wouldnt that be a rewind? - preppypoof, on 10/12/2007, -12/+57they listed the PS3 as best new console and the Zune as the best portable audio. I wouldn't give them much credibility.
- icebrand, on 10/12/2007, -9/+41Nothing against the drive itself, its actually kinda cool, but it plays movies and nothing else. Thats like saying the best console of the year is a DVD player.
Plus it beat out the Xbox camera, which is actually used in context with gaming. What is up with that? - nadadingsda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19@icebrand: "Thats like saying the best console of the year is a DVD player."
Well.. you know, some think the best console of the year is a Blu-Ray player. - thegreenone, on 10/12/2007, -17/+25I agree, with IGN. I think the HD-DVD add on is really nice. Plus it's cool to have it has an option if I want it, unlike with the PS3.
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11It's because of crap like this that IGN is a joke.
- djjuice, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14they also put the Zune as being better than the iPod
- TBobes, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15The Zune is better than the iPod...
- navster15, on 10/12/2007, -11/+18Nevermind the lack of games, but as a piece of hardware, the PS3 is sexy as hell, and it is a good value for the price. I think IGN was just looking at what the console can do and decided that the PS3 as a standalone piece of hardware is better than the Wii. I don't believe they took into account the games for the respective consoles.
- NipGrip, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Confusing it for a PS3, they actually held up a George Foreman Grill announcing it the winner.
- miketuck3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7ok sherlock explain to me why the 70% of gamers that dont have hdtv's need a bluray player as standard?
- Hale, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I have the HD-DVD add-on and it has been awesome, but I agree that IGN's credibility is questionable after picking PS3 over the Wii for Best New Console. And Fight Night Round 3 for X360 Best Sports Game? Ugh.
- Zowsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6maybe because its in the 360 section and not the PS3 section?
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7No, releasing games that require HD-DVD ADD ON would be a huge mistake.
MSoft did it right by releasing this add-on as a reply to Sony's Blu-Ray fiasco and by doing so they basically said: "Hey look - we can play HD movies too AND we're not going to force the extra cost onto the consumer to push a format."
If they started releasing games using the HD-DVD drive then they are basically forcing the extra cost on the consumer.
It's also let MSoft keep a lower price. If Sony had taken a similar step and released a Blu-Ray drive as an add on or an option (better than the 20Gig / 60 Gig thing which is a joke) then they might have actually been able to produce a respectable number of consoles at launch, as well as keeping the price down and getting more sales as a result. The larger install base at launch might have retained some of the 3rd party devs who have jumped ship on the waffle iron.
MSoft's model is much better, but they can get away with it because they aren't trying to make money of Blu-Ray royalties by winning a format war that is just costly to consumers.
As far as it winning best peripheral of the year... well, maybe there just weren't a lot of PERIPHERALS worth mentioning. Can anybody think of an add-on they'd rather see named? I can't seem to think of any noteworthy peripherals at all. Maybe a steering wheel? Live headsets?
/doesn't own an xbox/360/PS-anything - DFENS, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8No joke - my thoughts exactly.
So a peripheral that makes the 360 play high quality movies like the PS3 and cost as much as the PS3 (whether you buy it or the cheap or expensive, it upgrades your price to the cheap or expensive PS3) somehow that's the best thing this year?
My vote would actually be the 360 driving wheel - finally a wireless driving wheel that doesn't suck and uses the same battery packs you have anyway. That's pretty cool.
How about the wiimote? Or does that not count by their definition of peripheral? Hell, a lot more things then that came out that top that - even the lame little things that are extra for the 360 top the hddvd player, imho. sigh. - danc4498, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@danc4498
Upon further review, these were in the IGN Gear section. Doesn't necessarily have anything to do with gaming. - awm4, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I have the 360 HD DVD player and I will have to tell you that it is incredible. Well worth the $200.
What sucks is that half of the HD DVDs are over 30 freaking bucks. - danc4498, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For new console of the year they chose PS3. All the negative press around the PS3 and positive press around the Wii, and their only reason for going against the Wii was that it didn't support HD graphics.
- BlackKnight6, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@Tanpreet and others on this subject
Yea, like we NEED blu-ray for good games, give me a break.
