- MysticX, on 10/12/2007, -10/+94Ehm....that´s why I´m getting a Wii!
- StevethePirate, on 10/12/2007, -21/+78Hardcore gamers use a pc...
- BlueLaser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33Actually, most "hardcore" gamers I know don't go exclusive.
They usually own a gaming PC AND a Xbox/PS2 AND a GameCube AND usually a "retro" gaming system from the "good 'ol days" (like a SNES). - phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -10/+40I'm going Wii60. It was meant to be.
- skidzilla, on 10/12/2007, -10/+39Wii love Wii!
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37PC+Wii FTW!!!@121 :)
Gamecube games are (currently) a big hit with my "non-gaming" friends, and if I want some "hardcore" gaming, I just turn on my PC and sit down to some good ol' internet gameplay. - adidax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+30Console players can start bitchin' when their PS3 costs more than my graphics card.
- Lazybones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25"gamers are funny, they will take a computer over a nice car, why can't these kids get lives?!"
You can get a nice car for under $2000 ? - DoubtingThomas, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27"gamers are funny, they will take a computer over a nice car, why can't these kids get lives?!"
Or maybe we are just comfortable with the size of our penis - TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -16/+36I'll be getting the WiiC (Wii + PC)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23How big can you're e-penis become? Hardcore gamers are basically pushing their system whereas there is no game out there that cannot run on a 1k system. You have to be kidding me that 100 fps, is far too slow, or even 50 fps is too slow, Unless you push every single setting to the MAX.
This generation will still work with a:
x1900xtx/7900gtx
2 gigs of ram
Any Dual processor.
Bing bing bing, winner. That's easy. - born, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Stop the PC snobbishness! Who says the Red vs Blue crowd isnt hardcore?
I'm a PC gamer myself, but you have to recognize that hardcore gaming may also reside with the console crowd as well. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14but a dreamcast only costs 20 bucks these days, and the games roughly 5!
hardcore gamers arent suffering, they're in heaven! - iluvdrbonner, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17I disagree. In my opinion, hardcore gamers must be skilled on every platform. While they may be best at (and favor) a PC, they should still be noteworthy on consoles. Any person that calls themselves a hardcore gamer and only plays one system is normally just a fan-boy.
Willy - darthsnoopy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16I'm sorry, but since when did the term 'gamer' tie us to a latest and greatest?
To me, a gamer is a person that enjoys games, from any genre, any era. If I choose to perfect my Gorf score, I still feel I'm a gamer, and the cost of these consoles is irrelevant...
crap, I just admitted I play gorf... - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12And the PS3 would be about $400 cheaper if you hadn't blown your money on that doorstop... er... I mean, PSP that Sony told you was the salvation of handheld gaming. You know, the one you play emulators on instead of watching UMDs or playing actual PSP games.
- Jakerius, on 10/12/2007, -14/+26It's true. Hardcore Gaming = Non-console zone.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14What the hell is wrong with you guys? A hardcore gamer isn't just about consoles or just about PC... they're about GAMES. They own every console, portable, and a l33t computer.
- xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13The whole article was about spending a lot of money. PCs and PC games = A lot of money to be spent.
- Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11For me it isn't the base cost. Its the continual rising cost of games plus the push for paying for additional content. Games have been $50 for so long and breaching that it a big mental barrier for me and some other people I know.
- nukethewhales, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@oGmo
Yep those are the hardcore gamers because they got to play the Panzer Dragoon games, Ocarina of Time, Shenmue, and Halo. Some of the best games ever made. - helfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9i think the word "hardcore" is tied to the latest and greatest, not gamer.
- skellener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9It's always better to wait a year or two after the debut anyway for a new console. By then you get a lower price point on the system (and by then many of the bugs have been ironed out), a huge library of cheap used games to choose from and in two years time is usually when the developers hit their stride with great games for the systems.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I think I'd be considered a hardcore gamer, any of us that played dozens of games this year would be. Especially if some of our fondest memories are of classic PC games lol. My last console was the SNES, got a decent computer and I haven't looked back since.
Many of the best games get ported to all systems so it doesn't really matter. (Hitman Blood Money, GTA:SA, COD2, Silent Hill 4, plus we got Civ IV, Heroes V, Battlefield 2, Galactiv Civ 2, along with tons of poorly selling under-rated games and a much bigger home-brew and indie selection than any console gamer gets.... I'm not bragging, just defending the PC.
