- toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -8/+214Nintendo was smoking "Wiid"
- handshakedrugs, on 10/12/2007, -22/+201Nintendo Wii? More like Nintendo WTF.
- CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -22/+193While I wouldn't make my purchasing decisions based on a product's name alone, Nintendo could have surely done better. What was so wrong about keeping the name Revolution? It's a great name, and fitting. Wii means bugger-all to me.
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -8/+135I hope none of you mind if I continue to call it the Revolution. Forever.
- tocksin, on 10/12/2007, -12/+111Just don't get two of them. or else you'll have weewee.
- rohcky, on 10/12/2007, -55/+153Because xbox and playstation are such fabulous names.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -9/+90Revolution was the perfect name for the console, there's no reason they should have changed it
This is incredibly stupid, what was Nintendo smoking? - RstyShackleford, on 10/12/2007, -11/+85WWII? Didn't the Japanese lose that one?
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+70So you think the Nintendo controllers are going to be called Wiimote contwollahs?
- valkraider, on 10/12/2007, -18/+76Man, no one has mentioned this yet?
AND WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

(slightly not work safe) - paularms, on 10/12/2007, -6/+58This makes me cry.
As a discussion ensued with a friend... They had the NES, the Super NES...
Why don't they call this the AwesomeNES (awesomeness)? - thenativeraver, on 10/12/2007, -6/+53Don't mind me I'm just playing with my wii.
- PastimeGamer, on 10/12/2007, -11/+57Well I thought the Xbox 360 was a dumb name but that didn't stop me form getting one. :)
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -6/+48If they were trying to consider both markets for pronunciation (In Japanese, Revolution is "re-bo-ru-shi-on" then "Nintendo Go" would have beenm a good name. In Japanese, "go" means "five" and this is the fifth Nintendo console. In English, well, "go" is a common word which still kinda represents Nintendo's direction.
They had the chance to two-up Sony's PlayStation3 by calling it the Nintendo System 5 (which is why Xbox 360 was not called Xbox 2). - erhino, on 10/12/2007, -45/+85do you realize that your screen name is "hollister"? - - possibly one of the worst brands in history? purely marketed towards the myspace-follow-the-leader-I'll-buy-ripped-up-jeans-for-hundreds-of-dollars-just-because-someone-else-thinks-its-cool?
if thats your family name, well then, i take it back, but otherwise, eh.
Wii is marketable and memorable and unique enough that people will only associate it to the system and not anything else...every system is named in a weird way....before the XBOX came out, had you ever heard that word?
.02 - fluffebunnie, on 10/12/2007, -15/+51Digg sucks as far as people expressing their opinions goes. You will conform to the popular opinion or we will censor you! Fear the iron fist!
"It rubs the Wii-Wii on its skin or else it gets the hose again." - trogdor282, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34Heh, with the new controller, you can use your Wii to swordfight!
- RyeBrye, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34I think they went with the name "Wii" because it's something that - no matter what language you speak - you can hate.
- JeffreyAtW, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37http://revolution.nintendo.com
- vileS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30http://revolution.nintendo.com
I'd say it's pretty damned official. - s1lentslayer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31I foresee many who's on first problems in France. Nintendo Wii? Oui Oui.
- sheesh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29I heard it came down to a choice between "Wii" or "Bowl of Dicks". I guess Wii is better.
- rmal, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34So what if people think Wii is a dumb name? I thought Playstation, Xbox, and Gamecube were dumb names but I still bought them. As long as there are awesome games, people will forget about the stupid name in a week.
- bobertfishbone, on 10/12/2007, -9/+32I'm sure of course you mean "no, no. WII at http://WiTendoFi.com are the Nintendo WTF people :)"
- zukeft, on 10/12/2007, -12/+35Wii? Isn't that what you do in a bathroom?
- handshakedrugs, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32Actually, after reading the official explanation, I can see where they're coming from and what they're trying to do. But I predict there's going to be a huge backlash from many gamers. We're going to hear a lot of "I'm not buying that, it's got a stupid name."
- emil1212, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28Honestly everyone, get a damn hold of yourselves. Everyone gonna still call it a "Nintendo."
- deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25HOWTO Design a crappy name for a good product:
1) Pick a word that you can't easily prononce by looking at it. Bonus points for including redundant vowels.
2) Pick a name that says absolutely nothing about your product. The vauger, the better.
