- Calis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes, it pretty well does suck here in Indiana. While it may not have worked the last time it was tried, we have a more conservative government now, I wouldn't be surprised if this passes. That being said, I'm not sure what the big deal is so long as they can place an accurate label on the game. If a kid wants the game, he can't buy it from a retailer. Same as pr0n, alcohol and tobacco...so he either has to talk his parents into it, or talk one of his older friends/relatives into getting it for him. IMHO we don't really need legislation on this though, parents should care enough to pay attention to what it is their children are doing...perhaps some legislation on required parenting skills....

So because being a parent is hard, you want us to all do it (and make sacrifices) for you? Screw that. Be a parent or jump ship and shut the ***** up. I didn't make you forget to wear a condom and squeeze another brat into this world and, in the process, force myself to be further regulated for the sake of the little snotnosed ***** you can't manage to control. - fallingstars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"a game is not free speech"
Actually, the Supreme Court has interpreted the term Speech as used in the Constitution to mean the expression of ideas through any media. That's why porn is legal, and they have to resort to legislation such as this to (de facto) ban "obscene" video games.
In Constitutional terms, Speech doesn't always mean words. - luckyschop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1crapiolio - "Too bad, Indiana is the wilderness and no one plays video game."
close, but no. wilderness involves trees, and indiana is flatter than your sister... all for the infamous corn, beans, and wheat. and you're right, we only have time for moonshining, amish, and cowtipping... what's an intarweb?
more stupid indiana laws -
you can't sell cold beer where milk is sold, only warm
liquor stores cannot sell cold soft drinks
it is illegal to carry your cocktail from the bar to your seat - a waitress needs to do it
- kajoob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's their state, they can do whatever the hell they want. Much better the legislature do it than the courts, at least the citizens have a say in the matter if they think it's stupid.
- AttroPheed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Next on digg: Indiana game law declared unconstitutional. The nation is stunned.
- hammerattack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I just want everyone to know, that this is the same US State which tried to pass a law mandating that Pi be expressed as 3.2. The bill was never voted down, but instead postponed indefinately.

(Yes, it was nearly 110 years ago, but I'm not going to let it go...) - floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Won't someone PLEASE think of the children!?
- fallingstars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1linkdead:
It's not about getting inappropriate material into the hands of children. Any reasonable person knows that's wrong. The problem with obscenity laws targeting minors is that they're one step away from obscenity laws targeting everyone. Rather than deal with the legal requirements, retailers will just not stock those games (or movies, music, etc) to avoid the potential liability. Then nobody (including 21+ people like me) will be able to buy the games.
It's the "if you don't like it, just turn it off" philosophy.
Parents: if you don't want your kids playing inappropriate games, don't buy them. It's not like many under-17's have their own jobs, right? - SniperGX1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Simple. Its a violation of freedom of speech and should never become law. If it does we will disobey it. I will plant myself at game spot and let kids give me the money, i will go buy game, give to kids. Law says nothing about giving game to minor, only selling it.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0(sigh) Here we go again. The verbage of the law is very vauge. Includes "killing" and "violence". One could even consider jumping on the mushroom thingies in Super Mario as "violence".
This will, no doubt, fail miserably. The "sexual material" is irrelevant. The only really sexual stuff is AO, and no major retailers will carry those. So that leaves the M stuff, which is supposed to only be sold to 17 and up already. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh damn...
- khintzma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahem... Neil Armstrong went to Purdue (in fact, they're naming their next building in honor of him), Amelia Airheart frequented our campus, we have one of the premier Forensic Anthropologists in the world in Rensselaer, and no, not everybody here thinks their sister is cute (although I do).
HA! I don't have a sister.
Try not to judge us based on laws written by those who think they are doing the right thing. And BTW, there are quite a few more "backwoods" states in the US, I mean, has anyone ever been to Arkansas (anywhere but Little Rock and Hot Springs)? - bryce302, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it didn't work before it wont work now kinda sad that I live in Indiana.
- kirk06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0As an Indiana citizen (not proud of it), I will say this: This state is the most backwoods, conservative state in the nation. It wouldn't surprise me to see this pass.
- jwalk81980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0According to the Senator's own publications, he's for denying homosexuals their constitutional rights. So, big surprise that he'd be on the stupid side of video game legislation.
- plasticmind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@the josh23
Getting meth is still illegal. - TheKillDoctor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The story is brought to you by the state that prefers to have its own time zone!
Where you can gamble all you want as long as its on a river boat!
and Liquor in the front and poker in the rear except on Sundays! - the_josh23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh Great minors wont be able to buy violent video games but at least they can still get meth on every other street corner.
- poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0When a law has failed elsewhere, the guy introducing the bill is just looking for publicity and to build name recognition. Good job helping hiim with that. NO DIGGITY
- markgl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, well Indiana needs a reality check. They have the stupidest laws there. For god sakes, you can't buy beer on Sunday's!!! That in itself, if just straight F.U.B.A.R.
- Brak710101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy violence, batman!
Lets ban anything that could be related to violence and killing! Heck, lets disband all armys! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1States get to decide laws for themselves and not base their decision entirely on whether or not another particular state has passed or blocked something without bothering to vote on it and debate it. OH NOES! It's almost like we're a republic or something!!!! SAVE US!
- x2dx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@tastypastry
You are so right dude I live in this stupid state and all I do is smoke pot and drink. - opticwind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why is everyone worked up about 1 person's attempt at this law? Don't blame ALL of Indiana because of this idiot. That's just insanity.
Secondly, I'm all for banning kids from buying games that are M rated. If their parents want them to play the game, the parent can buy the game.
(And whoever said this is against freedom of speech...it isn't. Banning people from doing something isn't ALWAYS in violation of freedom of speech. They aren't banning people from SAYING it, just kids from hearing it...and there's no freedom of hearing.) - AzBaja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Great... Just what us gamers need, another crybaby telling us which games to play and not to play..."
Play what ever you want...But if your a child under 18 get a life go to school, learn something and get of you fat ass and go out side and play. - xofc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How hard is it to get from an online retailer, anyway? If a deviant kid is that desperate to get his hands on a game, I'm sure he could just order it from amazon after grabbing his parent's credit card.
- generalbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this sucks. I live in IN
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Attention Peter Pan: Go back to Neverland. This is the real world here, and we want out children to grow the ***** up.