And yeah it costs more to run a PC game rig than a console, but to those comparing the cost of PCs to cars... would a racing enthusiast take his mom's minivan to the a drag race? The day I spend 25-50k on a new PC you got me, but 2k for a PC is a fair investment but wouldn't even cover insurance for a nice car. - spooq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9coming - spore, new mario, heavenly sword, hl2 episode 1
out now - oblivion, civ4, rockstar table tennis, battlefield2
if there's nothing in that list that interests you, you just don't like videogames. not that there's anything wrong with that, some of my best friends don't like videogames... ;) - bontaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8How long can an audience possibly observe people playing soccer? It's interesting for the first few minutes but then it gets pretty repetetive (that ball just goes back and forth. hoo boy). It's all about being able to relate. You've probably played soccer, so you know when a star player does something amazing. It's the exact same thing with games. I've played that game, so I know when the player does something amazing. To those who can't relate, it's just some guys kicking a ball around or some guy shooting someone else on the computer.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Commodore 64 for the win!
- dfour, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Man some of you guys wear the hardcore gamer badge like it's a purple heart. Being labeled a "Hardcore Gamer" is really nothing to be proud of.
I enjoy a good game, but if anybody even ever tried to call me a "Hardcore Gamer" i would hang my head in shame because there are far more important things to be doing in life. - Chewie67, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@Jakerius - "Hardcore Gaming = Non-console zone."
That may have been the case at one time, but I don't buy that anymore. It's become much more common for big name games to be released on both PCs and Consoles. For every "Killer Game" that's PC only, there's a "Killer Game" that's console only. There are still exceptions, of course, but as time goes on I bet you'll see that there are fewer.
It's economics. If I can write one game, and sell it to PC, PS3, XBox 360 and Wii gamers, I can make much more money than if I limit myself to one platform.
We're quickly getting to the point where consoles are like cars. You can argue BMW versus Lexus and Volvo, but in the end, there is very little actual difference between them. They all get you from A to B in style and run on the same brand of gasoline. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I've sort of lost interest in gaming due to high prices. There's just so many other interesting toys out there that I feel stupid spending so much money on games that are really no better than stuff I owned 5 years ago.
- nukethewhales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Why does it have to be true that you have to own every system and an expensive pc to be a hardcore gamer? Isn't being a Hardcore gamer generally having a love of videogames no matter where they come from? Couldn't you love games you don't own? I know I spent hours on my roommate's PS2 playing Shadow of Collosus and Final Fantasy X. And I used to sneak into a friends house to play Doom 3 on his PC. Does hardcore gamer have to be a title that can only be achieved if you have a huge amount of money to spend?
- xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5noone's hardcore unless they own those kickass neogeo consoles where each cart was like $200+. now that's expensive.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@ Tacom8
So, you are saying that I am an addict just because I paid $400 on a 360, so that I could treat myself to my yearly tax refund gift so that I may enjoy a good game every now and then on the latest technology. You also must be one of those guys who would not buy a car unless it was used because you don't want to loose money on the depreciation. You know, you only live once, so I feel you should reward yourself sometimes with something you can enjoy. And anyway, do you really consider $400 a "vast" amount of money? I mean, I usually get 4 years worth of enjoyment out of a console, so that equates to less than $10 a month. I am sure you have some kind of addiction that costs more than $10 a month, whether it be cigarettes or beer, or what ever else you enjoy. - alphex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Get a job, stop wasting your time playing games, and you can afford the new toys... and then drink lots of Mt Dew so you have time to play them... damn catch 22's...
- nukethewhales, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4One of the things that I find interesting about the new consoles is the rift between the haves and have-nots that this will cause in young gamers. If you can remember back to the old nintendo days you might recall that there wasn't much of a rift when it came to 8 and 16-bit consoles. Most kids had at least one of the consoles that were available. The economic times were just right and most parents were willing to spend the 200 dollars on something for their kids even if they were just barely 6 years old (when I got my NES). These days I don't know if parents who aren't gamers themselves would be willing to spend 500 or 600 dollars on a game system for their kids. Of course the Wii is always a very good option but that is where we will get the rift. Sort of like the kids who had the Neo-Geo systems or one of the early cd systems back in my early days. Of course, those games were not advertised much and were hardly ever called must-have games for anyone other than hardcore gamers at the time but these days its hard to imagine the xbox 360 or the PS3 not having a must have game.
