have a lot to do with the music division.
On the other hand, Microsoft's music division (Zune) signed a deal agreeing to be the bitch of the RIAA. As a result, the Zune is the most DRM infected music player on the market, far more so than Sony's music players.
Likewise, going back to the rootkit mess, it could only happen on Windows. Three things were necessary for a rootkit to install. First, it had to be on a Windows machine. Second, one had to be running with admin rights. Third, one had to have autorun enabled by default. The second and third conditions occurred due to poor design on the part of Microsoft.
Admittedly, Nintendo hasn't been involved in any RIAA tomfoolery; neither have the gaming divisions of Microsoft or Sony.
- diggfinity, on 10/12/2007, -36/+10John C. Dvorak should go away.
- ChumpChief, on 10/12/2007, -24/+9I agree, this guy is so full of *****. This might be the first article he's ever done with some solid ground to stand on... look at his past articles about how phones shouldn't have wi-fi, search engines might be sued out of existence, PCs shouldn't be at a consumer electronics show, etc.
http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1874,3574,00.asp
This guy has NO idea what he's talking about, he just got lucky this time and happened to make a prediction that isn't completely ludicrous. - pmcall221, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18... http://dvorak.org/blog
- popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Well, I give Dvorak points for being the world's greatest technology troll. He is always full of ***** and takes the wrong side on any divisive argument while trying to convince people why he's right. He's almost _never_ right. I'd give you 10-1 odds he's wrong here again.
- Snoozer, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5I may not like all his opinions I fear that many here do not like him because he does not fit in with the group think that is digg.com. If he ran youbuntoo and wanted to cup Mr. Steve Jobs balls I'm sure you all would hum a different tune. If he ran around finding random rumors about Kevin Rose on the intertubes and posting them as stories on digg would you like him more? What if he spelled Microsoft with a $ ??
Mr Dvork is entertaining. One of the main reasons I listen to TWiT.
P.S I predict stories about youbuntoo, Kevin Rose, How great Macs are and how much Microsoft sucks to grace the front page in the next few hours. Actually, I'll predict that for everyday this week.
I'm cranky.
Thank you. - Shane98c, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@ ChumpChief,
Have you ever read any of the articles you linked to? That article about Wifi being killed off ( http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2098483,00.asp ), that was not about how phones shouldn't have wifi dumbass, that was about how phone companies are doing battle with free wifi throughout cities.
Read the articles before tearing them apart.

- trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -21/+13With DX10, 8900 GTX, R600 et cetera coming out I think this is going to be a marvelous year for computer gaming.
- cgeorge, on 10/12/2007, -7/+61One problem: you did not mention a single game in that comment.
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Computer gaming is more expensive than ever. The new DX10 cards are some of the most expensive video cards I've ever seen. And you can't forget that most of the new games coming out are pushing the hardware WAY more than in the past, with many current games bringing even the most high-end rigs to their knees -- a trend that, I believe, started with Doom 3.
Besides making things incredibly expensive, this is also resulting in hardware having shorter and shorter lifespans. It's not unreasonable to assume that a high-end PC you buy today will probably be an incredibly poor way of playing new games in as little as 2 years. Meanwhile, while a console never changes, you're guaranteed that a game released 5 years in the future will still run flawlessly at a silky-smooth framerate.
Still, you can't deny that there are more than a few outstanding games that are only available on PCs, so people who can afford this gaming lifestyle are undeniably having lots of fun. - quaunaut, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6Ilyag, you obviously either have no history in the PC games market, or are just oblivious.
When Doom 3 came out, just about any machine could run it, but it got bad press because people kept talking about running it at absolute maximum detail.
These aren't the "most expensive cards yet"- last generation was just as expensive when it came out, as was the generation before that, and before that, and before that...
You act like it costs so much money to have a PC that can do this stuff- a buddy of mine just built a PC for $800 that can run any game on the market now at near full if not full settings. Its not that bad, considering everything you get for playing on PC(better control scheme 9 times out of 10, better online gaming, mods, superior graphics). - staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Some of my favorite games I never expected or saw coming. Maybe he has a point in being excited about the extra power devs have to play with.
