- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've seen this before. It points out some fairly obvious strategies, and some not so obvious ones.
Obvious: Paying to get out of jail early is worth it in the beginning of game, because you need to move around the board to buy those properties. But towards the middle of the game, when most properties are owned, try to stay there the full three turns. When you're not moving around the board, you're not having to pay people for rent.
Not so obvious: The best properties to own are the reds and the yellows (3rd quadrant of the board) because they get landed on quite a lot. Greens give a higher return on investment, but are too expensive to develop given the odds of landing on them. The light blues also get landed on a surprising amount, and are relatively cheap to build up, so they're good for keeping you afloat. The dark blue is for the gamblers, since they have a very high return but rarely get landed on and are very costly to develop. But one or two hits, if luck is on your side, and you can win the game.
Yes, I'm an expert Monopoly player. :) - tynin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Monopoly has always been a great game of who can cheat the best without getting caught, at least for me. It is a challenging game when a bunch of people play together who are all really good at palming and each of them knows it :)

- fistdollar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can take all the probabilities in the world, but there are more factors. The biggest one is how many people are playing with you. If you have over 4 people playing, it is just chance as to who will get the first monopoly and milk everybody dry.
I would disagree that the reds and yellows are the best properties to own--they are really expensive to build up, especially if you have to sell some houses. My favorite are the oranges--fairly inexpensive to build up, but high rent when fully developed, and everybody hits them when they leave jail.
The other thing that throws it off is some of the rules that people add that aren't really in the rules--such as collecting fines on free parking--that can really throw the game and keep somebody who would have otherwise died alive, and that is also what makes most Monopoly games really long. - EnzanBlues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0WOW! This is an awesome digg. I'd double, no triple digg if I could.
I love monopoly and have my whole life. I know a lot about the game too, although not to this extreme. I never did the numbers that this guy did, but I pretty much knew all this stuff from playing the game. But it's awesome to see that someone actually did the numbers, and now I know that it is true. Now I can tell all my friends the game isn't just luck. (which they believe it is) - the_mole1314, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, it has a "Feature on Internet Tonight" sticker!
Man, good ole ZDTV/TechTV..... - D-meist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude, everybody knows that stuff. Monopoly 101. Like the time I was telling my five year old cousin,
"On average, about 3.18% of the rolls will result in the player landing on the most probable non-jail square, Illinois Avenue. Of course, for a single roll starting on a particular square, the chances will be quite different, but in the long run it will average out. I have included a matrix containing the probabilities for landing on any square after one roll starting from each square on the board. It's very big and cumbersome but it's there if you want it." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1yes but how do i own A monopoly? This would help me out more than winning a game that I never play
- PureMassacre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Buy up the entire first two sides of the board past go, and load it with houses. they'll be paying rent up the a$$ on every roll!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The best way to play this game is to buy every property as soon as possible, don't horde your cash.
- bakatrinh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Monopoly is no fun when you're drunk, it's too much thinking.
- bakatrinh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1*knocks the board game over*
I quit! - clouder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1all i can say is wow... i just couldn't refuse to digg it though
- camintmier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone has a little too much time on their hands... Good digg though.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@fistdollar: "My favorite are the oranges--fairly inexpensive to build up, but high rent when fully developed, and everybody hits them when they leave jail."
Not true. Most common roll is a 7, and when leaving jail, this lands you on a chance in the middle of the orange block. The oranges are hit slightly more often than others, but the yellows are hit even more than that because they happen to occupy the best 2-roll positions away from the jail house. - Gatorbyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man I got better things to do then to figure out how to own in monopoly. Its a game! Not life, try to own in life and you will really score.

How much you want to bet a /. editor never said, "hmm this page contains worthless data that took an insane amount of time to figure out...this is going on the front page"
I guess it explains a lot. - jadewolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HA! Nice to see I'm not the only one that came across this while playing the game :-)
- JackandCoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think that the numbers are a little off. While it is an amazing feet to have done so, in a normal game of monopoly, i found my self landing on Chance and Community chest far more often than a lot of other squares. However, i do agree that yellow Marvin Gardens area were definately on of the most hit.
- commonercast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Couldn't come at a better time, as I'm in the middle of a big monopoly game.
- punchmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OT question for the monopoly experts in here.
When playing with my friends everyone just sits on the properties and nobody wants to trade with anyone else in order for someone to get a monopoly. How do you deal with this? The game gets pretty stale if nobody has a monopoly and is willing to trade.
.... in the past this was solved by promising "immunity" to other players (and of course backstabbing them later in the game). But this doesn't seem like the right way to deal with this in the game. - illfollowyou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome
- mousky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to love my employer. One minute I was able to access the above link. The next minute the site was blocked. I guess we are not allowed to read about monopoly during work hours.

- FRAGaLOT, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0get rich and buy one.. what's so hard to figure out? The real question is if you're rich enough to buy a monopoly, you don't NEED it.
- nonokiaboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0one.
- masterzora, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Wow... all I can say is that there is no way anybody can even pretend this belongs on Digg.
"Digg is a technology news website"
Lessee... Monopoly, a game invented during the Great Depression and played without any "technology"... nope, not technology.
Lessee... a buncha probability tables... nope, not news.
Lessee... started in 1997, okay... definitely not news.
