- CamZak, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Either way, unless the PS3 can deliver significantly better graphics than the 360 it'll be a bust. The console itself is huge, costs a lot of money, and has dissapointed people constantly. So far they've removed 1 SPU (it's still there but it's been disabled for redundancy), 2 gigabit ethernet ports (originally promised 3 for some reason), and I think the PS3 no longer supports 7 controllers (as promised), the graphics card itself has been downgraded, there's only going to be a small amount on the market initially, the Wii and 360 will have established themselves long before the PS3 is fully avaible to everyone. It's a letdown after letdown. And by the time everyone can buy one without there being shortages, people will rather just buy games for the consoles they already have, at least the sane people.
- obediah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27If Sony sinks, it will be the BluRay, not the PS3. Or more accurately, the greed that made them turn a slamdunk in the console business into gigantic gamble on a battle over HD movies that 4 people care about. Even if they win the DVD war, the PS3 will never be the gaming experience it should have been.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28Don't forget that they've lost almost ALL of their console exclusives. They have, what, two or three major exclusive franchises now? Metal Gear being the only one I'm concerned about at all, but that's certainly not enough to make me consider a PS3.
When you lose GTA (release) exclusivity in the US market, you've done bad. - neoncricket, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Hubris has been the downfall of many giants. Between an overpriced machine that "everyone is sure to buy," and not taking responsibility for the rootkit fiasco not too long ago, I have no love for Sony anymore. I'll stick with a company if they make mistakes. I won't stick around if they screw the consumer on the way down and act like they should enjoy the ride.
- Edrick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Hubris is what knocked Nintendo out of 1st place. Risk is what put Sony into 1st place.
Now the tables have turned. - dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Low production means that they won't be able to drop the price for a longer period of time, which is what they are going to have to do to seriously compete at all.
- Hollister, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11That must mean Ken Kutaragi is the band that keeps playing whilst the ship is sinking.
- Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13At least they seem to be trying much harder to fail this time. When Kutaragi has nothing positive to say, what hope can they have?
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10yeah, everyone knows that games that span multiple discs are total garbage. i mean who wants to play something like most of the final fantasy, metal gear, or any other series which requires such herculean tasks as swaping a disc once, twice, or god forbid THREE times in the course of the game?
- asurroca, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Good call. It's precisely the BluRay drive that's been slowing PS3 production in the first place. Sony should have made a separate Sony-branded BluRay player instead of forcing it into the PS3.
- Alphabet, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11The only problem with the PS3 is the ***** blu-ray that comes attached with it, which doubled the cost of the ps3 from $300 to $600. Good going sony, trying to corner the blu-ray market by attaching an overpriced piece of junk to the ps3
- borsdy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Nobody is believing any rumours. We're just treating them as that, rumours.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4japanese economy murdered by huge debt to ps3? not until they get more than 100k in the country.
- venir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@icealchemist
Umm... what? - danielandrews, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I think the problem is that all of that technology is being force-fed to consumers. It will push the envelope of gaming, but I'm not sure how many people will pay that much @ launch.
- c0dy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6That's true, but if DS' sales are anything to go by, they really shouldn't rely on Japan only. The Wii is already generating an incredible amount of positive hype here in the West, I can't even start to imagine how crazy the Japanese will go for it...
- TheXeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hmm, yeah, when it all comes down to it, the real polarizer here is Blu-ray. On one side, It's easy to see a great many of those with dissenting opinions of PS3 (amid many other company practices, I know I know) stem from that fact that a great many gamers won't be able to take advantage of it's full capabilities, and it's almost become spiteful. If you don't have an HD TV, it's a big deal breaker, and the only thing that really tempts that large section of gamers is the games themselves, which Sony doesn't exactly have a stranglehold on like last gen.
On the other hand, those that do have an HDTV, well, PS3 is actually fairly tempting. It's a crazy thought I know, but it's a steal when you really think about what you're getting for the price. I'll admit HD is nice. Honestly, you just don't really know until you have an HD set. And when you do, yes it'll happen, I'll imagine many tunes changing about the PS3. - negativenancy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Is there a chance that the PS3 will hurt Sony (badly)? Yes.
Do we have to have 15 articles rehashing the same opinion resurfacing on digg every 2 weeks? No.
PS3 is Sony's iceberg, its kryptonite, its Achilles Heel, its weak point (for massive damage), AND its retarded son-in-law. Ok, we get it. PS3 bad, Wii/360 Good. Please stop making editorials in an attempt to boost more traffic to your site. - asurroca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The Titanic sunk nearly a century ago... and you find a Titanic analogy offensive? If there were a statute of limitations on calling something offensive, this analogy would have exceeded it decades ago.... oh, wait, you must be offended by the Sony-bashing title...
