- chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33Isn't this comparing apples to oranges? Both systems play games but that's where the similarities end.
But if you do want to compare all game systems then its not the DS vs PS3, it is the DS versus everything! The DS also beat the Xbox 360, Wii, and PSP too, although it seems everything but the original Xbox is beating the 360 in Japan. The only other system which is selling as well as the DS is the PS2. - latova, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28I gave my little sister a DS for christmas. I can see why they would choose it over the the PS3, the DS is actually really, really fun. She loves the thing.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26probalby because one costs like ***** 480 dollars less...probably why eh
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18This is by far on of the most stupidest comparisons however.
"Americans choose Civics over BMW M3s"
"Russians choose Vodka over brand new mansions"
"Kids choose playing baseball over World Series tickets"
All of these are resounding true, but for very obvious reasons. - chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14"Bull ***** according to the article there was plenty of ps3 in that store."
And it says they also they eventually sold out.
"he was saying it was not as popular as the lite"
This was the only valid claim you made. Next time, leave out all the fluff and condescension and only type your main points.
Also, if you are going to try to be "official" and debate a person, please learn how to:
a. properly quote the person you are debating (i.e. quotation marks)
b. not counter them by using an (incorrectly spelled) expletive
c. not base your counter argument on a phrase which is then countered in the same paragraph (as pointed out earlier)
d. avoid using the phrase "your (sic) wrong"
e. properly punctuate your paragraphs. They were all terribly difficult to read. - merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10In other news, bottled water is selling 5x faster than the DS lite!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9well, yeah, a ds is like 120$, and a ps3 is 5 times that.
why would it even make sense to compare the sales? - airbornx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I guess Burger King is better than Ruth's Chris because it sells more....
- Supaman223, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ Elsan
Its more like this, You have $1 The apple costs 50 cents, while the orange costs $10, Which one are you going to buy, It dosen't look like you have choice. - bdickason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sorry, I won't submit diggs during 6th period Algebra class anymore.
- chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm a wii fanboy but Walmart always sells their PS3 in bundles that cost upwards of $1000 . That's a pretty big factor right there.
- dharm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6futureshop had a 1000 ps3s available for sale on xmas... they sold out in a matter of minutes.
- Saiing, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5>But it's true. They LOVE Hello Kitty. The women and some guys anyway.
What utter crap.
You'd be hard pressed to find a Japanese guy who is into Hello Kitty. It's mainly for young girls (pre-teen) although there are a few women who like it too. Some of the crap and misinformation that people offer up as facts on Digg is ridiculous. You've probably never even been to Japan.
I live in Japan. - bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10IMO I think the reason the DS lite is selling so well is because it is cheap and looks fun. People do not want to buy a 10 year old a massive entertainment system. A PS3 is more or less a wedding gift or a birthday present. Same principle for the wii although the 360 to the parents and the grandparents eyes looks like something a teenager would want.
"The PS2 was the best selling non-portable console, beating all next-gen systems."
Of course it is, it has been out for over 6 years and has the most variety. If we compared the PS2 sales of Q4 this year or the year it was released to the DS lite sales of Q4 this year the DS would beat it.
"Also, the PS3 wasn't exactly "collecting dust". It has limited hardware supply and sold out."
The reason it sold so well at launch was because everyone (well almost everyone) wanted to sell it on ebay for massive profit. Every time I visit a walmart or a target I see about 3+ PS3s because nobody wants them. - warlordwiggles, on 09/07/2008, -0/+3I don't know, the DS Lites were in such short supply down here in Florida that for Christmas I got a new wallet containing 140 dollars instead. They were also sold out all across the internet and had been since the start of December.
- tackle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and, how exactly is it different from here (US)?
- VitaminM80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have both a DS lite and PS3 and I love both but I spend way more time on my DS. I play it whenever i have a few minutes to kill. There's a pretty wide variety of games that are fun. DS's are easy to find, and at 130 bucks they are very affordable.
- AlexSuvorov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Way to obscure numbers like that. Technically we could say that the ps2 AND DS light in sales alone is owning the xbox 360 ps3 and wii and game cube combined. But that's comparing apples to oranges.
- animaniacsrule, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3One thing about Japan that doesn't necessarily relate to most (but not all) of America...trains. Well, more than just trains, public transportation in general. When the majority of the population spends a lot of time waiting at train stations or being cramped onto one of those human coffins they call a "densha", it doesn't surprise me that portables do well in Japan, esp the DS w/ its strong software backing. The Japanese games for the DS blow away what we get in the West in terms of genres and niche products. Sure, I personally might not be running out to buy a mahjong RPG, but if I was in Japan and bored w/ the "regular" genres of games we get here, I might give something like that a try.
Anyways, given the size of the PS3 and the typical size of a Japanese urban apartment, I'm not surprised either. - Coy0te, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In other news loafs of bread are outselling the DS Lite, With new stock coming in daily local bakers are barely keeping up.
- TorRebe1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In other news, millions more people purchased food instead of a PS3 today, so let's bash the PS3 some more.
- crcurran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Japanese are smart. Why buy a PS3 now when there is barely any games for it and a few bugs still need to be squashed?

Oh, and I just remembered that Digg has it's own spell check tool. Wait to save yourself 5 seconds by skipping the Check Spelling button. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2As mentioned in the comments in the article, oddly they didn't post the pic of Wiis sitting on the shelf.
And there are piles of 360s around too. I guess all 3 consoles are failures in Japan. - 500freestyle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6They also prefer hello kitty to pretty much anything else...
I'll make my own decisions. - skywake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3lets be a bit realistic here
now... I wouldn't get a PS3... but people are stupid and will get one anyway
even if they don't want it... they will get it because its 'cool'
it will sell.....
the DS is going to sell more... because its a popular hand-held
the PS3 is not selling well... but it has nothing to do with the DS
In reality.... this is about where the consoles stand in Japan
#1 DS
#2 Wii
#3 PS3
#4 PSP
#5 PS2
#6 360
#7 GBA
#8 GC

You're wrong - and here's why. The DS and the PS3 are in direct competition for the consumers money and the consumers entertainment time. Theres no if's and or buts to that statement. They are in /direct/ competition for the consumers time and money. This is undeniable -- they are both gaming entertainment devices that want your free time.
The only thing on that list that could be used is a Civic vs a M3. But the comparison is wrong, because the analogy Civic:M3::DS:PS3 isn't true. Unless, despite the M3's obvious superior power, the Civic is more fun to drive, (which its not).
I would say this: Ariel Atom is to an M3 as the DS is to the PS3.
Cheaper and a helluva lot more fun. (http://www.arielmotor.co.uk/04/frames.htm) - mweflen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh My GOD. Someone posted pictures of PS3's on a store shelf! Sell your Sony stock now!!!
L A M E - linkboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm station in Japan (USAF) and I've got a question about the PS3.
Regarding the region-free capabilities, is it up to the developers (like the 360) or will be be like the PSP and DS (where you can just pop in any game and it'll play it).
The reason I'm asking is because if I get a PS3, I'm going to get the 20GB model and its cheaper in Japan then it is in the states. - admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here in florida I've been to 8 walmarts looking for a DS, every single one had at least one ps3, and none of them were sold as bundles.
None of them had ds or wii.. but plenty of 360's (which are well supplied). - chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3But it's true. They LOVE Hello Kitty. The women and some guys anyway.
And we Americans love our boring looking SUVs and the French Canadian love thier nasty poutine, and Native Alaskans love rotten salmon. - hchaudh1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dunno about that and Digg really isn't the place for a question like that. I would say call up Sony or ask on PS3 forums.
- Leo55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, i think the surprise is that it proves that the lite is not JUST a fad which happens so often in Japan. the DS is here to stay.
- EmmSee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is no PS3's around this area... that's why they still sell for over sticker price on eBay.
- Absolute0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Yeah, I'm sure all those debate circles you're part of love to "kritik" each other's arguments.
... - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Doesnt anyone hate Topicality Nazis?
Just asking.
I once had EIGHT T cases against me and my debate partner in Policy Debate. - EatingPie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did people read the article?
This claim of "PS3 Collecting Dust on Shelves" comes from ONE STORE ONLY! The author even admits it at the end of his post.
From the reports I've read, the PS3 is still a total sell-out in Japan, just as in the US. You can sometimes catch them on the shelves in stores, but they don't stay there.
-Pie - shonentokyo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, that sounds about right, my co-worker wanted to get his gf a DS for xmas... every store in the area was having lotteries and raffle tickets....for the right to buy a DS. But of course every store had lots of ps3s, new and used.... Even if the ps3 isn't doing bad here, it certainly could be doing better.
- admirabumblebee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Tampa/st pete here and have been trying to get a DS lite for a few days... so very hard :(
Got some new games, and my old DS (that i got day before release date) finally died... nothing to play my new games on!
ugh. - aerogant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The comparison of how soon the DS sold out versus how soon the PS3 sold out in one store, could mean any number of things, but it does not alone support the claim that NDS was chosen over PS3. That is no different then saying that NDS was chosen over the xbox 360, or the PS2, or even the wii. I mean really, some consumers could have chosen both!!!
The reason why we compare things that are more alike is to reduce the variables. In this case being a portable versus non-portable is another variable, one that can be very strong for some consumers. I mean if a consumer goes into a store to buy a portable, they are really unlikely to walk out with a PS3, which PS3 is not really even a choice in that case. Same with someone who goes into the store wanting to buy a bluray player, then the NDS is not really a choice.
