It's Settled: Jimi Hendrix Joins Guitar Hero World Tour!
joystiq.com — Activision today scored a major player for Team Guitar Hero (take that Rock Band!), landing Jimi Hendrix, who will make his posthumous "video game debut" in Guitar Hero World Tour. Hendrix will feature as a playable character in the game, and two master tracks from the fire-casting rock star will ship on the game disc

- eyepatch100, on 07/21/2008, -3/+24I hope they have him playing a righty strat left-handed on the game.
- havefuntimes, on 07/21/2008, -2/+16It will open the kids eyes to some really great rock and roll! Thanks !
The best hendrix picture ever? I'm not sure about that, but it shows what it's all about.
http://socalspaces.com/the-best-hendrix-picture-ev ...- insanekoz, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Only digging you for the pic.
- OverG, on 07/22/2008, -1/+0me too digging you ! ! :)
- chaosblade77, on 07/22/2008, -7/+2Glad to hear that. Want to hear the rest of the list... Rock Band's has been released, I don't think Activision can keep it a secret and get away with it. I'm pretty much sold on GH:WT (disk only) though.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/22/2008, -10/+20"take that Rock Band!"
....I'll take Rock Band.- synyster, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1now your credit card details please
- bawpcwpn, on 07/22/2008, -1/+7GH:WT is a winner for Wii users considering Harmonix don't seem to like us Wii users much.
- moolcool, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Corp's don't hate anybody, they just do what will get them money, and at time of RB's release it wasn't viable to put much work in the wii version until they test the water with a cheap port and GH3 sales.
- Setreal, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3That comes with not having more than a couple GB of storage. I can't tell you how many friends have waited for the Wii of Rock Band who look dissapointed and sad when I tell them about the great songs you can't download for the Wii. It's crazy Activision and N can't figure this one out.
- freetyme, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1While the Wii definitely needs a storage solution Guitar Hero isn't really suffering from one. You can use an SD card and download and play songs using it. What Nintendo really should do is do a firmware upgrade allowing HCSD cards (and use SD cards as their storage solution) but since that's not happening I have a 2GB card waiting to be used to download songs with GHWT comes out.
- nicko68, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1RB is EA/Harmonix, not Activision.
And Activision (and Neversoft) have figured it out with GH:World Tour.

- skidme, on 07/22/2008, -10/+26Guitar Hero sucks. These people are money-grubbing bastards.
- timusca, on 07/22/2008, -8/+13How are they anymore money-grubbing than Harmonix? Its a business, and the games are fun... get off your high horse.

"In light of today's official Rock Band Wii announcement, we asked Harmonix if there was any chance the Guitar Hero 3 controller would be compatible with Rock Band (and vice versa). The response was less than hopeful, with Harmonix telling us it's up to Activision -- in other words, no."
- chewbacca77, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/24/tabulator-guitar ...
- Taedirk, on 07/22/2008, -4/+4Your argument is invalid after Rock Band Wii.
- superoven, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2seriously... Harmonix doesn't like the Wii crowd obviously
- synyster, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1they not charity
- tidu, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Actually Microsoft is forcing instrument compatibility from RB2/GH:WT onward. Both sides say they each blocked instruments, but it doesn't really matter on the 360 anymore.
- freetyme, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Microsoft is actually impressing me in this way. Sure Microsoft can be seen as bullies at times but with LIVE they seem to be using your 50 bucks a month, if for nothing else, than to make devs play by the rules like having the same gamertag for all games and all games having achievements.
It really makes the 360 a unified experience and while I don't have one Microsoft continues to impress me with the dedication as much as they disappoint with the nickel and diming. - MechaZain, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2Greatest guitarist of all-time featured in Guitar Hero: "Sell-out. - DeFex, on 07/22/2008, -10/+29Jimi Hendrix is rolling in his grave.
- timusca, on 07/22/2008, -6/+12Yeah, probably because he can't believe retards like you give a ***** that his music is featured in a video game and are upset about it.
- mrgreenjeans, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I thought so initially, but I think it's helping to keep his music alive for the kids.
- galvo, on 07/22/2008, -5/+14That's cool and all, but I have a feeling that Rock Band will continue to be better than Guitar Hero.
- Loggins, on 07/22/2008, -4/+1Continue?
