- TheKitchenSinkX, on 03/06/2009, -35/+164The article is actually "Is Final Fantasy VII Overrated?"
So, yes. - ITdude472, on 03/06/2009, -14/+104I would say Earthbound or Chrono Trigger is the best RPG ever made.
- strafefire, on 03/07/2009, -9/+93Chrono Trigger FTW!
- APHughes, on 03/06/2009, -11/+87Final Fantasy 6 is the best ever made but my personal favorite is still Secret of Mana
- agentsrecord, on 03/06/2009, -19/+85Final Fantasy VII is overrated just as much as Final Fantasy VI is underrated.
- daridave, on 03/06/2009, -3/+61Indeed, I've got a list of SNES RPGs I would put above FF7... including other FF titles. But if anything I've learned in the past years, it's that as far as RPGs are concerned... you CANNOT make an "official" list... these adventures build a bond towards the player that is strangely very personal. The quests are long and the activity of building up experience, "leveling up", is something we do OUR WAY. Nobody dictates us how to do it, so we kind of set up our own play. There are also other variables, such as simply preferring the hero of one game versus another one, that can make all the difference in the world. I guess we can agree that it's up there in the list, but #1? I have to disagree... otherwise it wouldn't need (or should I say, we wouldn't be begging for) a remake. :) Then again, just my opinion... but I guess I've backed it up with some valid arguments.
- CreedFeed, on 03/06/2009, -12/+62The US version of FFIII on SNES is way better.
- Falldog, on 03/07/2009, -7/+48FFVII really changed the landscape of RPGs and despite what a lot would say, it's a damn fine game. Stop trying to over analyze and just enjoy it for the fun it is.
- bakagaigin, on 03/07/2009, -4/+45Final Fantasy VI !!!
- reed311, on 03/07/2009, -6/+41Final Fantasy 6 was the greatest Final Fantasy game.
- Pentatonic, on 03/07/2009, -2/+36If you're talking about underrated rpgs with epic story lines... look no further than Xenogears... a game that was pretty much owned by budget cuts (i'm looking at you disk 2) but still managed to convey its entire story despite all its monetary limitations.
it came out around the same time as FF7 but was put on the wayside due to its complex and (most likely) highly controversial narrative. it had 0 publicity and its budget was directly affected by the juggernaut that was FF7. hell, they had a hard time deciding to release it in the US. Europe didn't even see a release of the game. - subigo, on 03/07/2009, -4/+37Pitfall.
Wait...
No, I'm stickin' with Pitfall. - wolfing, on 03/06/2009, -7/+37Play a little thing called Planescape: Torment and then we'll talk.
- inactive, on 03/07/2009, -8/+36chrono trigger is much better
- yocouchdigga, on 03/06/2009, -2/+29may not be the best but Tactics and VII certainly captured my attention enough to turn me from a casual gamer to a regular and at times obsessive gamer. I'll always have a soft spot for them both.
- caddyalan, on 03/06/2009, -7/+33Until 1997, console RPGs were one of the nerdiest categories among gamers. It was said over and over again that they were slow, dull games with bad graphics.
I was so amazed when FF7 had genuine TV commercials. It was the game which convinced me to buy a PS1. It was enjoyable.
...But looking back, the experience of FF7 becoming popular was like watching my favorite indie band sell out. I know that's a jaded thing to say, but by the time FF8 arrived, I had long since moved on to other games (Lunar, Thousand Arms, Rhapsody, etc). - ijake, on 03/07/2009, -16/+40No, FFVI is.
- NeoTechni, on 03/06/2009, -31/+52Yes
- inhaler, on 03/07/2009, -4/+24Earthbound?
- teamr, on 03/07/2009, -2/+22BALDUR'S GATE
- UglieJosh, on 03/07/2009, -1/+21Also...
Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Lufia 2, Earthbound, FFIII (American release, FFIII [eng] or (eng) will help find it on, um, sites that help you find it), Morrowind, Fallout 2 and, dare I say it, Parasite Eve 1.
FFVII was great, but there were a lot better,
(((Edit: To say the original Kefka (not the more modern one) was, by far, more awesome then Sephiroth. Cloud was cool, despite the stupid name, but Sephiroth will NEVER touch Kefka.))) - qazws, on 03/07/2009, -8/+27I own 2 copies of FF7.
- IAmTheGuy, on 03/07/2009, -0/+18Completely different. Earthbound is great for its humor while Chrono Trigger is great for the story.
