- MonkeyNews, on 11/09/2009, -3/+126***** these Dragon Age ads.
- phogasmic, on 11/09/2009, -3/+46Usually I am supportive of Digg Ads, but this Dragon Age ad is horrible.
- MorphineJim, on 11/09/2009, -9/+46I love people who get all bent out of shape in a review. I once saw someone claim they were "speechless" over a 7.5.
When 9/11 happened, people were speechless. When man first landed on the Moon, people were speechless. A videogame review posted on the Internet is not something for people to be speechless about. - MacHarborGuy, on 11/09/2009, -1/+35'Side-page Steve' is watching you masturbate
- funkyjunk3, on 11/09/2009, -0/+29 Full page, butt ugly MySpace-esque ads MUST GO! I don't mind the flash square ads or even the top-page banner ads, but full-page, creepy-dude-staring-at-me-while-I-type ads are the breaking point for me.

http://i35.tinypic.com/315xy7c.jpg - nothing but a nice, solid black background. - MyNameIsGusto, on 11/09/2009, -1/+22How I respond to bad reviews:
Kid: Mortal Kombat on Sega Genesis is the best video game ever.
Billy: I disagree, it's a very good game, but I think Donkey Kong is the best game ever.
Kid: Donkey Kong sucks.
Billy: You know something? YOU SUCK! - PurpleSteve, on 11/09/2009, -0/+21The worst case was over Uncharted 2. People were complaining over it getting just a 9...a 9 for crying out loud.
- gankige, on 11/09/2009, -6/+27I hate video game reviewers who take themselves entirely too seriously.
I mean, I understand it's your JOB, and it's an industry, as well as an art form in its own rite. And I love playing some of them just as much as the next guy. But come on, at the end of the day you're still talking about a game. Just like sportscasters and announcers, but worse. - Wendyoh, on 11/09/2009, -1/+18That's a fanboy for you, innit.
- dork12345, on 11/09/2009, -2/+18Good game, though.
- frsrblch, on 11/09/2009, -0/+15The coffee maker turned on automatically this morning... my dog was speechless.
- MonkeyNews, on 11/09/2009, -1/+14I don't trust ANY reviewer on any website.
Destructiod themselves have rated certain games as absolute *****, but I have really liked them (Especially Call of Juarez 2). It's for this reason, I only use reviews as a guide. Most reviewers are full of ***** anyway.
Giantbomb.com has these quick look vids. I find they help a ton when trying to see if it's a game I might like. - tehjames, on 11/09/2009, -0/+13Sex, drugs, and video game reviews man.
- dork12345, on 11/09/2009, -0/+12Destructoid is not that "harsh", though; it just makes full use of the 10-point scale. While everyone else looks at anything below an 8 as "average" and anything below a 6 as "abysmal", they actually logically see 5 as "average" - so anything above is a certain degree ABOVE average, and anything below is BELOW average.
I've never seen Dtoid been unfairly "harsh", they just aren't afraid to use the whole scale the way it's supposed to be used. - FredFredrickson, on 11/09/2009, -1/+11Ever since reviewers started handing out a 10 to every high profile game that comes out, I've just assumed that they are all just part of the advertising campaign for publishers - bought and paid for.
- bradleyland, on 11/09/2009, -1/+10It's like someone IGN'd all over the place.
- wonko33, on 11/09/2009, -2/+9A shame? Following the lead on your first post here, who cares about giving a bad reputation to a game? think about 9/11 man! Think about landing on the moon!
- ianzu, on 11/09/2009, -0/+7Goddammit, I laughed things out of my nose.
- travsb, on 11/09/2009, -2/+8lessons of a seasoned gamer (who actually has a life):
1. at the very most, there are only 3 or 4 games worth owning every year
2. gameplay is king - kefkaantakrist, on 11/09/2009, -1/+7You know who else was speechless? Helen Keller. Well, until that damn Anne taught her to speak with her hands.
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5yeah, and? you are basing your opinion on my age. I am a business owner, I run multiple websites, I have the income to pay both my employees as well as pay for my entertainment of choice. I have replaced watching useless cable TV with podcasts, most of which are related to things that interest me (technology, web design, and gaming).