- chaosblade77, on 07/22/2008, -2/+2Unless you own a Wii...
- galvo, on 07/22/2008, -2/+4Well if you're using a Wii for multiplayer rhythm games, then you just lose.
- tidu, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1I'm gonna go complain that there's no GTA on the Wii
- freetyme, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2@galvo:
Why the Wii is a great (offline) multiplayer system and with DLC for Wii on GHWT why not? It only makes since to go with the product that treats your system of choice the best and right now, for me, it's the Wii (it's all I have and even if it wasn't I already have the GH3 guitar that will be compatible and want as few plastic instruments as possible)
- RadioFreeOpium, on 07/22/2008, -11/+5Thats so not cool... its a freakin' video game with a plastic baby guitar exploiting a great musician to sell more copies.
- Dragular, on 07/22/2008, -1/+5Or a freakin' dead musician's family exploiting a great video game to make more money.
- DeFex, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1popular does not mean great. otherwise mcdognads hamburger would be the very best food you could possibly buy.
- maddskillz, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1While I agree, popular doesn't mean great, the two things don't have to be mutually exclusive (as in this case)
- timusca, on 07/22/2008, -4/+36What the hell is wrong with all of you people that say it is selling out?! What's the big deal, really? Hendrix's music will continue to live on as music we can all listen to, but now we're able to play it in a game too. Its not like this game will affect yours or Hendrix's lives (or lack thereof). Seriously, its just a damn game.
- maddskillz, on 07/22/2008, -0/+8And it's a game that will expose new people to his music, who might actually like it.
It does seem pointless to say that he can't sell out, since he's dead anyways... - nicko68, on 07/22/2008, -0/+6The game is called "Guitar Hero". Surely he qualifies?
- v0yeur, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2100% agree - this is the first compelling reason I have to pick up the game. I can't wait.
- maddskillz, on 07/22/2008, -0/+8And it's a game that will expose new people to his music, who might actually like it.

- Nosferotu, on 07/22/2008, -0/+8Yeah, you're right, having fun is disgusting. What kind of total @ssho13 thinks they can just go out and have a good time with a video game?
- Dragular, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4I'll tell you what kind: COMMUNISTS.
- texasjustice, on 07/22/2008, -5/+0obviously not the same total @ssho13 that goes out and buys him/herself a real guitar.
- maddskillz, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5Actually, some of us play real instruments, and can still have fun with a game.
- Nosferotu, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Seriously, I don't know if anyone told you j@c40ffs this, but playing guitar hero/rock band IS NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE to playing a real instrument. I play drums, and guitar, and I play rock band, and guitar hero. I love music so much, I'll take it in any venue I can get it in - and I've been playing video games since I was 6, so if there's games that have good, real, quality music in them, bring it on.
- Nosferotu, on 07/22/2008, -0/+8Yeah, you're right, having fun is disgusting. What kind of total @ssho13 thinks they can just go out and have a good time with a video game?
- TheWriteGuy, on 07/22/2008, -3/+11Really, what is there bad about Hendrix songs being in a Guitar Hero game? I think it's great for his legacy as it will introduce a younger generation to appreciate his music, who might not have otherwise been exposed to his work.
- WiretapStudios, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2'might not have otherwise been exposed to his work'
You mean other than the CD's, MP3's, albums, tapes, 8-tracks, constant radio airplay, books, DVD's, posters, ashtrays, backpacks, bongs, and T-shirts with him in / on them?- Coffeedemon, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3If crap like that Polaris spam is making the front page and being called metal I think it may be safe to assume that any push towards good music for the youth should be appreciated. - vindicatur, on 07/22/2008, -17/+3Guitar hero is for wannabe pussies who aren't man enough to play the real thing. Get a real guitar and learn how to use it.

- turpialito, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1Do you really think you're gonna get pussy by playing some toy guitar? Actually I think you'd get more if you learn to play the real thing.
- vindicatur, on 07/22/2008, -1/+0Better yet... do you really think learning 3 chords amounts to playing the guitar?
- MistrBrownstone, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2Lighten up, Francis.
- Urbanninja622, on 07/22/2008, -2/+2Umm real guitars are for old people, we're trying to play a video game here
- afireinside13t, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3I play guitar, and Guitar Hero is still a ton of fun.