- mnortei, on 03/07/2009, -1/+19On the real, I think SNES RPGs were definitely some of the best. In a time when graphics weren't a major concern, they put far more into the "experience" and "gameplay." Though that's not to say games these days aren't to par, but man SNES games were just awesome in general. RPGs for the most part were my childhood, makes me nostalgist just thinking about it.
RoboTrek, Lufia, Tales of Phantasia, 7th Saga, Star Ocean, Chrono Trigger, Bahaumut Lagoon (one of my all time favs) ... to name a few epic games - FlareHeart, on 03/06/2009, -13/+31Final Fantasy VII was a good game, and I thoroughly enjoyed playing it...but it was definitely NOT the best RPG ever made...not even close. I love the RPG genre, and am impressed by what they managed to do with FFVII for the time, but several other FF games are better than VII. FFVI was great along with IV. They all had different game mechanics and flowed beautifully. To me FFVII is just another RPG. Give me something unique and original like Okami or Folklore and you have me hooked.
- inactive, on 03/06/2009, -13/+29Dragon Warrior 1 forever!
- NoamChimpsky, on 03/07/2009, -0/+16Um . . .
That must have lead to some major swamp ass. - bakagaigin, on 03/07/2009, -0/+16I like a man who sticks to his principles.
- macmcraeart, on 03/07/2009, -5/+20Chrono trigger - final fantasy VII - Lunar - chrono coss
- AzureRise, on 03/07/2009, -5/+20Wow, you're jaded man. "I love this *****! What, everyone else is into it now? This is stupid!"
- koenigje, on 03/07/2009, -0/+14Well I own 3, therefore am cooler.
- Zarokima, on 03/07/2009, -3/+17Final Fantasy IX is highly underrated, too. I actually liked IX more than VI -- so much so that I played all the way through in one really long sitting.
- 0reo, on 03/07/2009, -8/+22i'm in school for video game programming. this game literally is the reason i am where i am today. one of the best games ever.
- greensky, on 03/07/2009, -0/+14Well Baldur's Gate II... :P but both were GREAT RPG's and I would vote BGII as the best ever.
- DrBadfish, on 03/07/2009, -3/+164 and 6 are better than seven easy
- Infowarsdotcom, on 03/07/2009, -8/+21I played them all up through VII and quit because VII was so good everything else would leave me longing with a bitter emptiness, spending my nights lying awake cursed by visions of its glory...
- freshyill, on 03/07/2009, -8/+21It's good, but the game got repetitive. Once you left the city, it was basically a game of track Sephiroth to the next town, find out he's not there, rinse and repeat.
Oh, and sit through 10-minute spells a few hundred times. - inactive, on 03/07/2009, -0/+13Grandia
- Zarokima, on 03/07/2009, -1/+14By that logic Halo is also an RPG because you're playing the role of Master Chief. The Zelda series (except for Zelda II) has always been of the adventure genre, with some RPG elements.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role-playing_game_(vi ... - Zarokima, on 03/07/2009, -4/+17Except that it's not an RPG.
- darkestunborn, on 03/07/2009, -0/+13Xenogears.
That is all. - freshyill, on 03/07/2009, -0/+12Knights of the Round? That was FFIVII, right?
- garlicdeath, on 03/07/2009, -2/+137 was good, I'll give it that. However, I still think the story and overall game for FF4/6, Chrono Trigger, and Xenogears far out exceeds FF7. I can't help but feel that Square has lost their touch when it comes to the Final Fantasy series since their SNES days.
- bungoman, on 03/07/2009, -0/+114's story hasn't aged really well. I mean it's not bad, but even with the remake, which is a much better translation, it's pretty obvious the dialog all comes from a time when every byte was scarce so text had to be sparse.
- freshyill, on 03/07/2009, -0/+11Free with subscription to Nintendo Power!
- garlicdeath, on 03/07/2009, -3/+14No it wasn't.
- LordofChaosIori, on 03/07/2009, -0/+11Have you played Fallout 3? Replace "Sephiroth" with "Dad" and "10-minute spells" with "slow-mo headshots that are cool the first 10 times but then can't be turned off."
- AlphaDrake, on 03/07/2009, -2/+13Morrowind was infinitely better than oblivion.
- DarkLance, on 03/07/2009, -1/+11thats FFIII for all us US fans... Definitely the best of the series.
I play this through at least once a year, to this day
btw MAME for the win -
