- ZenMojo, on 10/23/2007, -2/+17Don't you mean 459 dollars?
- loganhid, on 10/22/2007, -2/+16you mean on the Kojima team
- spiderman5178, on 10/22/2007, -1/+14Q: How did Konami take to your ideas?
They’re pretty receptive. Mr. Kojima recognizes that until now they’ve always had a 100% Japanese team. So it’s inherent that their game’s going to be more appealing to the Japanese, or feel better in terms of control and game balance. So that’s one of the reasons he brought me on two and a half years ago, to give the studio and the team a different perspective.
I’m lucky that he’s given me so much power and leeway in terms of what I want to do. As far as the control scheme in MGS4, I’ve been telling people that there are no sacred cows. We’ve been reworking the control scheme since the inception of the game. So no more bird’s eye view, the gunplay finally feels good, it’s never felt good in an MGS game. So we’re incorporating a lot of game ideas and I’m really lucky that Mr. Kojima is receptive to it, so I think I’m going to keep my job. - Synthesize, on 10/22/2007, -5/+18This is the #1 reason I own a PS3 in the first place. I can't wait for this, I'm sure this will be an amazing conclusion to the series.
- johnnyutah001, on 10/22/2007, -5/+17and it will be worth it
- CTK14A, on 10/22/2007, -17/+28The problem with MGS4 is that it's going to cost me $560 dollars.
- waynethegreat, on 10/22/2007, -2/+12How many people at Kojima actually speak English?
- bigbadgoat, on 10/22/2007, -3/+13In your ***** dreams. The game will require 6 dvd-9s. 6. Think about that. Especially if the game has any back-tracking (which MGS typically has had) then it is NEVER going to happen.
- nreynolds, on 10/22/2007, -0/+9at least one.
- lardoandkeg, on 10/22/2007, -1/+9They aren't dumbing it down. He said that they are adding a reference section for people that want to get up to date on the story and understand. He says that questions will be answered...where are you getting "DUMBED down" from?
- Soapskid, on 10/22/2007, -6/+13Nice!
- lardoandkeg, on 10/22/2007, -5/+11@ Jman4183
Yeah, the fact he just flat out says that he isn't interested in the movie, that isn't what he got involved in the industry for. He seems pretty ballzy. - MrInquisitive, on 10/22/2007, -0/+6I'm going to guess 2, since someone has to be able to translate back and forth between Ryan and the others.
- ZenMojo, on 10/22/2007, -2/+7He didn't sound that cocky. All he changed was the dialogue of the cutscenes and the gunplay.
- scallon, on 10/22/2007, -3/+8Yeah he kind of rubbed me the wrong way. The franchise is already a blockbuster, and the story is amazing if you aren't too lazy to follow it. I would like to update the controls, but other than that i never had an real problems with the game.
- Jman4183, on 10/22/2007, -5/+10cool interview, very candid.
- Sabin76, on 10/22/2007, -0/+5Being an English teacher in Japan, I can tell you that most Japanese can't "speak" English for *****. Yes, they learn English for 6 years in Junior High and High School, but they only learn grammar. They don't really learn any practical English, and they certainly don't practice conversation. There are only a few in each class that are really interested in English and have the drive to learn how to speak.
That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if much of the MGS team are quite proficient with English. I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't either...*shrug* - Rayonic, on 10/22/2007, -3/+8Actually, you could rent a PS3 for a week.
- roxya, on 10/22/2007, -1/+6A lot of PS3 owners, like myself, don't give a ***** if it gets ported or not. That it's being developed FOR the PS3, and not ported to the PS3, is more than good enough. I won't need to play a game with compromised graphics, gameplay, or anything else.
- Tactis, on 10/22/2007, -4/+9if GTA4 wasnt coming out the same year i would agree but since it is that game will beat MGS4 in hype and sales.
- MasterPlayer, on 10/22/2007, -1/+6I was very confused when I read your comment, since you replied to Soapskid's comment of "Nice!" yet it has nothing to do with it.
- FuQboiroi, on 10/22/2007, -1/+5Almost all of them. English is a required course in school from 5-12. But they dont like to spealk english so they dont.