- awtripp, on 07/22/2008, -1/+8Sorry, but two of the most over played Hendrix tracks aren't enough for me. Maybe an announcement that his entire catalog will be available at some point. There are so many other Jimi songs I'd rather pretend to play than Wind Cries Mary and Purple Haze.
- nicko68, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I've heard that more will be available through DLC (downloadable content), such as Foxy Lady.
- Bots, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1little wing !
- watch0out0it0kp, on 07/22/2008, -9/+3LET ME MAKE THIS AS CLEAR AS POSSIBLE, putting jimi hendrix in a guitar hero game is one of the worst things yet. His music should never be redone and should never be able to be played by a bunch of people that dont understand his impact on music and guitars. The hendrix family need to stop selling out JIMI!!!!!!!!!!!!
- ChromaVita, on 07/22/2008, -0/+10His music should never be redone and should never be able to be played by a bunch of people that dont understand his impact on music and guitars.
Because nobody ever plays Jimi Hendrix cover songs. And noone has ever butchered a Hendrix song while trying to learn guitar. Don't act like this is the single act that rapes and pillages all of Hendrix's music... - FeloniusMonkey, on 07/22/2008, -1/+5Oh come on... like no good can come of this? Ya gotta at least acknowledge that it's a good way to get today's youth exposed to REAL music.
- Stavrosian, on 07/22/2008, -1/+3Holy mother of god, I hope I never meet you at a party.
- chrispen, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2"His music should never be redone"
Did you not notice the part where it said that the songs were master tracks? In other words, it is actually Jimi himself playing.
- ChromaVita, on 07/22/2008, -0/+10His music should never be redone and should never be able to be played by a bunch of people that dont understand his impact on music and guitars.
- JSquad, on 07/22/2008, -0/+14Of course, nobody seems to remember that he pretty much WAS in Guitar Hero 1 along with Spanish Castle Magic
- Slayer166, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2Please not Voodoo Child.
- brandonAll, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4No voodoo child? Denied?
- dixienormous101, on 07/22/2008, -3/+5it's a video game...need I say more? Do you people get pissed when you see someone playing that sega bassfishing game at a gamearcade, or ddr, or time crisis (because the preceeding 3 games involve 'fake plastic "baby" accessories, or watered down scifi action)? Only a bunch of retarded phucks on a website would preach their holier-than-thou game ethics because they can fingerpick, or bass-slap. Seriously, get over yourself. And just remember, there's ALWAYS someone better than you are.
So have fun having a stick in your ass, while my fat ass is having fun playin jimi's music on guitar hero. What better way to honor a man of his caliber, than to celebrate his work in a way millions can enjoy who would otherwise never have heard his music.- WiretapStudios, on 07/22/2008, -2/+1'millions ... who would otherwise never have heard his music.'
You mean other than the CD's, MP3's, albums, tapes, 8-tracks, constant radio airplay, books, DVD's, posters, ashtrays, backpacks, bongs, and T-shirts with him in / on them? How will they ever find out about Hendrix?- dixienormous101, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1the majority of this country no longer utilizes 'albums' (vinyl?), tapes, 8-tracks, and less than 60% of the country 'reads' on a daily basis. Not everyone's exposed to the same forms of media as you and maybe myself are. 30% of this country does or HAS smoked in the past, so that means nothing either. Bongs point more towards Marley than Hendrix as well. I live in Houston, 4th largest city in the U.S., and he's heard on one station in this city, 93.7 the arrow (classic rock). He doesn't get jack for airtime like he used to. Not to mention the countless other countries in this world that will have access to this game and hear what Hendrix is really about. You think 12-year-olds have the same access in france to Hendrix music that we do without a medium such as video games? Think about guitar hero 3 and all the extra songs that were on there from different countries, spanish bands, french, german bands, completely unknown until that game came out. Yes, he's dead, but so is Elvis, Tupac, and Johnny Cash, and they're makin just as much now dead as they were living, albeit MAYBE Tupac now. Exposure is exposure, don't double standard this forum like you've never *****-ed somebody over for a profit or done something selfish to advance yourself to someone else's expense. [Guess you were never 4 years old and tattled on someone for smacking you in the side of the head in the back of your mom's mini-van just for the sake of getting them in trouble to make you look good.] Keep that shiit on myspace with the 12 year-olds, please. Buried.