- cragga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1sounds marvelous... marvelously expensive.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1thanks to microsoft computer gaming requires you to add an extra few hundred $ to the cost
since DX10 is only available on Windows Vista... - trubbleshute, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sorry for not mentioning any games in the comment.
Here is a link to some 2007 games http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=24525221&msg_id=269117431
I know PC gaming is incredibly expensive; Tomshardware's vga charts on Oblivion outside at 1600x1200; the best card was the 8800GTX at 30.5fps. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ilyag
The new 320mb version of the 8800GTS is both affordable and DX10. Viva la NVIDIA. Can't wait for ATI's response =D

Wii "dominate"? please. Wii is a gimick, Ive played it plenty (at a friend's home & @ store (where they were quite available for purchase at that exact moment.. as is quite common here I guess))... and the controller tracking just blew.
Waving the controller around and hoping the game reacts correctly is not exactly satisfying.
The best days of Wii are *right now*. It will not have legs or a long tail... every Wii owner will end up watching (envying?) XBox 360 (heck, even POS3) owners enjoying vastly more rewarding experience.- Scrappy1850, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9where is "here"? i live in DC and i cant find a Wii anywhere
- theeggman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I somewhat agree. I think there is a lot of hype still driving the Wii. How often do you see a story on Digg talking about how great the Wii is? Give it it at least a year then you will see if it is a fad or a real shift in gaming.
- wageslave1, on 10/12/2007, -20/+4I live in Windsor, Ontario. Ive also seen consoles on the shelf in Detroit.
This "Cant buy a Wii anywhere" meme is bullocks. I half suspect this is an elmo-market rigging on the part of Nintento. - goldfenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I just want to say that I hate every one of you bastards who have Wii's for sale near them. I *still* can't find them.
For what it's worth, iTrackr says that about 13% of stores nationwide have Wii's in stock. And usually that number is high, due to gamestops' not updating their stock properly. - Twindagger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@wageslave1-
I think that it's a very localized thing. Where I live (Salt Lake City, Utah) you can't find a Wii unless you're willing to show up at 6:00 AM the day a shipment comes in. This isn't just Game Stop/EBGames, it's everywhere, including local retailers. However, I have no reason to doubt that the Wii is more plentiful elsewhere. - inajeep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6So your view of those two locations constitutes all of the US and Canada. Your a bit deluded. I know my little area in NJ is denuded of wiis. Based on online friends they had issues getting Wiis too. All over the country. Basically it's hit or miss. Just like your half speculations your making assumptions that aren't supported by facts.
I do agree w/ your opinion on Dvorak though.
They sold about 5 million wiis so far so it's a good bet that it's more than gonna double that buy 07 holiday. At 10 million your at a magic number for gaming profits. Now if the 3rd party developers come through it's gonna be a bigger hit than it is now. - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -12/+7"Wii "dominate"? please. You just don't WANT the controller to react right so you say ***** like that, as if you actually believe it. In reality you are a gaming "kid". You have no idea what gaming really is and are only familiar with the current and last gen of consoles. You nothing of the past and buy into marketing schemes like no other. I have seen your kind before. The few of you all act the same. Immature, impatient, and jealous.
