- goatrandy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+80 No THIS is a suit with some sense. It's a pity that in this day and age, business often forgets that you don't have to 'beat' the other guy in order to 'win'.
Just make a good product, and people will buy it. If the other guy has a good product also, than people will buy both. - Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." - Mohandas Gandhi
I think his statement matches quite nicely onto the console market, first Sony didn't say a thing about Nintendo, then they mocked the Wii controller by calling it a "gimmick", in Q4 of 2006 they will be "fighting" with Nintendo, indirectly, and hey I think Nintendo will win! ;) - Variz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29Simple:
Quality > Quantity
Nintendo has come to know this. - PDAIsAOk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26From a consumer's standpoint, we don't care if they beat Sony or Microsoft either. Just as long as they make enough money to make investors happy, and make games and gameplay fun enough to make gamers happy.
- Insane40k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Because back then Nintendo was a different company. Satoru Iwata became a president right after Gamecube was released and the first thing he is fully in charge of is Nintendo DS.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Actually both Sony and Microsoft has endorsed Nintendo to compliment their own, and to fight the other. A more accurate saying would be "the enemy of my enemy is my friend"
- Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22If your mind isn't at least partially open to the possibilities of games being fun without the mass killing, then believe me, you are far from mature.
- Dog_Paddle, on 10/12/2007, -15/+30Nintendo is just to ***** cool.
Why weren't they like this when they marketed the Gamecube? - koweja, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18They learned from their mistakes. Business remake their images in order to appeal to a broader or different audience more often than teenagers.
- Tsuroerusu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14"I dont get why nintendo didnt get this back with the game cube, it was the same situation then but they were just lacking something, the innovation that they have with the wii. I cant wait to see where they go with this."
I think this big change of Nintendo, comes from the big change of president. Nintendo's current president, Satoru Iwata, is not some kind of office *****, he started showing great interest in video games very early on in his life and he has a major in computer science. Iwata joined Nintendo after the development of the GameCube started, so I don't think he was involved in all of that process.
I could be wrong about this, but I think it's interesting that Nintendo started to change quite rapidly after Satoru Iwata became president of Nintendo. - CoolDude330, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11"Just make a good product, and people will buy it. If the other guy has a good product also, than people will buy both."
I doubt people will be able to afford anything if they get a PS3... - elamr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Satoru marketed the hell out of the DS because first time I saw it and some its lame games, I was thinking "Another Sega Game Gear.. how sad". G4 even took some cheap shots at it, but now lots of people are praising it. They must have done something right.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14He has said this many times before
- m.sandstorm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Resident Evil 4 (best of the RE games) and Killer 7 were too kiddie for you? I'm afraid to find out what you consider mature.
- masonreloaded, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Agreed, and often in business focusing on QUALITY in the first place will give you a bigger QUANTITY of sales in the long run...
- heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9And they don't care because they are profitable. Something MS can't say yet, and I am unaware of how much profit the PS is making for Sony.
- cmckinla, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Considering both MS and Sony both consider the Wii as a second console to companion their own, I wouldn't be worried about "winning" if I were Iwata either.
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12The reason they don't care is because they are in a whole different league from the others. I still have friends that go back and play their old Nintendo consoles from time to time. Nintendo realizes what gamers want because THEY ARE A GAMING COMPANY. We tend to forget what the other two "big" buys are _really_ about.
- djtodd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10When I first got wind of the Wii's specs I thought, "Whoa...now I know they want to focus on content, but this is insane...how will they hold a candle to the MS and Sony beheamoths?"
Now, however, it all makes sense. They have an inexpensive, innovative, and "fun" console with a ton of developer support and, apparently, they have created their own little niche market. Very, very shrewd. - millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7For generations after generations, even before Sony (ever since Sega was their rival), Nintendo has been making the most profits even if their system was not the top seller. For the handheld market, they've ALWAYS been the top seller. For consoles, they won with the NES, there have been a few months when Genesis was beating SNES but SNES ultimately came out first, and the N64 and Gamecube were not the top sellers in their generations... however, they've always made the most profit in these cases.