- ducnclor65, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"When you have back to back 100 million unit selling consoles you earn that right."
I guess that is the attitude of sony these days. We have the right to tell you what you want. As a consumer I always thought I had the right to know what I want.
Attaching the innovative cell processor to a double drm'ed HD format (like attaching umd to psp great screen) is not what I want.
This is the same mentality that gave us 1st ed DVD,Special Edition DVD, High Bit DVD, etc... Now they want to do it again with HD content (sure SE HD-dvd would exist as well but at least they are cheaper and don't add 1 more intrusive DRM layer). How long are you guys going to take it ?? How many times will you buy the same thing over and over ?? - addicted68098, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How biased can you get, you should atleast get your facts straight before you complain about something. The article was also very dumb, and isn't anything we haven't heard a thousand times already.
- jguy584, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I posted this comment in another PS3 story's comments, i added a little bit, and feel that it is still totally relevant to this topic.
I'm gonna try and speculate what Sony's thinking is here, they cant possibly be this dumb with this whole PS3 mess.
1.) PS3 is a blu-ray player + top of the line gaming console, and it costs roughly half of the first gen blu-ray players to come out.
2.) Sales may suck at first, but that's only until blu-ray picks up where upon prices will plummet, for both games and the system.
3.) PS3 does offer a motion sensor in their controllers as well, and i get the feeling that this is something that can easily be improved upon in the future, allowing for Wii like game play at least on some level. I don't know about whether they will have force-feedback or not, as i have heard both that they will and they wont.
4.) PS3 has the most computing potential. It seems to me that even though the graphics now may look to like 360 and even Wii, I'm sure that once Sony gets its whole dev kit ordeal worked out that we will start seeing PS3's true power. I just think that no one knows yet how to fully utilize all of PS3's potential.
I think that all Sony has to do is guarantee some AWESOME games for its new system, and all the other problems will take care of themselves in time.
All though it seems Wii is going to be the clear next-gen console winner in the next year or so, Sony may be aiming at being the winner further down the road. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Xbox 360 users have the worst analogies. SPAM
- psychicfriend, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Why is this article on the front page? I'm ok with Sony-PS3-disaster stories, but this article contains ZERO new information and is mostly some guy restating the obvious.
This kind of crap is causing me to give Digg stories a lower priority in my RSS rotation. - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well at the very best, our children will have an excellent case study in future years....
- asurroca, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The difference being, Microsoft can afford to risk billions on a pet project, Sony can't.
- piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sony is definitely losing market share but it's not THAT bad. They still have a lot of brand recognition and a ton of 3rd party support, especially in Japan. Everyone was spinning FUD when the 360 launched saying it was rushed, the shortage was doom, etc. and it's doing just fine. Once the big guns hit for PS3, namely the next installment of FF and MGS, there will definitely be high demand despite the high price. This is not to take away from the competition, who will have a field day picking up the PS3 fumble, but this definitely isn't the exaggerated end for Sony.
- Feanor, on 10/12/2007, -12/+14One more PS3, Wii, Microsoft, Apple, or XGL article and my head may explode.
- stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@danielandrews
They don't need 100 million people to pay that much at launch. They only need 5-6 million people to pay that much during the first 6 months of launch. That's not going to be hard at all. Like Sony said, and it's true, they'll sell out for the first few months on name alone. When you have back to back 100 million unit selling consoles you earn that right.
No one is being forced to buy anything. But yes, if you want a PS3 then you are forced to pay a bit extra for Blu-ray functionality. But it's only $100 more, and like I said, for those of us with an HDTV or even those who plan on buying one in the next few years it's a great deal. It will be a long time before either HD-DVD or Blu-ray(or hybrid) offer a standalone unit for close to $100.
I know lots and lots of people, including myself, that used their PS2 as their primary DVD player until standalone DVD players became more affordable. It was my primary player for about 2.5 years until P Scan DVD players dropped to about $125. I plane on doing the same with my PS3. Don't forget that the Dreamcast(no DVD playback) that had a year head start and cost half as much as the PS2($150 vs. $300) didn't do nearly as well.
I know you need an HDTV to take advantage of Blu-ray movies but I don't see that as a huge concern. HDTV's are dropping in price very quickly and the adoption rate is only going to increase. Aside from that, I bet most of those who have purchased HDTV's to this point are also those that are concerned about HD movie playback. Hell, Walmart is even pushing HDTV's now. I think I saw that commercial 20 times durning MNF last night. - ReCkLeSsX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I stopped reading after "My humble opinion..."
