Blogs are totally relevant and fair game when the are host to well thought-out and interesting arguments/articles. Blogs are NOT fair game when they simply say, check out this link. In that case, the digg story should go straight to the link and not give the blog any credit/traffic for being "news".
Learn to tell the difference. - aggies11, on 10/12/2007, -8/+51Pretty much a gamer's manifesto, except much more positive and uplifting, on the upcomming console war.
A love letter to gaming.
Aggies - Catachresis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42"Seriously, art direction accomplishes more than all the bump-maps and bloom lighting in the world."
this, this is the thing. this is the thing right here. - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -6/+47@roar84
Congrats. It takes a big man to insult some anonymous guy on the Internet.
Also, I'm guessing the "84" in your name is your IQ. - Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -8/+46The content on digg has always reflected what people are interested in. Sucks for you if you dislike what's popular. =P
- Mudcrutch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+39great line:
"But to go from the perma-archival quality of DVD, which still looks really ***** sharp on the right set-up, to go to Blu-Ray's more better sharpness? The need isn't really there, yannow? If the average person really needed high-definition anything then why the hell is YouTube so popular?" - afex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34nope, you can't. 250x3=750.
for more, see 'calc.exe' - afex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34what's odd is, the first thing i thought when i first saw the zelda shot on top was 'wow, that looks like so much fun to play'. not 'wow those graphics are great' (even though they are), but it just made me really excited to PLAY it. its been awhile since i've seen a screenshot that make me think more about the game itself then how many fragments a barrel can explode into...
can't wait. - ahatter, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33if you dont wanna read nintendo news get off the game topics..
- Araya213, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22"the first thing i thought when i first saw the zelda shot on top was 'wow, that looks like so much fun to play"
Yes, exactly! Games have become more beautiful but boring and monotonous. Hopefully the Wii will put the fun back in gaming. I have always had fun playing Zelda and Mario games, not so much with Halo and the like. - Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21Well, this pretty much sums up what 90% of all Digg users haven been trying to say since the infamous words "Five-hundred and ninety-nine dollars." We just havent been able to put it as eloquently.
The PS3 is the epitome of Sony's arrogance as a result of 10 years on top of the video game world. - PFS1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Really? I thought it was pretty well put. He came up with some good arguments and examples I hadn't thought of...the Youtube one was best.
- spucky138, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24That blog summed up exactly how I feel about the PS3.
- bightchee, on 10/12/2007, -5/+24I am still not purchasing anything by Sony after the root kit problem their audio CDs caused... and with this article I am reminded of all the Walkman and Discman products I had that broke for no obvious reason.
- americankgb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Nintendo still has the best hardware out there though. I remember that my friends game boy advance Sp went through a whole cycle in the washing machine and still worked. The only thing that busted was the back light. He called Nintendo and they ended up replacing it. It rather buy a system from a company who is going to back up their products with good support instead of a company who screws their customers *points to ms and Sony.
- mrkmrk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18ahell: osnap. That is all. And 84 must be a typo, because that's a bit high for someone like this.
- ohmar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20perhaps that is a reflection that the Wii is actually worth reading about.
- royalwcheese, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18"Reggie Fils-Aime once told me that perhaps the GameCube was too inexpensive, leading people to view it as a toy, compared to the price of the competition's hardware. There is, after all, this prevailing mentality that if something is cheap, then it must also be cheap in quality, and that if something is expensive, then it must be quite a piece of machinery."
That is why it is $249 not $199. - Shabadoo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Any blogger who uses "***** pleez", and "deez nutz" is aces in my book. I wish we could digg twice.
- epilonious, on 10/12/2007, -9/+23Drink some more water.
[/couldn't resist] - angelof, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Just wondering if you hate the Wii and Nintendo so much, why do you read the article and take the time to comment. Is it possible you are a closet Nintendo fan?
- bightchee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13When I saw my seven year old nephew step on his Gamecube while running past it I realized Nintendo really is mindful of their demographic and how their products will be handled. I believe this is the reason they declined the idea of installing a hard drive in the Wii.
- SocialPoison, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I'll admit, there's a little Nintendo Fan-Boy deep in my heart that jumped for joy at that article. I was behind Nintendo all the way up from the 8-bit days until the Game Cube... where the PS2 simply took over (I still play Smash Bros on my N64). The Wii is bringing me back to the Nintendo wing... and I'm very excited.
My roommate is as much of a Sony fan boy as I am a Nintendo one... which has made for some interesting discussions. November is going to be an exciting month. It crossed my mind that we might run into "TV Real estate" issues, with both of us owning new systems at the same rough time.
