- truspector, on 10/10/2007, -5/+85I spent about three hours with it last night and I have to say, so far, yes, it is the best this year, however, there are still some big games coming out before the holidays. It will definitely be a contender for GOTY, but it hasn't won yet.
- KnockoutNerd, on 10/10/2007, -3/+76Its August, everyone knows that the year ends in December.
- grat2001, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Waayyy to early to make that claim. But, I do think it's the first contender.
- xOKxWhy, on 10/10/2007, -8/+30Until Crysis
- TalkingBanana, on 10/10/2007, -3/+20How has no one mentioned Mass Effect?
- tentwentyfour, on 10/10/2007, -10/+26It's better than the Halo franchise, that's for sure.
To be honest, I don't understand why people go crazy over the Halo series. There is absolutely nothing special about it. It's a shooter. There's nothing innovative about it, the story-line is nothing special (alien invasion?). All in all, it's a pretty formulaic shooter. My reasoning behind why it's gained popularity is because most console shooters are ported from the PC, and in the transformation usually end up pretty crappy (bad controls, etc) and Halo ended up being very accessable for the average gamer. The multiplayer is a great aspect as it provides a quick way to shoot stuff (it's very fast-paced and much less tactical then games like GRAW) so it nails the ADD demographic. Single-player-wise, it's a very simplistic shooter. Point A to point B, shoot lots of aliens in between. Each Halo game is essentially the same recycled game (but hey, people keep buying, kudos to Bungie).
Basically, I don't see why people are so fanatical about the Halo franchise. In my experience, most of the Halo fans are - latova, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14Even if it isn't GOTY, its a welcome release to the shortage of games this summer.
- masterskill, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16It's fun.
That's about all there is to it. May not be fun to you, but it's pretty obvious it is to a lot of other people. - bhigh24, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Somewhat true, but you still have to use a lot of resources to kill a Big Daddy and those you don't get back.
- drachemorder, on 10/10/2007, -3/+14With point #2, I can't and won't accept activation and DRM at all, so I still refuse to buy the game. Let it be noted that I WOULD buy the game if it did not contain intrusive copy protection.
- nreynolds, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13ok, wageslaven, I get that you go on every 360 related article to defend it in any way, but SHUT UP. It IS annoying that widescreen is slightly worse than 4:3, it's not a huge deal, but it IS a problem. The limited install thing is also annoying. It's not a deal-breaker but it's a problem.
2K isn't perfect, the 360 isn't perfect, stop trying to make them perfect. And if they need anyone to defend them, it's not you. - MechaZain, on 10/10/2007, -8/+18It's an amazing game. The atmosphere and story may be one of the best of all-time. The vita-chamber resurrection is the only thing amiss here. I can beat up on a Big Daddy, die multiple times without consequence, and come back and finish him off. It makes the BD encounters not as gratifying and gives you little regard for your life. You're not rewarded for skill like very other game that's ever been made, so it makes the game more of an virtual interactive movie then a game. As such though, it's damn good.
Maybe it's just that 2K has found a whole new approach to gaming I'm not used to. I'll play some more before I judge. - latova, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Both games would not come out this year.
- Slybri, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Best game of 2007 So FAR!
- Dustmuffins, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Halo 3 and crysis still to come... this is a good time to be an FPS gamer =D
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12Don't they have to wait before 2007 is over before they declare the best game of 2007?
- Epacitythug, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14Damn, wait until all the other games come out first, then start making the calls
- lacronicus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7half life 2 got 35 game of the years despite what is considered by many to be one of the worst copy protection schemes ever. granted, most people love it today, but thats not the point. and even then, the drm is actually more lenient than most anyway, so ive missed your point entirely.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -14/+20That's a matter of taste. I'm going to say Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed will do better.
