- sotopheavy, on 12/05/2007, -22/+329sonic + HD = crazy delicious!
- staxofmax, on 12/05/2007, -6/+204Super Mario World in HD would be epic.
- silentdragoon, on 12/05/2007, -4/+178It's a good thing we have a picture section now.... Oh, wait.
- Spartan225, on 12/05/2007, -2/+147I think it would be cool if more Game Developers did this for PSN, Live or Wii Market place. Re-master some of the classics like Mega Man, Sonic, Mario, or other beloved characters. I know it takes quite a bit of time to re-master all the stages and sprites but it could sell well. I don't think they should do it for ever game in a franchise, just the major ones.
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -1/+108How have developers forgotten how to make 2d platformers? Early sonic/metroid/mario, hell even entries as late as DK country, are way better than the crap they pump out nowadays except for Castlevania titles.
- arcooke, on 12/05/2007, -3/+61Love is a strong word...
- exomni, on 12/05/2007, -4/+62Never going to happen. Nintendo isn't even interested in making SUPER MARIO GALAXY in HD.
- macbookpromat, on 12/05/2007, -4/+54Man some folks tell me that's the same thing with Mr. Pibb and Red Vines.
- exscind, on 12/05/2007, -1/+48Developers seriously need to bring 2-D gaming into the 21st Century. It's so unfortunate that most of it (especially brilliant games like the Castlevania series) gets relegated to portable platforms. Because of this handheld standard, 2-D gaming still exists, but it hasn't evolved much.
In ye olden days, developers had to be really careful in regards to system resources. Limited video memory and 640x480 screen resolution caused artists to work with limited color palettes, limited on-screen art elements, small sprite sizes, small repeating tiles, etc. As an aside, one of the offshoots of this was creating a Luddite subculture among modern pixel artists who still abhor any use of rich textures, 3-D modeling, or photorealism. Working in such strict confines in 2007 is the equivalent of saying "well, we've always done it this way".
With today's console specs and the increased presence of high definition & progressive scan television, the gaming world is past ready for some seriously awesome razor-sharp, highly detailed 2-D gaming. There have been some noble efforts such as Alien Hominid and Guilty Gear, but that was a generation ago before high-definition gaming became possible.
Aside from a few simple XBLA-type games, Capcom is the first with this generation to try to really take it to the next level with the HD Street Fighter remake. Hopefully this title does very well, and will spur further development in the same vein.
The cost associated with 2-D animation has been commonly cited as a reason that it's not used as much as 3-D (in which animation is generally handled by key-frame scripts instead of sprite-based frames), but I have a hard time buying that logic. Most games in circulation today are expensive propositions with huge development teams. 3-D artwork is a multi-layered process which includes 2-D source artwork, 3-D modeling, texture creation, texture mapping, and 3-D rendering. 2-D artists are able to create a lot of output because their discipline is nowhere near as scattered. 3-D games are also far more labor-intensive from a programming perspective, involving complex physics engines. So I don't really buy that argument.
Quick background, I have decent experience as an artist and producer in independent Dreamcast game dev, so this is all coming from hands-on knowledge. - accessviolation, on 12/05/2007, -0/+45Unfortunately, yes. Everyone has a hard-on for 3D. They seem to forget that some of the old 2D platformers out there are STILL some of the best games ever made. The DS still has some good 2D platformers though. Super Mario DS was pretty damn fun. Pretty easy to complete 100%, but fun.
- airwalkery2k, on 12/05/2007, -1/+39I really wish that's where SEGA would go back to. They had several noble attempts bringing Sonic to the 3D realm, but I think they'd really make a smash hit if they went back to their old formula and spruced it up to today's standards.
I'm sure they could make it look even more amazing than that mock-up looks. - TheDanLane, on 12/05/2007, -1/+37If Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was in HD it'd be 1920x1080 not 1024x768!
- TastyCookie, on 12/05/2007, -1/+37I love the guy who made that picture. He makes a lot of awesome wallpapers.
- gaijintendo, on 12/05/2007, -2/+30And even if it is not a re-master, additional functionality would be amazing. If you could have Online Mario Kart 64 that would be so much fun, much like you can get Street Fighter II online on the Xbox Live arcade.

If "HD" is "exactly the same as before", then you're absolutely correct! - Doomsan, on 12/05/2007, -1/+25Super Marios Bros 3 in HD would be SUPER epic
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -2/+25WTB Metroid in HD!
http://alchemistdefined.wiredotaku.com/metroid_wal ... - Parasol, on 12/05/2007, -0/+21That is a truly beautiful 'what if' mockup!
I remember when 'Sonic High Speed' was announced around the time of the XBOX 360 launch and was hoping it would be something like that. 'Course, gotta leave it to modern-day-Sega to delay it for a couple of years and then churn out a dodgy emulator with ugly 'smoothing' as 'HD'. - nfollmer, on 12/05/2007, -0/+20(Not really a platformer, but....) Metal Slug Series FTW!
