- anymir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38Do you realize that the iTunes Store is only a small part of iTunes? I use iTunes to play music acquired elsewhere, and I'm sure others do too. Please educate yourself.
- thehigherlife, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31iTunes is a media player / music jukebox. Sure it has a store, but that isn't its only feature. Quit flaming for no reason.

Yeah Why would I want to go PAY for anything, next time I need a new computer, TV, whatever, why don't I just conveniently go to your house and just drop it in a nice study bag and drag it away with me.
You can say that $1 a song is too expensive, you can rant about RIAA all you want. If you don't like it or think it is too expensive then don't support it. Insulting people because they think it is a decent deal and are willing to pay that price doesn't do anything but make you look like the idiot. - yohan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You make a little sense, but this isn't an official thing, and it actually costs..

Dude, a lot of people are able to do exactly what they want to do with the music they got from iTunes. These people want to put music on their computer, put that music on their iPod, and maybe burn a CD for their car. I'm pretty sure that iTunes was designed to do all of that and then some.
These people don't care that their music is "strewn" into an easily understood file system with obvious directory hierarchies. They don't need to touch the files. The iTunes software knows exactly where these files are and, if you don't like the default location, you can always change the root folder.
DRM only matters to people who, for starters, know what DRM stands for. These people aren't hurting you or themselves. They like their music in an easy to use format. If you like .ogg and torrents, then you should probably be using those. The only reason you can be pissed at people who use iTunes is that they don't give you anymore seeds for your pirating client of choice.
Just let them do their thing and you can do yours. - Elric1977, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The idiot thinks iTunes is just a store? AND he doesn't even know how to drag and drop in it!? I smell a Mac hater, aka Mac Virgin.

- sinurgy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@thehigherlife and anymir
You're totally right but I'd like to point out this confusion is due to Apple's intentionally ambiguous marketing of "iTunes". They want the masses to see them as inseperable.
@ohearn
If you somehow possess the ability to simply touch my computer and create an identical copy of my computer, you are more than welcome to then take that copy home with you.
Yeah I know it's more complicated then that but I get tired of hearing people use the "how about I come steal your...insert personal item...from you and see how you like it" argument as if it's even remotely the same thing. it doesn't get any better than this - shrader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use Slimserver. It doesn't integrate into iTunes, it builds its own library, but it will stream to any device on your network that can open an HTTP stream or page:

- torifile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"Using iTunes/iPod:

Maybe this is how an iPod works in bizarro iTunes hater world, but for the rest of us, here's the way an iPod *really* works:
1) Plug it in.
2) There is no step 2.
Have you ever used an iPod? It does it all for you. If you've got more music than space on the iPod, you've got to select the music you want once and go from there. If you want complete control, you can manually sync it, but there's only 1 required step. - cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2your absolutely right that there are other music download sites, but what do you use to transfer music on to the iPod.. aren't you forced to use iTunes, or am I wrong on this.
- jasz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5goddamn i want a Wii :(
- DigiMaso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can tell you exactly where my music is.
c:music
And guess what... I use iTunes to organize my files.
There is nothing more obscene than a folder with 70,000+ mp3s all named 'Artist - album - song title.mp3'
How about using iTunes and using subfolders? 'c:musicBandAlbum' This way, when you want to send someone an album, or the discography, you can find the folder fast and easy.
And guess what? I use Demonoid, soulseek, and torrentspy for almost everything I have. And people on SoulSeek appreciate the fact that my library is very well organized. - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2DigiMaso you have GOT to be ***** me with this one:
"How about using iTunes and using subfolders? 'c:musicBandAlbum'"
Yeah... because I need iTunes to make a subfolder.
I couldn't organize my music like you have described without iTunes.
What I was really aiming at though is people who use the "My Shared Folder"
from 8 different programs used to download music and run a search of their
machine to put them all into an iTunes playlist... Anyway I'm assuming that
was a joke you were making because you cannot be so stupid as to believe
that you need iTunes to organize music into subfolders - but anything's possible. - chrisw357, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hi. I'm a Mac fanboy, so go ahead and flame on!
Now that I got that out of the way, I'll say... yes, I love Apple, I love the whole iTunes+iTMS+iPod combination. It works for me and if it works for others, well, great. If not, that's ok... If you need to use an alternative, that's cool, just don't bash us fanboys for liking things simple. Speaking of alternatives to transferring songs to iPods:
http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20050816_sync_ipod_with_windows_media_player_10.html
Pay attention to the "XPlay" suggestion. Back to the iTunes thing, one digger pointed out that it's for idiots who can't organize their music. Well, I guess I'm an idiot, but you can turn off the "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" options in the Advanced settings. I used to have them off, but I turned them on because I like to keep things simple. And, yes, you can move your music around (with those options off) anywhere you want, even the nasty DRM'd tracks. You just have to let iTunes know where you moved the files, that's all. iTunes is just like any other piece of software that references other files. Oh, and as ~torifile~ said, there is NO step 2, if you have the iPod set to automatically synch with your library and iTunes set to open when the iPod is connected.
BACK TO THE SUBJECT AT HAND: As soon as I get the Wii, this software will be the first haxie on the list! Looks promising! Will have to wait for fundage, though. Money's gone with Christmastime and all... and I just bought a new IPOD! :P - ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Elric1977 said: "...I plug it in, drag the songs I bought or pirated, or ripped, to it, and in seconds they are there for the listening. It really doesn't get any easier than that."
Using iTunes/iPod:
1) Plug it in
2) Open iTunes
3) Drag and drop the files
The way an mp3 player should work:
1) Plug it in
2) Drag and drop the files
No need to open any software - lots of other mp3 players have been
doing things this way for some time now. Right out of the folder onto
the drive. No software should be required to move files back and forth
to a USB harddrive.
Unrelated:
Is there an option in iTunes to have it not run those two processes
every time I reboot my computer? I get sick of having to manually
kill them all the time. The program itself isn't starting up - but some
crappy little processes that do not need to be running are.
(I have to use iTunes on my phone unfortunately) - bking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're right, Apple should stand up for the customers, and tell the idiot labels to ***** off. That way, they can stop selling music, and just offer free podcasts! That's what the consumers want!
Are you one of those guys that drew anarchy symbols all over his ***** in highschool? - macdaddy23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@cmdrNacho There are many alternatives. eMusic or any music downloading site, go out and buy the c.d. from a store with out the DRM. I'm sick of everyone going iTunes this iTunes that I hate DRM. Well then don't buy from the iTMS simple! But it still make a damn good music player and so far there is nothing better.
- tlogank, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Use orb.com. They let you stream videos, pictures, documents, and audio files. Plus it's free...AND it works awesome on the Wii!
- dilbertmouse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Great work on the horrible description.
This is a Windows / Mac application which creates a flash-based player on the Wii to allow for the control and streaming of iTunes over the network. Apparently, this also worked with web-enabled PDAs, PSPs, remote PCs and the like so this isn't too much of a jump forward. However, they are charging for the application. Looks like $30, but half-off if you do it within the 15-day demo download. (Because that makes so much sense.)
[EDIT: And I'm so glad you figured out how to copy the LMMS logo from their front page.] - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3not that I agree with the guy, but seeing as itunes has deleted my ipod about 5 times in the first month I was working with it (now I'm just super paranoid and stick to the basics, pls don't delete my music apple!) I'm inclined to say that itunes is overrated and if a drag and drop system were widely accepted, we would all be much better off.
- chrisw357, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Quote: "I just love how it 'determines gapless playback' for my 13000 songs out of nowhere, and I cant turn it off."
Um... I could be wrong, but you may be talking about the "crossfade playback", which you can turn off in the iTunes preferences. Also if a song really is determined to have "gapless playback" enabled, you can disable it in that song's info window. In fact, you can even set whole albums to gapless or non-gapless by selecting the whole album and going into the info window for the album.
I've tried other music playback software for Mac, and iTunes beat all of them hands down, IMHO. (Most players didn't even have a graphic EQ!) It has some of the best organization in any interface I've ever seen. Other players that have come out since seemed to be second-best imitations, though Songbird deserves a good look. I wonder if it has an EQ? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with "theBrink" i tunes is ok software for converting mp3s (its fast), and the interface is nice, but, as far as putting music on the ipod, its garbage. It tries to force you to keep the music on your pc, you cant take your ipod to other pcs and put music on it without getting " erase and sync ipod with this library?" how about no!, what if i want to take my ipod to different pcs and put music on it? i want to drag and drop music, to and from my ipod, any ideas? i hear about anapod for windows, but im not sure of it?
- elitexero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why in the hell would you pollute your wii with this *****, I have an ipod, and although there are alternatives, it's easy for interfacing with the ipod. However it's a total piece of *****. I just love how it 'determines gapless playback' for my 13000 songs out of nowhere, and I cant turn it off. Also how it does all sorts of useless things that all the ***** pieces of ***** over at apple deem worthy of having run automatically.