But then something occurred to me:
I'll be able to get a Wii on the 19th with fairly good certainty. I bet the GameStop in Bellingham gets two PS3s, and unless my roommate shanks one of the lucky buyers on their way out the door then there's no way he's getting one.
So he'll be saying a PS3 would be awesome as he pouts in his chair.... while I play Red Steel. - jfujita, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19I wish I had two wii
- decay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"What Sony needs to quickly freakin' realize is that video game systems are a luxury, not a necessity."
Classis. - mt066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Now that you mention it, I remember in college we had 3 ps2's that were in varying states of broken. They were all out of warranty so we'd have to try all sorts of ridiculous stuff to make them work. Eventually one would, so we'd use it until it stopped working agian, and then switch to another one. Anyone else have this problem?
- ahatter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11maybe those screens look like crap b/c they are not full size.. just maybe.
- Charron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Not the same issue, but when I got my PS1 back in the day (and not even in the launch window, mind you, almost a year or two afterwards) it came, in-box, with broken memory card slots. As in, they didn't read memory cards. But we didn't know until we bought a memory card, not long after the warranty expired. It would have cost us the same to repair it or buy an N64, so we bought the N64 and I've never bought a Sony machine since. (Ok, except the monitor that came with my HP computer 'cause they were out of the HP monitor. Even that didn't work right all the time.) Point is, the blog is right, Sony stuff breaks a lot more than it really should, at least in my experience (which is apparently not unique).
- rmany2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I watch Chappelle's Show, Colbert Report, and other TV show clips on there all the time and it doesn't bother me a bit. I'm interested in the content.
Same concept for Wii, I want games that hold my attention on gameplay, not on graphics alone. - Stalks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11The only console I will ever own, is an Xbox. And I only use it a media centre (xbmc is so, so good), but I digg you both down not because of any sort of fanboism, but because you are being a jealous jerk.
What gives you the need to post negative comments on a Nintendo article? Do you really feel _that_ threatened? - Stalks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9He calls you whiny, and you return with a whine.
Oh the irony. - h0kiez, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Lol @ Afex. I guess he missed the announcement that the Wii is $249.
- Evic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Excellent blog. Personally, I've always purchased a Nintendo system - it's always been about the games for me. I still have my SNES, N64, and GC (as well as a DS). I've owned a PS2 and an XBox.
There are periods where my gaming systems sit dormant for 2-3 weeks. I ended up selling the PS2 and the XBox because I never played them.
But the Nintendo systems I simply can not sell - they are to damn fun when I pick it up after 2-3 weeks without playing. The PS2 and XBox games are the same old every time - race around this track, throw this ball, jump here.
Nintendo has consistently made games that wow me in every department. Anyone remember how they felt when they played Mario 64 for the first time! I could not believe how huge the world was - it was awesome. - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10One of the best articles ever written in the field of gaming. A thousand stars.
- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Great article in my opinion. the only downside is the reverting to LOL and LOLZ and deez nuts, and such. It is a very thoughtful and solid article outside of the dumb comments.
I am more than excited to watch the Wii do well, and watch the PS3 and Xbox360 argue over whose games look better. The only next gen battle that is going on is between the PS3 and XB360, the Wii is in an entirely different league. - JDoggqx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9The best part is that the NGC games are dirt cheap also.
I recently picked up Killer 7, Viewtiful Joe, and Resident Evil 4 (My pick for the best game this gen without a doubt), for a little more than $30.
I've owned all three of this gens systems, and my NGC has been easily getting the most play time. - vernsan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9They're bigger resolution pictures just made smaller so it looks even more jagged.
- onehrcleaner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I bought an original gameboy in '90, it still works. 16, almost 17 years later. My PS is busted and my 360 already seems unstable.
Nintendo looks better and better with every passing day. - Jarasmen, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Not really "our". Just yours.
- IheartZombies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6so? If it wasn't for nintendo we'd still be playing coleco vision and atari.
- Sartori, on 10/12/2007, -14/+20Good for Mr. Mielke.
I'd rather have two 360 or two PS3s than a Wii - both look like they'll have games I enjoy more, which is surely the entire argument settled.
Buy whichever one has the games you like. If that's more than one of them, so be it. Just stop the pissy childish arguments! - MoeWasHere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It depends - some people don't like to shoot the ***** out of everything.
See: Japan. - pathy, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Whimper.
I wish people would stop comparing them. I really do.
As far as I see it the Wii shouldn't be compared to the PS3 and the 360.
