- swOhio, on 10/12/2007, -48/+331I don't see how the strap would just snap at that point and fray like that. I call *****.
This is either a Sony fanboy or someone who wants to replace their previously broken TV via Nintendos wallet. - Talesk, on 10/12/2007, -37/+220I second your call...
The wiimote is pretty sturdy and you'd have to be a complete retard to manage to throw it hard enough to BREAK a television (CRT?) - theredbicycle, on 10/12/2007, -21/+151I call *****, they were bowling! there's no reason to be swinging that hard. Plus they're nerds, they probably can't swing that hard anyways... :)
- noodlez, on 10/12/2007, -16/+107why would anyone let it go, either?
i've not had a problem, thus far, with my hands spontaneously opening and releasing it.
nor have i had it slide around or anything. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+77Error: "I guess a control scheme where you 'throw' the controller at the screen wasn't such a good idea after all!"
Correction: "I guess a user that throws his controller at his TV is an idiot. It takes simple "gestures" to use a Wii controller, not MLB-level pitching speeds." - smiley2billion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+60I see a Mythbusters episode upcoming.
- revisrev, on 10/12/2007, -4/+62Well, funny story, yesterday my wife and I are playing Wii Sports Bowling with one controller. Well, my wife's turn comes up and she can't be bothered with the wrist strap. She pulls back and proceeds to launch the Wiimote straight into my Television, pretty damned hard too (my wife is stronger than your average nerd). End result: No damage, not a scratch on the screen or anything. I was worried too, but I'd have to say that you'd probably have to be trying in order to break your TV.
However, handing wireless controllers back and forth in a carpeted room can produce a large amount of really uncomfortable static discharge, which the Wiimote seems to handle with finesse. - shadgenki, on 10/12/2007, -20/+71I played with mine all day Sunday and didn't notice any wear at all. I'm also gonna say this is BS.
- oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -10/+51you'd have to throw that thing pretty hard to break a tv.... like REALLY hard, a lot harder than playing some bowling game. plus, the broken strap looks pretty cleanly cut. i'd think if it was slowly worn away, it'd be a lot more frayed than that. I think the tv was broken already and they just want it fixed, or he was pissed at the game and threw the remote, then snipped the strap to have someone to blame it on.
- Numfar28, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Ridiculous.
Rediculous is to be used only when someone uses the color red for preposterous reasons. - 0004, on 07/04/2008, -3/+36dudes, before trashing that guy who had his rear projection tv broken, read what he has to say about these flamewars:

Sweet Zombie Jesus! I'm gone 7 hours and look what happens...
Ok, step by step:
1. Pardon my friend Troy. (The one that 'broke' the tv and then came in here to defend himself). He is new to the interwebs. He is not a redneck, just an indie-hipster type that enjoys vintage and irony.
2. I'm not suing anybody.
3. We didn't intentionally cut, strain, snip, snap or anything else to the wrist band. If we HAD, that would be fraud and possibly defamation against Nintendo considering where all this has gone... So simmer.
4. I don't expect Nintendo to come knocking down my door with a brand new TV. I'm not out to extort anybody.
5. Troy lost control of the Wiimote. It slipped from his hand. The wrist band that is built in to prevent this occurance failed. The wrist band SNAPPED. Let me repeat that again.... TROY LOST CONTROL OF THE WiiMOTE. THE WRIST BAND FAILED TO STOP IT from flying into my TV. Does this make it Troy's fault? Does it make it Nintendo's fault? Does this make it Santa Claus' fault? I don't ***** know.
All I know is that it was a FREAK ***** ACCIDENT that cost me my TV.
So chill out. Stop putting words in my mouth. Yes, it's funny. Yes, it's unlikely. Yes it happened.
I posted this thread to INFORM on what had happened. If it happened to you, wouldn't you have done the same? Seriously? I didn't come in here waving red flags and blaming anybody. I didn't even get mad at my friend Troy. I'm just pissed about the TV.
Pass this on to the blogsters if they wanna get the story straight.

end quote - jsully, on 10/12/2007, -9/+41Doesn't anyone remember the article last week from IGN saying that their strap broke?
http://digg.com/gaming_news/IGN_s_Wii_Controller_Strap_Rips
I think it's safe to assume the claim that the strap broke is legitimate, and it depends on what kind of TV it is whether or not it'll do any damage. Keep in mind that with rear projection TV's the screens are made of flimsy plastic - I can definitely see a remote breaking or damaging it.