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My suggestion would be for them to forbid developers from ever releasing real-time videos/screenshots. The pre-render hype is the best they can hope for, no one will seriously consider paying $600 for it when they see what it's limits really are. It's a shifty overpriced Xbox. All those cell processor can be put to so much better use.
- yukevster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6PlayStation is safe believe you me. They have one huge advantage - Japanese loyalty.
- stappawho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ducnclor65
"As a consumer I always thought I had the right to know what I want."
And as a consumer you tell Sony what you want by buying or not buying their products. That's your choice. You don't have to buy it. You can buy a 360 or a Wii if either of those systems fit more into what they want. Or don't by anything at all.
@TheXeno
Amen brother. - DreadPirateWes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hopefully the Japanese habit of biting off more than they can chew will trickle down to the poor saps who stick this thing on their credit cards...
- matokwdd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thank you ku16610
Enough is enough, wait for the damn thing to come out and then bash it.
I laugh every time I read someone who simply hates Sony corp bashing the PS3.
Its unfortunate that the Gaming section of DIGG has turned to such crap - Wii is AMAZING, XBOX360 - woohoo, PS3 - Death to Sony
I hope that Sony sells more consoles than WII by the end of 07 and more than Microcrap by mid way through 08 and that the stock goes through the roof. - ku16610, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yawn , Yawn another article saying sony is going to fail etc , I wonder how many of these articles are written my MS Employees , MS invested heavly this year in viral marketing techniques its good to see the outcomes are so good still.
Wait for the Damn console to be released before you write an article about it because to be honest were frankly bored to death reading articles bashing the ps3.
Maybe just me but i play games to have fun , prehaps if the people writing these articles spent more time actually playing games they wouldnt feel the need to moan and speculate about the future so much and maybe enjoy the present. - crcurran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sinking ship? Pfft! This article is dumb. He doesnt say anything new and he over dramatizes the whole situation. The PS3 is a contender and will NOT implode. Overall I think x360 will barely pull ahead of the pack but the Wii could be the surprise in the end.
If Blu-ray fails the PS3 wont do as well but it wont implode.
With that said...Sony has made the worst decisions I have ever seen over the past 12 months for a company and the fact they are jamming down Blu-ray down are throats disgusts me. They really need to get their head out of their you-know-where or they will end up last, blu-ray will fail and there wont be a PS4. - dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Maybe it's because people don't know there's a bury option. I mean, the "digg" option is HUGE compared to the bury option.
- EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4As much as I dislike Sony, they can still play the PS3 right.
If they keep the supply low until they can mass produce the Cell and get loads of blue laser diodes it would come way down in manufacturing costs, plus there will be a big suply of them...
What is really killing them is the price. It scares gamers away, so it scares game developers away, and I think Ken is finally starting to realize that.
The PS3 has the ability to permanetly damage Sony, but it also has the ability to change the way they look at the gaming market and do something like what Nintendo is doing with the Wii. And design the next console for the gamers. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11You would think that even the anti-sony fanboys would be getting tired of this by now.
Doesn't the Bury "Ok, this is Lame" option do anything? - DreadPirateWes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Click Profile + History > Profile + Settings > Manage Topics > Uncheck what you don't want to hear about. Oh, you might uncheck the 'Whining' option too.
- pauljaroszewski, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1while i think 600 bucks is far too much...im not entirely sure that sony wouldn't be willing to take a bigger financial loss than with previous systems if the ps3 really is going to blow the xbox360 away...thats a big IF...but if they can get good press in that regard then all they need are a few insanely good titles to get some of that momentum back. its an uphill battle, but im not willing to count sony out just yet.

Fixed - dilibau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I admit the subject ain't that new and interesting and that the guy doesn't say anythin' new or spectacular, but in the light of recent events, with Dell making a Total Recall of Sony made batteries and the repeated stumblings with PS3, I tend to agree with him...even Kaz Hirai admitted Sony's decadence as a hardware manufacturer...let's hope this is the crysis before the regeneration

It does, but there just aren't enough fanbois on either side to keep up with the rate of submissions. What's funny is that the dupe police seem to keep out of these threads. Could be that they're still trying to get all the links to post in response, but I don't know... - oblongmouth, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3What a stupid comparison.
So if the PS3 is the Iceberg, did the Titanic shipbuilders make the (real) Iceberg? - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"Doesn't the Bury "Ok, this is Lame" option do anything?"
I don't know. I'm testing it on this article, mainly because it was submitted by cambrown. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I personally thing Song has gone way of the PS3 like they handle the debacel in handling the PSP run thus far. HORRIBLE. Way to go SONY Ken Kutiregui might as well pull Hiecherie on himself now before they kill him in Japan for this mess