- taxman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Halo 3,MP3 and Mass effect are the only 2 games i see that can beat Bioshock for GOTY. But if we go by Gamerankings and the publishers previous history
Bioshock - 97%
Halo - 96%
Metroid Prime - 96%
KOTOR - 95%
Halo 2 - 95%
Jade empire - 90%
3 more great games yet to come in this year which are guaranteed to get to score in the 90s so let's not count out chicken till they hatch - MechaZain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6With this logic though, games should have everything unlocked and players should handicap themselves if they want a challenge. I'll do this on a second playthrough, but I shouldn't have to.
After playing it a lot more I love Bioshock for what it is, but I'm disappointed that the Big Daddies aren't as badass as they could have been if you were genuinely afraid of their power. - thebaron2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I just got the game for my 360 on widescreen and, honestly, the "widescreen glitch" is incredibly minor. You wouldn't even notice it if no one told you it was there.
I can't think of other problems you may be referring to - I'm guessing PC version - but that's my 2 cents on the 360 version as someone who owns it and plays it on a widescreen. - nonymous666, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5It's a game's job to challenge me, not mine.
- adrenaline33, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Halo has great multiplayer and a strong enough campaign mode to play just that. The story isn't amazing but it is addicting and the sound in the campaign mode is very engrossing. The multiplayer is incredibly fast-paced and the maps are all unique and pretty. Halo 1 was the big console FPS that everyone had been waiting for since Goldeneye. It gained a huge amount of fans because of that. Halo 2 wasn't anything revolutionary, but it was an improvement and it was the first game to be designed for online console multiplayer. Without Xbox live, it wouldn't have been a success but instead it was a huge success. Somewhere in that time it became cool to hate Halo. I really don't see why. Bungie is a great company and Halo 3 promises to be a great game. It might not be "innovative", but I'm willing to bet it will be the most fun game to play that comes out in '07 and thats why people are so excited about it.
- xerus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7The demo honestly isnt doing much for me. I know its the sequel of some well recieved games, but all I felt was "generic sci-fi fps" when I played the demo. The movies at the end with the various plasmids looked great, but what I experienced in the demo didn't leave me wanting more.
- Skanadian, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Agreed. Bioshock is much more innovative than Halo will ever be.
- GeekyGerge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Confirmed video evidence - http://tinyurl.com/37vdhf
- kevptim, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Somewhere in your post you misspelled Crysis.
- BlackKnight6, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5As a 12 year PC gamer (love FPS's and RPG's and the hybrids like Deus Ex) and starting with the Atari for consoles, I will say Halo 1 was innovative, I dropped my PC games when that game came out. What? You can only hold 2 weapons? Oh I see need to pick and choose what I think I will need. Recharging health? Oh cool, now I can use cover and collect myself if I get too messed up. AWESOME, I don't have to switch to grenades to throw them! Oh I can punch with out switching weapons too, sweet! Vehicles with multi-player seats? That's cool as hell. Coop? This is so cool, I can plan with a friend against the computer!
These were the things I thought of that I didn't have on the PC at the time and they were innovative. Halo 2 brought only a few minor things, some things I disliked and eventually stopped playing, online at least. I am still a big time PC gamer with about 85 GB of games installed on my XP install alone, so I still consider myself a PC gamer. But I think people just hate Halo for the popularity, MS association, or a combination of both. I will tell you what, I don't care what you guys think, because I am gonna have a blast with the PC and 360 games coming no matter how much hate there is.... - Zaggynl, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What innovative thing did bioshock implement?
Apart from awesome graphics?
Granted, it looks very good, it has an interesting story, but it doesn't really bring anything new.
No multiplayer, linear and scripted environment, fun stuff with physics, few different types of enemies, no inventory or skillsystem.
Dumbed down controls and interaction (ugh console games).
As a spoiled gamer, I must say, meh.
Oh, and the copy protection scheme doesn't sound appealing either.
I guess building upon known and succesful ideas is less risky for game developers, but please, try to experiment some more.
Especially mixing different game types, such as rts/fps, such as classics like dungeon keeper, those were a lot of fun to play. - MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+4Hold your judgment until you've played it.
Mass Effect looks like the game I've always wanted, but if the gameplay is too short, that will ruin it. - evilevil, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4um have you heard of crysis?