(A warning to those reading, below it will be kinda long and and possibly boring, especially if you don't game on the computer or don't build your PC and understand it) but not everything can be understood simply, some things in life are more complex then you think, though I have put this in words to make it understandable to nearly everyone. So some people who do understand this stuff with np may think I sound stupid, which is not the case.)
If ANYONE here knows anything about games and hardware its that disc storage is one of the LOWEST factors (if not the lowest) in how good a game can be. The WORST case scenario for a game on the 360 is say a HUGE campaign AND multiplayer. So lets say 3 DVDs. 2 DVDs would be single player (Just like RE4 was on the GC, no one complained about that because it was such an AWESOME game). And then the 3rd DVD would be multiplayer. That is the worst I can imagine it getting on the 360, that is if developers some how find a real reason to need 28GB of space (dual layer DVD=9.4GBx3=28.2GB), which they won't. Oblivion installs to 4.7 GB on my hard drive on my computer and it did not use procedural texturing, which could have cut that down alot. Textures is a big part of good looking games and replacing alot of the game textures saves lots of space, hence why I talk about it alot. Btw, procedural texturing cannot work on all textures like a texture of a face, a texture of a photo on a table, a texture of a billboard, but it can work on things like the wood grain of the table the photo is on or dirt, grass, metal, rocks, leaves, various wall materials like tiles and plaster and so on.
http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/10391/RoboBlitz-to-Feature-Procedural-Texturing-System/
"Textures are the majority of the budget for most 3D games. As soon as we replaced our big library of textures with procedural equivalents, we cut our footprint to below 1/20 its original size..."
"If RoboBlitz used traditional texture maps, the game's size would be hundreds of megabytes, possibly up to a couple of gigabytes. By using ProFX procedural textures Naked Sky is able to squeeze the entire game into only 50MB"
This is only one technique to save space. We don't need HD discs (HD DVD and Blu-ray) for games yet, not even. I am not saying procedural texturing is a sole reason why HD discs are not needed yet, what I am trying to explain is that there are many and better solutions then having to buy expensive hardware (HD disc drives). And then this doesn't even matter because it comes down to RAM. Even if you have an HD disc holding 15GB of solely textures, both systems only have 512 MB of RAM. And with that mentioned its worse for the PS3 since the PS3 RAM is divided 256MB system mem and 256 gfx mem (where the textures would go).
Lets say the a dev making a game for the 360 goes with smaller texture sizes using various and compressions and then doesn't use those compressions and techniques (though they still would) on the PS3 due to plenty of disc space (but disc space is NOT the only reason files, like textures, are compressed, that is why I said they still WOULD compress and so on with the PS3 version), both have 512MB of ram, though the 360's is unified and can use more where it wants without sacrifices(like textures), the PS3 would have to have more load times or more texture loading (similar to Halo 2) due to the same textures having larger sizes AND due to space for textures limited to 256MB.
Hopefully most people can understand that extreme paraphrasing. - CanadianGeese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have the HDDVD add-on, and though I can't use it to actually play games, I can stay connected to Xbox LIVE and chat with my friends and receive game invites while watching an HDDVD on it. I'm very happy with it.
- TheFinestShadow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41. You can't expect much from this, it's IGN. They've been making me mad for years.. since Dreamcast. :P
2. I don't know what to make of the drive itself. Remember in the past we've seen add-ons for consoles. Take Sega for example: the addition of the Sega CD to the Genesis was a great idea, but it failed. Why? Because it was a console add-on. There was also another add-on with the N64 that failed if I remember correctly although I can't remember exactly what it was. So who knows. Maybe this will take off. I just personally think that MS should put the HD-DVD drive in later 360s. - mmortal03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well, you don't need an Xbox 360 to use it, so therein lies another reason why it is good: You can hook it up to your computer: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=748426

"for X360 Best Sports Game?"
see...right there...'for X360 Best Sports Game'. Let me translate for you. X360 stands for Xbox 360 if I am correctly interpreting the author. And if I understand correctly, he is referring to the awards section that was specifically for Xbox 360 only. If you go to the site, it has sections dedicated to each console and a variety of other categories. You're right though, the Xbox 360 version did have an unfair advantage in the running for this award...because it was actually designed for the Xbox 360. - ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It may not be a gaming peripheral, but like it and I don't even own a 360.
