- dbldn, on 11/25/2008, -0/+68Yes. But not if they keep releasing all of their games in November. Save some good games for other months guys!
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -1/+40It seems sales only drop when the quality of games drop or there's just a lack of selection. I'm no expert though.
- fluidfoundation, on 11/25/2008, -2/+39The game industry currently has more HP that the Dow.
- EvanVolm, on 11/25/2008, -1/+36Far from it. Just take a look at EA's most recent quarterly report, which noted a net loss of $310 million, not to mention they're eliminating 6% of their workforce(500-600 people). Midway lost $79.5 million. The reason this last quarter seems to be doing good is because of all the great games releasing around the same time.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -1/+28Video games are like the Roman Coliseum. Even as the empire was falling, people still went to see the shows.
- roctimo, on 11/25/2008, -0/+23It's escapism at it's finest...video games will thrive under these conditions.
- vtbarrera, on 02/03/2009, -0/+21Maybe not recession proof, as sales will dip because of the overall decrease of disposable income, but at the very least recession resistant.
- ChromeGhost, on 11/25/2008, -1/+21Hit Points?
- steve693, on 11/25/2008, -0/+19It's just like movies. Times are tough and people need a (relatively) cheap escape from reality.
On that note, I'm going to check if my Wow server it back up. . . - inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+19except now we're playing team deathmatches in the coliseum
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+18Or Barbie's pony adventure.
- hinmanj, on 11/25/2008, -1/+19Yes.
*crosses fingers* - houndeyex, on 11/25/2008, -0/+17Video games are cheap entertainment. Supposedly, people will turn to video games when things like vacations and expensive nights out go out of reach.
- LethalGeek, on 11/25/2008, -1/+17I wouldn't call those good examples. I can't remember the last time I heard Midway put out something great and EA got a lot of flack from the core gamers for Spore. Not to mention EA games are typically rehashed updates to old series that I certainly haven't touched in 6+ years.
- houndeyex, on 11/25/2008, -2/+18That's because EA's games blow. When times get tough, people say, "Do I really need Madden '09?" They conclude that, "No, I don't need Madden '09 because it's THE SAME GAME AS '06, '07, and '08!"
- tman84, on 11/25/2008, -0/+14Video games are an inexpensive way to entertain yourself. I spent 60 bucks on Halo last year and 60 on my live subscription. And have entertained myself for 120 bucks for pretty much all of 2008 with that game and subscription.
- bjs3171, on 11/25/2008, -1/+14EA's stock was about $23 right before the economy took a nose dive. It's now at $18. Not great, but slightly better than GM's $2.00
- Tsujigiri, on 11/25/2008, -0/+11During the Great Depression movie ticket sales soared, primarily because it was good, cheap entertainment that allowed the audience to lose themselves in an alternate world. Sound familiar?
If the gaming market can take it's lead from that paradigm I would imagine it will do well. - xOKxWhy, on 11/25/2008, -0/+11@Namco
Not only is your math horrible, the place where you shop rips you off. - trer, on 11/25/2008, -0/+9Why? He was one less person on the freeway, one less person in front of you in line and one less person taking up a parking spot.
- Namco, on 11/25/2008, -0/+9"Reply", not "Add a Comment".
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 11/25/2008, -0/+8I'll quit going to movies for 3 years to save money before I give up the opportunity to play gears of war 2, COD5, farcry2, and whatever other gems the future yields. I'm guessing I'm hardly alone on that.
- LMN8R, on 11/25/2008, -1/+9Incredibly popular games with established userbases of more than 10 million players selling millions on launch day is quite obviously an exception, not the norm.
When nearly every publisher out there is claiming losses and cutting workforces, the notion that the industry is "recession-proof" is an absurd, myopic view. - sexybobo, on 11/25/2008, -0/+7I spent $45 on Left 4 Dead and have already saved more then that due to me forgetting to eat meals while i am playing.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+7It was a good games month. That's about it.
- caulkrocket, on 11/25/2008, -0/+7Supreme government Blizzard will offer bailout packages to any game studio that goes under.
- Quaterni0n, on 11/25/2008, -1/+8The video games last longer. :)
- fluidfoundation, on 11/25/2008, -0/+7there you go.
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+7two words
DRM - corneliusJones, on 11/25/2008, -0/+7Ok, the 360 costs can be spread over years, plus you don't have to get the most expensive version, Live cost over a year, and each game over weeks if not months.
so yeah, compared to going to the cinema or out to eat or to a bar in money spent per hour, gaming is significantly cheaper.
still feel funny, funny man? ;) - designerutah, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6Compared to flying wife and 3 kids to another city, renting a car, hotels, eating out, etc. it IS cheap.
- gametavern, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6No. Layoffs have been catastrophic in Austin game companies.
- JCEEZ, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6Its wierd because I justify buying new games like this: Imma get this game for $60. Itll probably prevent me from going out a few nights, where I will probably spend ~$100 on booze and *****... so im saving money.
- savethejets, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6for a second I read porn adventure.
- Julie188, on 11/25/2008, -5/+11Playing video games, yes ... making them, probably not recession proof as buying news ones would be something that people cut back on.
- kingmanic, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6Entertainment tends not to suffer the same way other products do because demand is always there and prices are reasonable. The worse things get the more people want to escape and entertainment is usually reasonably priced.
- corneliusJones, on 11/25/2008, -0/+6except the best selling game of all time. but whatever.
- AmyVernon, on 11/25/2008, -4/+9You're not?
- MforMike, on 11/25/2008, -1/+6Nope
- oldhick, on 11/25/2008, -0/+5Or one acronym...
- OwdenBowden, on 11/25/2008, -1/+6But you Amy - are being *****.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4No.
I play games ALL the time, but if I have to take a paycut or having trouble managing bills, the first thing to go is going to be my games. I'll subscribe to gamefly and stop buying games altogether. - JCEEZ, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4unfortunately it often leads to getting a sack of the greenery
- inactive, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4I'd think they'd do even better during a recession. If I were just sitting around collecting unemployment, I'd have a lot more time to play video games.
- WhiskeyLemur, on 06/30/2009, -0/+4Movie tickets, 2 people, non-matinee shows: $24
Stale concession food: $10 minimum
That's over 2 MONTHS of WoW subscription, versus 2 HOURS of movie time (and you'll note I'm not even factoring the "dinner" part of "dinner and a movie" into that example). If anything, I'd say that games will do *better* than movies because you get more entertainment time per dollar spent. - jonshipman, on 11/25/2008, -1/+5How's Blizzard doing? Oh wait, no one has been able to contact them due to the mountains of cash continuously flowing from their building?
- cubicledrone, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4Well it sure as ***** isn't layoff proof.
- SoccerBoy, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4Buying a video game is cheaper than a lot of other activities. I don't play much during the summer when I have other activities outside to keep me from wasting my money. During the winter I buy and play a lot more to give me relatively cheap entertainment.
A game is about $60 and entertains me for weeks... a night at the bar is easily $100 and entertains me for a night...
Just my way of looking at it. - Griminald, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4True -- any financial issues facing certain companies right now won't have much to do at all with the recession we're in. Those issues were around for years, normally having to do with crappy games.
Gaming is one of the most-accessible hobbies available, and as far as entertainment goes, is pretty cost-effective.
Sales in everything will dip when the economy is in the tank, but people will still buy their games -- and parents will still do anything to keep little junior happy. - kinerry, on 11/25/2008, -0/+4stock price is never a good indicator as it's affected by investor speculation and emotion