They've also won over the older gamer with more artistic or intellectual needs, as their unique titles are often more intellectually stimulating than the latest crime sandbox such as GTA. Games like the WarioWare series and other titles (especially for the DS) have won BACK former gamers who have decided to stop playing videogames. They also always make the best versions of Tetris.
In addition to this, ever since the NES, Nintendo has had the monopoly on the child market while also holding a respectable about of older gamers. Nintendo's characters and first party software are the industry's most recognizable, and they've made as many children happy as Disney has, perhaps more so.
A person who's NEVER played videogames could tell you who Mario is. They could not, however, tell you who Solid Snake, Cloud or Master Chief are.
If that's not "winning", I don't know what is. - tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@elnerdo:
Good hardware does not a good game make. That's pretty much the core of the Wiivolution's philosophy. - monkeyrun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8in other news....
Iwata: 'Of course crushing them would be sweet' - handshakedrugs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@oGMo
Of course they want to make money. DUH. What was said is that they are a gaming company, and a gaming company only. However, neither Sony or MS are exclusively gaming companies, and entered the market relatively late, compared to Nintendo (even though they weren't even the first). I've never heard anyone say that Nintendo doesn't want to make money, but I don't see them trying to make money beyond the gaming industry - which is one of the reasons you'll probably never see Nintendo make a console at a loss. - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Supply chains. Japan exhibits heavy demand for the colors (they were released there white only first) and giving us the white versions first will allow them to sell the colored ones there exclusively for a little while longer.
The only factor that delayed the DS's release here was the demand for it in Japan, Nintendo said so. - beforeIforget, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think Nintendo still has the "kiddie" stigma and will probably continue to have it for a long time. Games like Mario, Zelda, etc have colors, characters, and themes that are normally reserved for a younger audience. It's where Nintendo targets their product. Nothing wrong with it since it continues to make them money - especially on the handhelds. For older gamers some of these titles are a nice diversion from the current FPS blood and guts scene which is why I think the Wii is attractive to many. These titles tend to induce a fair bit of nostalgia to a time when gaming was a bit simpler (and less realistically violent).
I don't see the Wii changing a hardcore gamer's perspective. If anything, the kiddie stigma will stay. Nintendo is abandoning the hardcore gamer and going all-out on the casual and non-gamer type. It's a gamble for sure, but Nintendo thinks it'll payoff. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nintendo was very wise to stay out of the Sony/MS arms race. That was a war they could not win. They seem to be adopting the Apple strategy: Focus on doing your own thing, do it well and sit back and watch the media fall all over themselves to kiss your mushroom.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"Why weren't they like this when they marketed the Gamecube?"
Three words: Reggie Fils-Aime - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Isn't this the first time we have a console war with all three competitors practically proclaiming the (declaredly) non-competing winner?
- Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Obviously, everyone has different tastes, but to say that you have to like GTA, MGS, etc. to be a hardcore gamer is complete *****. A hardcore gamer is simply someone that truly enjoys, no, *loves*, playing games. Age-appropriateness of content has nothing to do with it.
Please explain how someone who enjoys*insert game of choice* is not a hardcore gamer? It does not compute. Fun is fun. - m.sandstorm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Even though Sony and MS will be ahead in techonology it will be Nintendo's creativity and inovation with exsisting technology that will ensure they will stay in the game for a very long time. It's their desire to create a quality and afforable product that prevents them (for the most part) from making big business mistakes.
- Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pabster has a pretty good point.
Without a hard drive they can concentrate on other functions and not worry so much about the costs and fees involved. Later on when hard drives become even smaller and less expensive they can opt for putting one in their next console at a fraction of the price Sony and MS will be using. - AeonTorpor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They didn't have to "beat" MS or Sony with the Gamecube, and they still are the only ones making a profit off of the hardware. What makes you think they care if they "beat" them? They still get rich(er). Just because you are all ego and Mr. macho and have to blindly compete with everything that walks doesn't mean Nintendo has the same approach to their market.