Microsoft has recently (quietly) started supporting them for XP. Run Windows Update and just plug it in and everything is deleted. You can't beat a HD-DVD player for $160 ($200 - $40 circuit city coupon).
I am no MS fan, but this is a brilliant way for them to help seed HD-DVD acceptance. - MomentDEFINED, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Best Gaming Peripheral means "game console accessory". It doesn't have the "bettered your gaming experience" idea attached to it.
- Barr08, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@nreynolds
The price of a 20 gig PS3 with Bluray is 500 (Bluray not an option, some users won't even use it and waste the extra money)
The price of a 20 gig 360 with HDDVD is 600 (400 plus 200 for the optional add-on, spend the 200 if you want the function, nothing is forced)
So while it is about a 100 dollar difference, I wouldn't call the PS3 a steal in comparison. Also, the 50 dollars a year is worth the better online gameplay experience of a fully regulated online community. When the PS3 becomes more popular and actually gets some games worth playing online, users are going to have a hell of a time dealing with the free online community for the PS3 when Sony decides not to regulate and maintain it. You get what you pay for. - rabidmonkeys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3SPARTAN777
RTFA...
"The only thing is that it is scandalously expensive- a COMPLETE RIP OFF. A hundred bucks for a 20 gig? I can't even buy hard drives with that low of a capacity for my pc. Also, it costs 10 times what its worth, no exaggeration.
darkcyde: the original xbox was supposed to have a load of killer apps, it ended up just being a big memory stick."
Dumbass, they said it's the HD-DVD drive. NOT THE HDD. - tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Indeed. I used to visit IGN religiously back in the earlier part of the decade...they were not as big as they are not, and not whoring themselves out for advertisements. Yes, I know bandwidth is not free, but some ads just keep me from the site entirely, like the full page ones.
- MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Being a PS3 owner I'll agree with the George Foreman comment. It even gets as hot as one. I have yet to work up the courage and put chicken in it though.
- aegis9975, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While I think the Zune is vastly inferior to the iPod, it does deserve the award for the best audio player for 2006. Apple's iPod offering last year offered no real innovation and where rehashes of the already successful iPod formula, while Zune presented an effective new competitor. And competition is best for the industry.
As far as the PS3, from the hardware perspective it is the best console of 2006; though perhaps not from a cost perspective. Looking at the long-term we'll have to see how true it materializes to truly judge IGN's wisdom. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lighten up, francis.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the best gaming peripheral of the year is the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver.
For $20 you can use wireless 360 controllers, the headset and the gaming wheel (which isn't so hot) on your PC to play PC games.
A great value and a great idea. And it helps you play games, not watch movies. - BlackKnight6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the Zune is great EXCEPT for the DRM *****. I guess MS has a soft spot for music pubs and their battle with piracy...lol
- sldSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Hah. Best controller = Pelican NERF Controller for PS2?
Did they just give a 3rd party NERF-covered controller the award over the Wiimote? Crazzzziness. - geektanic08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2they didn't say that the ps3 was the console of the year over all. that's only in the "gear category", which makes sense. the overall winners will be released in january.
- tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I guess a lot more people respect Microsoft or Nintendo over Sony nowadays.....Either that, or the Sony fanboys are too busy search for positive aspects of the PS3 to post their finds on Digg.
Anyone who does not promotes a fanboy's system of choice is automatically labeled a fanboy themself. I love how the world works - hansamurai, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Or maybe they actually tried the controller and liked it better instead of assuming it was just worse?
- isayx3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"if they were gunna choose a fight night, why would the choose the 360 over the ps3 one?"
If you read the ps3 reviews you will find that although similar, the arenas and spectators on the ps3 does not look as good as it does on the 360. The Ps3 version also have some framerate issues.
So overall the 360 version is more polished. - HeatVision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I think the Zune is great EXCEPT for the DRM *****. I guess MS has a soft spot for music pubs and their battle with piracy...lol"
I don't understand why people harp on the DRM of the Zune, since songs bought from iTunes also have DRM. Sure it adds DRM to any song your send someone, but at least you have the option to send it to someone and they can listen to it a couple of times (or capture the audio out from their headphone jack). Should Apple copy this feature, do you honestly think they won't put DRM on their stuff?
