Incredible facial animation video running in real-time
joystiq.com — Video for Mova's Contour facial capture system: "This pushes Unreal Engine 3 to its very limit ... it's about as photo-real as you can get in real time."

- razorc03, on 02/19/2008, -53/+246Terrible choice of dialog
- Akaji, on 02/19/2008, -2/+81Not really, it shows off the facial expressions well (such as the up-turned corner of his mouth, which is especially impressive to me).
- perkidog, on 02/19/2008, -9/+0possibly so - but those heads do look spooky to me - the very sight of them kinda cut off the bodies....
- Shaflugi, on 02/19/2008, -1/+15Welcome to the Uncanny Valley, sir. Enjoy your stay.
- YoctoYotta, on 02/20/2008, -1/+4I might be putting myself out on a limb here, but I'd say this goes along way towards jumping that valley.
- Shaflugi, on 02/19/2008, -1/+15Welcome to the Uncanny Valley, sir. Enjoy your stay.
- perkidog, on 02/19/2008, -9/+0possibly so - but those heads do look spooky to me - the very sight of them kinda cut off the bodies....
- h0merg0mez, on 02/19/2008, -5/+31WHOA HO! You're DOOMED, baby!
- Katana314, on 02/19/2008, -3/+9AGH! Epic is wasting all this! They make this great facial system and such, but...their games always have such horrible stories and characters.
For a more modular system, use Face Poser (Source SDK from Half-Life 2). I can create stuff more emotionally provocative (although not as technologically detailed) than this in a week.- Protoss, on 02/19/2008, -1/+14I think this is more for the companies that will go and license the UT3 Engine in their games.
- Akaji, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5e.g. games such as Lost Odyssey, which is pretty danged "emotionally provocative" at times...
- Protoss, on 02/19/2008, -1/+14I think this is more for the companies that will go and license the UT3 Engine in their games.
- Llanowar, on 02/20/2008, -17/+2Choice of voice versus animation is worse. It sounds like a black person talking. (in the virst vid)
- GreenAlien, on 02/20/2008, -2/+18What's with all the crap about voice overs. Just appreciate the rendering. That's what's being demonstrated.
- grumbel, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1The rendering is secondary, this is about a new way to capture the actual motion data, i.e. no more reflective dots needed on the face.
- RIAAagent, on 02/20/2008, -1/+4I thought the dialog was funny.... : |
- xptoast, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1Saweet!
- Kakcoo, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Monologue?
- Akaji, on 02/19/2008, -2/+81Not really, it shows off the facial expressions well (such as the up-turned corner of his mouth, which is especially impressive to me).
- Animental, on 02/19/2008, -6/+45Stunning!
- canUdi9it, on 02/19/2008, -15/+3Almost as amazing as Ron Paul!
- wafflez, on 02/20/2008, -4/+4The bump mapping in crysis faces looked alot better to me...
- gkskillz, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5But it doesn't look like the renderings have bump mapping applied, it looks like only the bitmap was applied to a very high res model. I'm sure that they could clean up the textures (both the bitmap and the bump map, plus all the other maps that get applied) and make it even more impressive. But what they're showing off is how they can make a very detailed model, using a new technique which is better and more precise than the current one (using the reflective balls.
- Disease, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5Who needs bump mapping when you can have curling upper lips?
- ophello, on 02/20/2008, -1/+2Spellbinding!
- themacx, on 02/19/2008, -0/+68created the above real-time video, shown running on a dual NVIDIA 8800 GTXs with SLI.
- Akaji, on 02/19/2008, -1/+25Yeah, it might be tough to render in real-time, but for pre-rendered cutscenes and for movies this would be insanely cool.
- quaunaut, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5Yup, its not for current games/hardware in general, more for the next generation. Which, frankly, is effin' amazing. Though apparently *something* is going to be using it in 08/09, so who knows.
- GliTCH82, on 02/19/2008, -2/+19I'm sure they can scale this down to a single 8800 without sacrificing much of the quality.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 02/19/2008, -1/+24They could scale it down to a 6800 or less, sacrificing detail. The problem is still rendering the rest of a scene for a game.
- OrangeSoda31, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3could they scale it down to a Radeon x1650, with 1.5 gb of system ram, and a 64 bit 2 GHz AMD cpu without sacrificing much of the quality?
- Smills, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Why would they really need to? Most gamers wouldn't have that kind of a system these days...
- Bornhuetter, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3What about running it on an iPod? Would you lose much quality?
- subterfuge, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10of which an equivalent computing power will be available for 150$ in two years.
- joegibes, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5You don't have quad SLI? You're livin' in the past, man.
- PurpleSfinx, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3You don't have eight octothreaded GPUs on each of your cards which are in octo SLI? Disgraceful.
- Ninjapope, on 02/20/2008, -1/+3You don't have a ball in a cup.
- PurpleSfinx, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2You dont have rock paper scissors.
Besides, you're WRONG buddy. I literally was discussing how fun my ball in a cup is today. And that was meant to be alot less sexual than it sounds.
- PurpleSfinx, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2You dont have rock paper scissors.
- Ninjapope, on 02/20/2008, -1/+3You don't have a ball in a cup.

- therightclique, on 02/19/2008, -9/+13oh, you figured out how to repeat something you've just heard. how special.
- FreDre, on 02/19/2008, -2/+9That looks like the technology they used for the facial animations of the pre-rendered trailer of Mafia 2.
- ProfessorSYM, on 02/19/2008, -1/+54That's pretty cool...the character looks like a freshly shaven Dave Attell.
- OldSchoolNinja, on 02/19/2008, -2/+7I was thinking a maniacally smiling Vin Diesel, myself.
- ProfessorSYM, on 02/19/2008, -2/+7Dave Diesel.
- Akaji, on 02/19/2008, -3/+37It's obviously the heavy gunner from Team Fortress 2.
- Myonosken, on 02/19/2008, -3/+1Ray Winstone
- CrankyPants, on 02/19/2008, -5/+1I thought of Zippy the Pinhead
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/4/41/Zipp ... - Murfshay22, on 02/19/2008, -1/+0At the end of the first video, the shot of the face head on kind of looks like detective stabler from Law and Order: SVU.
you know... without hair. - ohgr, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1I was thinking a mix of Patrick Stewart and Bill Goldberg (He's a former wrestler)
- Professr, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1The dialog would be different if there was any Patrick Stewart in the model. Probably something along the lines of "do you want to talk about it?"
- RussellDovey, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2There are four lights!
- Professr, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1The dialog would be different if there was any Patrick Stewart in the model. Probably something along the lines of "do you want to talk about it?"

- MutatedNantuko, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Looks like a mix between the Heavy from TF2 and Michael Chiklis from The Shield.
- H1tchh1k3r, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Cry some more
- Arkz, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1STEVE BALMER!
they just need him saying DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS!
- OldSchoolNinja, on 02/19/2008, -2/+7I was thinking a maniacally smiling Vin Diesel, myself.
- Calcularius, on 02/19/2008, -18/+14Would look more realistic if the eyelids ever blinked.
- FreDre, on 02/19/2008, -0/+11They do actually. Pay more attention to the 1st video
- norman619, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2It's the mouth not just the eyes.
- Fkb797, on 02/19/2008, -30/+4Is it only me, or did that make anyone else ***** off?
- subterfuge, on 02/19/2008, -2/+8your rating answers your question
- CTK14A, on 02/19/2008, -2/+49This is amazing stuff...but why do these renderings always have gray, perfectly-shaped teeth? In real life the enamel on your teeth is either healthy and white or a little bit coffee-stained. Or--as physiognomy dictates--they're misshapen and yellow if you're the bad guy.
/nitpick- ligyron, on 02/19/2008, -4/+11Because this video is showcasing animation. Teeth is just a small texture that can easily be changed
- noots, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4but why not do it properly? it would take like 3-4 hours max to create a realistic skin for those teeth.
- EtherGnat, on 02/20/2008, -2/+10Doubtful. It's taken me 35 years to develop the skin on my teeth.
- noots, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4but why not do it properly? it would take like 3-4 hours max to create a realistic skin for those teeth.
- embit, on 02/19/2008, -3/+7So I'm the bad guy?
- Rev0lver, on 02/20/2008, -3/+2No, you just practice poor hygiene.
- BlackOp, on 02/20/2008, -0/+5The lighting and textures on the teeth, tongue and eyes are really terrible. The tongue is good in the 2nd vid though.
- Elliuotatar, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1His eyes look dead to me. And they look really odd when he's looking up. I'm not sure why though. Maybe they're not focused on the same point or whatever point people focus on when they do that.
Also his head shakes too much.- sinrtb, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Welcome to uncanny valley, also if the head shakes to much thats the actor not the rendering.
- Elliuotatar, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1His eyes look dead to me. And they look really odd when he's looking up. I'm not sure why though. Maybe they're not focused on the same point or whatever point people focus on when they do that.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1I didn't think that the teeth in the clip where that white.
- neio, on 02/20/2008, -0/+4Are you trying to say British people are all bad guys?
- PaulRay, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Yes. Duh!
- ligyron, on 02/19/2008, -4/+11Because this video is showcasing animation. Teeth is just a small texture that can easily be changed
- seanthebond, on 02/19/2008, -2/+259I can't wait to shoot that guy in the head!
- JusticeFriend, on 02/20/2008, -5/+2BOOM HEADSHOT!!
- h4mx0r, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3I wonder how realistic the gibbing animations will be.
- EvanVolm, on 02/19/2008, -1/+137Facial expressions in games keep getting better and better, however, the one thing they can't seem to perfect are eyes.
- angers, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10totally agree, but I was quite impressed with the achieved intensity from this video.
- affanjam, on 02/19/2008, -3/+12sort of like the Uncanny Valley effect
- Syphon8, on 02/19/2008, -0/+27It's because everyone models eyes as shiny spheres, rather than matte spheres beneath thin wet glass.
- hotcod, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6Valve are about the only people to have ever gotten the eyes right, they've gone on at length about how much effort they had to put in to getting the eyes to look right... while there not perfect i've seen on/off screens of the eye effects and even the small details they add to the way the eye looked makes a huge difference over all to how 'real' the model looks... its just not something that 'jumps out at you' which means sadly a lot of game designers ignore getting it right to run with the big stuff you notice... in fact thes a dev cometary in ep2 where they are kind of complaining about the fact all the cool new stuff there doing and adding isn't 'jump out noticeable' so you don't get an overt reaction just a better 'feeling'
- superal1394, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Oh I noticed it in Episode 2. Alyx looks incredibly realistic in Episode 2. Everything from the way she moves to her expressions. It is amazing. Even looking from Half Life 2 to Episode 2, how much it's changed is incredible.
She looks like a real person.

- GliTCH82, on 02/19/2008, -4/+30I wanna see this technology done with chicks. Half-naked chicks with bouncing *****.
- EtherGnat, on 02/20/2008, -0/+7Half naked... pffft. If ever there was something you didn't want to do half assed!
- stevecole, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Gonna get dugg down for it, but...
I see what you did there.
- stevecole, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Gonna get dugg down for it, but...
- EtherGnat, on 02/20/2008, -0/+7Half naked... pffft. If ever there was something you didn't want to do half assed!
- laelfrog, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Its better if you click on the full-screen, but still not believable. I know they had him roll his eyes once and blink, but it needs something else. We need to be able to tell where he is focusing. It didn't look like the pupils changed size or shifted much.
- moush, on 02/19/2008, -2/+1Or gameplay.
- spargett, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7There's too much dark space around the eyeball. It makes them seem unnaturally sunk into his face. Make note of when he looks up, he looks incredibly sick or something.
- mGARANDEUR1, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2Unless of course, that is what he is supposed to look like.
- BedPost, on 02/20/2008, -1/+5Pssh... I still get lost staring into Alyx's beautiful eyes. It's like for one moment, her and I are one and there is nothing but us...
Then again, most of the time I'm just staring at her ass.- MutatedNantuko, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Or what looks like the Horadric cube around her neck. What the ***** is that thing?
- SuppaK, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1In time.
But yeah it is all about the eyes, thats what the people who do the CGI for stuff like Pirates of the Carribean said, "all about the eyes". - Nyctobello, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1The eyes always seem to look down. I notice this heavily in "Assassin's Creed", but less so in "COD4". Also, it seems to counter-balance the effects of poor facial expresions, developers like move the neck around like every character has bubble-head genes. Its most annoying.
- iamdon, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3Would you rather wait for the moron to finish off? I would shoot blindly at first sight..thats called survival & winning strategy
- aydoubleyou, on 02/19/2008, -0/+103Reminds me of the Heavy from TF
- jimmick, on 02/19/2008, -2/+18THANKYOU DOKTOR

It's Max Headroom!- terracottapai, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Um.. I fail to see how that looks anything like Max Headroom.
- anononon, on 02/19/2008, -3/+4Y-y-y-you f-f-f-f-f-fail ail aillll
- jspania, on 02/19/2008, -3/+16his eyes and half-lip smirk kinda freaked me out.
- SpectralSounds, on 02/19/2008, -10/+5That was pretty damn impressive. I just bought Mass Effect and was pretty dissapointed with the "lip-synching" in that game.
- DeadlyAlpaca, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6I found the Krogan lip-syncing fasinating.
- GeneralFailure0, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1I'm not saying Mass Effect's technology is the absolute best, but it's a nice-looking game and considering the sheer mass of dialogue in the game, all of which is spoken, I'm pretty impressed with the overall quality of lip-syncing throughout.
- justjoehere, on 02/19/2008, -3/+2I'd like to see a demo of a few more emotions that intimidation and bad comedy. Maybe a demo of a woman with an affectionate conversation with her significant other. Nonetheless, pretty cool.
- Akaji, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3Something like "Heavy Rain"? http://youtube.com/watch?v=LCClcsD3GcU
- Professr, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3The eyes and head/body movements are perfect, but the mouth is horrible. Kudos to whoever played the part for voice and motion capture - it was moving.
- norman619, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3Perfect? You are kidding right? It was pretty plastic. Facial expressions weren't good at all. If I turn down the audio it looks like the girl is mentally handicapped.
- iChainsaw, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2haha, I tried that norman and she does look retarded.
- Akaji, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1This is exactly why I was trying to point out that that sequence would make a great candidate for this form of facial motion capture...
- Professr, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3The eyes and head/body movements are perfect, but the mouth is horrible. Kudos to whoever played the part for voice and motion capture - it was moving.

- anagoge, on 02/19/2008, -8/+5I always liked your mother.
- AndrewDB, on 02/19/2008, -1/+6It's like a bald Daniel Baldwin, and 40 times more creepy.
- bazacko, on 02/19/2008, -4/+9Did we just jump the valley?
- GliTCH82, on 02/19/2008, -0/+13No. The eyes still look fake. And I'm as creeped out as ever.
- iChainsaw, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6almost.
- eOgas, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1Yeah, we jumped it alright, in an F16. Too bad we can't ALL afford F16's.
- TheZorch, on 02/19/2008, -8/+2The Unreal Engine has always been known for pushing the envelope. The original Unreal pushed the machines of the day and Unreal Tournament 3 is no different.
- therightclique, on 02/19/2008, -3/+3wow. to say that statement is inaccurate would be the understatement of this thread.
- logandurand, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3This has nothing to do with the Unreal Engine, that's just what they're using to render it. What they're really showing off here is their motion-capture technology, which could be used with any engine you export the model to. In theory, data captured with this method could be ported from engine to engine with ease. I would love to see this used for the Source engine or CryEngine 2.
- warrenterr, on 02/19/2008, -11/+4Wow, say goodbye to animators.
- petethepanda, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10Real-time? Awesome. I wonder what they've got in the computer running it.
- smilgy, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7A dual NVIDIA 8800 GTXs with SLI
- petethepanda, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Nice. Hopefully with the 9800gtx on the horizon stuff like this can be done realistically on Joe PC Gamer's computer.
- eOgas, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Yeah, maybe if Joe is short for Bill.....Gates.
- Smills, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1More info actually recently came out about the 9800GTX. Nvidia is being retarded. The 9800GTX is G92 based and just an overclocked version of the 8800GTS 512 but with 1gb of RAM.
- petethepanda, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1Nice. Hopefully with the 9800gtx on the horizon stuff like this can be done realistically on Joe PC Gamer's computer.
- anononon, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4072 hamsters in a wheel and a LOLCAT upgradin teh megahurtz.
- EntangledPhysx, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1what are teh megahurtz? I havn't heard such words in over 10 years!
- smilgy, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7A dual NVIDIA 8800 GTXs with SLI
- AlphaR75, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10How soon before I can replace my own head with this technology? It would save me hundreds of dollars in haircuts.
- phenom2k7, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Stop whining and cut your own hair you bum.
- Asheis, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4I was wondering as I was watching this video; do the actors they use this technology on have to have similar facial structures, or could they be totally different? Just considering different applications... this could potentially make stars out of people who aren't the prettiest people, but have hugh acting talent!
This was a really cool find!- norman619, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2It's mocap. No they don't.
- ohhoe, on 02/19/2008, -0/+26This is terrifying.
- SirBrittanicus, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I know. O_O
- GliTCH82, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1It really, really is. See if we ever have any kind of AI working for us it won't have the voice of GlaDOS, it will be this guy.
- YoHenYo, on 02/19/2008, -8/+1That looks like Steve from the Jerry Springer show.
The term Uncanny Valley will start to show itself in these comments very soon. I might as well bring it up first.- Sp0rAdiC, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7You didn't
- Syric, on 02/20/2008, -1/+1More like tenth.
- NiGHTSChao, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8Its realistic heavy weapons guy
- ronaldmonster, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6Is that the heavy from Team Fortress?
- readme, on 02/19/2008, -4/+17Wow a bald guy in a Unreal Engine demo. Big surprise. Call me when Epic technology can actually do hair (covering it up with a do-rag don't count).
- NullzipZero, on 02/19/2008, -2/+4don't hate.
- MsGo, on 02/19/2008, -3/+1I won't be impressed by motion captue technology, until they work out that too smooth/creepy kink.
- kingUssop, on 02/19/2008, -1/+19"uses an array of cameras to create 100,000 polygon facial model" You may be able to run that in real-time by itself, but not in a gaming situation with lots of other stuff taking resources I'm afraid.
- GothAlice, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9As with any modelling technology, you down-sample the high-poly model using ray-casting to create the extra detail in a texture layer (vs. polygons). Lower the poly count to a few thousand per face and you're good to go.
- eOgas, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Maybe in a few gens...
- gordonf238, on 02/19/2008, -13/+3Kind of looks like Half-Life 2 character animation. I don't see what's so special about it. It still looks very fake.
- Protoss, on 02/19/2008, -1/+6The Source engine is amazing at facial expressions, VALVe really knows their stuff.
- Leetamus, on 02/19/2008, -1/+5yeah the character himself does look fake, but that's not what this is showing.. the accute facial movement is leagues above hl2 imo.
- Jertje, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4HL2's facial animations look like the animations in the article in the same way that a mule looks a bit like Jessica Alba. Mind you, back when it was released the animations in HL2 were gobsmacking, but they still do not synch very well, nor do they display extreme emotions properly. I honestly can't see how anyone can say that the animations in that article do not look that special.
- mllawso, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I think he's referring to the latest episode of the hl2 series
- nickiank, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Oh, so it's the adjective, not the noun.
- maxsunset, on 02/19/2008, -2/+3Looks cool. BUT, we'll see how well it translates to real games. You can only have so many bones and animations before you run out of memory, and when the animators are competing with the artists, well, you see the dilemma. I have faith though. Just look at Uncharted...
- FuckXboxx, on 02/19/2008, -12/+5Hey look...they finally caught up the the Source Engine...
- ufee, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1Not really. The source engine is pretty dated. Go take a look.
- ligyron, on 02/19/2008, -4/+1Wow, if they figure out how to do eyes and lips/teeth properly, they're gold
Just hold both of your fingers up to the screen, covering the eyes and mouth on second video while it's playing. Looks like it could really be a person - jayekub, on 02/19/2008, -3/+7Pretty cool, but motion capture is NOT animation. If you've ever tried animating yourself, you'd understand why it bugs animators when people intermix the terms.
- Morwynd, on 02/19/2008, -3/+3What is your definition of animation? Because I can't find one that specifies animation must be done by hand.
Animation is simply displaying a rapid series of still images to create the illusion of motion. This qualifies.- Syric, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3I think what he means is, it's when you create the images and their motions by yourself, not when the computer does it for you.
Obviously, live-action footage isn't animation. Motion capture is the equivalent of "filming" someone and applying it to a set of polygons.
- Syric, on 02/20/2008, -0/+3I think what he means is, it's when you create the images and their motions by yourself, not when the computer does it for you.
- aaarrrghh, on 02/19/2008, -3/+1Bet he feels pretty silly now
- Morwynd, on 02/19/2008, -3/+3What is your definition of animation? Because I can't find one that specifies animation must be done by hand.
- JimSartor, on 02/19/2008, -12/+7Just think of the amazing PORN applications! Once again, porn presses technology ahead one more step.
- TotalFrenzy, on 02/19/2008, -6/+0This is a pretty big improvement on the Unreal Engine, I just hope Epic makes some good use of it
- GliTCH82, on 02/19/2008, -1/+2Epic could use more epic.
- ufee, on 02/20/2008, -0/+2How is this an improvement on the unreal engine? This is a utilization. The engine remains unchanged.

- phenom2k7, on 02/20/2008, -0/+1It looks nothing like him.
- webtekie, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7Vimeo rocks! HD is awesome.
- Zlorp, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3pretty rad, wonder when they'll be able to have 100 people on screen with this kind of animation
- Arkz, on 02/21/2008, -0/+1...Rad? ...*checks calender* nope its not 1990 anymore...
- Syphon8, on 02/19/2008, -1/+5That was actually terrifying. Next-gen is going to be cool.
- OnlineAddict, on 02/19/2008, -1/+1This guy is scary looking! Ewwwwwwww
- frindim, on 02/19/2008, -0/+21That guy changes facial expressions more often than Tom Cruise.
- Professr, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3But less than Cat Deeley.
- FatDrunkBastard, on 02/19/2008, -0/+1I did a double take at the headline.