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nintendo is smart. Very smart.
Keep the traditional price point (around $200 for a new console system). They decided to forego HD support (which costs quite a bit in equipment and licensing fees) and I think time will vindicate that decision (despite the grumblings...). After all, you don't REALLY need a $5,000 plasma TV running HDMI from your console to experience a good time.
I see Nintendo crushing the competition with Wii. - handshakedrugs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@elnerdo
I think as a business, of course, they are always going to go for quantity. But I think what's going on here, is that they are going for quality first, then letting the quantity part just kind of happen. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's no way they cant win with the price point they are starting at with such innovation!

http://www.wii-volution.com - apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1beaten out? care to explain how a non released console has beaten out its competitors; one of which isnt released yet either?
- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Things changed dude. Check your local seller for Gamecube titles.
- apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1millixaw, you had me until you mentioned "versions of tetris". =) the gameboy bundled version was and will always be the best.
i'll still digg you tho... - Gaiden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I usually really hate keywords that pop up in the industry , but in this case I've taken hook line and sinker to 'disruption'. Nintendo is showing they now how to think outside the box , and are so sure of themselves giving people what they want that they'll stick it out even when people are ridiculing them. DS underpowered compared to the PSP , but penetrating markets the PSP will never touch. Wii gimmeky control , didn't seem like the people at E3 minded :)
- Kappa00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When a company doesn't compete, the prices of their products either goes up due to the company having no competition OR they fail because their competition they decided not to compete with is simply better. Nintendo was competing with Sony and Microsoft. This is why the Wii and DS have come about. Nintendo needed something soo innovative that it would help them reclaim the throne. Now Nintendo has captured the innovation and beaten out Sony and Microsoft so Nintendo needs not to compete anymore. This is why Microsoft and Sony have been pushing the purchase of their consoles in tandem with the Wii.

- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"maybe nintendo learn stop neglecting the adult maybe we buy there nintendo console this time around."
What's funny is that most adults who play games mostly like the fun, recreational titles like Mario and Nintendo Sports. It's the kiddies reaching pueberty (13 - 17 year olds) who care about playing Grand Theft Auto. It makes their penises feel bigger. - Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sensationalist (and misleading) headline aside, I find it amusing that this story is currently on the front page too:
http://www.digg.com/software/Gates:_We_will_crush_Google_just_like_we_crushed_Netscape_ - nOOBert, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Even though Sony and MS will be ahead in techonology"
Hrmmm... Nintendo has never been about cutting edge graphics. It has always been about game play and good content. Now the Wii's control head of MS and Sony techonology wise. The videos and screens form the new Zelda look pretty damn good to me. Plus, most games will all look the same anyways because if you play them on a NON-HDTV the quality can only be so good.
I would have to say the only thing that MS and Sony may be Nintendo on as far as techonology goes is graphics and even that is debateable imho. :) - anamanaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Seems like a good strategy. Milk your base (rabid Nintendo fanboys) and retain 3% of the market with absorbent profit margins.
Hurray for Nintendo! - mistergosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Besides, the price is a "Hell yeah!" for us third-worlders :D
- nOOBert, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Nintendo has had their own nitch. They hold a part of the market. They have never tried to be anything other then nintendo. They have often stated this, That they are happy with the part of the market they own. With that said their earnings are geart. They make money and IIRC the amount they make has been going up over the years.
IMHO when a company doesnt compete is when cool things happen. Example: the Wii, the DS. Nintendo has a better quality product in terms of hardware issues and I like to think in terms of game play and games.
Correct me if i am wrong but I think they are the only ones out of the 3 ( PS, MS, and Nintendo) to NOT lose money when a console gets sold. I think both the Xbox360 and PS loose 100+ bucks on every sale of a unit.
I will proabaly getting a Wii. There are some great games comming out. - tubetop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I think this is a good strategy. Companies should just stick to doing what they do best. The sales will come :) Many good companies have stuck to this strategy with great success.
