- jayfarer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Too high to compete? What? No, seriously.
For $250, you get a controller the likes of which we haven't seen, a packed in game, free online service, access to a store that will have classic games from generations past, a photo viewer, a photo editor, a news and weather network, and god knows what else.
The next closest option is the $300 Xbox Core System, which is really not even the full experience. With the Xbox 360 games you were looking at, but not the way they were intended to be played. - Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18It does include Wii Sports so if you think of that as a separate game the system is $200, the game $50, and actually Wii-Sports is pretty big for a launch pack in (Reminds me of the Tetris pack-in on the original gameboy) you honestly don't even need to buy any games for the system when you buy it. I probably will get Zelda and the system so the total will be $300 which is decent for 2 games and a Wii (I planned to get Wii Sports anyway)
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16$250 is good, you get a game packed in...a simple one, but I'm sure it will be a fun party game
I'm not quite on the GC 1.5 boat...more of a 1.8 or 1.9 deal for me - BenSerwa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18If LoZ:TP doesn't count as a killer app, I don't know what does...
- milomilomilo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14You guys confuse the hell out of me.
Before, everyone was so excited about the wii, and kept saying it will be 225-250, and everyone kept saying that graphics would be good enough.
But tonight, every board i've gone to people are dissapointed, about the price and that they didn't announce hd today.
This is the most affordable system there is, and with alot more bang for your buck, and now people are clammoring about the price?
I swear, nintendo fans only like the hype of the system, but after its confirmed they are bored with it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Im surprised that Nintendo is releasing in North America first, i like this trend.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Matt added: "In addition, the system will ship with the Opera Web browser, enabling users to connect online."
- YumYumKittyLoaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Wow, every game website is on their toes for information. It's crazy, every other Digg post is about the smallest new detail. Nintendo REALLY has outdone itself with the Wii and promotion.
Can't wait for the Wii. I was skeptic at first at the whole wand thing, but wow, I can't wait. - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Hmm.. I think the $249 figure is purposely a little high so that when it gets down to $199 next year, it sounds like a great deal. Deep price cuts always encourage buying. If they price it as low as possible, they can't make such a deep cut.
The only thing that gets me is that it only comes with 1 controller? To give it a truly return to the roots feel, it really should have come with two. Getting another controller and nunchuck is another $60 or so. 4 player party gaming? Another $120-$180. Ouch. - Bara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You can't say "Wii Sports is $50 so it's really like paying $200 for the Wii", simply because you dont have the option to not buy Wii Sports. That's like saying "Oh, the Xbox 360 is really $200 because the hard drive is $100, the controller is $50, the headset is $30, and the free 3 months of Gold has an MSRP of $20, so it's really like you're paying $200!"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Updated agreeing now.
IGN changed the ""We're still waiting for "official" word"" to "The news we've all been waiting for." - chaskell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9People like being suprised. This didn't really suprise anyone.
That is pretty much it. - shamblett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Ok, first off when they said it would cost under 250.00 yeah technically 249.99 is less than 250.00 but what the heck can I do with a penny? Next I could spend $50.00 more and get a 360, and if Microsoft is smart they will lower their console price to 249.99 for the low end and eat up Nintendo's market.
One controller, how did We (ii) turn into just I, that is crap. It does NOT come with the Opera web browser, you need to use points and buy it, more crap. No mention of if it will play DVDs so now we have a $250.00, oh sorry $249.99 console that can show pictures and play games and show weather and the news WTF.
I was so looking forward to buying this for my family, in fact I had stated if it was priced low enough I would have bought two, now I will just spend my money elsewhere. This is such a dissapointment, for me. I can't believe that Nintendo didn't take the opportunity to just flood the market with cheap next generation (or just generation and a half) consoles and take up a huge percentage of the market share. I think they let the DS success get to their heads and got too greedy. Heck even if it was $199.99 I would have bought one and a second controller. I mean what good is the Wii Sports with one contoller tha is, well just crap as far as I am concerned.
Well that is my $0.01 $0.01 worth of ranting.
Enjoy. - Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10That is the japanese release, the NYT Article says the American Wii comes with wii sports, we wont know anything official about the American wii package until the NY Announcement tomorrow, so I am sticking with the NYT Article until the actual announcement. (It is possible that the article is incorrect)
- UberC, on 10/12/2007, -14/+23$250? Kind of a bummer.
- mikehc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9They probably broke an NDA by anuncing this before Nintendo's American event.
This is what the story said:
"The New York Times broke an embargo and published the information even before news hit out of Japan."
Then they update it to:
"The New York Times published with the story and seems, in fact, to have beaten Nintendo Co. Ltd with the news." - justinjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7In other news, Mario seen wearing jeans and a black turtleneck.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Any word on if it has a DVD player? At a bit of a higher price tag ($250) than was anticipated I really hope they didn't skimp on that. One might say that since almost everything made today can play DVD's its not really necessary but if I want to use my Wii on a trip in the car then DVD playback would rock.