I got news for you. The Wii is here to stay. This old guy doesn't know his ass from a whole in the ground but the Nintendo Wii isn't going anywhere. - walkingdogs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Kind of like the DS when it was first released? Now look at the unstoppable juggernaut it has become. Right now you are seeing companies getting a feel for the controller and what it's capable of so thats why you see alot of ports with tacked on controls. But I guarantee by the end of the summer you will see some games that offer an experience like you have never seen and when that happens watch out. Graphics will get significantly better, price will drop and game makers will be comfortable with the interface. I get the feeling the Wii is going NOWHERE and will be a major player this gen of consoles

I probably play around 5-10 hours of games a day. I love playing games so much, if im at a friends and have time to burn its addictinggames or their xbox/playstation. I loved the nintendo 64 and when gamecube came out I wanted to give it a chance. Everywhere and everyone I knew who had a gamecube was under 12 years old. Every single game I saw for gamecube looked like it was made for 6 year old kids. One time my ex-gf's little brother somehow convinced me to play him in madden on his gamecube. Once it started I was relieved that the players did not look like 4 year old kids. It was still the worst gaming experience ever. When I saw my cousin's roomates wii I felt really bad for him buying one. I sat down and watched him play Zelda for about an hour. Not only did it look like it was made for 4 year olds , it was extremly boring ( i watched him do a temple that had monkeys and he had to keep hitting windmill type things to change the direction of the platform he was on.). Everything looks like a saturday morning cartoon on the wii and gamecube to me and it doesn't apeal to me at all. I'll give you that in wii sports , playing tennis if fun for about one game or two, and I even saw a girl play it later that night, but in almost all those games, real motion wasn't needed and definantly wasn't as effective as flickin ur wrist as quick as possible. I like the idea of the motion sensing, but I still think most of wii's games look like they are made for my 9 year old sister. If this makes it sell to kids all across America then great, but I think ill buy that xbox360. - waffledad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And that's why people are still buying them like crazy... my neighbours come over to play all the time because it is a "gimmick". Most people are stating how much FUN it is to play. Just because you say it is, doesn't mean it is so! Wii is here to stay, get used to it!

When he makes a prediction, you would be wise to completely ignore it.- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -11/+8I'm pretty sure the only reason Dvorak is famous in technology circles is because he shares a name with a certain computer keyboard layout.

What's next?

I wouldn't wipe my bum with what he says... literally.
- Lonecow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I love Dvorak in the same way I love Luke Smith from 1 UP. I disagree with a lot of what they say, but they make their statements in such a stubborn ass way that you can't do anything but love them.
I love the Wii more, and while I agree with Dvorak this time, he also said the mouse was stupid and would never catch on..... - crimsonnblue, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7While the wii is pretty fun, I doubt the whole gaming industry will migrate over to this type of controller as a standard for all consoles.

The wii controller is not a hyper-accurate, full-motion virtual reality. Its kind-of... say.. kludgy in my experience.
Games dont behave in discreet, predictable manner... there is WAY too much delay and gray area. Ive read time and again that the new SSX Blur is virtually unpredictable in control. You have to 'wave your arms about' and not do precise, distinct motions.
Wii is more duck-hunt and less Lawnmower Man than people on Digg would like you to believe. - br0ck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Ive read time and again that the new SSX Blur is virtually unpredictable in control. You have to 'wave your arms about' and not do precise, distinct motions."
Are you sure you read it time and time again and not just once in the 1up review at http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3157533 ? If you go to the bottom you'll see a number of people pointing out that the reviewer just isn't good at the game and didn't take the time to learn it. Just like the old SSX games, the incompetent players can wave their hands in place of mashing buttons, but there's no way at all that you can pull off some of the more complicated tricks without lots of practice. The series is definitely targeted at a gamer more willing to put some effort into learning how to play. Try the IGN review, they actually learned how to play have a much more accurate review: http://wii.ign.com/articles/768/768874p1.html - MaynardJK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@wageslave1
You are confusing bad hardware with poor programming. Look at ign's preview for Metroid Prime. They say that the last build they tested controls almost as well as a keyboard and mouse if I recall correctly. - mattfugitive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Wii and XBOX will dominate and here's why:
EA backed away from the PS3 cause it's lack of sales and Sony's Promise to produce more consoles.
Guitar Hero is coming to the Wii and XBOX 360, making people that bought a PS2 just for that game pissed off hence there lashing at Sony.
NOT ONLY can you play new games with the new controller, but the Wii has a virtual console in which you can download the old school games and relive the glory days of 8-bit and 16-bit wonder.