Now a CRT - there's NO way to break one of those with anything short of a hammer. My friend once punched his TV as hard as he could, and broke nearly every bone in his hand :) - ontain, on 10/12/2007, -11/+43look at the string for the strap. it looks cut, not like a snap.
- dan0368, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Well at least the Wii doesn't cause cancer like the PS3.
- rjfalcon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+35It's impossible, at what speed should that kid have thrown his wiimote at that TV to break the wrist band (and thereby slowing the wiimote down) and let it slip trough his hands to hit the TV. I say it's *****..
- havoc234, on 10/12/2007, -11/+36uh, I kind of feel bad for the guy, only because I was playing bowling with my friend tonight and the remote strap broke pretty much the same way in the picture. I know your suppose to "hold on to the controller not throw it", but seriously after playing for a while I accidently let it go and it broke out of the strap. This ***** can happen. Good thing I ended up throwing a fast one at a chair not a big screen. in the end, the remote was fine and had no visible scratches, but looking at the lanyard, the part that loops in the remote is quite thin and I think nintendo can fix this pretty easily by just putting in lanyards with thicker loops or stronger material.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Maybe the 3rd party vendors will release "xtreme wrist straps" of something like that. Glad you didn't bust up your TV.
- straxus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22"It takes simple "gestures" to use a Wii controller, not MLB-level pitching speeds."
But you have to admit the latter is more fun. - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -6/+25Inaccurate title, dood. Should have been, "User breaks own TV".
- maduin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I remember back in the NES days, I would get so frustrated with Mega Man (damn his weakness to pointy objects), that I would throw the controller at full strength (a 7-year-old's full strength) at the TV screen. Never once broke a TV. I think this is more of a testament to the weak build quality of modern TV's (at least projection TV's).
- Yarnage, on 10/12/2007, -15/+34This is rediculous. The wrist strap is just in case and shouldn't be used instead of gripping the damn thing.
- ArcheKlaine, on 10/12/2007, -18/+35swOhio: "Of course, if this were a PS3 problem, you would not be saying "This is *****!""
Nope. We'd be making jokes on the "boomerang" controller prototype. What else could they throw at their TV while playing a PS3? - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Yeah, I'll buy that there's a bias, but anyone who says, "Whaaa, my wrist strap broke and I'm too stupid to hold onto the controller, and I was swinging it with so much force that it was able to break glass," is a dumbass, plain and simple. If this were a PS3 or a 360, it would be the same thing. User is a dumbass.
You know, you -can- always leave. - quickgold192, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16wiimotes don't kill tvs. people kill tvs.
- rawkes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14"Do not play with your wii without a strap-on"
Awesome, haha! - vmerc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17The strap wouldn't "wear" anyway because there isn't even a force applied to the strap on a regular basis. The only time there would be wear is if you deliberately swing the wiimote around by the strap, and press it against a hard surface while moving it around. The probability that a strap broke is even less likely than OJ being innocent.
Also, to lose your grip on a wiimote...
Please. - walkingdogs, on 10/12/2007, -10/+19This problem is easily corrected, it's called coordination. Maybe if these kids got some actual exercise or played some sports they wouldn't be such spazzes and would have the coordination and strength to hold and wave a 8oz controller for more than 30 min. I claim retarded on the users account.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I sure hope you don't plan on a career in forensics? Because that crack is EXACTLY the same in every picture.
- mingistech, on 10/12/2007, -13/+21I'd assume he already broke the T.V. at a drunken frat party and now is trying to cash in by claiming it was the wiimote.
I really don't think you can swing it hard enought to break the strap. - Toupee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Why is it so hard to believe the wrist strap can break? I might be calling fake myself but last night when playing Baseball (though admittedly not in a completely sober fashion) the EXACT same thing happened to one of our remotes. Someone lost their grip when pitching and the strap just snapped. Well, it hit the wall five feet away instead of my TV, but it made a hell of a scary noise and we had to tie a knot in the strap.
Good news is the remotes are pretty durable... the force of hitting a wall after breaking the wrist strap doesn't seem to damage them! - Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Rear-projection.
- dveight, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Yeah it sucks to be this guy for 2 reasons.
1: He now has a broken TV screen.
2: He is now being made fun of by thousands of people on the internet!
But really, he's not condemning the Nintendo Wii; he's pissed that the "safety" strap wasn't really safe and that it snapped. For people calling BS, take a look at the following link:
http://wii.ign.com/articles/745/745708p1.html
IGN's strap also broke. Yeah apparently the remote is well made and still works fine after being flung across the room, but hell, I would much rather replace a $40 remote over a couple of hundred dollars to get my screen fixed!