- chocobomog, on 10/22/2007, -1/+5He means "Kojima Productions" the studio, not Hideo Kojima the man.
- Vicujozobenaxod, on 10/22/2007, -6/+10After seeing gameplay footage, there's every reason to be confident. It's one of the best game series of all time.
Since MGS hit, I put this above almost anything any other console has ever put out, in story and action. The bar is reset every time. - ericrous, on 10/22/2007, -0/+3You're right. The less it appeals to American gamers, the more likely the 360 will continue its lead. God forbid anyone associated with Sony or the PS3 break their two year streak of bad decisions.
- shinythingy, on 10/22/2007, -4/+7Kojima's a guy. Unless he has imps living in him, its only him.
- chocobomog, on 10/22/2007, -1/+4Hideo Kojima owns a studio called "Kojima Productions". So asking "how many people work at Kojima" is like asking "how many people work at Disney". They referring to the studio, not the person.
- ViperX116, on 10/23/2007, -5/+8Guess you've never met a lot of people in your life then.
- iRoy, on 10/23/2007, -4/+7Joke of the day right here.
- drizzlelicious, on 10/22/2007, -4/+6That's some amazing confidence. I love it.
- BabyWookie, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2I enjoyed MSG quite a bit, but sort of gave up on the series after the pretentious cut-scene gayness that was MGS2. I honestly cannot believe how that game managed to score such great reviews. I simply hated it with passion.
- toppgun, on 10/22/2007, -4/+6only if i dont want to replay MGS2 and MGS3
- grumbel, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2Kojima wanting to work on a Wii game doesn't mean he wants to work on a Metal Gear game on Wii, likely quite the opposite, after a decade of Metal Gear you'd guess he might want to do something different..
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -6/+8I bought my PS3 for this game alone. Hickeroar, your sample base is too small.
Like your penis. - thecheatah, on 10/23/2007, -5/+7WhAT?? and you call your self a gamer?
- LiLPeanut80, on 10/22/2007, -6/+8I can't believe how much this guy said in the interview. He almost sounded like he didn't like the other Metal Gear Solid games. Especially since it sounded like he came in and started changing everything.
- lebaige, on 10/23/2007, -0/+2I've never played a Metal Gear game ever, and have no intention of starting now. What I've seen of this game from an outsiders perspective leaves me completely underwhelmed.
- hockey, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1That dude in the second screen shot must've taken the old spice "manly" challenge
- ericrous, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1Well, at least it will sell in Japan.
- lardoandkeg, on 10/22/2007, -4/+5buried you for being a hater.
- inactive, on 10/23/2007, -4/+5how am i gonna light up my cigarette? i wish there was a big pocket rrod
- bormon, on 10/22/2007, -0/+1I love the MGS series. I got the games, the art books, the figures etc.
However even I can admit that the control system needed to be looked at and the dialogue always did come off a little anime. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not but I always wanted an MGS game that felt a little more epic....a little more "Hollywood". - Causality, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1I for one and not going to spend hundreds of dollars for this game. I've watched the videos of gameplay graphics look like on par with the 360. More Sony domination starts with this game crap.
- xxbrighteyed, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1clearly noone reads hyper
- DangerStepp, on 10/23/2007, -0/+1Payton fails to mention the fact that there will be NO demo on PSN before the game drops. That doesn't help matters.
- rhinoceroz, on 10/22/2007, -2/+2"Four hours of cinematics." No thanks.
- bormon, on 10/22/2007, -1/+1Are you serious? Saturday morning cartoon? Lame Gimmicks? I think you just described Ratchet & Clank to a tee.
Funny that you would spend time reading this article and learning things about MGS4 not mentioned in this article when you don't like the series.
PS. I like the Ratchet & Clank games! - lardoandkeg, on 10/22/2007, -4/+4haha
- bormon, on 10/22/2007, -1/+1I'm not sure he made mention of dumbing down the story. Like you, I always loved the stories in the games. However the dialogue was always a little anime, as Ryan Payton put it. It's cool but just a little cheesy at times.
It's kind of like the prequel trilogy for the Starwars films, I appreciated the story that was being told, but the dialogue was always a little cheesy. -
