- TrainByte, on 11/11/2009, -8/+194I don't think I've seen a backlash quite like this in video game history.
- AmnesiacJack, on 11/11/2009, -24/+193IGN sucks bags of dicks for money.
- Soragon, on 11/11/2009, -13/+178Some reader reviews:
{{{~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Positives:
* Custom features like mouse and keyboard.
Negatives:
* No dedicated servers.
* No mod support.
* Max multiplayer 9v9.
* No lean.
* $60 price tag for a PC game.
* Runs on IW.net P2P network.
* No developer console (For commands, etc).
* No match recording.
* Complete and utter disrespect to the PC gamer community.
Summary:
"The game is not balanced for lean." - Infinity Ward
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
This game is like taking a new car and smashing it with a sledgehammer, it takes an awesome franchise and sends it backwards.
A failure on every feature, multiplayer is limited to a 9v9 lagfest controlled by IW themselves and hosted on your computer, no mods, no competitive matches, just LAG.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
This game is a joke. 12 people online and no dedicated servers and a $60 price tag. Is Infinity Ward serious or is this a joke? Who knows but they will not be taking my money.
A slap in the face to PC gamers. Don't give them your money. Check out other games.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* }}}
Alright. I get how they complain about small multiplayer, but the $60 price tag? WTF do you expect people?! It's a bloody game. We pay $110 for new console games here in Australia and considering our dollar is 0.92 right now...
Really! - mark076h, on 11/11/2009, -6/+139I hope ARS does a real review of the PC version.

Nearly 80% rated it a 1/10 "Unplayable, utterly worthless" - evanstapler, on 11/11/2009, -54/+181It doesn't matter. All of the teens on 360's buy it up and don't give a *****. They have no standards, as long as it says "Halo" or "Call of Duty". There's no reason for them to cater to PC users.
- covertbadger, on 11/11/2009, -11/+134"All of the teens on 360's buy it up and don't give a *****. They have no standards"
Yeah, damn those stupid teens, right? Oh, hang on:
"Evan Dornbusch (evanstapler)
A 16 year-old fellow from Dayton, Ohio (US) who joined Digg on January 3rd, 2007" - kahoona1, on 11/11/2009, -12/+112PC games have been $50 for years. Them raising the price on MW2 is only for flat out greed.
- jordanmoore, on 11/11/2009, -3/+102Talking very quickly with stick men.
- LostOverThere, on 11/11/2009, -5/+93Spore says Hi. Actually, I don't even think that was this bad...
- daviz0, on 11/11/2009, -5/+90I wonder how zero punctuation will review the game
- philomatic, on 11/11/2009, -4/+85The $60 complaint stems from the last COD being only $50. So essentially they added $10 to the cost while removing a ***** of features...
- katatoniq, on 11/11/2009, -15/+95How can IGN possibly justify that review? Surely they're getting kickbacks.
What a joke. - bated321, on 11/11/2009, -43/+116@evanstapler: Because if we want to play console games, we must be stupid teens with low standards. Believe it or not, some people are perfectly happy to play the same game on a console attached to a nice tv, while not having to worry about hardware configurations. Maybe it is just slackness on my part, but I can think of many ways I would rather spend my time when confronted with the annoyances of building a gaming pc. Hopefully as these "teens" playing their dumbed down console games will not grow up with the same pathetic superiority complex many pc gamers such as yourself have. Seriously, pc gaming elitism is worse than having to sit through a bunch of those "I'm a mac" ads!
If future call of duty games were not to come out on pc, I would be happy if only because it would mean I would not longer have to hear from people such as yourself. - AmnesiacJack, on 11/11/2009, -3/+68Exactly, console gamers pay more because Sony, MS, and Nintendo charge an extra license fee just to make games for the console.
PC obviously doesn't have that fee and generally developers are smart enough and nice enough to pass those savings along to us.
Bobby Kokitch just saw it as an excuse to make more money during a recession. - Vash63, on 11/11/2009, -4/+66Could've really picked a better short description.
- Dylson, on 11/11/2009, -10/+69I love the gaming community. They never ***** around. Unlike IW.
- freaky2k, on 11/11/2009, -6/+63They sold out on PC gamers, what do they expect? They added matchmaking, but removed way more...obvious fail.
- TheNik, on 11/11/2009, -0/+48He'll probably review the console version and make fun of all of the PC gamers that are complaining.