From what I've read, the Zune doesn't act as a USB storage device and to me that's a bigger strike than DRM'd wireless file transfers. - BlackKnight6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As compared to people who bought a PS3 without Blu-ray? Oh yea, you can't do that so we have no idea how many bought the PS3 and would rather have paid less for no HD movie support. I don't think the million PS3's sold (though it could be under a million with all the returns from the damn scalpers they need to count also) ALL wanted the blu-ray, I am sure many would have rather saved 200 bucks (or more) instead.
Only if Blu-ray was optional with the PS3 would we know how many really would get Blu-ray also. - mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ImTheDarkcyde: Yes, you're exactly right. I'm certain Microsoft wants Halo 3 players to shell out $200 on an HD-DVD first before buying the $60 game plus the cost of Xbox Live. You hit the nail right on the head...
Last I checked, before xmas, only around 1% of 360 owners had the HD-DVD peripheral. Now who do you think Microsoft is... Sony? Have my $5 ready in June... or November... - BlackKnight6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I forgot thinking about Blu-ray taking a dive, good point.
- buckynekkid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've found I can get vg news quicker, better reviews, more interesting stories and almost zero ads, by simply going to a couple of forums and a vg blog. I abandoned IGN and Gamespot a while ago, but 1up still has some interesting stuff from time to time.
- BlackKnight6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sega CD was for games, not movies, not even the same.
The fact that Sony gives no option to gamers to not have a HD drive and pay the extra 200 is a con, not a pro. They both cost the same when it comes to HD players.
Microsoft didn't COPY Sony when it came to wireless network, wireless controllers, multicore, and 1080P. If anything they "copied" the PC. Neither invented these technologies or features.
The fact you compare the Sony's console of less than 2 months of operation to Microsoft's 360 year+ of operation is a joke. Look at PS3's at stores that have more hours of use, they do break down and freeze and need replacement even. Once consumer PS3's get near the same amount of total hours of operation as the store ones we will see failures, unless you believe Sony PR that the PS3's are "purposely" freezing so people take turns at stores...
PGR3 was one hell of a game for a launch title as well as Kameo (some don't like to admit it, like Viva PiƱata, but it was a great and fun game) and some others, the launch was not "garbage". And don't forget, Sony had a whole extra year to make games and watch MS. Just because Sony was LATE by a whole year, doesn't mean it can be compared to a year ago and that Sony deserves some slack, actually the opposite, they should have been even better.
They didn't use UT07 for the 360 because its not done yet...Epic still has not claimed PS3 exclusivity, and with the way things have been going with Sony and exclusives, I am sure its coming to the 360 as well. - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh, sorry for not looking at the page. The title got me to think that it was the best gaming peripheral overall, i though the same would be true for the other categories and i didnt read closely. but I have actually heard that the ps3 version is better (it got better reviewed on ESPN.com or SI.com - that should stand for something).
- blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -8/+9How much in kickbacks does IGN receive from MS?
- DeathSun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But they might for the PC...
Someone always likes to make a special edition with bunches of features.
Hell, I still have a copy of Zork: Grand Inquisitor special DVD addition which was released when PC DVD players first started to hit the market (at like $200 a pop)--just so they had some "look how cool DVDs are for video games" example. - whisperedlie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3ign usually sucks, but I just got my HD-DVD drive and I'm really enjoying it so I might have to agree. When you think of console peripherals, it in the purest sense is a very expensive one and initially you might be turned off by that. But when you consider the fact that it is an inexpensive HD-DVD player (that also apparently works on PCs... i'll be trying this later tonite), it's actually a pretty good deal. The fact that Microsoft doesn't cram it up your ass like Sony does with Bluray by allowing the consumer to decide if they want it is actually quite nice. It would have been nice to not have to have an external unit (swapping out drives instead), but the reason they didn't likely has a lot to do with keeping costs down. HD-DVD output over component is nice too.
at any rate, if you're a home entertainment enthusiast or just one of those ***** that have to have everything (I fall into both categories), the HD-DVD drive is a real treat and a good value. and let me tell you, HD-DVD looks friggin' sweet. - Stonedonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Upon further review, these were in the IGN Gear section..."
Yeah, but the award itself still says "best *gaming* peripheral."
Wow, this reply totally didn't go where it was supposed to... -