I'm rambling now but its just something that is working around in my head... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A-frickin'-men!
How many variations of "futuristic marine"/"WWII hero" can we play before getting totally bored of it?
run down corridor..
shoot bad guy..
duck into alcove..
find key/passcard/access card..
run-and-gun into super-duper futuristic secret laboratory..
duck behind arbitrarily-placed crates/barrels/vehicles..
run-and-gun down corridor once again..
look-out for flying-via-jetpack enemy! Oooh!
grab pennant/flag/marker..
grab health kit/food/etc..
Me: Zzzzzzzz..
Please. Let this genre DIE DIE DIE already, and let something IMAGINATIVE replace it. - dezmd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I do.
The Red vs. Blue crowd aren't hardcore.
We've been playing 32+ players per map for years, consoles are just starting to catch up. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You don't have to upgrade once a year unless you buy ***** hardware.
It is also uneccessary to have more than one top end graphics card unless you are a developer.
Way to overexaggerate. At least with a PC, you can put it in your price range if you really want it. Hell you can get a killer machine for a couple hundred bucks more than a PS3 total. - credo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Supply and demand I'm afraid, As long as there are people willing to buy XBox360s on eBay for $800, there will be companies willing to sell at the higher prices. No moaning will reverse the trend.
- brandizzle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"Or maybe we are just comfortable with the size of our penis"
Hmph. Or some of us are comfortable with not having a penis at all =) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Madden hasn't changed much since Madden 94 on the SNES. All that has changed are graphics pretty much, the rest is fairly boring features.
- szembek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sure PC gamers play multiplayer, but they play with people they never see for the most part. When I bust out my PS2 it's usally with a twelve pack and a buddy or two. There are extreme examples on both ends, but I think console gamers tend to be the more casual type. Oh and LAN parties are probably one of the nerdiest things I've ever heard of.
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Hardcore" gamers play games and have a good time. If you really love games then you wouldn't isolate yourself to one platform. My definition of a hardcore gamer even loves to go back and play the older systems, as well as new, the only limit being $$, which is getting more and more difficult with MS and Sony.
- bnitro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is why im getting into stamp collecting. Anyone wanna trade for a california raisin stamp? hello....
- edrift101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Buying a new car first - before the HDTV, Xbox 360, etc... It's much more important to be able to get to work than it is to play the new Madden, which is going to be the same ol' s*$t anyway.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree buddy. I'm 31 and I feel it too. Back in the NES/SNES/Genesis days I couldn't get enough. Got a PC in 97 and couldn't play enough Doom, Quake, Rainbow Six, NFS...etc.
I have nowadays I have hundreds of PS2/Xbox/PC games that I just don't care to play. The bits gather dust on their platters. Perhaps it's my age. I thought I got tired of gaming because the games got unimaginitive and the graphics of the consoles fell waaaayyy behind my computer, but perhaps it's just the quality of the games. If I see another crappy movie tie-in or stupid coin collecting platformer, I'm gonna throw my consoles out the window.
I've found that if the game uses cinematics as a crutch, has a 3 hour-long tutorial mission at the beginning, has overly complicated controls, or makes bad use of 3rd person perspective and platforms, I'm out. That's it, can't be played. Also, I cant stand micromanagement games like SIMS anything, RTS's (except for Herzog Zwei), or MMORPGs.
In my old age I enjoy Battlefield 2, GTA: SA on the PC, Doom 3, MAME32, Fight Night Round 3, and Shadow of the Colossus. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
You have to be kidding me that 100 fps, is far too slow, or even 50 fps is too slow
There is a belief among extreme hardcore gamers that in order to get absolutely accurate responsiveness, the game should be running at ~100FPS. This is tied to the sampling frequency used by 3D game engines to detect keyboard & mouse input. They believe this is the magic difference between getting a headshot and a miss in multiplayer games.
From personal experience, I'd say this is going a little overboard, but you do want the game to be running over 30FPS, without stuttering. It's not about how fast the visuals are, it's about how smoothly the game runs.
However, this doesn't mean you MUST run it at 1600x1200 w/ AA & 16x AF & HDR, etc. So gamers with cheaper hardware can still compete with these high-priced rigs. -