- PhantomJM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Let's not forget that these people are politicians. Their primary goal is to appear sympathetic to the voters' concerns and get re-elected. I don't think that these people expect video game laws to stick - they just want their names out where everyone can see and hear them.
- AzBaja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"That's why porn is legal, and they have to resort to legislation such as this to (de facto) ban "obscene" video games."
So why do you have to be over 18 to rent a porno or pick up a skin mag at the 7-11 or Drive a car or smoke or drink a beer or gamble or get into an "R" movie? As a minor (under 18) you really have limited rights. That is why you can steal cars, rob houses, rape little old ladys, kill the people and never have your face or name shown on TV then you get out of jail at 18. You are a minor and your rights are limited, unless you get to bump up to an adult court. - Cerberus047, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0sheesh i live in indiana and this sucks the only thing it will make us do is go to the torrents......
- linkdead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I am amazed at the majority of attitudes here. The state is attempting to protect children from things that they are not ready to grasp. They do the same thing with many other things, why is this different? Because someone labeled it a game? So digitize Debbie does Dallas, make it interactive and let your 10 year old daughter and her friend play it. Oh wait, that's safe, because we all know kids don't mimic what they see in games or on TV. The bottom line is not "Freedom of" whatever, these are kids, not adults, it's putting limits on corporations that don't care about your kids.
- Ixliam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It does seem to be a "get on the bandwagon" type of response. The senator knows it will be shot down, but in the end it will look good on his record, even though it will waste taxpayers time and dollars.
I live in Indiana (just moved here) and like it. Its peaceful and quiet where I am at, and just a short drive to Chicago if I need to go to the big city. - AzBaja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And whoever said this is against freedom of speech...it isn't. You must be gay. Or have a little pecker. - rockdave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In my opinion, this law would be totally useless and ineffective. The kids never buy the game, it's always the parents. Kids these days are spoiled and there parents will buy them anything they want. So the parent will go out and buy the kid the game because "Well who cares if it's for people older than 18, my son is mature enough to handle it."
The parents might as well have pulled the trigger on the gun that their kid used to shoot up a school. - RabidFurby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Indiana is retarded, I hate this state.
Nobody should be worried, this isn't going to happen. But if it WERE to happen, it would definately be Indiana at the forefront of this bs. - crapiolio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Too bad, Indiana is the wilderness and no one plays video game.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"I cant believe this is on the front page. And BTW Indiana sucks! I hate it here. Nothing to do but smoke pot and drink."
Umm. Buy bus ticket and leave, you smacktard. - BBad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Stupid law parent who dont pay attention to the rating will end up going to the local best-buy and getting the game for their kids anyway. Why try to blame the retailer for what kids are buying.......it not like a game is cheap new games range in price from $19.99 to 49.99+ so for a kid to afford a game(most of the time) they have to get the money from their parents. So if the goverenment was really interested in stopping kids from playing voilent games then they should invest some money into educating parent on using the rating on games, it's sad that game developers put more affect into this and then get their work twist by those in government trying to make a name for themselfs just look as the bill coming before congress http://www.senate.gov/~clinton/news/statements/details.cfm?id=249368
It's just a easy was to make a name on a issue but really do you think they care. Hell kids could turn on the TV (local not cable) adn see all the violent and sex they want. - dmoffitt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0read the same story weeks ago.
- rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1 I hope it goes thru, it will help keep all the little kiddies off of my online games. You know who starts a kick vote on you when you're playing BF2? The little baby that just got pwned by you and cant take it. I played on a server once that a clan was playing on (it wasn't their server either) well I joined on and started cap'n the crap out of all of them and one started a kick vote on me and the rest in the can voted, like 12 little kids and I was kicked fromt he server. Well now I have my own server and I leave voting on so i can ban the first little bit*h that does it. I am a banning machine, bunny hop? = BAN, chopper whor? = BAN, cry baby? = BAN, sniper whor? = BAN, armor whor = BAN etc etc etc Basically, play fair, do something beside hide in a vehicle the enitre game or sit on a crane and you wont get banned.
- ichthus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What's funny standing up for what you believe?
- AzBaja, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"IMHO we don't really need legislation on this though, parents should care enough to pay attention to what it is their children are doing...perhaps some legislation on required parenting skills...."
I would think that passing a law as parents to not sell my under 18 age person Beer, Violent games, Porn or any thing else is a good idea as a parent, As you can not be every place at once. once you turn 18 or 21 go do what you want.
Can we start a list of children killed in school by wacko kids that do not have a clue. Look up in the papers today in Arizona we have some people out shooting homeless people and dogs out the window of a car 2 people dead the others will recover, bet when we catch them, it will be some kids saying we did it just like GTA:SA (I love the game) but I know better and most every one under 21 is a walking idiot, who do not. - tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I cant believe this is on the front page.
