- tehdan3, on 10/12/2007, -74/+189ps3 sucks.
wii doesn't.
'nuff said. - JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -10/+89They said a million before year end, Digg scoffed at its impossibility with only 250k at launch in the US.
They did it and somehow its bad...I don't get it. Awesome Wii sales though. ^_^ - jtjdt, on 10/12/2007, -11/+78The second my grandma (76) purchased a Wii, I knew it would win.
- willi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+65Dude, it's not 3 million in the US, it's the world.
- milesd, on 10/12/2007, -17/+72Its official, I have a Wii, and I still don't give a *****...
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -6/+47PS3 fanboys: It's OK to admit defeat. PS2 kicked GC's ass......and you all reveled and rubbed it in everyone's faces.
Is it so hard to admit that Nintendo stepped up, tried something different, brought a great product to the market, and consumers responded to it better than the PS3?
Stop making excuses - the PS3 project has been riddled with problems since I started following it in 2005. - kaje, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40"Wii sells 3.19 MILLION consoles since launch!"
...and I still haven't been able to get one in stores... Damnit! - lazydrumhead, on 10/12/2007, -7/+42I'm glad they officially hit such a landmark number! Just like they did yesterday!
- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -8/+33While i like the idea of someone outselling Sony.
I dislike a return to the days of nintendo dominance.
In the 80s, nintendo was so ruthless and such a kingpin in the American market, they killed all innovations and gouged customers.
And even the most die hard nintendo fan doesn't want that.
- benbread, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26heh, since where was a million mere? I'm not on the side of sony, but one million is a hell'a lott'a consoles to sell, i wouldn't mind having the profits from those consoles sold.... oh wait..
- johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28When it's almost have of 7 million.
- Chode2235, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Different Nintendo, Yamamuchi (sp?) was in charge and was horribly ruthless. Nintendo's revival has been led by Iwata, so remember it is a different company and different philosophy. Granted its still a for profit company run by old greedy Japanese businessmen.
But I fail to see how this is worse than a Balmer dominated landscape. Other than the chairs littering the plains. - TheTjalian, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17That may be true, but Nintendo has experienced their fall already, they know not what to do now.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18the problem is when they sell them at a loss they HAVE to make their money back on liscenses. with only 1 million units, a cooling demand, price most people can't justify, and a flop of a launch, developers are getting skiddish about the ps3. if the devs get scared it's easy for it to become a mass-exodus of game support. with there being 3.19 million systems in homes already and there still being plenty of people who want a wii (myself included), the developers are going to make games for the system with the most units to have the best chance of selling their games.
- Tony611, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"this is the most bogus thing I've ever seen on the front page."
i can see you're new here
welcome to digg - aaronm67, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Eh, I'm not a PS3 fan, but Sony has sold consoles at a huge loss before and come out just fine after game liscensing is done.
Most consoles are sold at a loss. Nintendo doesn't need to essentially because they're already the cheapest console. But it's far more common to sell consoles for a loss then it is to sell them for profit. - firepowered, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I agree with "LAST", this Digg thing should link to http://www.vgcharts.org/ , where the "offiical" numbers were generated. Not this video, becasue,
1) They used http://www.vgcharts.org/
and 2) I didnt get anything the first time (too busy watching the hot presenter) and had to watch it a second go. - mutantmagnet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Unless you know for a fact that they have little clue about the industry aside (like the woman who hosts cheat) from what they are fed to say by the guys writing in the background get over your mysoginist angst. It really doesn't matter who is the reporter acting as the public mouth piece of a news agency and who is the reporter digging up that news just as long they do their job.
- NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13I've heard so many different numbers I just don't know what to believe.
- ibeetle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I love the link to G4 TV.
G4 sucks... G4 sucks... Comcast ruined TechTv. G4 sucks.
...oh wait they said something bad about the PS3...
G4 rules! - lastberserker, on 10/12/2007, -12/+19These numbers are dragged from http://www.vgcharts.org/ rumor mill. I don't know where OP's definition of "OFFICIAL" comes from though...
- avasol, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15I've already played my Wii about 10x more than my Xbox 360 since I got it. In fact I'm selling my 360.
I will however get a PS3 as well, but the one console I can't find room for any more is my 360. - Elric1977, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14That's why there are still some on store shelves? Pfft, they sure aren't selling around Southwestern Ontario!
Anyways, you'd think G4 would have better streaming capabilities, either that or she's got one nasty stutter! - avasol, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14@DocWhoWho
Why am I a moron for saying I love my Wii and use it more than my 360 which I will sell?
You're the ***** moron. Fanboy. - Mescaline, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12But that's the same with all monopolies.
