- coolboy0286, on 11/15/2008, -1/+32This is why Valve and Steam kicks ass.
- MCA2142, on 11/15/2008, -1/+30And they all claim that they too are gamers...
Bunch of *****. - apothekari, on 11/14/2008, -1/+27At a time when folks are trimming back cable, phone, internet, magazines, netflix,MMORPG, Hell in some cases even eating out at a restaurant, new clothing, going to the movies.
I think their plan ranks right up there with the wax wings of Icarus as a sound business model.
But, good luck with that.
{whispered under breath}...Jackasses - neocr0n, on 11/15/2008, -1/+22I will never play a subscription game.
- polalion, on 11/15/2008, -1/+22In other news, piracy increases as publishers ***** people who pay for games up their asses.
- MCA2142, on 11/15/2008, -0/+10I'm with you on this, but I must point out that Icarus' wings are a perfect example of what balance should be.
Too high, and the sun melts your wings.
Too low and the waves wets your wings.
It's Icarus that ***** up, by not listening to his father. There is nothing wrong with Daedalus' wings.
So in this case:
Take-Two = Icarus.
Prices on games = Wings.
flight method told by Daedalus = Sound business plan. - Sirocco, on 11/15/2008, -1/+11That's what you get for supporting DLC. We all knew this was coming; the industry has been testing the waters for the last few years throwing out DLC to see what people will buy. Soon you'll be buying a $60 'shell' of a game and paying through the nose to fill in the content.
- TheDuffManUK, on 11/15/2008, -3/+13UBER LAME
- Strongo, on 11/15/2008, -0/+10nothing would please me more than to pay MORE money for my games!
- Spire3660, on 11/15/2008, -0/+9Not every game needs Multiplayer.....
- Necoras, on 11/15/2008, -0/+8Methinks you are overly optimistic. That or underly pessimistic of the studios' greed.
- ZombieKiss, on 11/15/2008, -1/+8I can't remember the last time I had to pay for add-on content on the PC. Granted there have been a few things like the Episodes for Half-Life 2 and some minor stuff for Oblivion that you had to pay for, but I never felt ripped off and the community content was almost always better (and free). This "charge them for everything" mentality is crazy, mostly because I feel they're just selling us crap that should have been in the game to begin with.
- zendegany, on 11/15/2008, -0/+5They'll just lose even more customers to piracy.
- Zzone, on 11/15/2008, -0/+5no
- MiDri, on 11/15/2008, -0/+4The wax wing market has been hit pretty hard by the recession lately...
- kidwithsword, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Well, the episodes are in themselves independent games, not additional content, but it is true that you really don't need to pay for much on the PC. Valve is probably the best game company in the world simply because they don't charge you for extra content, like the new class weapons, maps, and achievements in Team Fortress 2. They know that they could be making loads in profit from that, but they are gamers too and they know that charging customers for extra content really brings down the company's reputation. I think it is total ***** that we have to pay full price for a game and then pay more to get the entire experience.
- ATLien74, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Just say NO to subscription based games.
- TheKillDoctor, on 11/15/2008, -3/+6and anything that requires WindowsLive just to play.
- harpoonhank420, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3straight up, people will stop buying your games
- minnepinne, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3I want to say no, but I might be wrong.
- Andrewbot, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3I heard there is a better offer at http://www.*****.com.
- crapuccino, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3You all know where this is going to end.
The game that you buy in the store will be designed to have the minimum acceptable content to sell it. Everything else will be in the form of add-ons.
I'm afraid I won't participating in this anal reaming on the part of the game vendors. - casemon, on 11/15/2008, -0/+3Allow me to translate this:
Our big hit titles are making us so much money, we want more of it. So we're REALLY open to the idea of taking all the things that make your favorite top games from us great, gutting them and replacing them with lame forced leveling mechanics because we're greedy bastards, and really, we don't give a ***** about you or your interests (aside from giving us more money). We like money more than anything. Did I mention we like money?
Of course, it doesn't sound like that when Zelnick uses business-flavored double-speak, but the message is the same. - ExRe, on 11/15/2008, -1/+3If that happens we won't be buying the game (or at least most of us won't).