The PS3 and the 360 are taking what we already have, and have had for a while, and trying to improve it. That's what they're doing. They're trying to increase the graphics, increase what can be done with games, increase the multiplayer, etc.
They're trying to improve what we already have. There is NOTHING wrong with this. It's FINE AND DANDY. Seriously. They've got their sights set and are trying to improve gaming for people. (Or atleast that's what they're sotra trying. Sony is pushing BluRay a bit too much, but bleh.)
Nintendo are going for a different market. Nintendo, while they will expand the control method of games and make them more accessible. They've said that this is what they're trying to do.
Personally, the whole 'Nintendo is for gamers' thing, I don't buy. Nintendo are trying to make themselves for everyone. This isn't a bad thing either.
It comes down to preference, guys. Now come on. Stop the bashing of the 360 and the PS3 because they use the same control method. I've yet to see one truly inspired way that the Wiimote is used. Although feel free to show me some examples. As a small note, I've played with games that have moveable objects in them (I know there's a golf one on TV at the moment here in the UK), so things like Wii sports won't impress me. Nor will shooters.
The integration of Red Steel impresses me a little, using both the nunchuck and the Wii of course.
Cough... Wrapping up.
Sony and Microsoft are trying to improve what the PS2 and XBox already offered - They are upgrades. They will allow for better games (Whether that be more advanced AI, Physics or Graphics.), and will reach out to more people. (Multiplayer - An area I really think Nintendo needs to expand past it's bloody game codes.)
Nintendo are seeking to remove the boundary of controllers, as well as making games more engaging. They're making their console as friendly as possible to nearly everyone, and they do have some innovative ideas. (The Wiimote storing an avatar I like. Although I don't like the avatars much...)
Remember guys. The platform doesn't make the game. It simply dictates how it plays. Whether that is moving your arms, speaking, tapping a screen, or moving your thumbs and fingers over a pad, keyboard or mouse. - zone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I rather get 1 plus 4 controlers.. and party up!
- JDoggqx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Your post has an interesting point, but I wonder if they can finance the lean years of the console during the 10 year plan. Many people have stated they won't buy a PS3 until it hits $300 or less. If Sony is already taking a huge loss on each PS3, then how soon can they hit $300 in price drops? Even a similar move as the PS2's $100 price drop a little bit after the one year mark would still keep the PS3 out of many people's hands. Meanwhile the 360 and possibly the Wii would probably have also dropped in price.
Lastly it should be inferior, not "in-superior." - kmbrooks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It doesn't seem so ironic, considering that he interrupts every other paragraph with a mention of his wanting to buy a PS3 for Ridge Racer 7.
- psbpv3o, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I'll probably be buying a wii first, but I know I will eventually be buying a ps3. The games that they have announced for it are well worth the $600, for me: Gran Turismo5, Tekken 6, Monster Hunter 3, Final Fantasy 13?, God of war 3, Devil May cry 4, Ratchet and clank 4?, and Megal Sear solid 4
So unless the system explodes in your face and all the games get canceled I'm anticipating the day that I can buy one.
Which, I think is the state of mind that is part of Sony's strategy. They would be incredibly stupid to think this thing is going to be huge launch seller. The statements about it being able to last for 10 years and the fact that it is highly priced and its a technology overkill (barely anyone even has good enough hdtvs to see the result of blu-ray). Shows that they aren't in this for a quick buck, they are in it for the long-haul. They want to get it out there to the early adopters (as the article points out) to test it out and see its flaws and glitches (like many other new technologies), probably the reason they are launching with so few systems, because they know no one who isn't a huge fanboy with a bundle of money is going to buy this thing within the first couple of months. So they get it out there and once the blu-ray, and many other components, get cheaper they lower the price to get to a bigger group of people until its at more of a flat price that's reasonable. I don't think Sony is launching this blindly. They are a big company. A company that has enough analyst and enough people working out the ps3 strategy to know how to work this out.
On the other hand I could be wrong and the cell and blu-ray could utterly fail and be deemed in-superior, which would end up wrecking sony only for them to revamp or be lost in the pit of failed, once great, companies on the count of ignorance and stupidity. I guess we'll just have to wait and see!!! - shaggtastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6YouTube is popular and people don't care about its image quality because it is free.
[/captain obvious]
I do, however, agree that BluRay/HD-DVD is unnecessary (especially until one of them becomes a standard format). - Blizaine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Why stop at 2?
If he buys 16 Wii's instead of a PS3 he will have the combined power of a PS3! - whitesaint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I know this is off-topic, but I just got a widescreen 1080p HDTV and was wondering if Wii games will be widescreen enough to fit on the 16:9 canvas?