I hear by declare that Wii and XBOX are the only two consoles on the market. The PS3 is sadly going the way of the Neo-Geo.. a hyped up technology that no ones ready for, nor can anyone afford. XBOX 360 has everything we need as far as Hi-Def Gaming and is more for the serious gaming crowd. The Wii is more family oriented and anyone can pick it up and play. By the years end I won't doubt if we see Nintendo and Microsoft own 50% each of the market.
So I say goodbye to Sony.. and thanks for Tomb Raider!- DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9EA hasn't backed away from the PS3, they still have several games being released for it in the next year or two.
Why would someone who bought the PS2 version of Guitar Hero care if it gets ported to the other systems?
I "hear by" declare that you make no sense and are probably 12 years old. - crimsonnblue, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Its funny because I have been to several stores and have seen ps3's in glass cases. Nobody wants the damn things.
- quentinp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I think the Sony will win out (or at least be a contender again), but it's going to take a few price drops and a pile of exclusives (and probably 2 or 3 years). Things are looking rosey for Nintendo (between Wii and DS), and the 360 is definitely going to be sitting pretty as well.
I guess I'd write the PS3 off as well, but Sony is so big and established that I think it still has a very good chance of pulling the PS3 out of its death spiral. And it has the PS2 to back it up. - sonochamp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm pretty sure that the total number of Wiis sold world-wide is about half, if not more, than the number of 360s currently sold. At this rate, the market share will not be 50% each. At this rate, it may end up being 60/40 in favor of Nintendo. But, that's assuming that the Nintendo will continue to come out with games that fully utilize its revolutionary control scheme and not become a novelty. I'll agree with you, though, things don't look very good for the PS3 by any means. (I blame the Blu-Ray drive. For the love of God, Sony, make the Blu-Ray drive optional and cut the price of the system!)
- zeromous, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I wrote a story exactly about this:
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Is_Microsoft_In_Trouble_Pt_2
Not a lot of people agreed with the idea that the Xbox360 is actually in trouble because of the Wii...but I think it could very well happen if Sony gets some momentum (which they appear to be gaining despite misteps).
I was out looking for a PS3 today, and I found 1 after quite a few stores. Toys R Us says they've been selling out consistently and they would get more Saturday, but I found a lone ps3 next door on a hunch. Now that I'm home with it and fiddled with it for a few hours, I'm quite happy with it, and I definately like it better than my friends Xbox360 (despite the PS3's deficiencies) - avolant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@sonochamp:
you do realize that the blu-ray drive, as expensive as it is, is literally the only thing keeping the ps3 afloat.
say what you want about the price, its still the cheapest blu-ray player on the market. - chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Having the bluray drive as an addon is better than forcing it down everyone's throats for extra $
$999AUD is just too much
not everyone has a HD TV and 7.1 surround sound so the bluray drive is pretty much useless to them - sonochamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@avolant
Who's buying the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player?
Who's seriously buying Blu-Ray players?
Yes, there are people buying it, but let's see how things work out if HD-DVD wins the format war or if both formats fail and everything moves to downloadable content. The only reason that the XBox 360 is cheaper than the PS3 is because the HD-DVD is OPTIONAL. If you buy the high-end 360 (because no one is really buying the Core system) with an HD-DVD drive, it costs just as much as the 60 GB PS3. The XBox 360 is the cheapest HD-DVD player out there, but no one is buying that for an HD-DVD player.
- DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9EA hasn't backed away from the PS3, they still have several games being released for it in the next year or two.
- Epik, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Actually no, even with all this hype about consoles, PC gaming is without a doubt the way of the future. =)
- BrotherLuigi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Wii Wario? At least get the name of the game right, it says it in big letters on the box!
And as for the "no resistance" injuries, somebody let this guy in on the secret than you can calibrate the remote - DarkStalker, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11I don't know... just about everyone I know that has bought the Wii at launch are already bored of it. I know that it used to get a ton of playtime here at the office and now it just sits there collecting dust.