The founder of Digg, Kevin Rose, brags about his PS3 and his video game consoles, and he is over 30. Alex Albrect is also over 30 and he does a show about World of Warcraft and runs a guild.
There used to be a generation of people that didn't like movies, and that generation was slowly replaced by those who do. Now there is a generation of people who grew up on video games, from the Atari 2600 (I was young enough to actually enjoy the Seasme Street Atari games), NES, SNES, Genesis, Master System, etc.
We now live in a generation where some video games are more entertaining and creative than some movies.
Just because you see no value, doesn't mean there is no value. - NowAndPresent, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5Not good enough for me - the ad shrinks the page width, which wastes 80% of my screen's 1920x1200 real estate.
Completely remove the ad and restore the page width to normal:
http://digg.com/mods/How_to_remove_the_Digg_Dragon ... - MonkeyNews, on 11/09/2009, -2/+6This is how Dragon Age ads should have been done: http://imgur.com/F5hG9
- dork12345, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5I especially love the absolute logic-leap of the whole "if reviewer gave [unfavored game] a [score that is subjectively too high], then his review of [game reader likes better] doesn't count because no credibility." Opinions are not gospel, folks.
- wolfing, on 11/09/2009, -2/+5I hate reviews that review a game for what it's not, and not for what it is. For example, giving a single player game lower 'points' for not having multiplayer... hello? it's a *single player* game. I don't give lower score points to Left 4 Dead because it doesn't have a single player storyline, it rocks for what it is.
- MonkeyNews, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4Yeah - dismiss my argument with reference to attention spans. Nice logic, genius.
The fact is a review - regardless off how hard one tries - is always about preference of the reviewer. There a countless reviews on the net and in mags that I have disagreed with. It's not enough to make a decision on.
A video or "quick look" of the game generally shows me - without bias - what the game is actually like. I have based ALL my purchases over the last year like this and I have not been disappointed even once. Mission accomplished. - NOZZLeS, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3There isn't that much Cowboy Bebop hentai to fap to, I've checked....
- dj88masterchief, on 11/09/2009, -3/+6Why do we keep digging these stories with these ads to the front page!?!!?
- Zuggy, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4I get the odd feeling Destructoid wrote this because they get flamed for always giving the lowest reviews of games. I think Yahtzee is quite possibly the only reviewer more harsh then Destructoid.
- Xtanto, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3This is backwards - I usually find that reviews and scores are inflated! Perhaps becose most of them are little more than adverts for the games they 'review'.
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/09/2009, -2/+5I find it funny that 10+ years ago when I was buying EGM, NextGeneration, and other magazines, I would look at the review scale and if I saw a game that got a 5 out of 10, I considered that a rental, and anything 7.5 or above a definite purchase (if it was a game i was interested in). Now, with the internet, there are some stories of people actually sending death threats to reviewers who gave a game a 9.5 rather than a 10.
- Ashkc88, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4Man, Uncharted 2 is game of the year in my book.
In all honesty, I don't care what reviewers or the majority say. I play games to have fun, not to be cool. - DforSpiD, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4Based on it's own merits as a game Killzone 2 was lucky to get an 8.5.
- MrJonson, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarcasm
- ShingoEX, on 11/09/2009, -1/+3#1 Subjectivity can NEVER be passed off as fact.
#2 Your best bet is to read over a good number of reviews, and if the same flaws in a particular game keep popping up over and over, it's something worth taking note of.
#3 (related to #1) These reviewers ARE NOT YOU. I've had plenty of fun with many games that a ton of reviewers simply hated. - sugarazor, on 11/09/2009, -2/+4I'm just tired of the absurd score system. IGN's the worst about it (what makes a game an 8.7 rather than an 8.5?), but if we're intent on sticking with numbers, I like the five-point scale.
5/5 = Awesome - as close to perfect as you can get, a modern classic
4/5 = Good - you should probably play this game
3/5 = Decent - there's fun to be had, fans of the genre will likely enjoy
2/5 = Below average - this game isn't very good
1/5 = Bad - should be avoided by everyone.