- sanchezke70, on 11/11/2009, -10/+57You got that from your magic statistics making machine, right?
- brundlefly76, on 11/11/2009, -1/+48Daikatana was different - yeah a lot of hype - but over one game.
The MW2 issue is much wider than the title itself.
MW2 basically marks the point at which PC FPS dies, and is replaced with console ports for the convenience of developers. - K0opa, on 11/11/2009, -38/+84And 90% of the user that gave review haven't even played the game...
- Zetsubou, on 11/11/2009, -16/+59***** IW
- jeremymccurdy, on 11/11/2009, -18/+57In other words: "We completely and utterly caved when IW threw money at us."
- darkchild82, on 11/11/2009, -2/+391.5/10 right now actually.
- khabba, on 11/11/2009, -3/+38IGN explains why they're giving the same grade as the other consoles:
"For those of us looking to pick up the game on PC, a few more things need to be noted about Modern Warfare 2. Infinity Ward has worked to make sure the experience on PC is identical to that of 360 and PS3, and while I'd say the team has succeeded overall, that's so a good and bad thing for various players. On the plus side, you're getting the same amazing experience as the other versions, and those that want a game that's easy to jump into online and connect with other players will find it with the PC version of Modern Warfare 2. What that also means, however, is that the PC version is also locked to the same restrictions as the other versions, so 32 person matches are a thing of the past, you can't create dedicated servers for match hosting, and that also will result in a lack of future mod support and PC-specific expansion. While this is definitely a downside for those familiar with the expandability of PC gaming and freedom that comes with a more open source platform, IW is essentially forcing the PC version to play by the same rules as the console offerings, and thus making sure anyone that wants to jump in and get the intended Modern Warfare 2 experience can do so across any system. It'll hurt the hardcore PC community, and but it's a decision IW made.
Should Infinity Ward have included more expandability across PC – be it in more players online, dedicated servers, or through other avenues – the PC version would have been reviewed as such, and the added features would have (we can only assume) helped the version go above and beyond its console counterparts. Seeing as it's the same core experience, however, we are reviewing it as such, and the game should be looked at as the same value and overall package as any other console." - pikagrue, on 11/11/2009, -2/+36Same thing on Amazon too
http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Modern-Warfare-2-P ... - K0opa, on 11/11/2009, -5/+38well, example at amazon there was 1/5 rating even before the game was out, I don't have any machine counting *****, but there is lots of kids flaming without even trying the game.
- alrightwtf, on 11/11/2009, -1/+32when you picture a bag of dicks.... what do you see?
- flyinfoofighter, on 11/11/2009, -3/+31They're not all being paid out.
GamePlanet - 70/100
GameArena - 50/100 - AmnesiacJack, on 11/11/2009, -29/+56It's a ***** world when "elitism" is just demanding a superior product to the previous version. Casual gamers (the American Idol / Top-40 version of gamers) will be the downfall of innovative gaming.
- WolfHook, on 11/11/2009, -1/+28$110 Aussie dollars.
How does your suck make their suck, suck less?
It's all relative to where you live and the condition of your currency. Simply don't buy this military propaganda in the first place, you're a winner and $110 dollars better off! - DestroyedAUS, on 11/11/2009, -3/+30I disagree. FPS games with cover systems like Vegas 2 are completely different to straight FPS games like MW2, and RPG inspired FPS games like Bioshock / Deus Ex are completely different to either of the above. If by FPS you mean "point and shoot until dead", then yes, there are a tonne of those about.
- smoger, on 11/11/2009, -4/+30FTA: "Should Infinity Ward have included more expandability across PC – be it in more players online, dedicated servers, or through other avenues – the PC version would have been reviewed as such, and the added features would have (we can only assume) helped the version go above and beyond its console counterparts."
So if they did take that into account(which is clearly a lie), what would they have given it then? An 11/10 ? How does a game missing *major*, *standard* features, at a lower value point than everything else on shelves, manage to be "almost perfect"? The reviewer even states that the storytelling in the game is subpar, so it can't be the single player that's holding it up so high.(that's another personal dissapointment, as the storytelling in COD4 was some of my favorite in a game ever)
Oh well.. looks like we've spotted another shill in the game reviews world. Enjoy your cash, IGN. - LostOverThere, on 11/11/2009, -3/+29I'm not disagreeing with you, but GameArena specialise in Dedicated Servers, so they're naturally going to be a bit biased because dedicated servers are their business.