The novelty has really worn off fast and I think we're going to see the Wii take a nice dive bomb around the summer time unless Nintendo has something major coming soon.- Cannfodd3r, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Darkstalker's probably going to get dug down for that comment, but I think it's becoming a valid question as we head into March. As someone who's yet to pull the trigger on a Wii (admittedly in part because I can't find one of the damn things), I'm already starting to get that N64/Gamecube feeling.
That is, a console with some amazing first party games, a handful of good 3rd party games and about a 6 month wait between any of them. I'm hope I'm wrong, because I'd like to see the Wii be a viable platform (and compliment my 360), but could they release some good games for it (other than Zelda) that aren't glorified mini-games? - DorkmasterFlek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You know what, you'd be totally right if the Wii ended up being like the GameCube in that the best games were all released by Nintendo and they were 6 months apart. But I really don't think that will happen, and here's why. I've already seen tons of stories about publishers and developers suddenly jumping on the Wii bandwagon to make games for it. But games take time to make, so of course the first year or so will be slow. It's always like that. Remember when the DS came out? It was slow for the first year until the Brain Age games and Nintendogs started a trend in developers that has been growing ever since. I predicted that the same thing would happen with the Wii. Initially, developers are wary to jump on board due to limit success with the GameCube. Given the strong initial success of the Wii, developers are just now getting on board. Not to mention the fact that working with the controller is totally different from both a player and developer perspective. In the next few years, I'm betting you'll see a surprisingly strong 3rd party showing on here, if only because developers can make games they couldn't do on the other consoles no matter how much horsepower they have under the hood.
- Cannfodd3r, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Ugh... of course I get dugg down. In asking a valid question I dared criticize the almighty Wii....
- MaynardJK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Cannfodd3r
You are being dugg down because it is waaay too early to start calling the Wii the next gamecube. 3rd party developers haven't even had a chance to make games yet because they were all banking on Sony being in Nintendo's position right now. They are starting to work on them, but games aren't finished overnight.
How many great and original games were out for the 360 in its first 3-6 months?
The sky isn't falling. The games will come. - avolant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10i want some ***** online play. is that so much to ask for?
- Cannfodd3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Maynard,
I know it's early. That's why I didn't call it another Gamecube. Rather, I said I'm "starting to get that feeling". I know the 360 was knocked for being somewhat slow out of the gate. The thing is, between playing PGR and COD2 on Xbox Live, I can't say I really noticed. When I look at upcoming releases for the Wii for the rest of this year, I see what I've seen for the past 10 years with Nintendo; AAA "must have" titles spaced out with little in between. Will this change as the Wii continues to sell? I expect (and hope) it will but it would be nice if this could be addressed here instead of everyone just repeating comments about how their grandma who never played videogames now plays Wii Sports. - popfrogs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2You had me up until you said this line:
"if only because developers can make games they couldn't do on the other consoles no matter how much horsepower they have under the hood."
They can do everything the Wii can do, and make it look better, and play online, on the PS3. All it takes is for Sony or a third party to release a motion-sensing "game stick" or Lucasarts to release a Bluetooth light sabre and your argument is gone.
The Wii is nothing special..it was all about the controller and Sony has proven with fl0w that the Sixaxis and it's motion-sensing tech is more than up to the task. Sorry to sound like a fanboy but look at the facts in this case. Honestly, the only thing the Wii has left is the low price.
- Cannfodd3r, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Darkstalker's probably going to get dug down for that comment, but I think it's becoming a valid question as we head into March. i agree about novelty wearing off. its not even a kickass implemented novelty at that.
wiimote is like a 1dpi mouse with alzheimer... - ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6Gotta love the Wii fanboys.
Dvorak is an idiot. He is never right... Oh wait. He said something nice about the Wii
He is insightful. He is a genius. This time he got it right.
Oh, please. You cannot have your cake and eat it too.