Nowhere did I say that it was 'just a store'. If you could read a post
by yourself you would understand that - rather than just reading the
ignorant replies of others and assuming they are correct in their
assumptions.
Here is one other thing I said: "...drag and drop a file to a drive or folder..."
Yes if you look closely nowhere did I say anything about iTunes not supporting
drag and drop. Clearly, you do not know the difference between a DRIVE or FOLDER
and a PROGRAM like iTunes. Not that you can be blamed, after all iTunes is trying
to convince you that it IS your operating system right?

Yes, you can still do it, even in iTunes 7.0.1. I'm sure it doesn't make our friends in the RIAA happy but, as they say, oh friggin well! I've been doing this to all my purchased music, since some of the 3rd party apps I use for music don't recognize .m4p files.
Some say this degrades the original quality... I've listened to both .m4p and mp3 converted tracks and I either really can't tell the difference, or the difference is very small as to not be noticeable. - theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is how I play my music
cd music
cd Smashing Pumpkins
#Wait, I forgot that underscore
cd music
cd Smashing_Pumpkins
cd Mellon_Collie_And_The_Infinite_Sadness
xine Zero.mp3
Repeat for the next track in the album
Wait, I use a frontend which handles all of that for me! - Elric1977, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not sure why people don't like iTunes.
It's the easiest to use, it organizes everything for you, and it's 100% totally free.
I have an iPod and love iTunes, I plug it in, drag the songs I bought or pirated, or ripped, to it, and in seconds they are there for the listening. It really doesn't get any easier than that.
If you don't like itunes, don't get an iPod. But if you like easy, and I mean EASY, then giver.
I keep my library on a 300GB external, and it was as easy as clicking twice to get the software to point to my Library. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YAY FOR DRM! Oh...wait...nevermind. Seriously, it's because of DRM that we have to have this software instead of just setting up some web-controllable music playing applet. Haven't the masses realized this yet? And I'm not just talking iTunes - any online music service that has DRMed, locked down music, in my opinion, is *****.
"works like a charm - I'm now playing my itunes tracks via my Wii through my huge home theatre rig. I also just paid for the app - it's only $15 if you buy it during the 15 day free trial period."
I'm glad it works, however you shouldn't have to pay $15 to play music you already own just because it's locked down. Oh, wait, that's right, you don't own it. You have "licence" to it. Silly me. - LycoLoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you have to pose it as a question, it's probably not really "for the win"
- punkrock4life, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1this has nothing to do with itunes - inaccurate!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If only I could listen to my ITMS songs on my 360. That would be life changing.
- sinurgy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@griz
"The small flaw in the analogy lies in the ability to make a copy."
I disagree with that flaw being considered "small". It's simply a bad analogy period and I wish people would quit using it! - cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1macdaddy23 please explain..
is it not valid that most of us hate DRM because of the restrictions placed, isn't forcing iPod users to a certain software just as restrictive. There are other great softwares as well I prefer Songbird or Amarok, both better. I dont have an iPod so I don't really know what other alternatives there are to iTunes on getting your music on the iPod - macdaddy23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Your a retard too!