So people, stop digging people down because you don't want to believe that Nintendo can't have at least 1 or 2 defect in the 1 million or so remotes that they made. Face the fact that statistically, there will always be a couple of defective items in a batch.
As for why the screen was damage when other people have TVs that worst stuff has happened too them, think about it, how often do little things cause big problems. Ever drop a glass dish or cup and sometimes they break and other times they don't? - xLiKx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8yea, they mentioned this strap problem in IGN. it was on digg last week.
sweaty hands + cheap straps = flying wii-motes - Scott2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It was a rear projection TV, not a CRT. Way to read the article.
- Microdot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8amazing.... people make valid arguments on this story, like it might be possible to have ONE defective unit out of a few hundred thousand... and they are dugg down because its "anti-wii"
what a sad group.
buddy at gamestop said he had 4 customers already come back with broken wii-motes. one with a wrist strap and flung into a wall (no real damage) and the rest from basic damage.
but it cant be on digg, right? i mean... nintendo can do no wrong. - hasbeen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I also don't get why this is so hard to believe. I played at my friends house yesterday and the end of the strap that connects directly to the controller does seem kinda flimsy. After incurring high-tension shocks, I could easily imagine it breaking.
For the people saying that you're not supposed to throw the remote... well duh. However, the sole purpose of a wrist strap is to ensure that the remote doesn't go anywhere in case you do let go of it unintentionally. - aposter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Dude, the controller weighs next to nothing. A few ounces. It has 2 AA batteries in it and it weighs about the same as 2 more. If you could throw 4 AA batteries underhanded, remember it was the bowling game, through a screen protector then you are a fast pitch softball hero. The lanyard is a pretty tough synthetic thread so it would have done something to slow it down even if it was already frayed. For what the poster said happened to happen would require the most freak set of circumstances ever. I'm betting he bought a big screen without a service plan last year and decided to hoax some people sometime after it broke.
- thepolkapunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What does "trek your izzle" mean? I'm not trying to insult the vernacular, I just don't understand it at all.
- barney74, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Come on if your going to type it type it right. ID 10T error.
- chilekillr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thank god for that wristband or my friend would have a ton of holes through his wall and TV.
- Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think this picture says it all:
http://rook88.com/wiibreak/wiibreak7.jpg
I'm sure they were drunk or hopped up on something or are just little bastards throwing the remote as hard as possible. Get a life losers...and a new TV. - straxus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"the "gestures" are repetitive, high frequency stress."
But rapid button pushing isn't? Leave the sensationalist ***** to Jack Thompson, please. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7i agree back in the day when the horizontal hold went out what did we do........................................................... thats right smack the side of the tv as friggin hard as we could
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I never actually watched that video myself but I remember in the comments people were saying the wrist strap wasn't being worn in the first place--the strap broke when the controller hit the wall.
- Gemini25RB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Its from somethingawful. Lost all credibility by the URL.
- kusinagilamia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This happened to me to but it only hit the speaker on my plasma screen and it is the straps that come with the grip cases for the wii remotes it just pulled right out when i was playing baseball on wii sports
- tnwake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5RTFA.. it was a rear projection TV not a CRT
- ArmchairAthlete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I don't know how the strap cord itself could break, but it does tend to become loose during play. The little plastic tightener you pull up to your wrist always goes back down. Might still be fine though.
- saigumi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Sounds like someone didn't buy enough controllers. Or didn't feel like spending the second to slip their arm through the strap.
4 players = 4 controllers. Even works with Bowling and Golf that have one player at a time.
My 6 year old didn't put on the strap and launched the controller at my screen. It just bounced off. Seeing as how I bought the plastic Wiimote sleeve and my screen is a wall since I have a projector, no damage at all to Wiimote or my plaster wall. After being grounded from the Wii for the rest of the morning, he quickly learned how to put the strap on and hasn't forgotten since.
Freak accidents happen, but seeing as how this is posted on SA (which have the grand high masters of Photoshop and some hillariously questionable morales), I'm going to call Shenanigans. - jetblackstrat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Ummm just looking at the picture, I note that the cord part of the strap, the part hooking to the wiimote, looks completely different from the one that came with my wiimote... That strap looks thick and white, whereas the one that came on mine is thinner and gray. Not calling full BS just curious if there are different straps or something.