Sony is heading in that direction with the PS3 and that's probably going to be their downfall. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I love how people think when somebody buys an HDTV there is no chance they could be interested in anything that's not HD after that. Did everybody throw out their DVD collection (also 480p) when they bought an HDTV? I've owned an HDTV for two years and the only console I own is a Wii, and I love it. Sure it would be nice if it was HD, but the price and fun factor far outweigh that minor inconvenience.
Also don't forget that Nintendo is trying to appeal to the non-techie non-gamer market. This group is less likely to own an HDTV, and if they do they're the ones still using standard cable connected by coax and thinking they're getting HD. All the non-gamers I've shared my Wii with thought the graphics were *AMAZING*. These aren't the people who pore over the Internet and magazines for screen shots. - bluemist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Well the Wii will drop in price too, maybe to ridiculously low 130-150$ levels, then we'll see if the mainstream market still favors the console.
Nintendo's advantage here is that they will always have the cheapest game in town from now on, no matter how much MS or Sony try to drop their prices. The disadvantage is when/if the novelty wears off. - OddTSi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What is it that makes this number "official?" It's definitely possible, but if you're going to say "it's official" you're going to have to cite your source and it better not be some analyst somewhere that's making a guess.
- mousky, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Don't believe any. They are all meaningless. If you buy a gaming console and are satisfied with it, why should you care about how many Wiis, PS3s or 360s are sold? Just enjoy the console that you purchased or received as a gift. This whole Wii vs PS3 discussion has become lame.
- Empythree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The thing is will they be able to sustain the momentum once the 360 and PS3 start to drop in price and start competing in the mainstream market."
I agree with some of what your saying, but the Wii does have something going for it to keep a more constant sale stream, that being: accessibility. If Nintendo makes more games like Wii Sports which really anyone can enjoy(with the exception of the jaded graphics whores), they will be able to keep sales their sales up because they will be broadening the market to places the 360 and PS3 can't touch, that of the non and very casual gamer. - psylence, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Another fine phonics student.
- Edrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"The thing is will they be able to sustain the momentum once the 360 and PS3 start to drop in price and start competing in the mainstream market."
Wait. Stop right there. The 360 and PS3 aren't mainstream. They were not designed with that in mind. They are for hardcore gamers. Video gaming has never been *truly* mainstream. While the 360 and PS3 might be a shoe-in for the average gamer, most people are not gamers. The 360 and PS3 will not grow the market at all.
People, you need to stop looking at this through the eyes of a gamer. The Wii isn't solely for gamers, it's for *anyone*. It won't matter how cheap the 360 and PS3 are, or how many gorgeous games come out, the general public won't care. Yet if Nintendo manages to create an iPod-like image for the Wii (gaming for the masses), then the other two consoles, and the average gamer, will become a niche market. Things will change, and gamers hate change. - haloevo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4What's with this gay official ***** lately...
- blofeld9999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wii specs here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii
Gamecube specs here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamecube
Tell me if they're the same. - shiftless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Okay, great another console sales number that still doesn't mean much for the bajillionth day in a row.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If Sony wants to follow in BMW's footsteps and be a luxury console maker then more power to them. Looking at the history of expensive consoles though I wonder if it's a wise business decision. The difference between cars and consoles is that consoles have to convince developers to make games for them. Sony has made a choice that will most certainly limit their market share--we'll have to see if that scares developers off.
- LuxFX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@kaje: "...and I still haven't been able to get one [Wii] in stores"
As opposed to the PS3! I was in a Walmart on Dec. 23rd. It was, of course, amazingly crowded. And there were four PS3s just sitting on the shelf. - hybrid8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3bah! i cant get a damn wiimote anywhere, and the Wii is a multiplayer console ='(
- traken, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Graphics this, HDTV that. It's enough to drive someone insane. Yes, good graphics are good. But they won't sell a console by themselves. Personally, I'm really tired of FPS shooters. Gears of War is just another "best graphics" shooter that didn't bring anything new to the table.
And really, I don't see Sony making all that money back. They've lost support of gamers, and they'll lose support of developers too. It costs almost twice as much money to make a game on PS3 than the Wii. Then you have to factor in that the twice as many people have a Wii. It's simply a bad idea to make games for the PS3 (unless you want to have another "OMG Graphics" game). - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nexgenwars.com fails at life, just for the record (was that your source SM)?
360 is closing in on 8 million.
Wii is around 3 and a half million.
PS3 is about 1 and a quarter million.
How fast Wii closes in on the 360 (I do believe it will surpass it eventually) depends on software. Mainly, how successful will Super Smash Bros. be, how successful will Halo 3 be, and, oh yeah, will either system see a price drop?
Oh, and the DS is over 35 million...more than all next-gen consoles and the PSP combined... - miketuck3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6theve mever made this much loss on them though and also sold it for so much money
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The Wii is at least twice as powerful as the Gamecube, so we will see games that are better than anything on the 'cube eventually. Also you can talk about how they could release an adapter to use the controllers on the Gamecube, but they won't. That means no Rayman Raving Rabbids, Wii Sports, or any of the other games that will come out that will make great use of the controller.
