- nTensify, on 10/12/2007, -1/+43I'll believe it when I read the Nintendo press release or when I get my hands on one and dump the ROM.
- terminalpariah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25I'm skeptical. On the one hand, they are going to need some stable software to make WiiConnect24 work, and Linux seems pretty appropriate for the job. On the other hand, it seems like something that Nintendo should be bragging about. Maybe they don't want to scare people away? It's true that they have yet to release any hardware specs.
Still, they have some of the best software engineers in the world. It's not like they couldn't create a super-stable embedded OS if they wanted to.
I'll digg this because I think it deserves discussion, but I still have reservations about the title and description - this is rumour. - BrainInAJar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21"although packaging propriatry stuff with linux is technically a GPL violation"
It is most certainly not a GPL violation... a GPL violation would be linking to the kernel with proprietary code & then distributing it. If you write a proprietary piece of software that runs on the linux kernel, you are free to distribute the both of them together, provided you offer the source for all the GPL components. - CrazyForSW, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Yeah, could be just another blogger claiming to know stuff. A few posts down he also confirms the mic, I'll digg it just to see what other users think.
- PFS1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16This "article" reads like a fanboy's wet dream taken for fact, and nothing more. At the most, it's a calculated attempt at generating some blog traffic.
Everything mentioned in the article would be GREAT if it was true, but not even a half-assed source ("TheGuy", anyone?) is given. This is all pure speculation.
I'd love to hear it confirmed, but until then, mark this as inaccurate. - Propapanda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Yeah I'm pretty skeptical about it too but it would certainly be cool if it turns out to be true. It doesn't seem completely unreasonable except who it comes from.
I'm sure this guys full of crap, just like every other blogger pretending to know stuff but it seems pretty believable as a guess. At least it's not about a visor. - breakfastpants, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Not only did he get that wrong, he also got the part about checking code contribution logs wrong. They don't have to contribute anything until they distribute; and even then they don't have to contribute it through a regular source code checkin at the 'official' place.
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I shall take this with a grain of salt, but interesting none the less. There is nothing wrong going with the Linux kernel, and it dose have track record for being stable. If they did so with the Wii and built a custom GUI around it thats great. Then the Linux community can say look at what the non-geeks are using, just like TiVO.
- cam2009, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11yeah, his blog is pretty bs: http://saruwatari-wii.blogspot.com/
most of it'd be pretty cool, and plausible, but the linux thing seems highly unlikely. also, the mic? don't you think they would've put in in yet? if it was linux, you wouldn't be able to do anything. nintendo will make sure to put in a simple, ds-style menu system. if it's just to help cut costs, I could see it happening I guess. but if you read his blog, there are some things that just don't make sense. this was regarding the mic in games:
"In some spots in Twilight Princess when using stealth the enemies can hear you if you make a sound..."
stupidest wii rumor I've heard in a while. when you're "stealthing" in a game you don't make noises like you're really stealthing, this would be incredibly annoying if it did. I lost faith in what he said after that. - sneakerelph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7AMAZING BREAKING NEWS: Google tells us that ubuntu linux will be the core software of the wii. Their site uses AJAX to tell us that Vista will NOT be used in the Wii.
there. thats the perfect title to get to the front page. - giantrobot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Checklist:
1. Wii -- Check!
2. Linux -- Check!
3. Google ... no Check!
4. AJAX ... no Check!
Pity. Only two out of four of the topics required to get onto the front page of digg. - rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You also forgot 6. Digg and 7. AMAZING
- drakonite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Pure speculation/BS by someone who can barely write...
Marked as inaccurate. - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5C'mon Nintendo. I was going to buy the Wii anyways, you don't need to convince me!
- stephenwq, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Haha, some people are going to be pretty pissed if this is wrong.
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13there's one easy way to prove it without nintendo saying anything, their code contibutions.
anyone care to check logs? :)
although packaging propriatry stuff with linux is technically a GPL violation so i wonder how smart the author actually is... - captainbluebear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4What are you playing your Wii on? Would WiiTV not be useless?
- santouras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Manhunt does the same thing, it uses a mic so if you shout something, the enemy AI can 'hear' you and chase you down. I think these kind of things are pretty cool, but they need to be optional in case you're playing in an environment that has alot of ambient noise.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"The system itself will put on the 512 mb memory stick integrated in the system and its hidden and cant be removed from the console."
I'd be more willing to believe that it's on a completely seperate 512mb of flash (or perhaps smaller), so that it can have plenty of space for firmware updates without clogging up your 512mb of reserved space. Or perhaps the 512mb is just a 1GB stick that's partitioned.
Either way, it's all speculative. - veza, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3How about the people who are commenting his blog.. "hey can you tell me the name of new donkey kong?" and other *****... http://saruwatari-wii.blogspot.com/2006/07/software-in-wii.html#c115395982000191521
- achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The guy who rote this artical can't spel.