- cdman98, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I smell a leak or BS.
I recall Nintendo saying it would be closer to $200 and that number has come up almost left and right.
The inclusion of Wii sports for the extra 50 is ok but a second controller would set this pack off. People can play together, get hooked then the other person will want one. - Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It is close to $200.
25,000 yen is like $213 USD, and Japan gets that price because it won't be bundled with Wii Sports. We get the price boost for the (hopefully decent) included game.
But what I'm not understanding is why the US is getting Wii before Japan... that doesn't seem right to me, so I'm calling quasi-BS with you. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9http://www.nintendo.co.jp/n10/news/060914.html
According to a translation of the Japanese release (the link's in Japanese) the Wii will contain: 1 of the following, a Wii console, a remote control, a nunchuck attachment, AC adapter, AV cables (RCA cables), a stand, coverplate for unit, a sensor bar, a sensor bar stand, and a pair of AA batteries.
No mention of Wii Sports or other pack-ins. - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8probably because nintendo contacted the NYT directly to give them this information.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wow, Nintendo really dropped the ball on this one. FIrst off- I don't want Wii Sports. I'd much rather have the Japanesse price, save $50 and buy Metroid Instead. Second- the Wiimote/Nunchuck are WAY too expensive. Gamecbue controllers cost $30 and now we have to pay $60 (you definitely need both to count as a 2nd controller)? That is insane! I was expecting $40-$50 for both. And if Nintendo wants to get new consumers the way to this is by packaging them together, not selling them seperate. I'm not as worried about including two because you can switch them so you really need only one. I still cna't get over how expensive they are.And what about the November 19th launch date? I was expecting one a lot earlier. THey are going up against a juggernaut. The limited systems availible for the PS3 won't hurt it at all. Wii advertising will get lost in the roar of hype SOny will be having. If they had launched it earlier they could get word of mouth out before the PS3 launches. Nintendo had been doing very well the Wii but between the weird Japanese times (I never found a feed), the NYT leaking the price adn release date (that must suck) and the.... odd pricing and bundle strategy (do they even include a memory card at that price?) I think Nintendo really dropped the ball. I'll be very interested to see Nintendo's American press conference now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Japan Release - December 2nd, 25,000 Yen (basically $250 - Not Currency Exchange but how Nintendo reports it)
Picture proves date: http://www.famitsu.com/blog/express/mobimg/photo-20060914-055310-0-88d7e49b37dcb5a7edf23df6783db336.jpg - martin993, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You can count Wii Sports as a seperate game if you like but bear in mind that it looks like something they whacked together for $5 on a day off.
- martin993, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6No. You get the nunchuck. No classic controller but I wasn't really expecting one. Would've been nice to have 2 wiimotes, especially after all their talk of multiplayer gaming and the reason behind the name.
- spoonard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Bigger profits for giving it to America 1st...
- isthisnametaken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Anyone else disappointed about the controller pricing? $40 for the wiimote then another $20 for the nunchuck?
Can you get by without the nunchuck? - Rosewood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Have you guys never seen a hardware launch? This happens all the time. Conference for day X, news goes out in day X's paper which means the person gets it before. Now that ***** is on line day X's newspaper articles go on line early.
Same thing happened for the x360 - Linh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6my only concern w/ this is... not sure if i want wii sports, and $60 for extra controllers ($40 for the wiimote, $20 for the nunchuck) is a bit steep.
- carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5they've also bundled it with wii sports though, so they bump the price up and leave themselves room to pull it down some more should sony have a leg to stand on with ps3. seems like a good idea to me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The GBA could play movies, didn't take away from it being a handheld gaming platform
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They are region free just like the DS, and it will ask for the language at the beginning just like the DS, there would be no difference in the actual console just the packaging and manuals. So releasing it in America first just cools the import markets and gives japan a good launch too.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Wait... I thought the Wii was the game console that was supposed to actually be just a game console.
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Main thing is once they are done selling out of consoles (Which they will, its going to be like the 360 mess again) they can take out Wii Sports and drop it to 200 to keep high sales flowing in.
- Ndiggnation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ICSU: Enough time to earn the extra money? Are you channelling Ken Kutaragi?
- Bara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All Nintendo said is that it wont be more than $250. Guess we all should have seen that as saying "It will be no less than $250 either"
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The DS Came out a few weeks earlier in America before japan, (Actually if I recall correctly it was almost the exact same distance apart as this) this seems right to me.
- TheGrizah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I was personally expecting about 50 dollars less and an October release...but I'm not upset over 50 dollars and November. Its really not all that surprising what Nintendo chose. I'm betting that they're waiting on games to be finalized and that's why the November release.
