- dpogni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29some flights now have wireless internet.
- BlackSheepx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Japan gets everything :[
- megashaun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Other people's electronics always seem louder than yours on flights. wtf is up with that?
- LandStander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Hope they offer them with head phones too. I was considerate enough to keep my volume off on my DS the last time I flew. I can't say the same for the little kid behind me with his old GameBoy blasting *****. I was hoping he had a DS so I could pwn him @ some Mario Kart.
- analdisco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Gutting the WiFi is a deal-breaker for me. A whole airplane full of people playing the same DS games as you, and you're not allowed to play together? That's like giving a kid a checkers board and only the red pieces.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You know, that's interesting. What's to prevent a group of people with DSs on a plane from playing against each other surreptitiously? I'm sure it's harmless, but hopefully the airlines don't start banning DSs...
- nphp20, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10He meant the article summary on Digg, not the airline site (which actually appears to have good english).
- mc1123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Man, Japan gets all the luck.
- Demarche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@megashaun
Geeks understand electronic etiquette. - pbaehr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I'm sure they're marked somehow to make it easy to identify them as airline property.
Edit: Damn, beaten to the punch. Now I have to add some extra content...
How long until they start selling ad space on them? "Today's gaming session brought to you by Mitsubishi." - neoian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10neither do we. hooters air went out of business
- Schnep97, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I know, I bring my DS on longer than 4 hour flights and not a single person has informed me about wireless being illegal.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Hey stewardess? Can you fluff my... pillow?"
- NateBalditch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Japan Airlines offers WiFi on its international flights:
http://www.connexionbyboeing.com/index.cfm?p=cbb.serviceavailable&lang=en&Airline=JAL - LandStander, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7There's just something about WiFi on planes that I just don't get. I understand bringing portable gaming systems or books but I just don't see the need to be connected to the internet anywhere and everywhere you go. Maybe it's just me but since Im a comp tech I enjoy the time I get away from computers since I have to deal with them all the time in my everyday life.
I wonder if they offer free WiFi if I go deep-sea fishing.... - Ironman11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm sure the airplane's DS's are plastered with Japanese Airline logos.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7BS! They don't have Hooters Air!!! http://www.hootersair.com/
- 83457, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The DS Lites's WiFi capabilities have been gutted as wireless devices' use is prohibited on planes."
that's too bad...pictochatting on the plane would be entertaining ( o ) ( o ) - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"I understand bringing portable gaming systems or books but I just don't see the need to be connected to the internet anywhere and everywhere you go."
Heh, spoken like a person who is not addicted to digg. - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, I've used WiFi on it too. No problems. I gotta look for that Mythbusters episode about electronics and airplane interference.
- UltraNurd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So if you happen to bring your own DS, do you have to register it with the airline so they don't think you're ganking one?
- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4YOU may not need it on a flight, but there are many people who fly all too frequently that might need to conduct business, especially if it's a long flight. There are some people that spend almost half their week in an airplane, and nowadays, lots of jobs require internet connectivity (for email and such).
- vernsan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I know how you feel all to well. I don't want it around me 24/7.
- Cine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I dunno, I spent almost 24 hours (with layovers) getting from SFO to Norway last week, and I definitely know that having internet on that trip would have made it a lot more enjoyable and less boring.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Damnit. I had to fly Northwest Airlines when I went to Japan. JAL gets all the good stuff. And they have edible foods, too. (No, I'm not complaining about airline food, I'm complaining about Northwest airline food. I loved school food, but sub-tv-dinner-quality 'broccoli stroganoff' with freezer-burnt orange juice should NOT be served to humans!!)
- LandStander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Would you care to share which strip?
- rcomegys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Damn, I'm flying out to Japan in August, but I sure as heck can't afford first class. Maybe I'll just have to buy my OWN DS Lite and play that on the plane.
- LandStander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Ya I realize that.....I'm just glad I'm not one of them...yet.
- RocketMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How is it bad grammar?