- WiretapStudios, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1If you think people don't know who Jimi Hendrix is, and need a video game to expose them, you are mistaken. I doubt they only play him on ONE station in Houston, we have over 3 stations in our medium size city that he has songs on. He is played just as much now as ever, not to mention they are using songs from his entire catalog vs. what single was out at the time.
He is only one of the TOP GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME. You think he is going to fade away?
If you think that 12 year olds know ***** about ANY music, you are mistaken. They will have to find out about Hendrix like everyone else has for the last 40 years.
I also don't give a ***** if they listen to it or not, I like it, my friends like it, my kids will hear it through me...if some 12 year old kid in france doesn't get exposed to it, ***** him.
What did your rambling about myspace and tattling have to do with *****? Nothing. Buried back.
- WiretapStudios, on 07/22/2008, -2/+1'millions ... who would otherwise never have heard his music.'
- Urbanninja622, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2I really like all Hendrix songs but you think they would have dropped All Along the Watchtower by now. But what I would really like is for Rock Band and Guitar Hero to stop having a who's dick is bigger contest and start letting each other use any song. Aren't they supposed to be making these games for our enjoyment
- Setreal, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1At least the instruments are now compatible with each other. Disc swapping is a pain, sure, but it beats having two sets of plastic instruments. I may actually get the Activision product if they have good songs. I love Harmonix and their employees but I don't have much love lost for either Activision or MTV/EA.
- Garjon, on 07/25/2008, -0/+0"Aren't they supposed to be making these games for our enjoyment"
Um, no. They're not making them for our enjoyment. They're making them to make money.
I'd continue to explain, but just trying to think like you (where it seems you're against competition) hurts my head.
- jonnyfrag, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Better on Guitar Hero than hawking worthless ***** on TV or something. GH (and Rockband too) is kind of like a Hall of Fame for guitarists(& bands) so not having Hendrix is kind of a slight depending on how you look at it.
- insanekoz, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1Except not really.
- tresvold, on 07/22/2008, -3/+0rock band is just cheesy
- Nezacant, on 07/22/2008, -2/+3I am so tired of the comments about Rock Band for the Wii. Why can't the nintendo fan boys get over the fact that the Wii in terms of hardware can't hang with the other two consoles. Rock Band on the Wii sucks because of the Wii. Then they defend Guitar Hero 3 on the Wii... when its sound WAS IN ***** MONO when it was first released. Get your ***** heads out of your asses.
I own a Wii but at least I realize what it can and cannot do.- onedeep, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3They probably do all of that because Guitar Hero 3 for the Wii is significantly better than Rock Band for the Wii.
Not because of the music, not because of graphics, not because of the sound, and not because of the rhythms.
It is better because the GH3 guitar is SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER than the RB guitar.
Both games have the same potential to be fun, but only one is. The guitar controller for RB is so abysmal that it sucks all fun out of playing. Sure, GH3 tracks might get hard wicked fast, and might not be as "musical" as the RB tracks, but at least when I strum the note, the game registers it.
Nothing is more frustrating than poor controller design, and as such, Rock Band Wii fails miserably.- Nezacant, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Heh, I can't argue with that. It wasn't just the Wii's Rock Band guitar. It was the RB guitar across all consoles that sucked. I had Guitar Hero 2 on 360 so I had that guitar. I received Rock Band (Just the game) as a Christmas gift. So I got the drum set separate and used my GH guitar. I wanted a 2nd guitar, so I bought the RB guitar when it finally sold separately. Motion Sensor didn't work. Returned it. Repeat that process 4 times. No lie. 4 times!!!! So I gave up and bought GH3 with the wireless guitar and use that.
I love Rock Band (as much as I love Guitar Hero) but hate their controllers. I hope Rock Band 2 guitars work better.
My angry rant was more about the ones who compare their version of of the game to the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions and say they were ripped off.
- Nezacant, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Heh, I can't argue with that. It wasn't just the Wii's Rock Band guitar. It was the RB guitar across all consoles that sucked. - Darkangel754, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1What part of the Wii hardware is stopping online play and DLC? Obviously nothing since it's in GH:WT.