Anyways...Even more surprising is the US will get it first this time. - rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So the nunchuck and the "classic" controller will not be in the box, must be purchased separatedly?
- shamblett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@drsnaks
I agree that Nintendo is a business, the thing with consoles is the money is made on games not the hardware, more hardware = more games = more money. So if you can get the hardware into more peoples hands you will make more money in the long run, and business like making more money. The old adage you need to spend money to make money holds true, it is why the rich keep getting richer. If Nintendo lowered its price for the Wii, it could have positioned itself a lot better in the market, especially if they bundled Wii sports and two remotes, and no nunchucks. That way a family could play together and not have the nunchuck just sitting in the box waiting for a game to be purchased to use it.
Think about it for $249.99 add a second controller and no nunchuck it would have better positioned itself to the target market of non-gamers. Now drop the price to say $199.99 and have two controllers and Wii sports. Now when a non-gamer is looking at the prices of consoles it is significantly less than the other consoles, and is now a package that will involve the family. And to take this point further if the whole family is now interested in gaming, because they have been gaming together, then the market for selling games has increased.
How has the market increased you say, well Dad likes the sports so he buys Madden 07, and Susie likes the cuteness of the Wii Sports so she wants a different game, in the Nintendogs type of category ( I am the avg gamer so I do not know what type of games are in this category, but if Nintendo is looking at this market I am sure there are some). So you see more members of the family will be buying games, and that is how Nintendo makes more money as a business.
Thanks. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The Wii will also include a "Photo Channel" which will allow users to use their Wii to share digital photos via their television.
oh my god.
So many children's lives will now be scarred by the images of goatse, lemonparty, and tubgirl. Let the carnage begin - gfindlay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree with you on that one, except I read it as the "W" was the console, and 2 "ii" for 2 players, ie. 2 wii-motes.
If it comes packaged with 1 wii-mote, it's like, "Wi", or how I would pronounce it, "Why"? - gfindlay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I wholeheartedly agree with everything you've said! After I got over the shock of it costing $249.99 US, the next biggest shock/dissapointment was that the web browser, (Opera) was not INCLUDED.
How many "points" will I have to pay for that? $10 worth? $30 worth? More?
I admit I'll still probably buy one, because I'm just so excited about the possibilities for games in the future, but I won't enjoy it! Just kidding I'll still enjoy it. - mkmckay13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I agree. They really had an opportunity to reclaim their place in the market, but instead their greed has gotten the best of them. All the hype surrounding this thing must have led them to believe that they could get more buck for their bang, leaving "wii" the consumers with less bang for more bucks.
The cost of a new controller puts the machine in the same price range as the 360. I am sure that MS will drop their price to increase it's competitiveness with the "Wii."
I hate to say it, but this has definitely curbed my enthusiasm. I had hoped to spend no more then $300 for the machine with a couple of games and now it looks like my 300$ will barely get me a system and a second controller. Now the cost has gone up significantly:$250 for the system; $60 for a new controller; $50 each for a game. Now were looking at at least $350.
While I still want one, the price seems a little high now. With some many more practical things out there to purchase, a $350 - $400, video game system seems a little too expensive for a casual gamer. - mkmckay13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It doesn't make any sense that they wouldn't include two contollers. If they are really trying to reach non-gamers with this machine and really make it a multi-player experience, then they have really dropped the ball. How are you suppose to play WII Sports Tennis against your mom's if you only have one controller. I thought "Wii" was suppose to about "wii." Coming packed with one controller it's more like "ii," to "I"'s waiting to play against the computer.
Mark - floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's definitely a letdown, but I think it will eventually sink in... I hope it does. Does everyone remember when "Wii" name was announced?
Wii - $249
Controller - $59.99
2nd Game - $49.99
---------------------------
+ Tax (unless you live in Oregon)
TOTAL: $380 for most people.
Does $380 seem reasonable?
/you can always buy Gamecube games. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -13/+15You are calling the wii "hardly next gen"
Maybe your definition of "next gen" is the same as what people call a "next gen TV"
See In my opinion you are leaving out a very important word... see i call the xbox 360 "next gen" I call the PS3 "next gen" but the wii.... I call that "Next Gen Gaming."
Did you see the key word? let me go over it again "next gen GAMING."
- how about that time?
The Wii will change the way we think and play games, it will cause innovations on the developers part, and challenge the gamer in new and interesting ways. Can you imagine all the fun puzzle solving concepts for Zelda? I know I can't. - whiskerlickins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, the Nunchuck won't always be necessary, especially for co-op games. It is needed for one player games like Zelda and Red Steel, obviously. If you're not happy with the Wiimote price, wait for all the knockoffs.
I, for one, am fine with the price and bundle. You're getting a lot out of the box for the price. I'm a little disappointed about the late release date though. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3bigger if you make americans import it then buy another one when its released in english