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4In the most recent Blue Collar Comedy Tour Bill Engvall talks about how a stewardess went crazy because he was playing on a gameboy, of course he told it in a funny way. There was something weird about a 48 year old man talking about playing on a gameboy, but in a cool way.
- Dhalgren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"I gotta look for that Mythbusters episode about electronics and airplane interference."
Nothing really exciting. Essentially, modern planes are shielded so well that even if there wasa device with an interfering frequency they wouldn't cause problems. They probably know to stay away from 900MHz, 2.4GHz, etc. - DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Given the number od DS's and Ds Lite's sold in Japan, this seems almost like a redundant perk. Most people who would play the DS probably already have their own system on the flight. I know I would.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Sucks alright, sucks on your moms ***** everynight, troll.
- kennyvader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm surprised that the passengers have to give them back. It's only available to First and Executive class passengers, so a $150 console on a ticket costing a few thousand $$$? Sure they could get them direct from Nintendo (or do some sort of promo partnership) such that they only cost $75 and then let the passengers keep them. Would still cost the airline next to nothing in the grand scheme of things, but think of the promotional power. Sure beats being able to keep the crappy headset.
- Dan™, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've always wondered if a wi-fi connection can really cause sufficient enough interference to make a plane crash.
- Thisco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like the idea. For me and my fear of flight anything which can distract me even for a moment is a godsend.
There's only one thing which is annoying: precisely during take-off and landing ( the moments when many passengers are anxious and I just about pass out :-( ) I'm not allowed to use my DS or PSP... - tforcram, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lack of morals?! You need to spend some more time in Japan my friend. Certainly the morals are different than the US, but they certainly have them. In a lot of ways I would even say they have more morals than we do. For instance, the complete lack of interest in FPS's in Japan is really quite refreshing sometimes. The fact that they have all the new tech is just icing on the cake.
- achantra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad you've got to be flying business class or first class to get to use the DS. for the price to upgrade from coach on an LAX-Tokyo flight you could buy about 20 DS units.
- FreydNot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WiFi and wireless play are two different thing. I wonder if they gutted both of them.
- INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I didn't read the comments yet, but could you imagine the fun you could have with a couple copies Mario Kart DS and wireless?
- TestFar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5which member of gnaa are you?
- lennon2600, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2ahh, Digg really takes you back to grammar school days, doesn't it? Good stuff.
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Nice advertisement for JAL and Nintendo, but is this really such a big deal? It's only available until the end of August, and you have to be travelling First or Executive class.
Then again, this sounds about right for First/Executive class... pay heck-knows-how-many-times the economy ticket price for a few minor "luxuries" and half-an-hour in the Executive lounge before takeoff, and get the company to pay for it.
And one of those grossly overpriced frills (*if* you ask for it and *if* you fly before the end of August) is a couple of hours with a toy which you could pick up elsewhere for US$150, still take on the flight (provided you turn the WiFi off) and *keep* afterwards. How much more are you paying for First class? I bet if you take the difference and divide it up in a reasonable manner, it works out at more than $150. Even if they were offering this in economy, it'd still be little more than a Nintendo promo. Nice frill, but not worth paying for. - Angelus2k6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy Carp what wrong with JAL and safety I have not heard anything in Australia. I have a flight to Tokyo with JAL an onto the UK in mid July!! What's going on with them?
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've Pictochatted on flights multiple times... The ban is *****.
- matatabe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, JAL is in pretty dire straights in terms of their perceived safety and public image. A simple googling would turn up all of their recent safety gaffes that have been big big news here in Japan. Plus they are ridiculously overpriced to boot.
- athlonmj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1way to not actually read the article before commenting
*grumble* comment whores *grumble* - Morph_Ball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quit trolling all over the floor. Somebody has to clean that up...
- Dabellah, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"The description for this article has bad grammar."
Isn't the statement supposed to read:
"The description OF this article has bad grammar." ? - InvisiblebiRON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Brings me back to that strip on Penny Arcade...