Only a fanatic thinks in terms of absolutes. Sometimes Dvorak is right, and sometimes his predictions are wrong. Sometimes you are going to agree with him, and sometimes you are not. Smoke a joint, get laid, eat a twinkie, and deal with it.- toastjam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Most of the comments I've seen have been along the lines of "Dvorak usually sucks, but this time he got it right..."
I don't see anyone looking to worship him because of this--maybe just have my threshold set too high? - mantar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0eat a twinkie?
- MrDgr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2ibeetle - You hit it right on the head.
- toastjam, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Most of the comments I've seen have been along the lines of "Dvorak usually sucks, but this time he got it right..."
- DigitalOmnivore, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Dvorak rules. You just all wish you had his job.
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3wow I thought he was wrong 100% of the time. Apparently it is just 99%.
- mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Because I'm going to base my next gaming purchase on the opinion of a washed-out 55 year old cranky old fart...makes perfect sense.
- Zreitan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If there is someone willing to listin, there is someone willing to say something
- crapple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6This bodes poorly for the Wii. I'm a Wii fanboy, but every prediction Dvorak makes, is horribly wrong. He drives me nuts the way he pretends to be an instant expert in so many areas and has shown his ass many...MANY times.
- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Everybody says this, but has anybody documented all the instances of him being right/wrong? The thing is.. when you make as many predictions as he has, he's bound to look like an idiot and look smart. He just does it because he knows he is going to rile people up and get attention but that nobody will follow up on it.
- melissawm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Just to tell you guys saying "I see Wiis everywhere" that I am in Belgium, been hunting for a Wii since launch, with no luck whatsoever. And I know at least 10 other people (spread around Belgium) who can't find it either. My boyfriend lives in Norway - no luck there. So, where exactly ARE YOU and CAN YOU SEND ME A FRACKIN' WII?????
- DorkmasterFlek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Dugg for using the word "fracking" in a sentence. We need to petition Webster or somebody to add it to the dictionary.
- chingy1788, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For all those people seeing Wiis "everywhere"
are probably half asleep all the time dreaming about Wiis being everywhere (ie they want one as well, or want another one) - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe they see empty display boxes in store and assume they are in-stock since they don't bother asking about them...
- Zreitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's amazing he gets away with this crap. Now dont get me wrong i think he's great.. its just he's found niche and uses it. He just watches the tech industry and pops out of his hole every now and then with some broad general statment of doom and gloom or to declare the future is set in stone.
I gotta hand it to you John... - HanSolo69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wow, it's awesome how he can totally look at market trends and regurgitate that into terms i can relate to! wow, without Dvorak I would have never known that the Wii is going to be the champion! I really hope he takes the time soon to tell me about how the PS3 was DOA. That would be really helpful to hear from somebody else, I'm not sure I believe the facts I've already heard for the last 3 months.
- MrDgr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1His shtick is getting old (even if the Wii did win him over). That proves he's regurgitating. I don't mind when he writes an opinionated article on tech-related items, but I'd argue that the Wii falls under gaming. John - stick to your niche. (like he's reading this)
- Uberdork, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Flame Apple, praise Wii. Well, Dvorak has Digg figured out.
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Huh? Digg is all about both Apple and Wii.
- dub713, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Dominating? DOMINATING?? haha. nope. NOT about it dominating the future of gaming, but by what it has just contributed to the future of gaming. rest assured silly man, sony and microcrap will add their two cents soon enough.
there isn't one force, game, entity, genre, platform,or whatever that will dominate the future of gaming. while they will compete, they will all contribute, and help it grow. - weister42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1As long as Wii doesn't have Halo and GoW they won't dominate jack.
- bdgraaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if this guy believes a single word he writes. He openly admits to making outlandish statements just for attention/traffic (see: http://youtube.com/watch?v=gOHzHVF-4Mg).
Does he REALLY think the Wii will dominate the future of gaming or is he just saying that even though he doesn't believe it because he wants attention? - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Well, the reason why the Wii is so popular should be quite evident.