- Nezacant, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2Oh I didn't know GH:WT was out yet in order for you to make that assumption. Wonder how you'll fit all of that music in a box with no hard drive.
- Darkangel754, on 07/23/2008, -1/+1It's not assuming if the company confirmed it, oh and a 2GB SD card is fine for song downloads.
- Nezacant, on 07/23/2008, -0/+2Ahh damn it. I hate losing an arguement. Forgot about that SD card slot. For the sake of those with only a Wii I hope the game is as they say will all the same features.
- onedeep, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3They probably do all of that because Guitar Hero 3 for the Wii is significantly better than Rock Band for the Wii.
- herval, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3I thought Jimmy Hendrix character was already there since Guitar Hero 1?
- superoven, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2There was like a pretend one until now
- MediaCrisis, on 07/22/2008, -0/+2Yes, but is the guitar controller flame retardant?
- Snakedal337, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Harmonix nailed this already in an instrumental version of Spanish Magic Castle. GH1. I am not impressed.
- thejesus2000, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1Maybe now they can resurrect the real XAVIER STONE, the greatest character from GH1. They made Xavier a rip-off Jimi in GH2/3 and I was sorely upset about it. There is room for both Xavier and Jimi now.
- NikkiA, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Hendrix's estate sold out the day they allowed his name, music, and vague likeness to be used for that ***** pepsi ad. In comparison this is tame, at least he is still respected as a guitarist in this deal.
- superoven, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Awesome! I was already certain to get GH:WT but this just seals the deal further.
- Pinmonkey555, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Good job taking the EA buy everything out and name plastering approach Activision.
- BobbyMC, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1As one boy once chose a brand of soda over another and became a rock star, maybe the kid who chooses Gutiar Hero over Rock Band and gets to experience Hendris will do the same.
It sure doesn't hurt the new guitar has string bending and tapping options.
It can't hurt to add that this deal only hurts Rock band consumers because the estate LET Activision buy exclusivity. Blame his sister for taking over and his father for cutting Leon out completely. - rsHoratio, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1I wonder if they will have his acid-filled bandanna in the online store?
- CherrySmith123, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1AWESOME!!!! :) between this and aerosmith I may have to purchase this thingy mah-jigger!!
- BenS, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1Sad.. pathetic game.
- dixienormous101, on 07/22/2008, -1/+1never said nobody knew him, just made the obvious comparison with other artists, namely dead (also, see nirvana), that continued exposure can and will still exist. Conjecture-based comments mean *****, there's one classic rock station in this city now that plays his music and that's 93.7, the other two are alternative and oldies stations and neither plays his music. You can doubt all you want, a turd sandwich is still a turd sandwich no matter what bread you use. He's never had anywhere close to the airtime that guitarists better, or far worse, have ever had on radio or in media period, which is really sad (see: spectrum of Fallout Boy to Van Halen). Your point about "your city" has ***** to do with shine. The U.K. has techno radio stations, does that mean, then, that your city, or Houston, or the US, MUST have them too? No, more huge-internet-*****-double-standards as usual. You think, therefore the rest of us must assumedly know the same knowledge, just like everyone MUST know who Jimi Hendrix is. You're truly a ***** thinker, and i truly hope you don't pass that gene onto people. We have enough ***** on this planet and they already seem like the only ones breeding to begin with. We don't need any more than necessary.
If you don't like it, don't ***** play, some of us aren't "too proud" to "thuk thuk thuk" on a plastic guitar for the sake of fun. Especially with a legend like that. Sit in your cressida with your 8-tracks and leave the rest of us having fun the ***** alone. - turboblake, on 07/22/2008, -1/+2I have no issue with a few of his songs being in the game, what I have issue with is actually having Hendrix as a playable character in the game. There is no way in heaven or hell that Hendrix would have ever gone for something like that. If you read up a little bit about his posthumous commercial rights you'll see that his family was snuffed out and that a record label "owns" him and they have no issue using his image to sell video games or play guitar around the new Nissan Sinada. I think its sad to see Hendrix disrespected like this, that's all.
... oh and the only reason slash was in the last game is because he's washed up, broke as hell, and needs to pay for his alcohol and drug addictions. - SaladCactusKing, on 07/22/2008, -0/+1Asked for comment on his inclusion in the game:
