- Foliot, on 09/26/2008, -14/+47***** DRM. ***** DRM up it's stupid ass.
-Magnolia-Fan - MikeSobe, on 09/26/2008, -0/+25Glad to see that there an increase in companies who supply DRM-free digital distribution.
- beerio, on 09/26/2008, -0/+20This is not only a good business idea (look at all their cool games! Man, talk about nostalgia...) but also a very effective way to show the "big" publishers that no-DRM stuff can work. I'll be buying games off this service, even if I don't need them, just to support the principle.
I would have bought Sins of a Solar Empire for the same reason, except it was such a good game I definitely needed it :) - wingmanjd, on 09/26/2008, -0/+18GoG is such an easy way to get some great classics. I already purchased four games from them with more to come in the future. I love it!
- RondelSpears, on 09/26/2008, -0/+10It's great to hear that someone isn't threating me like a potential thief. I don't like DRM, especially when it comes to online activation etc. I bought Fallout 1 and 2 at GOG.com, and I'm happy with it. After downloading from the site, game was mine. Simple installer, no CD's, no DRM, and I can download it as many times as I want. Great initiative.
- CalcProgrammer1, on 09/26/2008, -0/+9DRM does the complete opposite of its intended purpose. Period. This is true. Spore proved it. EA put restrictive DRM on Spore to "combat piracy" but all it did was make Spore the most pirated game ever. Many willing-to-pay users torrented it just so they could get a copy that didn't need the insane registration. I purchased the game but torrented an installer so I could use it on other PC's, let friends play, etc, the kinds of things customers expect to have when they purchase a game (what EA does is equivalent to what you get when you rent a game!).
- Clbull, on 09/26/2008, -0/+9DRM is stupid because its meant to combat piracy yet it bends over the consumer. Lets take the SecuROM DRM used in Spore as an example. It didn't stop piracy of the game that much but it caused outrage amongst many who actually put money into EA's pockets, just so they can install the game upto 3 times and ONLY have 1 Spore account per copy, despite what it states in the manual.
It makes piracy look more attractive which is a BAD thing for the companies. - twertyto, on 09/26/2008, -1/+9Slightly off topic but....
Does anyone know if Will Wright has made any comments regarding how EA has handled the release of Spore? I gotta think is awfully upset about all this DRM bs. - artfiend77, on 09/26/2008, -0/+7That is an excellent question.
- Shady81, on 09/26/2008, -2/+9***** DRM.
- JamesBrown, on 09/27/2008, -0/+6I should think that Will Wright would have an opinion given the strong backlash in the gaming community and the damage EA's DRM has done to sales of his game. And it's not uncommon for a creator to speak out against his or her publisher.
- BN2L, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5Think about it. Will Wright isn't going to say anything that might jeopardize his (very lucrative) relationship with EA.
- ChaoticInfinity, on 09/26/2008, -0/+5I'm a proud member of GoG (just got into their beta program this week)... and I'm hoping their site takes off. It's rare that a company offers a product with an emphasis on service, support, and community than solely on maximizing profits. Even if this is the case for just the first few years, I'm happy to support it now while it lasts.
- maus56, on 09/27/2008, -0/+4Agreed. I just picked up Freespace. Great site.
- InfernoX, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4The main issue I have with steam myself is that Valve ( as stated in the terms of service) can deactivate your account whenever they want to. Doesn't help that Valve is always talking about "Games as a service" in interviews.
- inactive, on 09/26/2008, -0/+4It's 5 different machines, BUT... SecuROM seems to notice any hardware change and calls it a different machine. Example... if you put a stick of RAM in, it uses an activation. If you take the RAM out, there's another activation.
Steam ***** rules. It's like a virtual box to keep all my games in. I never have to touch a disc again. - dukdukgoos, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3I bought a game from them. Great idea and love the no DRM policy.
- inactive, on 09/27/2008, -1/+4You've never heard of PDFs have you?
It stands for Pedobear Data Finder and it will ***** you up. - InfernoX, on 09/26/2008, -1/+4If GoG Supports paypal I will most certainly use it.
- JamesBrown, on 09/27/2008, -0/+3we should do "DRM" like they did in the old days:
"Please enter the forth letter of the third word of the eight paragraph of the ninth page of your manual to continue" - stretch611, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2Actually that was annoying as well.It meant that you had to have the manual next to you at all times.
I remember the old SSI Gold Box D&D titles use this type of copy protection. They also came with spinning symbol disks to match up the symbols and pick the letter shown in the window. Also, they would have quests, "Read quest Chap3.q2 in the manual" - Mookie5, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2I hope GoG has or will get Star Control. ooooh yea.
- BugMeNot2, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3Spore, I'm pretty sure, is 5 activations on different machines.
You can reinstall Spore on the same machine and not use up an activation, since it's already activated.
And Steam is not restrictive. You can install your Steam games on any computer and play them. For example, I went to my cousin's house, logged into Steam using my account, and installed Audiosurf and played it through a simple download-then-play procedure. And you don't have to be logged into Steam to play your games--Steam has an offline mode. - ErickStevenson, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2Wow I miss Giants Citizen kabuto... I loved that game! And Sacrifice another fun game... I would buy those 2 games again if the multiplayer community for Giants were bigger.
- MCA2142, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2MDK!!!
- scabbers, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2I don't think they have the consumer/gamer's interests at heart... more like they're desperately trying not to piss EA off and lose advertising.
- Zarokima, on 09/26/2008, -0/+2unfortunately I couldn't find anything through Google, but if you find an answer you should post the article here (erm, here as in on Digg as another story, not just in these comments).
- TamerzIsMe, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3With Steam I can install all the games I bought on all my computers as many times as I want. Not sure if there is a limit to the number of computers, but I haven't hit it yet.
Spore you install 3 (or I think they actually jumped it to 5 now) times period and then it will no longer activate without calling them. - Klak, on 09/26/2008, -1/+3http://penny-arcade.com/comic/2008/9/24/
- atezun, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2Just so you know, there are actually useful reasons for renting furniture.
- stretch611, on 09/27/2008, -0/+2Fade back in time to "Alkabeth" which was packaged in a plastic baggie with a small instruction sheet. (Which was a 5.25" disk at the time.)
However I do not remember being told to backup 3.5 inch disks. - WhiteHamster, on 09/28/2008, -0/+2... yes.
I would seriously buy everything from this site a thousand times over to send a message. Well, maybe just every game once... that's more reasonable - inactive, on 09/27/2008, -1/+2This is madness...
- kinseyincanada, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1is the DRM on Spore only three installs total or is it unlimited installs but only on 3 serperate machines? Also why do people praise Steam when it also has restrictive DRM? dont you have to sign in and then you can get your games.
- inactive, on 09/28/2008, -1/+2Dugg Right Man, Don't Right Madness, Donkey's R Myfriend, Didyou Really Meanthat?, Dildosinmyass R Magnificent!
- AmazingSteve, on 09/26/2008, -0/+1Remember back in the day when games came on multiple 3.5" discs and there was usually a sheet of paper advising us to backup the discs before installing them?
- twertyto, on 09/28/2008, -0/+1Well, I did do an extensive Google news and the only thing I came up with (don't remember the link) was dated somewhat recently and mentioned that Will hadn't made any public statements about the DRM issues. If I can back track and find it I'll post it.
- BN2L, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1Yes but there's a difference between the hardcore gaming community (who are pissed) and the casual community (wots DRM?). He should say something but he won't, he's made it quite clear in interviews that he's all about the money these days and doesn't really care about hardcore gamers and correct me if i'm wrong but we are talking about the most lucrative creator/publisher combo ever (Sims 2).
Anyway despite DRM issues Spore has sold a ***** of copies, rather than being upset EA and Will Wright are laughing all the way to the bank, the bastards.
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3170143 - ChaoticInfinity, on 09/27/2008, -0/+1it does
- yohan, on 09/27/2008, -1/+2@InfernoX
No. - GSocling, on 09/28/2008, -1/+2I got Freespace 2 (as I loved the first one + expansion) and something called Original War that I've never heard of but is highly recommended.
GoG is an idea who's time has come. Between this and Steam, I really don't want to buy a boxed game, ever ever again. - Skyview, on 09/28/2008, -1/+1Those were the days... I remember asking my dad several times to copy 500+ pages manual at work...
- deathkitten0, on 10/09/2008, -0/+0however, you shouldn't support Paypal:
http://www.aboutpaypal.org
http://www.paypalsucks.com - InfernoX, on 09/27/2008, -3/+2Spore proved that gamers can be very spiteful and have a feeling that their "entitled" to play games.
Don't like the DRM, then don't buy the game! Eventually EA will realize they're losing sales and smarten up. But what the hell makes you people think you can pirate the game BECAUSE it has DRM?
If you're going to pirate a game do it for the right reason. Because you are a pirate and a pirate is free!!!!! - kinseyincanada, on 09/27/2008, -2/+1ok so five installs in my opinion is more than enough although it seems like they need to work out the kinks so that no matter what my computer will always allow it not matter if i upgrade or anything, but in the end it would just be better off without it, as for Steam what if it shuts down? you just lose all your games?
- Rudegar, on 09/26/2008, -4/+3i stay away from DRM
sure i buy stuff from itunes store
but only itunes plus which dont have drm
hope some day somebody get the memo - keithloughnane, on 09/26/2008, -3/+1I like Ars but something is fishy here, this is the second artical that sounds like it's downplaying the Sport DRM/Rootkit thing. This one makes it sound like only a couple of Niche Clasic game retailers sell things without DRM.
If you like DRM i have some funiture i can rent you - inactive, on 09/26/2008, -7/+4DRM = Dicks Running Machines
- Zeromage, on 09/26/2008, -5/+1i like pizza, steve.
