- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3>Temporary law licenses are supposed to be temporary. He lives in FLORIDA not ALABAMA. No Digg.
There's no such thing as a "temporary" license to practice law in a state. Instead there's a thing called Pro Hac Vice.
Pro Hac Vice is when you are licensed to practice in one state, but are practicing in another. You have to apply for Pro Hac Vice status in the state where you're practicing, and it's usually just a matter of filling out an application and paying a fee. There's not often any kind of review, sort of thing, short of making sure that you're actually licensed in the state you claim to be licensed in. Getting it revoked like this would be pretty much the same thing as having your "license" revoked, since you can't practice in that state anymore. Sometimes there are limitations on it, like you can only be involved in two cases a year, etc.
The judge revoked his Pro Hac Vice status, which is newsworthy. Basically, it's the judge's way of slapping the man down for his actions. Having your Pro Hac Vice status being revoked for cause would be the equivalent of getting your license to practice revoked, if you were in your home state. It also means that it's a lot more likely that the Florida bar will revoke the guy's license to practice too, if they're reviewing him. One judge found his actions bad enough to smack hell out of him for it, the bar will probably decide in the same way. - ConfusedONE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Further news: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6140117.html
- ConfusedONE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Judge Moore employed quite stern language in his ruling. His remarks include, "Mr. Thompson's actions before this Court suggest that he is unable to conduct himself in a manner befitting practice in this state."
He pretty much just lost his temporary license in Alabama. One state down 49 to go.
If you want to read the story, it is also on the LiveJournal site:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/gamepolitics/134653.html - PoVRAZOR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks for that clarification Otto. So I'm guessing he lives/pratices in Alabama, otherwise it's only just a friendly kick in the nuts.
- gavdana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course, the problem is that it only takes a pulse, a pint of gin, and a third grade education to get a law license in Alabama. Still, thanks Alabama!
- meshgiath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a tease! The digg title got me all worked up.... but it was quite misleading.
He didn't get it revoked, it was simply suggested by someone who may be able to get it done that it be done =-) - tifosiv122, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Title: Jack Thompson gets his Law License in Alabama REVOKED!!!
If he had a license in Alabama he wouldn't have needed Pro Hac Vice.
No digg...1L - kherrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The story seemed to make it sound like the Judge had an issue with Jack Thompson though it doesn't seem to explain what it was, however it did mention,
"...Judge Moore excoriated Thompson's professional conduct, and rejected his attempt to withdraw from the case. Instead, the Judge revoked Thompson's Pro Hac Vice admission..."
That's odd, it reads as if it were like the Judge's girlfriend broke up with him, and before he accepted it... the Judge said... "No, I break up with you!" - lotus22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg Effect already.
- CardinalFang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The link doesn't work! >_
- blackmesa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2He didn't get his licence revoked. He was just removed from a particular case.
A case he would have had to step down from anyway because he intends to give evidence (IIRC).
Still, I guess its good news. - Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Yup, you're right. I'm a lifelong resident and I'm still amazed at the level of brain damage in this state."
Hey hey hey, just because the entire state has declared a four day weekend because of the alabama-auburn game doesn't mean we're brain damaged. - dragoonz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The title is wrong. His license wasn't revoked, he was just thrown off a case.
- dramatools, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can't quit--- you're fired!
blackmesa: "He didn't get his licence revoked. He was just removed from a particular case"
Effectively, yes. He is still a member of the Florida Bar, but will not be allowed to practice law in Alabama as visiting counsel. This incident may also be taken into consideration should Thompson decide to apply to the Alabama Bar to practice here regularly.
thenik: "[Alabama] is ***** up enough."
Yup, you're right. I'm a lifelong resident and I'm still amazed at the level of brain damage in this state. - Antz0rz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The oppressive anti-everything unholy nazi (..irony?) just got a big slap in the face. Nice.
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What a loser.
Even if he were to be disbarred in every state, I bet he'd still be convinced he's correct. - CountZero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While reading Jackie Boy's response, I got this picture in my head of a vein in Jack's forehead bulging prominently as he heard the judges response.
It is my foremost conclusion that the most negligent person in this whole affair is... Jack's doctor. All these tirades, and getting shot down and all that can't be helping the man's blood pressure. Jack's getting up there too. One of these days he's doing to burst a blood vessel in the court room, or maybe have a heart attack during one of his rants. Seriously, his doctor needs to recommend he take a vacation in a cabin in the woods or something, some place where he can't follow any video-game related news. Because, as amusing as it might be to read about Jack dropping dead from a heart attack in mid-rant, it probably wouldn't help the gaming community any. It might even turn the bastard into a martyr. - Luftwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Immuture editorializing + Completely innacurate headline + Overuse of exclamation points = Reported for lameness

- AUGTRON, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ everyone who makes fun of leet speak
Every critic of leet speak i have seen has known how to type in this language , therefore that means they must know it, and consequently learned it, which leads me to believe they, at one point in time, thought it was cool. Which means in turn, you guys are making fun of yourselves. One of the rare times a "geek news" story comes to the front page, you guys And girls immediately look for something else to bash upon. You are the ones who should be calming down.
and @ Diadem specifically,
I have never seen anything so incomprehensible in my entire life, and never ever seen a comment like that on Digg. - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, it's only a temporary license in Alabama. Nonetheless, TAKE THAT YOU JABBERING LUNATIC!
- Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, he can still practice law in that state so long as he has an in-state friend who will "assist" him.
- Diadem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No kidding, this is supposed to be a Geek news site (err, social news network :), not a news site for 13 year old hyperactive kids...
I agree Jack Thompson is quite uncouth, but theres no need to say "_|4(|{ 7|-|0|/|p$0|| 907 p//||3Ð, 7|-|47 ||421, £0£"
Seriously, you guys don't look cool doing it, calm down. - Bren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good for somebody to put him in his place finally!
Also this just needs to be said- in all my years of 'IT', I still haven't figured out what "pwned/pwn3ed" means. So why don't we make our comments readable to the general community....and help a brotha out and explain it to me =s - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Thanks for that clarification Otto. So I'm guessing he lives/pratices in Alabama, otherwise it's only just a friendly kick in the nuts."
No, he lives and mostly practices in Florida. However, any time a lawyer gets the equivalent of being "disbarred" for improper behavior, well, that ain't good for him.
This is a kick in the nuts, yes, but it really isn't "friendly" any way you look at it. It may not have immediately obvious impact, but reputation among your peers is a big part of the lawyer's world. Jack just got dealt a severe blow to his reputation among other lawyers. - Bren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not that you were spicifically referring to me. I just wanted to know what it meant!!!
- Mysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@bren
It's probably been explained by the time that I click "submit", but pwned is the typo form of owned. It's not a computer term, it's a game term typically used in MMORPGs or first person shooters when massively over powering and consequently squshing an opponent.
As for the rest of it, it's good to see him get slapped down. Don't need all of the cussing and such in my opinion but this news gives me a grin as well.
~Mysk - RpgActioN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I believe he's got some sense and is a somewhat just person, regardless of his views....
"The other side wants to make me the issue," he told GamePolitics at the time. The important thing is that the clients be served."
We all know that is the truth but the fact that he is open minded enough to accept it is at least something. - dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well put Otto.
Anything that smacks down this guy, I am for... - Bren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Augtron, I wasn't making fun of leet speak (oddly enough I"ve never heard that term either)> there was indeed a day I used all the shorthand I knew in chat rooms, but I outgrew that phase a long time ago. I was just thinking that it serves me much better to use plain english in my work all the time, and therefore making fun of how much I don't understand now that I don't use it any more! I mean really, had I jsut looked at the keyboard for a couple of seconds, I might have figured out that pwned=owned. =S
- lebowski419, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Having Thompson removed from the case is great! Having him refered to the disciplinary panel of the Alabama state bar is even better. However, his license is not revoked in the state...it is only up for review. The next couple of months should be interesting.
- mark1372, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, excess exclamation marks, l337speak, anime smileys ^_^ and all caps again. Digg is turning into friggin' grade school. Ponderous.
- Bren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks Mysk. Maybe if I spent more time on mmorps Id have figured it out. GUess it's not so obvious while I'm preventing stupid users from downloading malware on a corp. network. Oh I wish I could spend my days pwn'ing people, hehe
- PiReX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0one state down 49 left now hopefully the other 15% of the US will realize hes a pompass jackass
- Niloy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That ***** deserved it!
No, he deserved worse. - mspencer712, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Temporary law licenses are supposed to be temporary. He lives in FLORIDA not ALABAMA. No Digg.
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"For his part, Thompson has responded with an angry letter to Alabama's Judicial Inquiry Commission, questioning Judge Moore's ethics. Thompson's letter begins:
"I have had the disturbing experience of appearing before the above jurist in a high-profile wrongful death action, Strickland v. Sony... In my opinion, Judge Moore has violated...the Alabama Canons of Judicial Ethics by his unfortunate, improper, and prejudicial acts in this case, at the expense of three bereaved Alabama families.""
I'm not the bad lawyer, you're a ***** judge!
Regardless of his anti-video game antics, anyone can see the man is a ***** simply by his words and actions. Still, if he does get disbarred in Florida (and we can only hope, the world has enough lawyers as it is, might as well cut out the ones least capable of forming a coherent argument without resorting to Ad Hominems) I want to see his response, every last word.
It will be comedy gold. - aresef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Ohhhhhh SNAP.