- rpgmakr, on 11/11/2009, -1/+27Wow, this is the ***** discussion ever. Grow up guys.
- NightXero, on 11/11/2009, -5/+28You don't ***** with the PC gamers, they ***** you!
- tugo2k1, on 11/11/2009, -8/+30That's why God is making Bad Co 2 kids !!!
- smoger, on 11/11/2009, -8/+30nope.
+pc games go waaay above 720p (take a look at COD4 side by side on a console and a pc, you'll see incredible differences.. not just in resolution but also in lighting, shadows, etc)
+they have better controls
+much higher framerates.
+a pc can be fixed in about 10 minutes on the rare occasion that it breaks, using parts from any local electronics store.
+pc games are much cheaper
+pc games don't require a monthly fee to play online
+way more selection
+better distribution systems(choice of retail or numerous on-Demand or Digital Distribution channels)
+user created content - Chewie67, on 11/11/2009, -3/+24I've got a PS3. I am still playing the hell out of COD4, and I love it.
Can I tweak every setting? No. Does it matter? No. It's still a fun game.
I'm 42. I've done the whole custom PC gaming thing for years, and I finally just decided that it's the game that matters, not the settings. If the game is fun, the platform doesn't matter.
I'm just as happy to sit on my couch and play the game on my 50" Plasma -- even if I can't customize every little setting.
My advice: Enjoy the game for what it is -- not what you think it should be. Life is too short to get all worked up over silly things like this. - askantik, on 11/11/2009, -1/+21I couldn't agree more... they point out all these flaws and then give it almost a perfect score. WTF?
And to all the people saying we should whine without buying the game... Um, news flash-- why should I buy a game in the first place when it's more expensive than its predecessor with far less features? People will keep saying ***** about how PC gamers whine or whatever, but the simple fact is that different people play PC games than play console games. Therefore, it seems logical that the game developers wouldn't try to make the experience identical.
That's like saying if I could use a mouse and keyboard on a console, would I just play it on the console? The answer is no. - holzp, on 11/11/2009, -0/+20Real war has respawns too.
- Magnus2727, on 11/11/2009, -0/+20Typically lean is an important feature when playing tactically. It allows the player to see around corners without exposing the entire body.
That said, MW2 is an even bigger Michael Bay-inspired jerkfest than the first so run 'n gun Rambo-style is likely the only practical way to play; thus further trivializing the lean feature anyway.
Anyone who uses the word "realistic" in the same sentence as "Modern Warfare" obviously hasn't read about actual accounts of operations in Iraq such as "Generation Kill" or "House to House." - Phil13, on 11/11/2009, -6/+25That's a pretty ***** excuse. Leaving out features that previous versions of the same thing included (that everybody loved too) while charging more for less content is more than a justified reason to knock a score down.
Whatever their real reason is, it's pretty clear IGN is pandering to them to make the game look better than it should.
I really feel bad for the PC users who were looking forward to this game. I hope this doesn't become an ugly trend where PC games get watered down to a console feature set level. - sat0shi, on 11/11/2009, -9/+28Read these reviews if you want something "legitimate" that's not from users and hasn't been paid out by IW to give them a good score.

"why don't you try supporting a game that isn't the 6th entry of a tired corporate franchise"
Um, because I don't care whether a game is the 6th entry of a tired corporate franchise or a game made by independent unicorns dancing on an Optimus Maximus keyboard. If it's fun, I'll play it, and what Activision do with their money is of no concern to me. - dugbay, on 11/11/2009, -0/+19This would only make sense if the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 play on the same server against each other.
- ontain, on 11/11/2009, -0/+18not just the last COD but every new PC game release this gen has been 50 or lower.
- askantik, on 11/11/2009, -0/+18All I seem to do is moan? Man, you know me from one comment? I think we might have the world's first true psychic here!
The problem with "us people" is that IW changed things we LIKED and that WEREN'T broken all in what is in all likelihood just a scheme so that in the future they can charge for additional content and stifle mods and custom maps made by the community. We've had these features (in addition to clan matches and games bigger than 9v9) since COD1... which started on the PC.
So they took a game that started on the PC that had all these awesome features (which are pretty standard on PC games, but awesome nonetheless) and stripped all those out to make the game essentially exactly like the console versions. If we wanted to play the console versions... guess what... we'd buy a console. I am not saying anything derogatory about consoles or console players-- I'm merely saying that they are different platforms played by (usually) different kinds of people.