1. Price: The Wii is the best priced, hence easier to justify on the wallet
2. Design: The Wii is beautiful and small. Nintendo were smart to take a few design tips from Apple.
3. Wiimote: The Wii does something no other console does - it makes you feel more connected to the gaming environment. This is clearly the future, where we will eventually end up with a complete virtual environment for all senses.
4. Approachable: The Wii is marketted as cute and fun. Not 'hardcore' (jesus christ). Nintendo fans and gamers will already be buying the Wii, but this element draws a greater casual gamer crowd in.
5. The DS: There's no doubt that the success of the DS is what has helped immensely. Nintendo's ability to fight off even Sony have made people confident of the Wii's chance of success. But this is really just a foot note compared to the next point.
6. The Gamecube: The Gamecube was a massively overlooked console. People doomed it to failure without giving it a chance. But now everyone is looking back at the 'Cube and realizing just how many quality games there were. Hindsight is 20/20, so this has played in the Wii's favour.
But most importantly:
It's about the games. Nintendo has an awesome reputation of being perfectionist about their games and releasing amazingly polished games that end up being long lasting favorites that people still want to play over a decade later, casual or hardcore gamers alike.
Gaming is supposed to be about having fun. This is why the Wii is winning and the XBOX 360 is doing fairly respectably, but the PS3 is failing immensely... because Sony always thought they could win by over-hyping and regurgitating the same old toss and people eventually figure it out and get sick of it.
The only reason the PS2 succeeded was GTA 3, DVD playback and a reasonable price... Will that be enough this time around? Nope!
As a great man once said: "Fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@Jellygraph I agree with everything you said. It is about the games, Nintendo nailed launch with Wario, Zelda, Excite Truck, Wii Sports etc. But now it's Sony's turn, they have Virtual Fighter 5, Lair, Motorstorm, etc and later in the year FF and MGS4, also later this year Microsoft X360 has Halo and Bioshock that come to mind. So I agree and we can all agree Wii had a great launch, but Sony and Microsoft aren't bringing out their big guns until later this year. Will Mario and Metroid be enough? The only thing I didn't really agree on was your jab at PS3. Maybe you have been hanging around digg to long, or maybe you are part of the Wii 360 group, but in the real world PS3 is doing fine. While it's obviously not selling like Wii, it is selling.
Here is a link comparing PS3 launch too X360 launch which was considered successful.
http://www.vgcharts.org/aconscomps.php?name1=PS3&name2=X360&type=2&align=0 - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gamecube had a terrible launch lineup: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_GameCube#Launch_titles . Mostly a bunch of ports and Luigi's mansion. What were they smoking when they thought they should launch with Luigi's mansion after having previously launched with a masterpiece like Mario 64.
The controller I think was also a major stumbling block. I know some people swear by that thing, but basically it looks like a confused toy. They were torn between -actually- simplifying game play and keeping their console open for the bevy of bad 3rd party ports that made up the majority of it's games and ended up with something that was inferior for both purposes.
The gamecube did eventually end up with quite a few good games, but by then it was already too late. It's cool that those games will hopefully get a new life on the Wii.

- cockmaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I want somebody to explain to me why swinging a remote is SO MUCH "FUN". I've used the wii plenty and while its fun (when its actually doing what you want), it gets old.
I define fun by new experiences and I do see most games more as work than fun because they dont innovate or are compelling in any way shape or form.
moving around a room with a remote or shooting with a remote isnt new to me. IF any games on wii are going to impress I need some top notch story telling or game play i havent seen before, not just the same gameplay with a different controller.

- Mediapython, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dvorak has had his time and it's reaching the point where he needs to just disappear. The poor sap just has to keep people talking about his name and that's kind of pathetic. Ironically, if he had been a bit smarter, he could definitely have ridden the internet wave in the beginning but he didn't have the wherewithal to know what to do. So what does he do now? He starts to discuss the Wii -- long after everyone else has mentioned it. I used to like the guy but now he kind of reminds me of one of those creepy old men that hang around arcades. Move it along, Dvorak and stop trying to hang with the kids.
