I personally like Jack Thompson... he always lets me know what games I will like. - longhair, on 11/07/2007, -4/+215I have been playing John Madden football for over ten years. Guess I'll leave my current job for the NFL. If Jack is right, and we know he always is, I'm ready for real NFL action. I'm 6 foot tall and a massive 170 pounds. But I've been "training" for the past ten years, so I guess I'm ready.
- Renton, on 11/07/2007, -1/+161If video games can train you to be good at something, than this guy obviously needs to try out Phoenix Wright.
- Azimuth1, on 10/11/2007, -4/+141Anyone else bored of this by now?
- gamebittk, on 10/11/2007, -6/+73"The next thing he'll be saying is that Mario intices children to take drugs, and kill turtles..."
Comment taken from where I found this story: http://www.wiicade.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3343 - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+68someone should make a sex game where you use the Wiimote as a dick. that'll distract everyone long enough to release as much realistic violent stuff as you want.
- kkaabboomm, on 10/11/2007, -3/+58OBJECTION!
- Dumbledorito, on 10/11/2007, -0/+50I owe my multi-platinum CD sales to the hours I've spent playing "Guitar Hero."
- chicken101, on 10/11/2007, -1/+40and I'm a pro at nation building and war strategy.
- mageofdeath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+34how can he call this a murder trainer, and totally not say anything about cooking mama, that bitch is out to kill...
- Natetendo83, on 10/11/2007, -2/+36I agree, kids shouldn't play this game. But don't say it shouldn't be our business. Most of society is smart enough to know that killing in a game doesn't mean kill for real...perhaps not everyone got that memo years ago.
- Nogger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32If you want to learn how to kill somebody, just turn on the TV.
- NeoSporin, on 10/11/2007, -3/+30I actually thought about that once...
I thought about it for a long time.. - mattmcm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+27I read the title and just laughed. Jack doesn't have, and probably never will have, a clue. Gamers don't kill people. Psychopaths and those driven way off the edge do.
- felidaeus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25Wait a second, didn't he get into a lawsuit with take two, and got a court order prohibiting him from saying anything about manhunt 2?
Am I missing something? Or is he just totally screwed right now?
http://digitalunrestcomic.com/index.php?date=2007-06-04 - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+28My 8 year old daughter and I are going to have so much fun playing this game.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24HOLD IT >:(
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+25Why Jack Thompson doesnt ever point to religion as violent ideology is beyond me.
- chicken101, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20It doesn't take a rocket scientist to kill someone. It's a matter of if you will do it or not. Everyone already knows how to do it.
- InuX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19in that case, i am a certified hit-man.
- PickledJesus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16I'm world high jump champion after I have my mushrooms.
- greenblob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15Well, I'm a certified Pokemon Trainer!
- Zarxrax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16The Wii has parental controls. There is absolutely no reason that there even needs to be discussions about government regulation on a wii game. It is the parent's job to set limits for their children, end of discussion.
- mv10, on 10/11/2007, -7/+21Who the hell is Jack Thompson and why does Digg keep giving him publicity.
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16Can we PLEASE stop giving this guy attention?
- flessa, on 10/11/2007, -5/+19I cant wait for Crysis on DirectX10 to release. Then Jack will ***** his pants.
- Murdats, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15hmm, now I have never killed anyone before, but if I felt so compelled to, I beleive a bullet to the face would do the trick
however guns are scarce here in australia (its them damn gun laws, arent they supposed to be completly ineffective?)
so my next bet would be a heavy object, swung with force, repeatedly until desired effect is achieved.
I dont need a game to tell me people are squishy - t4ll3y, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Guns don't kill people, I do.
Hopefully you've all played Postal 2. - mrASSMAN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13uh.. doesn't he call every video game a murder training simulation or something similar?
- schoate09, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12***** Jack Thompson!
- excaza, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14"What the hell is the deal with there being two separate categories for graphic games too? What actually changes between the ages of 17 (M for Mature) and 18 (AO for Adults Only) that warrants the upgrading of any game to that status?"
valid point, the distinction is really so vague (even though they toss in INTENSE into the AO rating) that it's pretty much a tossup between the two. From the ESRB site:
M - "Titles in this category may contain intense violence, blood and gore, sexual content and/or strong language."
AO - "Titles in this category may include prolonged scenes of intense violence and/or graphic sexual content and nudity."
