- EsotericBoredom, on 10/12/2007, -24/+87When does IGN ever give a game less than 7?
- G_Raph, on 10/12/2007, -26/+63and if it wasn't for the new standard of graphics set by Gears of War, this game probably would of been a lot closer to a 10.
- ActiveMatx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+40I dont think this will fall well with the Digg community. Unfortunatly everyone at Digg hates sony.... and wished for the PS3 to die.
Me, and well, quite a lot of other people on the Internet are looking forward to the PS3, and a successful rating such as presented here by IGN, is only good news for me.
I can't wait for Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4, Gran Turismo 5, Final Fantasy 13, and Ninja Gaiden to hit the PS3 (exclusives).
Will I be buying a PS3 before christmas? Probably not, since none of the above games will be done by then.
I will be buying a Wii though before Christmas because its just so damn cheap. - kirashira, on 10/12/2007, -7/+38Gears of War isn't even an FPS.
- chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -8/+36@Esoteric
Quite often it seems, check their review list and you will see a number of games in the 5 or lower range.
The other possibility is games are getting much better now and you don't have as many horrible games as you used to. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -11/+38"When does IGN ever give a game less than 7?"
Seems like when the developer doesn't take out huge ads.... - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Wait a minute... READER RATING? Umm, pretty much nobody has it yet. And have you noticed that discrepency there? It's just trolls putting in low scores and perhaps slightly fewer fanboys putting in high scores. Let's take those reader ratings with a grain of salt shall we.
- TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28FPS=First Person Shooter
Gears of war = TPS
TPS = Third Person Shooter
Yes they are similar, but no GOW is not a FPS. - chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Sorry: Gears of War, Final Fantasy XII (and III), Resistance: Fall of Man, and the newest iterations of Castvania and Zelda. :)
- chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22wow, so many great games on all consoles are getting wonderful reviews. There are too many to pick from! I'm working through Okami and FFXII, and with GoW, R:FoM, Zelda:TP, FFIII (DS), and Castlevania PoR on the way this seems like a new golden age of gaming.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Yeah, two seemingly similar, yet different games.
Gears = strategic shooter, nice quick online play, best graphics out there
Resistace = twitch shooter, more in-depth online play, solid next-gen graphics
What's wrong with people judging the games and not the system they are on. - kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18I 100% agree with you. This generation is certainly the best for the consumer. weather you get the amazing GoW, to the highly anticipated Zelda, or the promising Resistance, you certainly can't go wrong with any of these consoles.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15FYI, Resistance is not even out yet.
- frikk, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21so many acronyms. I have no idea what games you're talking about - not that I'm an avid gamer or anything. Sheesh.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16"but does anyone expect the PS3's unnamed online service to make 40 people on one map a viable"
Yeah, great point: just because it doesn't have a name, it mustn't be able to work right. Suuuuure. The reviewers mention that they actually played 40-player games multiple times and it worked great. I'd be more inclined to believe them than you. - Gus1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I must say, as a PS3 skeptic, this does sound very good. The multiplayer looks great, as do the graphics but so far this and MGS4 are the only reasons I would ever get a PS3.
- sokz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10God console fanboys are so hilarious! A .3 difference on IGN is going to make you not play one game and defend the other to the grave? hahahah.
- TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I like how there are 250 user ratings with an average of 7.5 for a game that isn't even out yet.
Fanboy much? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Bad graphics? (pic) http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3/image/article/745/745206/resistance-fall-of-man-20061110064422873.jpg
- opnickc, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20"and if it wasn't for the new standard of graphics set by Gears of War, this game probably would of been a lot closer to a 10."
So, basically:
"If it wasn't for another game being better in one or more ways, this game would've scored better."
Umm, no *****? - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13I've played Resistance and Gears about equally now and I have to any anyone who looks at the difference in scores and thinks one is noticeably better than the other is mistaken.
Yeah, there are differences. Gears graphics are better. Resistance's controls are better. Resistance has a longer (but not better) single player game. Resistance has a lot better online, it redefines state of the art for consoles. Both have world that are inexplicably mostly boring brown and grey.
But in the end, if you're an action shooter type guy, you'll probably like either of them. It's sort of a Forza vs Gran Turismo 4 thing. Yeah, one might be a little better than the other, but there's not enough between then to buy the other console to get it, or even to make your console buying decision for you.
It's too bad this is just about the only compelling PS3 title at launch. At least it's a good one. - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Sure, it's not a $660 game, but Gears isn't a $460 game either.
- swifty12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9you can watch the video review here:
http://media.ps3.ign.com/media/748/748483/vids_1.html - haastyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7dude, you haven't played the game, looks are not everything and it doesn't look that bad, the gameplay could be freaking amazing, the AI is supposed to be good, so play it first before you comment.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Well, there's the killer app Sony needs.
And so it begins. - kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I agree with the painful part...but still, This game looks very good. and I'll defiantly be checking it out. I can't resist 40 player online no lag...too damn hypnotizing...not to mention Insomniac made it. I LOVE R&C...can't wait for the next version for the ps3.
- Bega, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8heh, when I think TPS, I Think office space, not video games
- museo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Why does IGN even allow user reviews before a game comes out? They should have something similar to 1up's hype meter before a game comes out rather than be prone to this stupidity.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Trust Me. 40 Player Multiplayer Games arn't all that fun. Over maybe 16 it gets to be just a giant ***** of 13 year olds yelling "*****" into a headset.
- sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm surprised that you didn't see the
"Press Average
1 press rating"
Thing there - sakuraz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Gus1//
That means a lot.
PS2 didn't even have any great launch games;) - junk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm a PC gamer but with what my last video card (7950 GX2) cost me, I have been looking at consoles more and more. That said, from the video review this didn't look like a "Next Gen" game to me in the same way that Crysis, GoW, Lost Planet, Rainbow Six Vegas or Assassin's Creed do. It just looked like a really polished CoD with aliens.
Not that polish is a bad thing, just the opposite. In fact, another reason I am at the end of my PC Gaming rope is the "Release *****, patch it later" mentality of PC developers. - kingfoot, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11dude obviously its an opinion...from what I hear for the ps3 shooter, its better than GoW but that still not going to stop me from pluggin in my mouse and keyboard...there is just no comparison from M&K compared to controller.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Oh that's the current way of misrepresenting things then is it? Let me try: at $250 Wii Sports is an underwhelming a pile of *****.
- JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@fohf
Did you just stop reading there? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4With a comment like that, I'm pretty sure that it's your firmware that's corrupt.
CRC failure! - djtodd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Looks cool to me...and that's about all I have to say. I am a 360 fanboy, mostly because I don't have enough money to buy a PS3 and besides, truth be told, there really isn't anything cming out at launch for the PS3 that's very exciting. I think there are a lot of level headed people out there like me who will admit that every console has something great to offer, but the 360 has (present tense, it's sitting in my living room hooked up to my Aquos!) a lot of great games out NOW and more on the way. It won't be long before we can say this about the PS3 and then I might consider selling 25 gallons of my plasma and buying one.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -14/+17You want boring. How about the Ape Escape and Wii Sports games from the GameSpot marathon. Heck, even Zelda was putting me to sleep. Still not even a voice to be found. Zzzzzzz.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Holy ***** that game looks amazing. I cannot wait. 5 More days.
- kayjay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3its a really good game. i cant get enough of aliens attacking the earth.
im looking forward to seeing the 2nd gen games thatll come out next year!
does resistance: fall of man use the gyrosope? - BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Am I the only person who doesn't like to mix-n-match his games and wants to beat one game before moving on to the next? I'm in the first 10% of FFXII and it might be Christmas before I can finish that game. Then I'll have to go to Zelda, then to Gears of War...argh...not enough free time!!
- thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5"We need a good Gears of War vs Resistance shootout"
No, Gears of War and Resistence are not similar at all and no Gears of War is not a FPS shooter. To be more accurate we need a Call of Duty 2 vs. Resistence shootout because Gears of War will just chainsaw Resistence in half! - Zinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's the fanboys fault for messing with the reviews!
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"So this game is better because the graphics are shinier and it involves aliens?"
Actually it's better because of the incredibly unique weapons and open gameplay and storyline. - bagboyrebel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3because the x-box controller is completely different from all other controllers?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Several people have mentioned that this game is a more "polished" version of another game... but, personally, I don't see it (they must be talking about the controls). There are several annoying things which jump out at me while watching every video... and they ruin the feel for me. The humanoid aliens have awkward posture and/or skeletal structure which animates just as awkwardly (almost comically so) when they move. Everything looks either bland (the environment seems pretty flat, clean, and sparse for those so-called "war torn" regions) or cliché (aliens, WWII-styled world, etc). The ragdolls and other physical objects don't seem to move satisfyingly. The AI, despite being hyped by the developers, seems like that of PC games which we've been playing for years. With the sacrifice of 1080 in favor of 720 for the reduced overhead supposedly to be used to make the graphics more advanced... it seems a bit embarrassing to release this alongside Gears of War... which looks better AND supports a higher resolution on a cheaper console that has been available for purchase for about a year already (compared to the PS3 being significantly delayed by Blu-Ray and chip yields). I saw some other minor issues, too... but those are the more noticeable ones. The gameplay itself would need to be absolutely fantastic for me to be able to ignore all of that... which it MAY be... but, if this is the killer first-gen app, I'm holding out for second or third-gen games before I even *consider* the PS3.
That said, the story mode is quite a bit longer than Gears of War (which can be completed rather easily in one sitting even on Hardcore, but I haven't tried Insane yet) multiplayer has more variety (compared to a few simple TDM variants for up to 8 players)... but, seriously, that's the only decent complaint I've been able to muster regarding Gears of War. There just isn't enough of it! Still, even though I'm already on my third run through Gears... I'm thoroughly enjoying the experience. So, exactly how long do we have to wait for a sequel? - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GoW supports a higher resolution than Resistance? Really?
- FlakPyro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fine a post that doesn't bash sony into the ground and reports about one of the GOOD launch games.
- LMN8R, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4That is true - Ratchet and Clank is an awesome game (I just started playing it for my first time literally a week ago) - and I'm sure Insomniac did a great job with Resistance. I just don't think it's great enough to be worth plopping down $660 for game + console. Or waiting in line for hours and hours to get one at launch for that matter.
Besides, 40 players with no lag is nothing new in PC multiplayer gaming. In fact, 40 players in an online games turns to a spamfest in regular deathmatch and capture the flag modes. You need a huge battlefield like Onslaught games in UT2k4 or Battlefield 1942/Battlefield 2 games for that many players to actually be fun. - tapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, according to IGN's review, tilting in different directions shows different things on your HUD. I don't remember what it shows, but supposedly it's a brilliant idea and very well implemented.