- killjoi, on 10/10/2007, -10/+14After playing for several hours, I kind of doubt it. It's a solid FPS with an above average story. Certainly worth buying and playing through multiple times. However, I get the feeling that if this is the pinnacle of gaming this year, it's slightly underwhelming. I mean, I'm torn between playing Bioshock and Rune Factory. Which I know is not game of the year material :P
- SSCrow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I love when people say Halo is not innovative.
Its hilarious. Seriously.
Halo 3 has not been released yet, so you don't know whats Bungie is going to give us.
Compared to Halo 2? which was 3 Years ago, Bioshock is more innovative. But thats 3 years ago.
Bioshock is a great game, I just stopped playing it like 2 minutes before checking digg.
Honestly, I think people just hate Halo because its so Popular. - kenyon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think you should turn the question on its head and ask "Is 2007 the best year for games ever?"
BioShock, Halo 3, Crysis, Hellgate, Assasins Creed - all good. - dillibob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4halo 3? i mean ill play it and probably enjoy it but i seriously doubt it. with games like crysis and mass effect coming out i think those will be better
- MrFisty, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Great. Another "we love Halo/we hate Halo" argument.
You know, last time I checked, games were meant to be fun. - nonymous666, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I think that's the reason for the Vitachambers. It's allowing you find out that a particular combination of plasmids, tonics whatever isn't working for the current situation (hence you die). So they let you resurrect and then go and 'reconfigure' your resources and then try again.
Thus, punishment to losing fights isn't death, it's using up resources. To not let you resurrect would mean that you just reload and try again - But then you'd have all your resources still which in the end can be actually easier since it's argued you're not losing anything that way - no life, no resoures.
I'm not saying I agree with this; only that's what I think the designers' reasoning may be. - battletrax, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4oh yeah its so overhyped. Thats why its the most played online console game to date.
lets see killzone has uhh 135 players online ok... halo 2 after 3 years 250,000... what?
at the beginning almost 4 million people were playing halo 2 online. - FoxtrotYankee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Anyone think he's talking about something besides Assassin's Creed?
- Zettabyte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3And Episode 2, TF2 and Portal.
- digdugdog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I didn't see any such declaration. They said it was a contender.
- UberC, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Um, no.. Mass Effect.
- Microdot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3you mean the market that has more of an install base than all game consoles combined?
yeah. we will. thanks. - BlackKnight6, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I love how people say Halo 3 isn't revolutionary enough and how the game is same old Halo and blah blah blah when the ***** game isn't even out...
- lacronicus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2thats the idea, this game was a social commentary. like many before it, the game could be just a game if you choose to see it that way, but the underlying meaning is far more. that is why this game is considered to be art. if all you found disturbing about this game was that, you have some issues. for me, the entire game was as disturbing as reading some of the old classics of literature. video games are simply the next step of art, but only if we remember that they are.
- evillawngnome, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Exactly what i came in here to say. Mass media pulls this ***** every year, "The top (5, 10, 25,100) (games, movies, musicians, toys) of the (year, decade, millennium)" and they push this turd out earlier and earlier every year. IT'S AUGUST.
- IceX, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3lol , when it comes to FPS games even the original CS is still the most played, then maybe CS Source.....and even after halo 3 comes out....CRYSIS > Halo 3
- HerrSchnuff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Just shut up already
- knetworx, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, there have been complaints about the PC version (and about the widescreen issue). However, I've been playing the PC version (and last night I played it on my widescreen monitor), and I haven't had any problems yet. I think most of the PC issues are because people are retarded and tried to play on computers that didn't meet the requirements or they didn't follow the advice of "download the updated drivers". I'm sure some of the problems are legitimate non-stupidity issues, but that goes for any PC game. The hardware isn't standard and thus can have many variations. It's hard to test for them all. The widescreen issue really isn't noticeable hardly at all. Most of the time you're not being attacked from above or below, so you're not going to miss anything that you need to see. That's my two cents.