Again, basically only intense games can be AO, M games just aren't intense enough, although I think the one clear difference would be the nudity...but if you buy a game for nudity you're not smart.
"Digg me down for speaking out against your stupid constitution"
Don't be a moron, this has nothing to do with our constitution, however stupid you think it may be. - reed311, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12Hmm, I wonder what he thinks of people going to basic training in the military... If that isn't a murder training device, I don't know what is.
- sherbetboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11The problem isn't us paying attention to him. We already know that what he's saying is *****, so we can just move on. But what about people that don't know anything about video games? What about people like "Dr." Phil and Oprah and nearly every news anchor in the country who know next to nothing about video games? If we ignore him, he won't go away, he'll go to every news source he can get in contact with and go on the air spouting off all the ***** he wants and the hosts who know nothing about video games will most likely agree with him on all the points he said. Pissed off soccer mom at home watching calls other moms in the area, and so on until it's a new movement like that stupid anti tobacco ***** on TV, except instead of Tobacco, they are talking about the cold evil people at Rockstar or valve. People will listen to ***** blindly if they don't know any better, which is why it's better to bring all the negative attention to him while we can. Otherwise, Thompson can spread like wildfire.
- realyst, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Oh would the legal system be so much better if the judge were to take away one of five exclamation points every time you're an idiot in court until it's game over....
- logicalnoise, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10isn't this idiot under a court order not to publically harass take 2 and their games and not harrass take 2's advertising partners?
- psi0nicgh0st, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9If the US Military used the Wii for combat/murder training, we'd get out asses handed to us by the Busy World of Richard Scary. So I highly doubt that Jacko's claim has any standing....which leads me to the belief that....
THIS MAN HAS NO PENIS - Synn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10So apparently I've trained to be a vampire hunter, criminal, block mover, doctor, young man to save the world with a motley crew of characters, plumber, gorilla, race car driver, hedgehog, bounty hunter, dancing agent, etc.
Can I put that on a resume? - nexah3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9From all the violent games I've played throughout my life, I should be a raging psychopath by now.
- jakobahman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Is it bad that my first thought when reading that headline was: "SWEET!!"?
- Hetman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9This is defiantly true. I played just finished beating Guitar hero 2. Strangely enough def jam records has just offered me a million dollar record deal.
- Dan11023, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9murder training device? good to know, i'll be sure to pick one up now. dugg.
- Foamator, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9I... put on my robe and wizard hat?
- fataluber, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Phoenix Wright FTW!
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Quote: "Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum talked about the game's Wii version requiring players to slash and stab using the Wiimote"
Oooo that sounds like fun to me. - Hellmark, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Yes, yes he is. I can't wait till Take 2 bitchslaps his ass for violation of that court order.
- t4ll3y, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I'm pretty sure that only blocked him from filing suits against take 2 in order to stop games from being released. He's still allowed to speak out against them.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Jack Thompson really is horrible, but not for the reasons people think. He is a bad lawyer who found out he could make more money looking for contreversy and swaying social conservatives to pay him to hunt down windmills for them. I like lawyers and the law, and might even become one some day, but this small subset of lawyers gives the rest a horrible reputation. I bet when these people go home, they couldn't give a rats ass about video games, and also predict one of two of their interns writing the reports to be used to attack violent games play them themselves. Then again, as an engineering intern once I worked with some DRM technology even though I hate DRM, so I might be a bit hypocritical...
- Blah_Blah_Blah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7He needs to try brain age.... but i dont think that game really corrects mental issues =[
- rheaume, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Ok, i'll play devil's advocate
Longhair:
"I have been playing John Madden football for over ten years. Guess I'll leave my current job for the NFL. If Jack is right, and we know he always is, I'm ready for real NFL action."
No but you know the rules right? You know the tactics right? If I took you and your Madden online crew and setup a game of football between you guys and a bunch of African kids who had never played, who would win? Even if you are skinny or fat or super sensitive to the sun, Im pretty sure you would win 100-0. Now if I gave you a gun, would you have a better idea what to do with it than if you never fired one before? Or had to use it in a combat situation, hiding behind cover, loading at appropriate times?
/Game developer - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Wii Sports can also be a violent game... I mean it's teaching me how to swing a bat well. That ball used in hitting could very well be a head later on. So I think Wii Sports should be banned. And Mario Party games, cause it's encouraging kids to party... these parties could very well likely have alcohol. Nintendo isn't for kids anymore! **Gasp!?**