Really the only useful information is gained through surveys, not through instances observed in one store, in which case store dynamics could easily have played out that the NDS was easier to sell out sooner because of arrangement, advertisement, or simply because consumers didn't expect the PS3 to be there, so most went there to buy a NDS instead. Like me myself, I want to get a wii at some point, but I am not even going to try until I can walk into a store and just buy it, I'm not going to wait outside for the store to open. If there were all of a sudden wiis in stores, I would probably not be aware and there fore not contribute to the wii selling out quicker then it's competitors, even though I do want one. - esaks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gunbound on the DS with Wifi.
- JimmyJJWalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Until the PS3 actually has some games out that show it off all the sales to date are just showing how strong the demand is for a real, next-gen system.
Once the fanboys see 1st hand games like heavenly sword, assassins creed, motorstorm, devil may cry 4, and the rest these cheesy mis-infornmation threads will tuck their tail between their legs and stop.
Until then, save up for a real console & hd tv. - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It was my understanding that X-mas is not a very big deal in Japan.
- endekks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Stop rationalizing this by saying "its apples and oranges"."
We'll stop saying that when your camp stops using everything in comparison to the PS3. I'm just waiting to see a new Digg headling "Amazing! More people have breathed in air than bought a PS3! Sony is doomed!"
"Guess what -- at the end of the day you've eaten either an apple or an orange -- you choose between the two and had your meal. It's not about comparing them, it's about choosing between them."
Really? You mean you can't eat both and apple AND an orange? That's funny, because I could have sworn I've had fruit salad which has had apples, oranges and even more fruits in the same cup. Oh, and I also own a DS, and a PS3, and an Xbox, and a 360, and a PS2, and a Wii, and a PSP and some older consoles, too. So yeah, it is about choosing, but not necessarily just "choosing between" because you can own more than one.
"And the DS is most CERTAINLY in competition with the PS3. It's all about getting the consumers money and monopolizing the consumers entertainment time. If people are buying and playing DS's, and not buying and not playing PS3's, than Nintendo is beating Sony. Nintendo DS's are being played and Nintendo is making profits."
Again, while the companies are in competition, that does not mean that just because some people a DS it means that cannot or will not buy a PS3. PS3s are in shorter supply and do cost more, so that will limit purchasing options now, for certain. But this does not mean the situation is permanent for Sony.
"What more do you want? They're in competition, you can compare them, and the DS is a much better machine than the PS3. Nintendo is proving that supercomputers aren't required to have a good time, they're only required for super-fancy graphics. They're also proving super fancy graphics aren't required to have a good time, either."
Being better is grotesquely subjective. I will admit that gameplay and fun are my main concerns for games, but the PS3 and DS are different beasts. The DS is used predominantly for gaming. And while the PS3 focuses a good deal of its usage on gaming, internet usage, and media playback (HD, at that) are also factors which MUST be included if you are going to compare. After all, if things are in competition, then all the details must be looked at thoroughly. The PS3 costs more and is harder to produce because of all the things it can do. And the fact remains, My 50,000 Yen PS3 is also a Blu-Ray player. That might not have any importance to you, but it does to me and other people. I ended up getting a new game system AND a Blu-Ray player for significantly less the cost of strictly media playing Blu-Ray players. I feel like I came out on top in that one. But it doesn't make me enjoy playing my DS or my PSP on the train any less valuable to me.
I suggest you give the near-standardised "contrived dualism" response to anything related to Sony a rest. Seriously.
BTW... This article is marked as inaccurate. I live in Japan and know some people who own PS3s, and some who don't but want one. Yes, more people are buying DS's now, but there IS a drought of PS3's. They are extremely difficult to find. This "Sony is doomed... Laughzorz!" ***** is getting tired. Don't you guys have anything else equally dumb to Digg? - aerogant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The comparison isn't stupid, it's the conclusions drawn from it that can be stupid.
Comparing how well something sold over another, is not a valid way of determining that the DS Lite was chosen over a PS3. For many gamers I am sure that the PS3 wasn't really an option, we are not just talking about merits of the systems in and of themselves (features, games, etc), but also of price and availability. - kenvsryu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i wonder how many corollas sold compared to lamborghinis?
- imdwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the article's bottom line said it best, seeing as most of the commentators, like usual, seemingly haven't read it.
"Granted, this is at one store, so I'd hardly call it a trend. And I'm willing to bet the PS3 still sold out eventually. Rather, take this as another sign that, yes, the DS does print money."
That said, it is interesting that there's still that much demand for the DS Lite after it's been out for an extended period of time. A glimpse of the Wii's future, perhaps? - betterth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stop rationalizing this by saying "its apples and oranges".

What is Digg?
