- razorc03, on 02/19/2008, -53/+246Terrible choice of dialog
- EvanVolm, on 02/19/2008, -1/+137Facial expressions in games keep getting better and better, however, the one thing they can't seem to perfect are eyes.
- aydoubleyou, on 02/19/2008, -0/+103Reminds me of the Heavy from TF
- Akaji, on 02/19/2008, -2/+81Not really, it shows off the facial expressions well (such as the up-turned corner of his mouth, which is especially impressive to me).
- themacx, on 02/19/2008, -0/+68created the above real-time video, shown running on a dual NVIDIA 8800 GTXs with SLI.
- ProfessorSYM, on 02/19/2008, -1/+54That's pretty cool...the character looks like a freshly shaven Dave Attell.
- CTK14A, on 02/19/2008, -2/+49This is amazing stuff...but why do these renderings always have gray, perfectly-shaped teeth? In real life the enamel on your teeth is either healthy and white or a little bit coffee-stained. Or--as physiognomy dictates--they're misshapen and yellow if you're the bad guy.
/nitpick - Animental, on 02/19/2008, -6/+45Stunning!
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4072 hamsters in a wheel and a LOLCAT upgradin teh megahurtz.
- Akaji, on 02/19/2008, -3/+37It's obviously the heavy gunner from Team Fortress 2.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -0/+27It's because everyone models eyes as shiny spheres, rather than matte spheres beneath thin wet glass.
- GliTCH82, on 02/19/2008, -4/+30I wanna see this technology done with chicks. Half-naked chicks with bouncing *****.
- ohhoe, on 02/19/2008, -0/+26This is terrifying.
- h0merg0mez, on 02/19/2008, -5/+31WHOA HO! You're DOOMED, baby!
- Akaji, on 02/19/2008, -1/+25Yeah, it might be tough to render in real-time, but for pre-rendered cutscenes and for movies this would be insanely cool.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 02/19/2008, -1/+24They could scale it down to a 6800 or less, sacrificing detail. The problem is still rendering the rest of a scene for a game.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -0/+21That guy changes facial expressions more often than Tom Cruise.
- kingUssop, on 02/19/2008, -1/+19"uses an array of cameras to create 100,000 polygon facial model" You may be able to run that in real-time by itself, but not in a gaming situation with lots of other stuff taking resources I'm afraid.
- GliTCH82, on 02/19/2008, -2/+19I'm sure they can scale this down to a single 8800 without sacrificing much of the quality.
- GreenAlien, on 02/20/2008, -2/+18What's with all the crap about voice overs. Just appreciate the rendering. That's what's being demonstrated.
- jimmick, on 02/19/2008, -2/+18THANKYOU DOKTOR
- Shaflugi, on 02/19/2008, -1/+15Welcome to the Uncanny Valley, sir. Enjoy your stay.
- Protoss, on 02/19/2008, -1/+14I think this is more for the companies that will go and license the UT3 Engine in their games.
- readme, on 02/19/2008, -4/+17Wow a bald guy in a Unreal Engine demo. Big surprise. Call me when Epic technology can actually do hair (covering it up with a do-rag don't count).
- GliTCH82, on 02/19/2008, -0/+13No. The eyes still look fake. And I'm as creeped out as ever.
- jspania, on 02/19/2008, -3/+16his eyes and half-lip smirk kinda freaked me out.
- FreDre, on 02/19/2008, -0/+11They do actually. Pay more attention to the 1st video
- angers, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10totally agree, but I was quite impressed with the achieved intensity from this video.
- subterfuge, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10of which an equivalent computing power will be available for 150$ in two years.
- petethepanda, on 02/19/2008, -0/+10Real-time? Awesome. I wonder what they've got in the computer running it.
- ayfour, on 02/20/2008, -0/+9Who touched Sasha? WHO TOUCHED MY GUN!?!
- AlphaR75, on 02/19/2008, -1/+10How soon before I can replace my own head with this technology? It would save me hundreds of dollars in haircuts.
- GothAlice, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9As with any modelling technology, you down-sample the high-poly model using ray-casting to create the extra detail in a texture layer (vs. polygons). Lower the poly count to a few thousand per face and you're good to go.
- affanjam, on 02/19/2008, -3/+12sort of like the Uncanny Valley effect
- EtherGnat, on 02/20/2008, -2/+10Doubtful. It's taken me 35 years to develop the skin on my teeth.
- NiGHTSChao, on 02/19/2008, -0/+8Its realistic heavy weapons guy
- ligyron, on 02/19/2008, -4/+11Because this video is showcasing animation. Teeth is just a small texture that can easily be changed
- spargett, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7There's too much dark space around the eyeball. It makes them seem unnaturally sunk into his face. Make note of when he looks up, he looks incredibly sick or something.
- webtekie, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7Vimeo rocks! HD is awesome.
- FreDre, on 02/19/2008, -2/+9That looks like the technology they used for the facial animations of the pre-rendered trailer of Mafia 2.
- smilgy, on 02/19/2008, -0/+7A dual NVIDIA 8800 GTXs with SLI
- Professr, on 02/19/2008, -1/+8I need to find a demo of that software somewhere...
- EtherGnat, on 02/20/2008, -0/+7Half naked... pffft. If ever there was something you didn't want to do half assed!
- Sp0rAdiC, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7You didn't
- hotcod, on 02/20/2008, -0/+6Valve are about the only people to have ever gotten the eyes right, they've gone on at length about how much effort they had to put in to getting the eyes to look right... while there not perfect i've seen on/off screens of the eye effects and even the small details they add to the way the eye looked makes a huge difference over all to how 'real' the model looks... its just not something that 'jumps out at you' which means sadly a lot of game designers ignore getting it right to run with the big stuff you notice... in fact thes a dev cometary in ep2 where they are kind of complaining about the fact all the cool new stuff there doing and adding isn't 'jump out noticeable' so you don't get an overt reaction just a better 'feeling'
- ronaldmonster, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6Is that the heavy from Team Fortress?
- subterfuge, on 02/19/2008, -2/+8your rating answers your question
- DeadlyAlpaca, on 02/19/2008, -0/+6I found the Krogan lip-syncing fasinating.
- Katana314, on 02/19/2008, -3/+9AGH! Epic is wasting all this! They make this great facial system and such, but...their games always have such horrible stories and characters.
For a more modular system, use Face Poser (Source SDK from Half-Life 2). I can create stuff more emotionally provocative (although not as technologically detailed) than this in a week. -