Even if they did release an adapter for the 'cube to match the Wii's functionality you'd still be out $60 for a controller, $10 for a sensor bar, $70 for the wireless adapter, $25 for a memory card, $50 for Wii Sports and you still wouldn't have as nice a system. After the response the Wii got during a Christmas party with about 40 people I'm convinced it's the best money I've ever spent on a videogame system. - vidorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You know even with all i had read i still wasn't sure which console i was going to buy. I'm 33 with a 13 year old son. He has a ps2 with lots of games etc. I've been a pc fps gamer since the early 90's. Other then a few rounds of Hot shots golf the ps2 was regulated to my son's play time.
So we go into Best Buy X mas eve and they had just gotten a shipment of ps3's in. 599 for the 60 gb. So I'm thinking ok I'm gonna buy this, so i ask the guy where the games are. Not a single game for the ps3 even interested me in the least. So then the parent/budgeter of money kicked in. Game + extra controller + ps3 = 700+ tax. Now we do have a 42 plasma which would have made the hdmi, blue ray a nice addition as well as the graphics.(I must be a selfish parent because i was only going to spend that much money if our entire family could/would make use of it)
But you know being a gamer from way back you have to realize games do not rise and fall on graphics (eye candy) I've watched games with awesome graphics go by the way side because they lacked overall good game play.
So after walking around bb for about an half hour i turned down the ps3. Day after x mas hubby is in wal mart buying something and finds 3 wii's and grabs one. So here we are 269 system + 39 wii mote+ 19 nunchuck + 80 for 2 games.
All that for less then the cost of the ps3 unit alone.
I have not enjoyed a console this much since the 80's when the first Nintendo came out.
What i am afraid of is Sony is almost ahead of it's time right now. They are offering very hi tech hi priced items that just can't be marketed to the "average" American. Here on digg we may all have t.v.'s capable of 1080 but not everyone does.
A parent on a budget will not be able to justify the cost associated with the ps3. And I'm not sure the target audience of Sony (teens) are going to be willing to go out and get a 5.50 an hour job to pay for it themselves. Like us old fogies did to pay for our first nes.
Although i want to see them all succeed competition = consumer on top. - fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4awesome, Nintendo did say they wanted 4mil before March, I think they are going to smash that goal!!!
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It all depends on how you define success. Even if it turns out to be the greatest console ever I don't see it selling anywhere near as well as the PS2 just due to price. If you use the PS2 sales as your sole metric the PS3 will almost assuredly be a failure.
If the PS3 sells 40-50 million consoles is that really a failure though? If it's enough to ensure the success of BluRay then it's probably a success for Sony. If it sells well enough to ensure several must have games it's a success for gamers.
I really doubt the PS3 by most metrics will be as successful or dominating as the PS2, but that kind of misses the point. The fact is all three consoles can succeed, and that's the best outcome for gamers. - chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You forgot Wii Sports. I want to see that on the GC, or any other mainstream consoles for that matter in the last ten years.
- fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's official, the predictable came true..
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've had kids, 20-somethings, 30-somethings, 40-somethings, 50-somethings, and 70-somethings try out the Wii at my house. It's been an amazing success at EVERY age group. Granddaughter against Grandmother, dad against son, husband against wife--everybody has had a blast. Our Wii was at the center of the best Christmas party ever and everybody wanted to play.
I've turned the PS2 on during parties before and only the little kids took any notice. Which one is for kids again? - TomRemixed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3no G4 sucks...
- billsil, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Being the industry leader doesnt guarantee bad business for the consumer. I couldnt care less about the contracts made, I want to play fun, exciting games. Having a single console guarantees nice contracts for Nintendo/Sony/MS whatever. If a game will easily sell million copies on a particular system, a company like Capcom will make many games for it. Some will even be innovative. The nes, ps2, and gameboy have had some seriously innovative and bizarre games, much more so than the in snes/genesis era. Having an industry leader allows for the publisher to take more risks. It also can potentially lead to lower prices. Look at Sony and they're $20 best seller games. PS2 games dropped in price quicker and were lower on games than on gamecube.
For sony selling fewer consoles than nintendo...for the most part they've both sold out. I want a wii, so i waited in line. I would have been able to buy a ps3, but passed on it. PS3 has no great games at the moment, but and once they release a new gran turismo/other big exclusive, people will want the console beyond having to have the newest hi-tech, novelty, overpriced, paperweight. Sony is hardly beat, they have too much money from the last two rounds of complete and utter domination. People will sing a very different tune when the price is $200 less. There's too much money involved to not put forth some concentrated effort, be in a price cut or some exclusive game. and ps3 is an amazing console despite being a bit overpriced. -