3) Pick a name that sort of sounds like slang for the male penis.
4) ???
5) PROFIT. - gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -9/+29no, no. We at http://WiTendoFi.com are the Nintendo WTF people :)
- Poddo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24Sucks to be the Wildlife Institue of India or the Washington Internship Institute. (google: wii)
- Nowheredan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Nintendo Go sounds much cooler in retrospect. Can we go back to that?
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20WAIT! NOW I GET IT!!!
They warned us about this!
Remember "Touching is good"? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+30funny, in a few years, you all will be saying how great and fitting of a name it is. these are the same people who said kingdom hearts was gonna be crap because of disney characters and that wind waker was gonna be crap because of the cartoony appearance. i think the name is quite different, so it is coming as a shock, but once it settles in, it will be very acceptable
- akuzemchak, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24Nintendo explains the name at http://revolution.nintendo.com/. Pronounced "we"? It better be a freakin' cool system to make up for the lousy name.
- kingsway, on 10/12/2007, -16/+33Wii would have been a great name if we hadn't been calling it Revolution for so long.
- Dingo128, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Seriously? Wii is going to be the name? People in Japan complain that the xbox, and now the xbox360 are catered to a western audience. Wii sounds like Nintendo of Japan did not talk to Nintendo of America to see how this would play out to a US, and European audience. The revolution code name was edgy, it sounded sleek, and sexy. It made people of all ages excited for the next Nintendo console.
I can imagine it now... "So Fred what did you do last night"? "Well I went to Bill's house to play with his new Wii" (we).
Yeah that sounds pleasant.
I know the hardware has not changed, and so the excitement that the new console had before should not change. I just can not see admitting to play with my new Wii in public. Oh the questions that this is going to cause. - stogey25, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25I'd like to know what the name means before I judge it entirely, although I do agree that my first impression is anger and disgust. If people ask me what I'm going to be doing, I don't want to say "Playing Wiiiiiiiiiiiii."
Either way, saying you won't buy what will likely be an awesome console because of the name is kind of extreme. - TiMMY8765, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21I plan on continuing to call it the Revolution until a better name is invented.
- kramit, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Ok, what people have to realise is that nintendo are nuts but are always right.
Analoge 3 pronged controller....WTF?.....Mario 64, ahh, makes perfect sense!
Controller with 3 shoulder buttons and funky colours?....WTF?.....you hold one, ahh, makes perfect sense now!
Is that a game and watch with a touchscreen?....WTF?....Warioware.... ahh, i get it now!
A one handed controller?...WTF?..... position tracking you say?....ahh, makes perfect sense!
Calling the next console Wii?....WTF?.....six months later..................
see a trend forming yet?
Nintendo know what they are doing and i have faith in every single one of thier crazy ideas - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Nintendo What?!
Seriously, let's be honest: most people will call this the Nintendo "Why". Two i's will just confuse them a little but, in the end, they won't come to the conclusion that it is pronounced "wee".
And besides all that... Nintendo We? Lol...
I agree with the posters above. It is Nintendo Revolution to me! - multivariate, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18This is what happens when the marketing department runs amock. Someone should have given them more busy work.
- GernBlanston, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18What about a group playing together, "Wii Wii"?
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20I guess they didn't really take the US market into consideration when deciding on this name. The sysem looks cool, but this name is not going to help it any.
- EricBoyers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19We are the knights who say, "Wii".
- wai_xing_ren, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20No.
It's still the Revolution.
I don't care what Nintendo or anyone else says. I'm calling it Revolution. - hanshasuro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16This sums up everyone's reaction in one word:
http://revolutionname.ytmnd.com/ - igjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14This little 360 went to the market, this little PS3 stayed home, this little DS has lite, this little psp has none, and this little Nintendo went Wii Wii Wii, all the way home.
- Jangles, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18I agree. I hope the EB employees wont look at me funny when I ask if they have any new Revolution games out by this time next year. :
- dWhisper, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26I'm rather iffy about the name, but Nintendo has a knack for making the absurd rather normal. We don't know the context yet, and that's usually the catch of their items. Once it's out there, I'm sure we'll go whoa... it all makes sense.
And I'd probably just call it the revolution anyway. - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20HOLY ***** that is a bad name.
everyone, everywhere in marketing should know that if the name can't be pronounced simply by the target market instantly by looking at it, it is a bad name. -