- KJSatz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So I read the bit about the mic, and I went into MS Paint with a pic of a Wiimote, and I moved the speaker like he said and added another (the mic) above the Wii logo at the bottom. And they're like three inches apart---no "like a phone" here. Then when all the honchos at Nintendo say it isn't true, he inarticulately accuses them of lying in a cover-up for some arbitrary reason.... He's full of bull. Inaccurate rumor mongering.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I find it funny how every other Wii story submitted is reported as inaccurate... Nintendo is really doing a good job keeping details about the Wii concealed :P
- badcarl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+210. Apple
You can hook up your iPod to you Wii to listen to your favorite video game tracks! - davehendrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah "regulare" is a winner in the first paragraph. This is just a blog of some guy who can't spell and doesn't have any reputable sources (...er...or any sources) for his claims. So yeah, I wouldn't believe this guy. However, the PS3 is confirmed to be built on Linux, so it isn't completely implausible.
- Arlo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I thought the wii was based on the same development environment as the gamecube.
- gcube9x, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Maybe it will be TRON!
- felipecn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mr.Glass, it's an INDUSTRY STANDARD, not a gaming one....
- greyfade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ask for the source.
they'll be legally bound to under the GPL.... as well as for any other GPLed software they happen to have put on. - aoe2bug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@captainbluebear, i think he meant a la TiVo, but then where're the input into the Wii?
- bloodylip, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4You also forgot the following:
8. BREAKING!
9. Ubuntu - afx1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3First a 1.5x GC GPU...now Linux.
- thx1200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Would it not be obvious from the developer kits for the Wii that the system uses Linux? From what I heard, the Wii dev-kits were souped up GameCubes, which fits with everything else reported about the Wii. It probably uses a newer OS of whatever the 'cube used. And that's based on the same amount of information the author had with his fanboy Linux claims (ie, NO information, just speculation).
The author does not sound like an authoritative figure and there is no evidence to back his claims. If a former employee at a software house who was working on a Wii game told me this, then I might buy it. - PicklePower, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4SONY COPIED NINTENDO
- Mr.Glass, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Linux is the industry standard? show me 2 pevious consoles that ran on linux.
- tjmb9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2cam, what about resident evil for ds? there is a mode where the mic works in exactly that way.
- chapi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Nintendux distro ;-)
- Guvante, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The mic does not make any sense though, the Wii controller is not designed to be put anywhere near your face, meaning it can not properly pick up your voice, and Nintendo doesn't outright lie, they simply patter around the truth on unreleased details.
Either way, since he has not given any details as to his source, it sounds pretty inaccurate to me. - greyfade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Playstation 2 linux kit?
Dreamcast Linux?
X-Box Linux? - cedrick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1one word: blog. i want to know who thid guy got this info from.if its true.....OH MAN!!!! THE HOLY UNION OF MARIO AND THE PENGUIN!!!
- wyrdness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If this is true, then it's just going to be a cut-down embedded Linux kernel. Not any of the GNU software or other utilities. It won't be visible to the end user.
- stephenwq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Awesome! (if this is true.........)
Nintendo is making all of the right moves here.
They get in the family audience, because its cheap and games like mario some kids probably want to play, as well as older people.
They get to the gamer audience, its a gaming console after all
Now this will heavily attract the modding/linux userbase, meaning more popularity.
I wonder if they will muck up at some point.....
nah. - Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1linux now nintendo just needs widgets then they can brag
why mind you
1. news feeds for the gamer or the adult who is to lazy to get off the wii and on the computer (man that sounds so nasty)
2. game updates for possible releases on the wii
3. creativity amoung developers because if it isnt just controled by nintendo (or costing anything) people can just make widgets to make the wii more gamer related (im sure a parent will complain that there kid allready checked the weather on the wii becuase of a widget from the weather channel instead of going outside and not devoleping catorax but who cares and yes i cant spell catorax)
4.run it with ajax and make that checklist
5. a google module would complete it and on the plus side make sony scream theft after they announce 10 seconds later they added widgets too
wow i maneged to pull a google ajax and sony reply in there and a bad games related statement so does this mean i get digged or burried - darkmule, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, the article is poorly written, so thats a bit unfortunate.
However, its a nice theory, a pretty good one at that. Only time will tell I guess. - jonesin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Smart move.
- natterca, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Zies is kaos! We do not use punctuation here!
- KyleMistry, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1If this is true, then people are going to be making some pretty interesting hacks for the Wii. WiFi WiiTV, anyone?
- erkokite, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2You sir, are an idiot.
- Ninjab3ar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1what?!?! dont tell me youre going to belive this nonsense!?!?!
normaly i am very skeptical when ppl release information not yet released by the original company that made it. in this case the information is less credible because it is made by just "some blogger" in the infinitely large universe we know as the internet - Langford, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1It's a very cool idea if true, but what would be better is if they simply left the system open and documented in such a way they it was easy to port regular distros over to it. If someone is dealing with a special Nintendo-only version of Linux, it's somewhat limiting, even though it's probably a nice thing to have.