That's all you need, no quarter points, no half points, just five numbers used to sum up the actual review, where you actually learn something about the game. I don't understand how people can put so much stock in just the number review, it can't tell you much about the actual game. Every game is different, and it's ridiculous to try to hold them up to the same system as if it means anything.
Let's look at Wii Sports for example, Wii Bowling specifically. It's simple, anyone can pick up and play, the control scheme is innovative (especially at the time), if all you're looking for is a fun bowling game to play with friends, this is pretty much the perfect bowling game. But the perfect bowling game isn't much of a "game," so why would I use the same scoring system that I use for Fallout 3? The two games aren't comparable. Same goes for movies, I'd consider Beetlejuice to be one of my all-time favorite comedies, and a perfect 5/5 on my scale, but I'd also say The Godfather is 5/5... so looking at just the numbers, Beetlejuice is just as good as The Godfather when they're two movies that are simply impossible to compare. - DJWilsonX, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I'm still in awe of how Halo 3 got 10/10 reviews and ppl still bashed it saying it was the best game of all time.
- christianboutin, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2So true :-(
- Giac, on 11/10/2009, -0/+2MW2 deserves 2.79/10 imo
- MacHarborGuy, on 11/09/2009, -1/+3and on the opposite end of the scale, I really enjoyed Twilight Princess, and very much disliked OoT and Wind Waker.
Would I have given TwilightPrincess a 10? Not overall. The final sequence of battles was definitely a 10 for me. - DestroyPoseurs, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I dont understand why there is such a difference between game criticism vs music and film criticism when it comes to expected review scores. In other forms of criticism, it is acceptable and expected that there will be some people who will disagree with the status of some highly revered work, you can easily find negative reviews of just about every sacred text within each medium, yet with gaming, you get crucified if you dare say anything negative about a game that the rest of the gaming press are busy sucking off. The sucess of people like Yahtzee show that there is a large market for people who are disaffected with the current system and feel like alot of the popular 8 and 9 star games are garbage, but the industry still insists on participating in its collective circle jerk. I'd go so far as to say until the industry decides to stops giving automatic 10s and 9s to every game with high production value and reasonably solid gameplay the gaming industry will never be taken seriously as an artistic medium.
If you disagree with me think about this. What would happen to the film industry if every critic gave every high budget action movie that has expensive special effects and a plot that strings you along from action sequence to action sequence without making you want to claw your eyes out an automatic 4 or 5 and there was a massive ***** over anyone who didnt, where would the film industry be right now? - frepnog, on 11/09/2009, -1/+3"Based on it's own merits as a game Killzone 2 was lucky to get an 8.5."
agreed. it was an ok FPS but nothing groundbreaking and it really was not as pretty as people try to make out. - MaxChaplin, on 11/09/2009, -1/+3The scoring decay in video game reviews is ridiculous. It's not long before a 9.5 would mean "horrible".
- sgerwel1985, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Here is how video games get high ratings... Lets use IGN as the reviewer and GTA as the game.
GTA:
1) Write a big check to IGN to post pictures, and videos and banners of your game all over the site
2) Give them free copies of the game super early
3) Send over prostitutes
IGN:
1) Take the big check and giggle like a girl
2) Sell your copies early for a premium
3) Pass on the prostitutes
4) Rate the game a 10 (when really it should have got an 8.5 at best)
That is how this works for the most part, just change IGN and GTA and part 3 for really any game, any company or personal service of your liking. - MonkeyNews, on 11/09/2009, -10/+12I'm speechless you just commented on your own article.
- AlainNagel, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2The thing I like with Yahtzee is that, even when he mutilates games _I_ like, he's always right.
- NOZZLeS, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Such a negative nelly...
- Vestar, on 11/13/2009, -0/+1Kane and Lynch. The writer of this article obviously never heard of these 3 words
- PersianSpice, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1This article is pointless. Anyone with a brain doesn't look at ONE site and base their opinion off that. Gamerankings and MetaCritic is always a great tool. One person's review is dismissible, but take a consensus and you're looking at a good approximation as to how good the game really is. Honestly, the article just came off as elitist to me.
- shoyurx, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1I think the best thing is to find a reviewer whose tastes are similar to yours, and see how they rate new games.