Subscription based games would work for me a bit. Something almost like gamefly where you pay X per month to play Y games per month. I would rather pay $10/m for access to most games (about the only one I've played for more than a month is CoD4 in the past year or two). - 0tis, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Take Two aren't going to be the ones getting ***** up by this. Look how many people bought the new WOW. Less recently, look at how many people bought the new Half-Life 2 episodes.
If we're talking about paying over the odds, why not look how many people paid £400+ for a PS3 when they came out (not sure how much they were on launch in the U.S.). I'm not saying it's not worth it but that's twice the cost of a PS2, which, if I remember correctly was roughly twice the cost of a PSX on launch. And how expensive are the games? (I'm not just blaming Sony, let's not start a fanboy war)
To modify your analogy somewhat, game prices are like Icarus in as much as that they will keep going higher and higher despite pleas to the contrary - but I can't see them taking a fall anytime soon.
If DLC is managed well, and priced well, it can work - we've seen that with Half-Life 2. But the chances are, people are going to use this as an excuse to create less content, and, overall, make more money out of it. I can also see this affecting game quality - the obvious example would be plots being drawn out long past their sell-by date, because the company doesn't have to worry about getting the game wrapped up for release. - osukwm, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2the block button rules.
- Bunglish, on 11/15/2008, -0/+2Oh great, Take Two is going to turn into EA. Release a half finished game, and then release expansion packs to patch it up and add the rest of the game content.
- petard, on 11/15/2008, -2/+4Games for Windows Live is completely free now, and you aren't even required required to have an account to play.
What is so bad about it? - kinseyincanada, on 11/15/2008, -1/+2how is this different than WoW? yet everyone on digg loves Blizzard. WoW has what 40 milion something subscribers, almost all of them paying a subscription. Of course other companies are going to look into it. Does it suck? hell yea, the only reason i dont play WoW is because i refuse to pay $15 a month to play one ***** game.
- btnheazy03, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1I would agree to this, but these games simply don't offer as much content in the long run as other more traditional subscription based games, such as World of Warcraft. The scope and scale of GTA IV and Bioshock simply can't compare to that of WoW.
- nugx, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Where's my GTA MMO?
- aelias, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1"I can't believe you like money, too. We should hang out."
/Hail Frito! - smackjack, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1At least I don't have to subscribe to the HL2 episodes. I just pay for them once and that's it. Do you know how pissed people would be if Valve made people subscribe to games that end up getting delayed?
- DarkerMaster, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1I won't ever buy a subscription for a SINGLE game...please note that XBL offers access to hundreds of games
- Spire3660, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1HL2 episodes ARE NOT DLC. They are stand alone products. You do not need HL2 installed to play them. They were a (failed) experiment to put out content on a quicker timetable then a monolithic release.
- mtbterain, on 11/15/2008, -1/+2@ apothekari - I love the myth reference...and 100% agree with your point
- crapuccino, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Trust me. I won't.
- Juaquin, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1I pretty much only buy PC games on Steam now. If they're not available on steam, I'll just wait until they are. Most only take a couple months (Bioshock, etc).
- apothekari, on 11/20/2008, -0/+1Exactly what I was referring to.
Deadelus:
"Here's some wings son but don't overcharge or put out crappy content!"
Icarus:
"O.K. dad!" looks into sun."I bet it's shiny because of all the GOLD there!"
Deadelus:
"Facepalm" - Ogerilla, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Failed because of the length of time between "episodes"
- ilves7, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1yea, because they hate episodic content like Half Life 2: Episode 1, or Episode 2, or Episode 3...
- JudgeMonkey, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Stop spamming that crap and please die.
- Jones82, on 11/15/2008, -0/+1Video Games, Now 30% Costlier!
- opticwind, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1But everything in the article had nothing to do with requiring a subscription, that was the author's speculation.
- TheKillDoctor, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1you're correct, did not know they 'finally' made it free.
Thanks!! - inactive, on 11/16/2008, -0/+1WoW's a bit different because it requires a hell of a lot more support after release than other games to support the servers that 11M people play on every day, much like any MMO out there.
- DraxusD, on 11/16/2008, -1/+1They're probably rolling around in 100 dollar bills while they play their PS3
- NCg8r, on 11/15/2008, -1/+1Can I be Prometheus?