- itsburnsie, on 12/05/2007, -0/+18THIS.
I would pay whatever they asked me for HD Super Mario World. - patriot050, on 12/05/2007, -0/+17It would finally look like the game boxes cover art!
- fognozzle, on 12/05/2007, -1/+18If it's not remastered, it's not in HD.
- Fallout911, on 12/05/2007, -4/+21I WOULD BUY THIS IN AN INSTANT!
- SoCalMario, on 12/05/2007, -0/+16"Sonic 2 can never be made in HD, in fact in can never be remade unless they are going to start from the ground up. The original source code for all the classic Sonic games has been lost."
and you know this...... how???? - kettlehead, on 12/05/2007, -0/+15And there's still an empty void where a 2d castlevania for home consoles should be.
- viniciusfontes, on 12/05/2007, -1/+16Nintendo did it with Super Mario All-Stars and was a huge success.
- tekrat, on 12/05/2007, -2/+17They could do faux 3d like Super Mario DS did. The levels would be 3d but with one view and everyone moves on rails.
- aspec, on 12/05/2007, -0/+15I can't find a reference to that anywhere. Can you cite a source?
- accessviolation, on 12/05/2007, -0/+15This has to be done. Alert the internet!
- sexybobo, on 12/05/2007, -1/+15You know how ever time you post a message it tells you "Please allow up to 60 seconds for your comment to be saved." Maby next time you should try allowing 60 seconds for your comment to be saved instead of posting again.
- AXNJAXN, on 12/05/2007, -0/+14That's what Sonic Rush was.
- madk, on 12/05/2007, -0/+13Oh man...if Sega would actually create a new next gen 2D Sonic, I would forgive them for all of the wrong doing lately.
- STKD, on 12/05/2007, -4/+17Yoshi's Island in HD would be even Epicer.
(Yes, that's a word... now...) - dinostabOMG, on 12/05/2007, -0/+12Thoroughly agree - except one thing: you're underestimating the 2D capacity of 3D artists. We are pretty diversely skilled these days!
- acarr, on 12/05/2007, -0/+12I seriously doubt the source code for the original Sonic Games has been lost. Are you an idiot? Companies re-release games with an emulator because it's cheaper and faster.
- betobeto, on 12/05/2007, -2/+14DO. WANT.
That is all - Pritchard, on 12/05/2007, -0/+12I'd love to see Square start caring about its customers again -_-;;
- Nyyankeeman, on 12/05/2007, -1/+13Dr. Robotnik, dude!
- Cyber_Akuma, on 12/05/2007, -1/+12Resized with a blur filter is not HD, even if its a fancy blur filter like Super Eagle, 2XSal, or something like that, its just a blurred image being displayed larger than it should be.
If anything it looks LESS sharp, id rather it be pixelated than blurred up. - joehobbes, on 12/05/2007, -1/+12You do realize that's racketboy's Flickr account....
- KevinWhite, on 12/05/2007, -1/+12or at the very least 1280x720
- Diggtatorship, on 12/05/2007, -2/+13Like this one: http://alchemistdefined.wiredotaku.com/images/supe ...
Super Metroid HD anyone? - drizzlelicious, on 12/05/2007, -1/+11We also need this for Megaman
- krische, on 12/05/2007, -1/+10I think Nintendo would have to make an HD console first, before they worry about games in HD.
- kmcknight, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9hmmm this must be why it has [pic] at the end right?
- CompIsMyRx, on 12/05/2007, -3/+12Use Picture section please!
- super_spyder, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9many games that have gone open source have had that done, I am re-enjoying the marathon series in HD http://source.bungie.org/
- Shawn4168, on 12/05/2007, -1/+10Yeah, unfortunately, the 2D platforming genre seems to have been relegated to the handheld systems. However, New Super Mario Bros, Yoshi's Island 2, both Castlevania games, and the Sonic Rush games on DS have all been fantastic efforts.
- TheJenks, on 12/05/2007, -0/+8Id love that, everyone at work is always talking about how great 2d games were and how we can never get any for our next gen consoles. Sega could make such a come back if they went the way Nintendo did with the wii, only instead of funky controls they should have 2d platform games. They should go for HD graphics and 2d game play. Id queue up on the day of release for that because I know everyone would be after it.
- CLShortFuse, on 12/05/2007, -0/+8Even at 500x375 (which is what the preview image is) it still looks good. PS2, GameCube and Wii can do 640x480p. When you see the image fullscreen, it's 1024x768 and looks a lot better. PS3/PC/Xbox360 only. Though not "HD" by pixel count it still looks good. There's a Sonic the Hedgehod port on XBLA but unfortunately, it's just a post, not a remastering. I'd definitely love to see that.
I hope Street Fighter II paves the way for more remastered 2D games. I know Square-Enix is going it for the Final Fantasy games (on PSP). I would love to play Castlevania SotN in full 720/1080p. -
